Work in a Pub[hotel] in the mid seventies where he was performing,he was well passed his used by date, was drinking before the show ,during the show and after the show JD I think? I was not expecting fireworks, but when he had a mike in his hand,he certainly was something special. That year we had some very good act, including ac/dc, O'keefe was as good as any,at his peak he would have blown them away. A very good showman.

Fun fact about Johnny . In 1973 he appeared at the Sunbury festival in my home city . The reaction to him by 35,000 mostly hippies was indeed hostile . By the end of his 3 song set he had bought the house down. As far as J.O'Ks performance on stage goes he always said ‘It didn’t matter how you sang the song,’ he said, ‘it mattered what you did.’

This clip was all that remained of a 1959 filmed rock concert. Recently the entire film has been found and is in the process of being restored. I think funding is a problem. O'Keefe was the "king" of rock in Australia. He wrote and produced, had TV shows and promoted other artists. Visiting US acts were reluctant to follow him on stage because he had the crowd following. He toured the US and recorded for Liberty Records. Some of his songs were local hits in the US. A near death car accident curtailed his touring. He had many hits in Australia which continued to the mid 60's. Then lack of chart success, booze and drugs took their toll and he died in 1978 aged just 43. She's My Baby, Don't You Know (Pretty Baby), Move Baby Move, Why Do They Doubt Our Love, Six O'Clock Rock, I Thank You, many others. He released 50 singles.

Fun fact. There was a stage musical here in Aust about Johnny O’Keefe’s life. It was called “Shout”. Your boy David Campbell played Johnny and did a brilliant job. There’s not much David can’t do. He also recently played the late, great Bobby Darin in the stage musical “Dream Lover” here in Australia. He was also brilliant in that and won an award for his performance in that.

In the really early days of Aussie rock, cover tracks of US music were extremely common. Because the artists and even the songs often didn't get all the way over here otherwise. So, artists like (but not only) O'Keefe would recreate, as faithfully as possible, the big hits from the USA so Aussies could see it. The music from artists like James Brown was extremely popular and would've been an influence for many in that era.

The backing vocals here is from another Australian band of the era - the Delltones.
Iggy Pop Real Wild Child was an adaptation and homage to JOK and his hit “Wild One”.

I never saw JOK singing with that face. He had a bad car accident that messed up his face he thought. I think he was cuter after the accident now I have seen this. It started him on a spiral. In and out of mental hospitals. My Dad loved him and he taught me to love him. My Mother loved him too.
I remember standing on a corner in Sydney waiting to cross the road when I was 15. JOK stopped his big convertible next to me and something in his eyes stopped me from crossing the road. I could feel how sad he was so I stayed where I was. He went around the block 7 times while I stood there. Don’t know how many times before I got there or after my friend made me leave. I remember telling my parents that he was on the way down again and on the news that night they told us he had been admitted to hospital again.
He died not long after that at 43 I think. The same age my Mother and grandfather died. He was loved and he was great. I did see him live once.

My Aunty was John's backup singer for 5 year. She recorded Mockingbird with him. She was only 16 when she started singing with John.
Some people wanted her to go to the US, but she stayed here and had a family instead.
John Farnham started as Johnny O'Keefe support act, and Marg tells me of a time they were all on tour in the tour bus, and John (Farnham) was a hoot. She said they had a blast, and what you see is what you get with John. He's a genuinely great block as well as being the GOAT.
When they did Sunbury (australia's Woodstock) John (O'Keefe) made them wear their usual suits and they were almost boo'd off stage, but within moments John had the crowd eating out of his hands. Not the best singer, but a great showman.

Hey Nick, cheers again to you man for showcasing Australian talent. Yep, Johnny "The Wild One" was an Aussie rock n roll pioneer and was no doubt inspired by the great American artists at the time such as James Brown, Elvis and Bobby Darin, he was like Australia's version of all 3 rolled into one. I remember my parents telling us about seeing him in concert in Sydney when they were young at the Rushcutters Bay stadium which was Sydney's rock n roll mecca for local and overseas artists. Another of his big hits was "She's my baby" from 1966 ruclips.net/video/ANQ5TW9HVkY/видео.html and one of the first singles I bought as a 10 year old music nut, the ballad "She wears my ring" which really showcases his vocal ability ruclips.net/video/_UXJhbqc3E0/видео.html an Aussie rock legend RIP, All the best

