'Boney M' were a massive band during the Disco era in the U.K. and Europe, they had loads of hits: "Daddy Cool", "Ma Baker", "Night Flight to Venus", "Sunny", "Rivers of Babylon", "Belfast", "Painter Man", "Gotta Go Home", "Mary's Boy Child/Oh, My Lord", "Brown Girl in The Ring", etc.
I'm from Belfast, hearing that song is never not weird.

A number of their hits were actually covers. The original version of “River Of Babylon” is definitely worth a listen.

The single was "Rivers Of Babylon/ Brown Girl In The Ring" and the 2 sides spent a combined total of 19 weeks in the UK charts, five at number one.
To be honest, "Rivers of Babylon" was the only Boney M song I'd ever heard before this because the lyrics are mostly taken directly from two psalms (19 and 137 if I recall correctly).
Nowadays we would say it went viral! THE song of the late 1970ies disco era in Germany!
I always feel that the three girls told their mum "Hey, we are going to form a band." and mum replies "Ok, but take your little brother with you!" Lol!

Rasputin, aka The Mad Monk. He was a confidante of the Tsarina because he claimed to be able to treat the heir’s hemophilia. He was a notorious lady’s man and was making his way through the ladies of the Court. He had enormous sway with the Tsarina and, through her, the Tsar. A collection of lords and aristocrats got together and invited Rasputin to a party. They poisoned the wine but nothing happened when he drank it. They proceeded to beat, stab and shoot him multiple times but he was still alive. Finally, they dumped his body into the frozen River. The next day, when he was fished out of the river, it was discovered that he drowned! This was in Moscow, Russia around 1913-17. I can’t remember.
I'd add to that, that it was during the Russian Revolution AND WWI. Germany encouraged the Russian Revolution, by shipping Lenin back to Moscow to foment trouble. The aim was to knock Russia OUT of the war. There was already plenty of factors contributing to the Russian Revolution, but yeah Rasputin and his control over the Tsarina was one of them. As a pop tune based on an actual person, and actual events, it's pretty faithful, and damn catchy.
Bobby Farrell died in 2010. It was on the same day of the year and same city as Rasputin.
Most of that is mythological spin. Douglas Smith's 2016 book "Rasputin" is probably the leading, in English at least, authority on the life of Rasputin. The book is a massive 850 pages and 74 chapters. After reading it, for years I would alternate between listening to the audio version of that book and an Eddie Rickenbacker book while I fell asleep.
Regardless, everything about Rasputin and the Romanov's story is creepy. From Rasputin's pervert nature, the fact that there was a French charlatan (Nizier Philippe) before Rasputin, the fact that Rasputin was popular among the Russian elite as a sort of novelty item, his battle for power with real Russian monks, his ability to gain imperial influence by mysteriously controlling Alexei's hemophilia, the fact that Nicholas II was such a pushover that Rasputin was able to heavily influence his decisions through his wife, the fact that even though Nicholas was such a weak leader he seemed to be truly in love with his wife, to the last haunting chapter of the Romanov family when the communists march them down to the basement where they are slaughtered and never seen again. It all reads like a twisted fairy tale.
He died in December of 1916. In addition to all the above they also crushed his head with a heavy stone. And yes, the cause of death was drowning. The 3 Counts who killed him did so because his bad influence on the Tsar & Tsarina was seriously undermining their legitimacy. He was thought of as one of the final straws that broke the back of the Romanov dynasty, which collapsed a couple of months later.
He was slandered by loud voices and now people who know little about him choose to accept that slander as 'history'.
Sadly Bobby Farrell passed away in 2010 in St Petersburg, Russia of all places. He died on the same date and same city as Rasputin.
"Rivers of Babylon" and "Mary's Boy child" were some of the very rare songs that every single generation of my family would enjoy together.

Their Christmas album is one the very best! Their version of "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" was all over the radio during the 80's and 90's! That song is definitely worth a reaction, you'll love it!!

