MADNESS!! One of the pioneers of ska pop! I always loved the group's goofy style, which is present in pretty much every video they did. The lead singer, Graham "Suggs" McPherson, added so much joy and fun to the band, which continues to this day. Other great Madness songs include "One Step Beyond", "House of Fun", and "It Must Be Love". The band was formed in Camden, North London, England.

Yes, they really should have had the video for Our House too. Seeing the lyrics onscreen is good (to understand what they're going on about), but the vidoe is great for this song.

Madness are a national treasure in the UK, they are so British that I can understand why their music may not travel that well. Suggs sings in his own London accent, and that's the great appeal, it's real, with no pandering to a 'mid-Atlantic' accent you hear with so many other UK artists. Other than the obvious influence of Ska music, the other main influence is Ray Davies of The Kinks, who trail blazed in the 1960's with his lyrics of London working class life and it's colourful characters. Both Ray Davies and Suggs are no nonsense balladeers, telling stories of everyday life in a direct, often humorous and creative way. The songs are strongly rhythmical, clipped and tight, designed to get you on your feet, no room for egos and flowing solo's, the whole band is about the beat.
@@bcafed trust me, they were and remain exciting fir we Brits too. Suggs is a national treasure, and the Our House video one of the best ever made, and always brings a smile to my face.
It's hilarious that someone that used to only listen to rap, is complaining that lyrics are not being "sung"! Yay, Jordan, you've come a long way, I love to see how you appreciate killer vocals now!
Like others, I was thinking the same thing. I must say, however, that I like the verses and other interludes better than the chorus. I think those parts are “sung” just fine - not spoken at all.
I like how Jay was honest that he didn't care for it too much. I grew up with the song and like it but I appreciate his honesty. You can't love every song. But I also like how Amber liked different elements in it. Love your reactions!
I feel they will only really 'get' the craziness if they watch the original video with the skinhead waking up, and then the Finsbury Park one where they caused an earthquake. To still pull the crowds and have such a mixture of people enjoying the music after so many years, might help impress upon them that in the case of Madness it's about more than the lyrics or music individually
One Step Beyond is actually an intro to an unfinished song that the band ran out of studio time to finish, so the engineer just looped what they did have and a stone cold classic was born 😃
Rap fan doesn't like song because there is not enough singing in it. This gave me a chuckle. Now you know how most of us feel about rap. This song has a really impressive musical arrangement. The verses are not being spoken; they are being sung, and the melody is not that easy to sing considering how many words and notes there are. I think because the lead singer is so chill, it sounds simpler than it is. This was the feel-good song of the 80s. When it came on the radio or MTV, everyone would stop what they were doing and start singing along. It is still one of the most iconic songs of all time.
Need to actually watch the live video from 1992 Finsbury Park, where the crowd dancing along to the track One Step Beyond actually caused an earthquake, as was widely reported

Clearly it isn't always about the singing, although that part is covered quite well here. The music, composition and instrumentation are the point of a song like this. It's beautiful.
This is another band you have to see in action live. Early performances, the whole band and crowd are dancing from start to finish, it's unreal! Suggs had the moves!
Madness are British, from London. They came out of the late '70s/early '80s Ska/Two-Tone scene (hence the strong horn section) but became more mainstream as they gained success. They specialised in funny, tongue-in-cheek songs (not all of them though), and their videos are hilarious, with all sorts of clowning around. 'Our House' is honestly a decent song, but if you live in the UK you can get sick-to-death of hearing it on the radio too often.

Madness is a great band! Late '70s, '80s. They were a new wave, ska/reggae-punk (yall hear the horns and musical tone), post-punk from the UK (very English accent). Should've seen the video! They are funny, next videos to watch, "One Step Beyond" , "House of Fun", "It Must be Love", "Baggy Trousers", etc. Also, with this kind of genre, don't expect opera music like vocals ! lol. It could be worse (mumble rap).
Madness are an English band. Those are London accents you can hear. Some of their other hits include 'One step beyond', 'Baggy trousers', 'Night boat to Cairo, 'It must be love', 'House of fun', and 'My girl'.
Madness played this song live at Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee with the backdrop of Buckingham Palace - really cool graphics were projected on the Palace behind the band. They ended the song with a bit of improvisation "One's house in the middle of the street" - "One's" is a reference to the Queen, whose house they were playing in front of.