I saw JO'K perform several times in the 1960s. I thought J."OK was O.K. though nothing special. In 1977 My team from Canberra played a game of social cricket, in Wollongong, N.S.W. After the game the home team took us to the local Leagues Club. I thought this place was great - cheap beer and ridiculously cheap and excellent food. Both were subsidised by the massive array of poker machines in the joint - literally hundreds of them..
The feature cabaret act was J.O'K. When he started to sing, he almost demanded everyone's attention, to the extent that people stopped playing the poker machines and drifted towards the stage, in awe of a master at work. Apart from rapturous applause after each song, there was no other sound, not even the clatter of those old-fashioned bloody poker machines. It was because of the mood I was in, or J.OK had become a consummate performer since the 1960s. Maybe a bit of both. Great night though.
Note: "Leagues clubs{ are social venues, usually owned by return service men and women organisations.

Nice anecdote. Quick correction for your final note. You have described RSL clubs - returned services league. Leagues clubs are different to RSL clubs. They are primarily established to propagate/support the game of rugby league - either local junior clubs or professional rugby league teams. They are owned by members and are non-profit - meaning that money has to be invested in facilities for members, or used to help community groups.

Poker machines destroyed all the good music venues here in Melbourne. Was a time to play the pokies you had to go north of the border up to Albury or somewhere. They are an absolute blight on society. I think Joan Kirner legalised them in the early 90's. I remember the first time I played them was about 86 on a cricket club trip away to Albury at the SS and A club. At the same club I remember asking for a pot of Vic and the bartender looked at me funny and said "Are you a Mexican" we sell schooners here. Hilarious, the old south of the border joke, I wish they kept the pokies north of the border. Sadly they have ruined a lot of lives.

There was a rumour Johny O keefe was trying to break into the American market and this is his arrangement for Shout. He performed it for the record company in the USA and they took it and got the writers to sing it to this arrangement. This performance was in Australia one month after it was released in the USA.

    • @blueycarlton
      @blueycarlton 5 месяцев назад +1

It was not recorded in the US. In 1960 he recorded at Liberty Records Gold Star studios in LA, She's My Baby, Jubilee, Don't You Know Pretty Baby, It's Too Late.
She's My Baby sold 100,000 units in the US, It's Too Late went to No.1 in New Orleans. Shout was recorded with the Delltones in Sydney in 1959.
O'Keefe probably played Shout to Liberty's A&R man who he accidentally met in a drug store when he was trying to get the store manager to put his records on the juke box. This chance encounter lead to a recording session. Cringeworthy, Liberty billed him as The Kangaroo Kid.

Johnny O'Keefe was amazing - nobody else came close. I went to a J O'K show once - he made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
In his early days he did a lot of covers of big name US stars such as Ricky Nelson. Technically the recording quality in the Australian studio was not as good as the US studios, nor was the mastering, but J O"K was a much better singer, and he knew a few tricks of the trade to add excitement. Play "Just a Little Too Much" by Nelson - it's nice, he did a good job. Then play the same song by J O"K - it sounds like he's really pleased to know you, and he's enjoying singing.
J O'K was booked to warm up the audience when Bill Haley and the Comets came to Sydney at the height of Haley's fame. On seeing J O'K perform and how he had worked up the audience, old Bill didn't want to go on - he knew he would be very tame and a let down after J O'K.
But J O'K was crazy all right.

He was pretty cool for our part of the white world of rock...it's not a patch on the Isley Bros. version but it's cool and we needed it. He didn't have much of a voice but he could do a rock n shout.

This is one of those songs, like John farnham’s ‘one’, where when Australian artists used to cover overseas hits when Australian radio stations would not play overseas artists. We firmly believed Johnny o’keefe was the original singer of this song 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The story goes he was a stickler for his whole crew hitting perfect pitch. The most thrilling part of the song for me was when someone on the backing vocals did that kind of wolf howl. There was more of it on the record that in this concert.

JOK had his own tv show on our public broadcaster ABC, on Sunday night at 6pm, called "6 O'clock Rock", it was kinda like Bandstand but not quite the same...we also had a version of Bandstand hosted by a very young Brian Henderson, who went on to become one of our best newsreaders...
In the 80s(?) NSW had Brian Henderson, and Victoria had Brian Naylor, both trusted and revered evening newsreaders for the same network, so the network used an ad campaign featuring them in each state "Brian told me"...or something like that...

My Mum said i used to stop and stare every time J O'K came on the TV (when i was about 18 months old). you should also try The Wild One which he got his only writing credit on, and has been covered by US artists. He died around the same time and age as Elvis as well.
