Marcia found out she was pregnant at 16 when she arrived in Australia to be in Hair. At 17 she was a very young mum. They do look like they could be sisters. Deni has the unmistakable fast vibrato. Marcia's voice is divine and she still looks sensational.
Deni started out as a backing singer for INXS and Kylie Minogue. She starred as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, wrote a song for Beyoncé, played for the Queen.. they’re both beautiful and talented women!

This song was one of them. Deni performed it at the 1992 Aria awards, and as good as the Rockmelons were it was clear Deni was the star and they were just along for the ride.
"That Word (L.O.V.E.)" was the other big hit for them.

I can just see them dancing around the kitchen singing! I had the privilege of seeing Marcia live about 25 years ago and she was fabulous.

Marcia was recruited by a talent scout of some repute from USA as a teenager to be in Jesus Christ Superstar. She found out she was expecting a baby, still performed, and Deni was born in Australia. Lucky for us she has performed ever since, making Australia her home, Deni grew up and had a singing career of her own.
Not intending to be a smart-arse, however, Marcia was recruited to appear in Hair; her appearance in Jesus Christ Superstar was after Deni was born.

Marcia arrived from America alone at 16. She found out she was pregnant when she got here with Deni. She auditioned and got the part in Hair the stage musical. She was so brave and she always had a quiet dignity. She has always had my respect.
Marcia raised Deni alone because she said her daughter deserved that. She never asked for anything and she raised her with Grace. She worked to pay for what they needed but it wasn’t done then to ask for Government help. I don’t know why she never went back but I am so glad she didn’t. Both of those women have earned respect and we love them. I am happy you chose this one.
Omg I just love Marcia. Her beautiful, rich voice is like velvet. Marcia because huge in Aus on the music scene very quickly, not surprisingly! She is the original Australian Queen of Pop! ❤️ As for Deni, such a strong incredible voice. I get goosebumps listening to them

Blown away. I haven't seen this vid before. Not often you see a mother and daughter team this good as you say. The improvisation and chemistry between them is awesome. Great to see how much you enjoyed watching it too.
now, that was something else. Two beautiful women really enjoying singing together. When you think that Marcia came to Australia on her own at 16, performed in the musical "Hair" then went on to "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Queen of Pop" three consecutive years 1976-78. What a performer and Deni follows in her footsteps. Loved that video, thanks for showing mate.

Deni had a huge hit with this song back in the early 90's with The Rockmelons (you should definitely check out that version). I remember seeing them live and was captivated by Deni's voice and beauty, the vibrato in her voice is so distinctive. You would love the songs 'That Word (L.O.V.E.)', 'It's Not Over' with The Rockmelons and her first solo hit 'It's Alright'.

Grew up listening to Marcia and have always been a huge fan. Deni had a very short time in the shadow of her mum, but the sheer force of her talent, won us over and showed she’s as much a bright star as her mum. I think Deni has a deeper tone to her voice that makes it almost velvety. Their voices compliment eachother so well in this. Thanks for the vid 👍🏼

I saw Marcia playing Mary Magdalene in 1973 and Deni took on the same role as Mary in the late 80's both are brilliant YES it is in the GENE's

This funky/reggae-ish version is basically Deni’s version when she was a member of the band, The Rockmelons in the early 90’s.
I was blessed to see Deni play Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, with Jon Stevens as Judas in the stage production of JCS back in the early 90s. Kate Ceberano was on a break and Deni took her place. She’s an incredible performer too.. and just as beautiful as her Mumma, who I saw in concert with John English Jokes n Queens tour some years before. Xxx

Marcia's vowel pronunciation and vibrato reminds me of another songstress across the ditch who were huge there in the 80s and are still performing today. Betty-Anne Monga from Ardijah. They're a fan favourite and still performing in this part of the world. Checkout their music - Watchin U, Silly Love Songs, Oh Baby, Do To You, Love So Right, Give Me Your Number etc.

Marcia Hines is one of the few live acts I went to see, twice. Another one was Joan Armatrading, from the UK. Oh, and Johnny Farnham once.

Deni was a backup singer for Jimmy Barnes in the early 90’s too. She’s in this video “When Your Love is Gone” which is an awesome song. Mahalia and Jackie Barnes are in it as toddlers, singing at the end.

Marcia came to Australia from Boston as a 16 year old to sing in the stage productions of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. She didn’t really know where she was going to. I think that I heard once that she thought that she was going to Austria. She might have already been pregnant with Deni when she arrived in Australia. She stayed and was Australia’s most popular female vocalist in the 1970’s. Marcia had a very long and successful music career in Australia, though perhaps not so much outside of Australia. Marcia Hines was a household name back then. Deni had success too, but not as widely known and loved as her mother.
Marcia has been a constant on Australian TV since I was a kid. I absolutely adore her. I remember magazines with Marcia when Deni was a little one. So happy Deni has made a happy life also, xx

I love the daughters voice so much already! As soon as she started singing. That tone is so rich and strong and unmistakable, that she has that unique vibrato, which I’ll admit takes a second to get used to, but it’s cool and it doesn’t ruin anything.

You need to listen to the clip/radio/release version. It was releases in Australia in 1991 by the Australian group the Rockmelons feat Deni Hines, where the song peaked at Number 5 on the Australian single charts.