I'm with Amber I have always enjoyed this song - I was a kid when it came out. Madness are British - You two are delightfully bad at identifying British accents - that's very American and adorable of you both.... They are English - North London I believe. House of Fun (similar vibe) or It Must Be Love would be the next songs to check out. PS - Amber is looking outrageously cute today.
I can usually narrow an accent down to the country of origin, although I do believe I could identify a Liverpool accent over a few others....maybe....LOL. I grew up on a Navy base and was exposed to accents from all over the world at a very early age. Got a special place in my heart for the UK though, having a LOT of English and Irish blood in my family tree (also seems to be an American trait, tracing families... although I'll gladly admit to being wrong on that point)
Please do again with the original video. It brings the magic of the song. You can still understand the lyrics. Definitely a Classic MTV video from my old days LOL. Thank You Both for such an awesome RUclips Channel!!
Another Madness song to react to is 'One Step Beyond'. It really is performance art so you need to see them perform it and not just a lyric video. You are in for a treat!! It could be a fun one to watch with your kids too!
You really should have reacted to the official video (With Lyrics)… Their music is great but most of their Madness and fun loving stuff comes from watching them perform and play together, I would always go with the official video’s if you react to more Madness, you can always catch up with the lyrics later….xxx Now watch the video and have yourselves some fun, even if it’s not recorded for youtube….xxx
You have to watch the video, it's so great. It's sort of hilarious that you guys decided to do a lyric video for a song with such an iconic and brilliant video.
This song has such a warm, nostalgic place in my heart. I had just graduated high school the year before and life seemed boundless. The music is great as well as the sentiment.
Madness truly are an English iconic band. Performing this song in particular for the queen on the roof of Buckingham palace says how much the country adore them
That’s the style of Madness. Think you’ll find Suggs, the lead singer, has the same approach to most their songs. I understand why lyrics would be helpful but you really need to see the official videos Madness did to accompany their songs.
Graham "Suggs" McPherson has a great voice, it is more highlighted in other songs, perhaps. Madness were great musical sociologists, they were really impactful in sharing a view of English society that others didn't and that would maybe be different to other's social experience. They are also a visual band, and while I get that seeing the lyrics helps, their videos are part of the total experience, too. I hope you grasp their value in future songs of theirs that you review.
This came out when I was a teen and we were the house in the middle of the street, where we all hung out. I love this song and band. Ska is so awesome.
I was 13 when this song came out, and as the youngest of 7 kids, this song definitely spoke to me! When my kids watch the cartoon The Loud House, they always think "this is how Mom grew up," and totally a Madness feel! 😁 I'm with everyone who says One. Step. BEYOOOOONNND!!
I can't believe you have not done any reaction to Adam Ant... Another great 80s English alternative synth pop band. "Desperate but not Serious," "Strip," "Stand and Deliver," "Goody Two Shoes," etc.
So cool that you guys are expanding into alternative music. If you are up for an adventure, try Oingo Boingo, "Just Another Day" or " Dead Man's Party".
This song fit perfectly within the context of the early 80s. The song was incredibly popular and was an MTV and radio favorite. They were British, in the middle of the 2nd British invasion, so that made it quirkily cool. There is something about the song that just touched everyone's button. It's a song about a house and the family in it. In a way, parts of that song could be about any of our homes. I think it is a song about a home that we can't go back to once we're grown. That's what I think touches everyone's button.
Wow I'm really surprised Jay didn't feel Madness, the lead singer is called Suggs and I feel that the genre of SKA is what encapsulated his voice he's not a great singer but he fits so well with the sound. These guys are still touring and are an absolute blast to watch live the whole stage is taken up with a massive amount of instrumental talent. Check out Last Boat to Cairo, Baggy Trousers, House of Fun, One step beyond, My girl, Lovestruck. ➕ solo Suggs track Cecillia
I was blessed to see Madness in concert they are so good they opened up for the band The Police, Thompson twins, Devo.. it was during an MTV first USA tour in the 80s.. and it started in Arizona
The song has more depth than the first listen. Just one line in the background changes the feel of the song - "Something tells you that you've got to move away from it." Even though it describes the idyllic suburban life, there's still the anxiety and the yearning to move away.
It’s not just about tricks vocally, it’s the style a feeling. This band were inspired by artists like Prince Buster who influenced a lot of Ska and reggae bands. Madness songs to look out for include Baggy Trousers, Wings of a Dove, House of Fun, Driving in my car, My Girl, yesterday’s men and their version of Labi Siffre’s It Must Be Love ( though I prefer his). Ska and Two Tone is a great thing to explore so many great bands Bad Manners, Selecter, The Specials, The Beat (known elsewhere as The English Beat) you have got to get the whole rude boy style and the influences.
