- We are here to answer the question we've been getting non-stop, how does the 2024 Ford S650 Dark Horse Mustang compare to the legendary 2017-2020 S550 Shelby GT350/R IN A STRAIGHT LINE? We took both cars in their stock form and lined them up for a head-to-head drag race at the Pennzoil Proving Ground. Here is a quick look at specs and what makes these two Mustangs so different:
2024 Dark Horse Mustang:
- 5.0L Naturally Aspirated 'Coyote' V8 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission
- 500 HP and 418 lb-ft of torque
- 7,500 RPM redline
- 3,900 lbs
2020 Shelby GT350R Mustang:
- 5.2L Naturally Aspirated 'Voodoo' V8 paired with a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission
- 526 HP and 429 lb-ft of torque
- 8,250 RPM redline

Shelby GT350 first debuted almost 7 years ago and the car just never looked old or outdated, in my opinion it's the best N/A Mustang that Ford have ever made. I'll never get tired hearing that 5.2L Voodoo V8 screaming
FACTS! 👍
Good cars are timeless, they will never really look outdated per se.
Maybe not new but not outdated, timelessly attractive
1967 Shelby GT500
1969 Boss 429
2003/2004 Cobra
2011-2014 GT500
The S550 GT350 and GT500 will fall into this camp as well
@@BC08 I’d also add the 1965 GT350 to that list
@@kj64gaming19….. no its not😂
@@kj64gaming19 What are you talking about? 😂🤡
I have a 350, and there's nothing quite like the progressive pull of the Voodoo. I've taken a few people through this perfect set of twisty roads in it, where you can just leave it in 3rd and roll on it to redline, and then right at the top, you are entering into the next turn, heavy brake, carve through the turn, and then back into another long, hard pull to redline (about 1.5 miles worth), and at the end, they've all said how they felt light headed. Between, the pull, the braking, and the lateral g-force in the turns, your brain feels like it's sloshing around the entire time. It's amazing.
That GT350R rolling in like Optimus Prime
😂
Makes me love my 18 350R just that much more. Plus the Dark Horse front end in person looks huge
Same, I got a 16
Yea I bet a regular 350 would still whoop a dark horse if theirs that much of a gap between a 350r. And it's almost half the price of a dark hirse. Also the R just means a gutted gt350 so I rather gut it myself and slap an r badge and save 30k😂. My mach1 was totaled recently by a drunk driver and I'm planning on a gt350. I just need to keep a close eye on that voodoo since they break without top end maintenance.
@@GolfInHawaii69 yup gt350nand R there both 526 hp of pure American rumble amazing s550s
@@GolfInHawaii69 or just collect on a Gen 2 swap from Ford
@@Madmaxxxx1984 the S550 will always be superior to me, at least until they fix the interior, the tail lights, the stupid electronic handbrake that doesn't even work half the time 😑 if it ain't broke don't fix it
The sound of the voodoo engine is unmatched
Im a 2020 GT350R owner and I dont know about this video. I have no doubt the R can beat the DH in a roll race if its manual to manual but the 10 speed would be closer. This vid I believe is for marketing for Hennessey in terms of showing a huge gap in the case to make DH owners think they need alot more power to contend, thus DH owners going to Hennessey for a boost upgrade. Thats just what it looks like to me.
Negative, the gt350R was just tuned for headers. Trust me/ R owner to R owner, we have weight and power advantage. Carbon fiber wheels make a huge difference in acceleration n stock we are 480-490 while the darkhorse has around 450-460 on a good dyno day.
The Dark Horse, in my opinion, is more like a current version of the 2012/13 Boss 302. It just has more creature comforts. Other than that, I love the Mustang and always will!! (I've owned an '06, '14 and a '17). Looking forward to the next one!
