Railroad Switching In Rain! How To Switch Facing Point Switches! Rare Video, Rusty East End Track!

- Rare Footage! Short Line Railroad Switching At The End Of The Line! Working the grain spur, switching the New Customer on the lumber spur and shoving cars over the railroad crossing at the quarry near the end of active track. This is the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET and we chase the train from Macon, Ohio to Plum Run, Ohio which is just east of Peebles. Not many videos exist of action near the quarry since the tracks here don't see much action. We see both sides of the train in some of Ohios prettiest and most remote areas.
The first scene is just east of Macon, Ohio at Schweighart Road. The train is eastbound with their SD40-2, a GP15-1, 2 gondolas for loading railroad ties, 3 gondolas loaded with scrap metal, 5 covered hopper cars for loading grain and 12 hopper cars for loading rock.
Next the train is setting off the covered hopper cars on the grain spur in Winchester, Ohio. After that the scrap gons were left at Mount Zion so the crew can get them on the way back west. I didn't film that part though. I did film the other side of the train entering Mount Zion.
We see the train at a rural crossing just east of Seaman, Ohio coming around the curves on track that doesn't see much action, at least not on a daily basis.
The best part of this video is the switching action in Peebles, Ohio on the lumber siding. The locomotives are separated and two cars are spotted. Notice the huge piles of railroad ties and the new office sitting next to the mainline.
The final scene is the train at Hanson Quarry in Plum Run. This crossing is very interesting. It doesn't see many trains but the red lights flash all the time for the crossing. The SD40-2 is set off on the siding and the Geep shoves the cars east of the crossing. There are no customers on the last 4 miles of active track past the quarry but that section is used for storing railroad cars. I do have videos showing the trains running over the giant railroad bridge past the quarry and I have videos of trains being shoved almost to the end of the line near Jaybird Road. Yes, I do a lot of over night trips. Sometimes I don't plan on staying over but I do stay over if the trains are late

There is a General Chemical PS 4750 hopper in HO scale, I don't remember offhand who makes it but they are out there. There are ones like the ex-Soo hopper as well. Accurail, Tangent, and Intermountain have made them. CP is getting rid of the old Soo hoppers, there's still some around but many are under new owners like the one here with a different reporting mark.
Now, that's the way to start off the day with a video like this.

When I was younger I had several train sets, A Burlington Northern with the Green an black paint locomotives, A Con rail with the the blue locomotives,C S X too and Union Pacific.
When I came to this video, before I read it, I thought it was in South Carolina, because it looks like SC scenery, and as I type this, the weather is the exact same in Ohio as it is here, in SC. Gloomy weather just makes railroading adventures so much better!

Thanks for giving me afternoon funtime. I still love those N&W linepoles with the arrestors. The CE "Wrench C" logo is simple and unique. Getting the gons being spotted at the lumberyard was a real catch and that spur with the embedded rails is my idea of something to model; you know, where you can't see the rails but you know that they're there. Locos on both ends of the movement? That's an RJ Corman trick. One more thing: the next time you're in Mason OH, get a really good shot of the WLW tower. Live well and prosper, Jaw Tooth!

We've got no such trains here in Kelowna BC Canada; the mainlines don't pass here (and now the only route that was connecting to them is a recreational path). It's so good to watch your videos as they remind me of Toronto in the past where there is plenty of train action.
It's good to see a well maintained railroad, it's quite evident. Nice looking (and running) locos, well maintained trackage (no rocking side to side) makes it a pleasure to watch, instead of wondering if there's going to be a derailment. Having a good camera man makes a difference too! No vague & blurry distance shots, nice and consistent panning, 👍!

21:00 When we had to put cars on a siding on the Soo facing the switch points, we did what's known as a "drop" or "flying switch" maneuver. This is done by uncoupling the train behind the car or cars you want to drop, get up a bit of speed and about 100' before the switch you uncouple the cars to be dropped and the loco takes off and just as it clears the switch, a worker throws the switch so the cars roll onto the siding and the worker riding those cars then sets the hand brake at the right time. We never had the luxury of having a spare loco help us, I guess I worked for a cheap railroad, but it sure was a lot of fun!

What is quite amazing is the comparison of ungated & uncontrolled level crossings compared to UK practice (for example Mt Zion @12.00 - 14.00) and how vegetation is permitted to obstruct the visibility of oncoming trains (even with slow train speeds). Very different on this side of the pond!
So nice to see railroad (shunting) operations rather than passing trains. Certainly, riding on the side of wagons is an absolute no-no here.
Locomotives look to be well kept and whilst the use of DPUs does not occur here although top’n’tailing is a regular practice - particularly with steam-hauled passenger excursions (diesel on the rear). Can even remember having a 6-car DEMU sandwiched between a GM class 66 and Electro-diesel class 73.
There's no distributed power in this video -- the GP15-1 is just idling at the back of the train. (Unclear if you think it was acting as a DPU, or if you're just making a contrast between the US and UK in general.)

Thank you for documenting these train movements by the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad on 6 December 2022, Jaw Tooth! It is interesting to see how the train crew handles these switching moves based on the way the switches are set up. The moves that they made at Peebles, Ohio were done efficiently. The moves they made at Peebles to make it easier for what they had to do at Plum Run, Ohio at the Hanson Quarry were well thought out.

How is it you get waved at by friendly train crews, but Jason in the Upper Peninsula gets hated and ignored by his local crews?
I stopped watching Jason's videos after he put one out that included a crew throwing dunnage (scrap wood used to secure a load) out of a gondola, suggested that it was bad and encouraged comments about what they were doing. The comments turned into a toxic soup of people saying he should call the cops because these terrible people were stealing lumber from a customer. Well, no. Quite apart from anything else, nobody uses gondolas to transport wood. The crew were providing good service to a customer by cleaning out the car they were delivering, which the previous customer should have already done but didn't. Instead of praising their above-and-beyond customer service, he accuses them of wrongdoing and lets his followers stir up accusations of criminality.
He puts out content like that, and then acts all surprised that the crews don't like him. I mean, seriously?

I can hear the lead train 1657 poppet valve is out of adjustment. A nice mini house. They make an amazing man cave or she shed. Never have seen a signal crossing like that one either.

Thanks! the Purina plant is way behind schedule. They were having trouble getting supplies. There won't be anythibg moved by rail there until 2024. The track hasn't even been started. It is coming along but not on track

That's a pure short line actions. The railroad ties is untreated. It's getting load up in NS MOW gondolas and send it somewhere to get it treated.