Another one from my college years! I love that you guys are checking out such a diverse array of artists. So many of these songs were released long before you were born, and bring back great memories for me.
For Female Friday: Ronnie Spector - ‘Be My Baby’ Bette Midler - ‘From a Distance’ Toni Braxton - ‘Un-Break My Heart’ Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ Other notables: Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing,’ Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You,’ Kool and The Gang - ‘Celebration,’ Dan Fogelberg - ‘Same Old Lang Syne’ Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father’
Our House is one of the most popular songs in the UK. Another super popular UK song you really need to listen to is 'Dirty Old Town' by 'The Pogues'. Absolutely awesome song!
Every time I hear this song, I immediately have to follow it up with The Kinks "Come Dancing" as far as painting a picture songs. Describing a childhood memory or memories so well is a great journey to go on.

I first heard this song when I was 13 in 1983 and became an immediate and lifelong Madness fan. One of my favorite bands of all time and I still love their music now at 51yrs old. For whatever reason these guys made it BIG everywhere but, the US. For anyone that doesn't know they are one of the biggest selling acts of all time in England. They still sell out arenas in Europe and still make new albums. They tour almost every year now at Christmas time, my wife and have an Xmas tradition of going to London to catch a show about every other year or so. Thanks to covid we couldn't go these last couple years but just a few Xmases ago we saw them with about 13,000 other Madness fans at yet another sold out show in London at the O2 Arena. Not bad for a band that only managed to be a one hit wonder here in the US
I loved this video as a kid. The band members played all the characters and were showing the chaos of a very full house. They are from England by the way
I like how the lyrics at the end reveals that their house "was" where all these things occurred. It was a sweet, poignant reminiscence of a time gone by. 🥲

There are so many great Madness songs but a must hear is “one step beyond”
Also, “house of fun”
Madness are an English band. Those are London accents you can hear. Some of their other hits include 'One step beyond', 'Baggy trousers', 'Night boat to Cairo, 'It must be love', 'House of fun', and 'My girl'.
Their videos were hilarious. They had such a comic flair. They were huge in the UK in the 1980s but this song was their only major US hit.
I was a huge Madness fan in the early 80's. Seen them at Glasgow Apollo in 1983, what a concert that was!!
Right on the part of London 😉
They're English thanks.
If they saw the video they wouldn't need to ask where the band is from. Very English indeed.
Spot on with the area, I used to live around the corner from the sax player in Kentish Town (NW5)
Not Madness, but in the same Two-Tone genre - The Specials - "A Message To You Rudy". you will LOVE it.
Ones step beyond still fills every dance floor. Legends.
Please do again with the original video. It brings the magic of the song. You can still understand the lyrics. Definitely a Classic MTV video from my old days LOL. Thank You Both for such an awesome RUclips Channel!!
Pure happiness from back when I was in the 8th grade! This song slaps ... love it.
Another Madness song to react to is 'One Step Beyond'. It really is performance art so you need to see them perform it and not just a lyric video. You are in for a treat!! It could be a fun one to watch with your kids too!
Good call.
Welcome to SKA!! Long before Rap ever appeared the difference is you can hear the words !!
this song always brings me instantly back to being 9 and watching this video on mtv in 1983...songs like this are why the 80s were so cool
You really should have reacted to the official video (With Lyrics)…
Their music is great but most of their Madness and fun loving stuff comes from watching them perform and play together, I would always go with the official video’s if you react to more Madness, you can always catch up with the lyrics later….xxx
Now watch the video and have yourselves some fun, even if it’s not recorded for youtube….xxx
You have to watch the video, it's so great. It's sort of hilarious that you guys decided to do a lyric video for a song with such an iconic and brilliant video.
Also do Baggy Trousers next.
This song has such a warm, nostalgic place in my heart. I had just graduated high school the year before and life seemed boundless. The music is great as well as the sentiment.
Madness truly are an English iconic band. Performing this song in particular for the queen on the roof of Buckingham palace says how much the country adore them
The members of Madness formed in Camden Town (or just Camden) a Borough of London in 1976. Six of the original seven still perform together.
A must hear from Madness is "House of Fun" - more uptempo and fun for Jay, more sax for Amber.
Also, you should give the band Squeeze a try... start with the song "Hourglass" from their album Babylon And On.