Honestly what ford could've done is rode the GT350 out 3 more years and called the Dark Horse the Mach 1, honestly this was the needed upgrade from the regular GT the Mach 1 needed to be
But that's giving Ford too much credit in this time period especially coming from marketing with names like "Mustang" Mach E, "Bronco" Sport, "Mustang" GTD, F-150 "Lightning" to which could've been replaced by the all new Ford Edge EV or Ford just Mach E, the Escape Timberline, the Ford Nightmare or something menacing, come up with something new, do something, you can only use the same names so many times without the name loosing meaning. A mustang is a 2 door RWD sports Coupe V8 with a Manual Transmission, to me that's a Mustang, not some stupid ass 4 door AWD Electric SUV, they literally share nothing in common but 2 things and that'd be the tail lights and the logo 😤
As I previous owner of two GT350 and now a current owner of GT350R let me tell you that the 350R does feel different from regular 350 however they are both excellent vehicles, can’t compare a collectible piece of art 350r to a mass produced dark horse with a regular cayotte motor that has nothing on 5.2 voodoo. 350r feels and drives like a very special car
Did you find the 350 better for daily driver?
The regular 350s I ve had both with regular A/C seats and they are more comfy then optional recaros in gt350 or standard recaros in 350r. Regular 350 less loud due to the fact that resonators are present and not deleted like in the 350r. There is a noticeable difference in sound. So if you were to daily then regular 350 is preferred and it is still looks very cool, drive very special, but 350r feels different and more raw.
A Dark Horse with a Voodoo Engine would be a dream..
No it wouldn't. Its very unreliable
That Voodoo 5.2 is a very special engine. I once raced my buddy’s one in my Charger Scatpack. As he pulled away it sounded so good 😅
Right to the point.. amazing
The Dark Horse mark-up makes more than an gt350r emphasis on the R. Definitely should've put this up against the Mach-1.
Good lord .. the sound!!!!!
I don't claim to have the best eyes, but what I see there definitely seems like some sandbagging going on. At around 0:39, the Dark Horse's rear end appears to squat, which suggests that it wasn't putting down full power to begin with. And then at 0:45, the front-end dives, which seems to indicate that it was braking. I just call it like I see it.
And it appears that about 2 weeks ago there is a severe case of COPE. I just call it how I see it
I wasn’t sure so I kept rewatching and dude you’re right…
Yea, I caught that too!!!! Definitely some sandbagging going on!!!!!!
I love ❤️ that GT350 R, I want 2 of them. 🥰🥰🥰
I'm a Mopar guy but the GT350 is the only mustang I have ever been completely in love with. Hell I still think about buying one. Voodoo is an incredible engine.
Still a flat plane. Never can be a muscle car americal icon
Now Dark Horse vs Mach 1...

Gt350r has 581 crank according to motortrends test. Dynos are showing low 400's for the dark horse so there's at a least a 100hp gap here.
Gt350s should forever be gaining value
Until the warranty runs out. Values will drop massively afterwards. Too many great options in the market that are more reliable.
Nothing at that price range is even close to as special as 350's.@@ClickbaitMotorsports
@@Mureftw Are you a GT350 investor? Auto group or sole investor? You guys troll all the online venues, I guess you have to to upkeep the value. Once the warranties run out on the Voodoos those values will tank. Too unreliable. The Mach 1 HP is the complete package, and for boost, fhe GT500.
Name a car that is more special for 60-70k than a GT350. I own an s550 GT500, not a 350 btw.@@ClickbaitMotorsports
@@Mureftw “Special” relative. Let’s also include the ADMs that dealerships charged when the GT350R came out, which jumped the price to $70K-$90K. That easily puts it in range with the MKV Supra Manual, and the Camaro ZL1. Both are also very special. Personally, I’ll take a Mach 1 HP over the GT350R. It still revs high enough, handles the same as the R, looks incredible and …drumroll….its way more reliable. Second choice, MKV Supra Manual. The GT350R just has the FPC sounds that is not far off a Gen 3 Coyote. It’s no LT5 FPC.
That pre-tune v8🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤❤️
Ya that totally looks like a 26 horsepower difference...
The DH is also heavier, 200-300 pounds.
I didn’t expect the 350 to gap the dark horse like that!!!
I did. 5.2 vs 5.0😎
Same ,tought it was gonna be closer, unless the guy in the dark horse didn't shift as fast as he could've
More hp and less weight
Short video but cool.
Older GT350 is superior to own and much cooler than a dark horse.
Maybe having a couple of flat screen TV's mounted to the dash is what's hurting the S650
Would love to see this race from a dig. That would be more interesting since the GT350 doesn’t make any real power below 5k RPM despite having 26 more peak hp than the Dark Horse Of course, the GT350R is going to win a roll race due to the higher redline (8250) and being lighter.
Yeah facts was thinking the same thing
Damn that was a teaser....😵
The sooner the Whipples go on these S650 stangs the better!
I believe that the Gen 4 Coyote's power is overrated. Most dyno test produce a result of 418hp to the rear wheels. My 2018 5.0 got 430hp stock....
Keep in mind that the Dark Horse has the 10-speed and the Shelby is a manual.
Biggest difference isn’t the trans but the motor. 5.2 vs 5.0
@@mikehughes8023still impressive how a manual gaps a 10 speed
@@mikehughes8023yes and no I’d say the weight difference, the crappy tier 3 emissions and the negative 26hp really hurt the dark horse in this race. No way around it

dude when you realize the price that you can currently get these 2 cars it all the sudden becomes hilarious.
VOODOO FTW!!!
By the way if you put dark horse on the race track against Shelby gt350R the difference/gap would be even larger than what we saw in the rolling race lol 😂
It is a gt350R
Bruh it’s a Shelby vs a non Shelby
We will never know until someone actually puts them head to head, the dark horse is also track biult ,the mach 1 was faster than the Shelby gt350r on one of the circuits ,I forget witch one, it was a test track I think
@@chrism869I think it was the VIR track on C&D
I love my R.
Yeeesh... that shift in the Dark Horse at 00:38. Was uh ... not their best work I'm sure. 😬😬
How many miles did the dark horse have on it before the race? I’ve read that the break in is deceiving. First hundred miles on the darkhorse Dynos at 340.. after 300 miles dyno at 430. After a thousand miles dyno read 480. So break in is s factor
Nope... Steeda dynoed a Dark Horse before and after break in and it actually made 3 rwhp LESS after break in...
Yeah looks about right
the s650 mustang would be amazing if it wasnt so heavy
IIRC the GT350R is about 3600lbs and the newer Mustang Dark Horse 2024 is about 4100lbs ...
Nice to see though!

The Shelby just has a quick shift than the dark horse. But I admire the interest that the manual has.
@0:47 that's why they call it the dark horse the farther it got behind the darker it's profile got 🤷🏿♂️😂
The 350r singsssss
This is b.s. Hennessey! Dark Horse stopped accelerating after 3 seconds, was even ahead. Can see the car stop and coast. It's shut down well before the side rails.
You can still trade yours in before they tank.
Why would I trade my Cadillac Escalade or Widebody Charger in for a freaking Ford? This is just a sales pitch for Hennessey next kit anyway. Duh.
Looks like at about :38-:39, the Dark Horse took a nose dive pretty damn hard so it’s a manual car. Try a manual DH with a competent driver against a GT350 or GT350R. R’s also have carbon fiber wheels which make a difference. Try a 10r80 DH but start in the right gear with advanced trac off. I bet it will be a different outcome.

Do y’all not know how to run the Dark horse it being Auto or is it just that Slow?
You can’t say the Dark Horse is bad even though it got gapped cause it’s meant to be more of a track version of the Mustang. Unlike the GT350 and 550 which are meant for straight line speed. I can’t wait for S650 Shelby as well!
The gt350 is specifically made for the track😂 it’s not made for straight line racing either buddy
Brooo bahahha what a dum dum . The gt350 is a TRACK SPECIFIC CAR
My bad I looked it up now and y’all are right thank you for letting me know.
The GT 350 R was Fords Track Car from the factory. Speaking from experience at Daytona, the GT 350 is not a " straight line car".