That’s the style of Madness. Think you’ll find Suggs, the lead singer, has the same approach to most their songs. I understand why lyrics would be helpful but you really need to see the official videos Madness did to accompany their songs.
Totally agree about the videos. The singles audio and video were inseparable.
So good, thank you for this reaction. Nostalgia from my high school time..such a great time in my life listening to Madness in the radio.
The lead singer is called suggs the King of cool. They are British a ska band from North London, primary Camden Town.
'Embarrassment' - go on, that's the best Madness song of all time!
Another great "slice of life" story song with great lyrics and music is "Come Dancing" by The Kinks.
LOVE this song! They should definately watch the video version, too!
For something wilder, try their "One Step Beyond", Madness are an English ska band from Camden Town, North London, who formed in 1976
You need to watch Madness performing on the roof of the Queen's Palace. That was awesome. They even showed the party going on inside.
You guys are great! Love you dig the new wave stuff!
This came out when I was a teen and we were the house in the middle of the street, where we all hung out. I love this song and band. Ska is so awesome.
My personal favorite from them is 'Embarassment' and then you can really hear the lead singer's /frontman's vocal talents, Jay!😉
Perfect description of this song!
MADNESS!!! You have to be a Brit to get them instantly, but dig deeper. Great band ,great songs, you got to have the visuals with this band too.
➕ solo Suggs track Cecillia
vote for Last Boat to Cairo!
I was blessed to see Madness in concert they are so good they opened up for the band The Police, Thompson twins, Devo.. it was during an MTV first USA tour in the 80s.. and it started in Arizona
This was the song of my childhood and I love it to peices xD
The song has more depth than the first listen. Just one line in the background changes the feel of the song - "Something tells you that you've got to move away from it." Even though it describes the idyllic suburban life, there's still the anxiety and the yearning to move away.
This is a wonderful song!!
Oh no, the video is SO much fun! Totally British silliness, a must!!!
For Female Friday:
Ronnie Spector - ‘Be My Baby’
Bette Midler - ‘From a Distance’
Toni Braxton - ‘Un-Break My Heart’
Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’
Other notables:
Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing,’
Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You,’
Kool and The Gang - ‘Celebration,’
Dan Fogelberg - ‘Same Old Lang Syne’
Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father’
Our House is one of the most popular songs in the UK. Another super popular UK song you really need to listen to is 'Dirty Old Town' by 'The Pogues'. Absolutely awesome song!
Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks would fit well in that playlist.
"Sing it to me." - wait until you hear about rap!
If you want more Madness, "One Step Beyond"
Every time I hear this song, I immediately have to follow it up with The Kinks "Come Dancing" as far as painting a picture songs. Describing a childhood memory or memories so well is a great journey to go on.
God bless you for covering this song. Never thought anyone would listen to this amazing song and it’s meaning
You should also check out “It Must Be Love” by Madness as well. I just love Madness. ❤️
If you want hard hitting Madness, go for “One Step Beyond”, Medium Madness = “House of Fun”, Slow meaningful Madness = “It must be Love”. Also, check out FISHBONE “Party at Ground Zone”. The Best!!
To really appreciate this song, you need to watch the official video. Their zany antics are classic
I would never miss a video if yall never posted boring ones. This one is good, so I clicked it. That's how I function.
Well, boring IS subjective, sooo......
@@PhoenixRisen63 I'm not obligated to subject myself to it.
Give "It Must Be Love" by these a try. I think J will like that better. Ohhhhh. I almost forgot! Here's another one. It's a "banger". "One Step Beyond" ❤🎼
Brilliant.
"He's just sayin his words in a very nice way..i love that..🎶🤗😍🤗🎶
hey guys, saw madness perform live last year, they all grew up together and the band has been together since the late 70s.they are awesome live, packed out venues every time they play.amazing band and great live.love your channel, keep up the good work
I've been waiting for you to do this one. This is such a fun song, and so very much the 80's. Misadvised The video for this was a must see. Jordan if you saw the video you would enjoy it much more.
Plus as he said the lyrics were not sung so they did not need the lyric video to pick up on them
Totally agree if they need lyrics that's what the captions are for.
This is actually a type of singing that a lot of artists do!
Everyone has already suggested some of the best Madness songs to check out, so I would also suggest some of the groups from the same scene: The Specials, the Selector or even Bad Manners.
It's a British classic people from the 80s. Listen again you will love it 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Loved Madness as a kid something just grabbed me with baggy trousers love everything about them, musicians are fab too the sounds are well played and produced 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