Bro pulled 3 cars on him what on earth
Should’ve used a regular GT350 vs the Dark Horse that’s a GT350R top of the line GT350 I wonder if Ford a make a performance version of the Dark Horse like a Dark Horse R 🧐
The r and the regular 350 are the same power it's just more track car . Just a what ? Rear set delete . Suspension and all that won't make a difference it was a roll race .
Ford does make a Dark Horse R you can order right now. It's on their website. Not street legal though.
Even without carbon fiber wheels, GT350 will perform similarly due to overall weight and powerband like homes describes above
That just doesn''t look right. The Dark Horse looks like a spins or misses a gear or something about 1 second into the race. If it's the auto, then I don't have any kind of excuse for it
Might just be a factory freak GT350 too.
looks like they hit the brakes in the Dark Horse at 0:45 too based on how the front end pitched downwards

To this day there still hasn’t been a Mustang made thats as good, special, and engaging as the Shelby GT350r. The GT500 is just as good and faster but is missing the manual
Only bad thing about that voo doo is that fact is only last a few oil changes.
Nahh big dawg, that would only be true if it had a recall. No recalls on 350s , just a few mishaps cuz theres not alot of reviews of 350s compared to other cars. 🫡

One eats 3quarts every 1k mile😂 thats every 350. Thats not an issue thats call life choices my guy. And the funny thing is… the engine usually isnt the main problem. The issue is Dealerships dont take care of them and treat them like any other car. Theres multiple instances where dealerships neglect to replace the oil in a 2year old barely driven car (mine) n my engine was knocking when i got it. After i changed it and added some additives in it. Its fine. Some people just arnt as lucky as me but that doesnt mean they dont know how to take care of their car. Weighs much less
Dude wtf🙁! You expect 5.0 to beat a 5.2?
@@mikehughes8023 Never said that. Just expected it to be closer.
Agreed. Something's weird here. A Coyote/10R80 has a way of hurting the feelings of lighter/more powerful manual cars. 26 HP and 150 less lbs shouldn't give a 6 speed Mustang built on essentially the same platform the win.
EDIT: Especially like that. The GT350R pulleyed away like he was working with an extra 150 WHP. I've seen ported/pulleyed Eaton Cobras give much better runs to Whippled/Kenne Bell Cobras while making over 100 WHP less, and both being M6 cars.
I don't know what the case is for the Dark Horse, but a lot of 350s put down 50+ plus horsepower over the 526. That coupled with carbon wheels could do it.
Performance numbers don't reflect that kind of gap and old 10spd GT's are better than that. GT350 still wins regardless but something is off.
Oh boy another roll race . Everyone is to damn afraid to put a GT350 up against a DH with the 10R80 on a Heads up drag race . What are y’all so scared of ? Are you afraid the GT350 just might get it’s but whipped ?
Why would you put an auto vs manual? U sound goofy.
I have the exact same 350R as the one shown here. The 350/350R loses against pretty much everything from a dig because it's not designed and engineered to race in a straight line. The 350R is built to tear thru corners on a track and it does that as well or better than some cars that cost 3X as much. Even from a roll you're gonna get embarrassed if you don't know how to drive one. They're not straight line cars. They're not designed for low end torque. These cars don't really start to breathe until around 4,800rpms and are designed for max output between 4,800 -8250. Anyone who knows how to drive one will tell you from a roll you better drop 2 gears min or you're gonna bog down. I don't know why people keep trying to dig race these cars. I had an all wheel drive CT6 TT 6cyl Cadillac that would eat a 350R alive redlight to redlight and that thing probably weighed 800lbs more. The GT350's have been track cars all the way back to the 60's and the 500's were always the straight line cars.
The reason there was so much hype about the 350's was what they're capable of on a track....with curves. As far as all the talk about them being slow, don't believe it. People are too used to watching videos of boosted/built cars, there's no such thing as a slow 526hp car no matter who built it.
You might be surprised how those 8250rpm shifts get down the road when she starts to eat. Just enjoy whatever you drive there's always someone faster out there. Personally I dont care. They're gonna have to pry the keyfob out of my hand when I die cause I'm never selling that car ✌️
The Dud Horse continues to dissapoint. If thats a automatic use it for a boat anchor. The GT 350 is timeless and that VOODOO makes it unique unlike the other wannabees.
😬
Why not compare DHR to Shelby GT350R that's a better comparison of the 2 cars. The DH will lose due to the nature of its engine and the HP manual vs manual.
@doberchic I would just rather see an apples to apples thing tbh. I'm not expecting the gt350 to lose. Even the mach 1 and other track mustangs lose to it from a roll. Now a dig it would have lost. But its a Shelby I expect it to win. But I'd also like to see more races and everything because I feel they left in the gt 350 PowerBand. But all you need is some tuning and another 20 hp to make it even. And the DH would probably win. But someone raced a gt 350 with a DH and the race was closer. So I have my thoughts so I say more content is needed
@doberchic I like this generation and the old ones. I just think it's funny that this generation this hated. But in 3 yes gonna be well liked 😂. They did this with the s550 also amd the generations before it.
The DHR is not a street legal car - not the same thing
@brentbass8094 idc about that lol. I'm talking about in terms of weight savings. That's why I said DHR vs GT350R. Either way I'd still like to see more races regardless. Rolls, track, digs.. just to get consistent data. Then go against the mach 1 and other cars
Probably the muscle car I'd get...The GT350R 💯💯💪🏼💪🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸
More horse power, lighter ....expected result.
Not even a fair comparison. Gt350 is a totally different engine. The dark horse is basically the new mach 1. Thats what it should be compared to.
I am a mustang fan, we have a Mustang GT Conv 2019, Dark horse should be here in a few weeks. BUT WHY are people completely obsessed with a rolling start race, its the dumbest , absolutely most insecure thing in racing. Its only purpose is to try and get a result that could not be done from zero. The 350R probably has it either way. but I bet I will have to go to the track to find out for sure. Dont think many stock 350 guys could handle risking their feelings getting tore up LOL
Not everyone can afford to go to the track and you’re going to street race on a roll which is 90% of the time people race, you can’t just stop on the highway and do digs lol
I'm pretty happy with my 350 haha
15-23 >
Should of went from a dig.
old ones looks better..
Bad race very sloppy should do a real test from a dig then a roll but transmissions should also both be Manuel to do a better comparison
For those curious as to why the dark horse lost so badly even with the 10r80 it’s from a multitude of things not just it makes 500hp vs 526hp
The gt350R has a couple major advantages,
1) carbon fiber wheels are a huge advantage they free up “they don’t make extra hp they free it up like a lightweight drive shaft or under drive pulleys” 10-15whp depending on the car
2) overall weight is significantly different that dark horse is damn near 4000 pounds most gt350Rs are 3600ish “don’t quote Me” it’s a good 2-300 pounds less that’s huge
3) powerband differences this is another one most people won’t realize but the current gen 4 coyotes are nerfed pretty bad because of tier 3 emissions, they make nice power up top but boy they gave it up in the mid range and bottom end of the powerband. Aka the dark horse would need 50 additional Hp or so to be in line with that GT350R
You explained that third part perfectly, I’m interested in seeing the powerband once the cars can
breathe better, cause the only difference between the gen 3 and 4 blocks is the change from timing chain to belt
Not sure what these dark horses are dynoing at either, but I know the 350s were putting out on avg. around 50 more HP than the 526 as advertised.
Regardless of speculation Dark Horse got its ass handed to it.
Honestly, henessey testings are highly unreliable.. they don't give any numbers.. no footage except long range shot of few seconds.. especially if they compare cars woth their modifed cars.. like the recent video of z06 vs ct5v blackwing 1000hp..
Looks like the dark horse missed a gear
The 350r has 26 more horse power. Do a dig race
Humiliate Darkhorse twice in same video?