When I was a kid (in the UK), my dad used to call me Rasputin when I got up to no good. He was basically a rogue and a philanderer among Russian society.
This song is from 1978/9. Growing up in Germany, I was aware of and listened to Boney M. They are the BOMB! Most folk here in the US are late to the fight re: Boney M., and it's good they're finally getting to get acquainted with them!
Boney M is not German but they were formed and produced by a German. The members were all from Caribbean Islands (Jamaica, Monserrat, and Aruba). Boney M was the first lip sync group formed by Frank Farian who later formed Milli Vanilli. Nobody had a problem with them because 1) it was not a secret 2) there were a number of lip sync groups in the disco era and 3) a couple of the women sang on the tracks they lip synced to. Farian did most of the vocals for Bobby Farrell who had been an exotic dancer in Aruba and was hired to dance, not sing. Farian tried the same thing with Milli Vanilli but forgot to let the world know they did not do the singing so the whole thing imploded.
The Milli Vanilli thing imploded the moment they gave them a Grammy without knowing about the lip-syncing. Otherwise I'm sure it wouldn't have been a deal as big as it was.

UK here. Born in 1971. They were massive in UK. Just one of the incredible soundtracks to my single number years. I guarantee you are going to love Boney M. They were a manufactured group, but the tunes they did are some of the most funny, fun, frivolous, funky, dancey, get yo' ass on the dance floor tracks that will stay with you forever! Every UK person lights up when Boney M kicks in :D

What do you mean they were a manufactured group? You are looking for criticism. Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barret sang on all their hits numbers. Both in the studio and in live performances. The facts the ladies didn't write the songs doesn't mean that they were manufactured. Celine Dion doesn't write songs and has covered every minor and major songs done by other artistes to build her career and I still hear people praising her, calling her goddess of music. I don't hate Celine but she is over rated but unlike you i won't put her down in public by calling her manufactured. After all like the BoneyM girls, she can hold her notes in studio and outside.
@@Train-mo2rj it wasn't meant as negatively as you took it. I accept what you are saying. In my experience they are often referred to as a manufactured group. That isn't necessarily a criticism. Spice girls were the Monkees were and they were brilliant. Many are manufactured in that individual talents are brought together by another entity. Takes nothing away from their individual talent.

Liz Mitchell sang all the songs she might have lip-synched over. Does that make her not a singer? Michael Jackson did a lip-synch on the Billie Jean 25th motown anniversary performance. Does that mean he was manufactured?
I'm irritated when I see people who don't give these two ladies in BoneyM their due credits for singing on all their BoneyM records and albums. People with their unsolicited too much information are the first to say ah... they are manufactured. ... ah.... they were lip synching group, ah... they were from Jamaica not from Germany or Britain as if Jamaicans can't rise to the top in music industry. Their producer Frank Friana is the devil. Hs controlled and exploited Liz and Marcia that after the band broke up he stopped giving them royalties. Shamelessly feeding himself out of the sweat of 2 black incredible singers in their youths and heyday. He controlled Eruption band, all members were black, he controlled Milli Vanilli, 2 black guys. He would tell the press, oh... I didn't allow those guys to sing on the albums because their voices were not good whereas he is doing all that to keep the money all to himself and pay them pittance. If someone's image is going to sell your products, it's expected that they will be well enumerated. That German producer is nothing but a modern day black slave master.

I'm glad someone mentioned their OTHER hits... They really were BIG around the world and especially here in the UK. But I also see others from Australia, Canada, Germany etc. saying how much they were 'into' Boney 'M'. Any DJ who wanted to get people up to dance, just popped a 'BM' on the turntable and knew it would be an instant 'floor filler'. 😃
Daddy Cool and Rivers of Babylon are other great tracks from Boney M! This is my favourite though. The production of the strings is very good with the disco beats.

Dudes! Boney M rule! While America was organising "disco sucks" events, in Europe the war was over already, and the winners were singing Brown Girl In The Ring and Mary's Boy Child. The legwork in this is based on Russian dancing, which soldiers would do, and the stamina required is beyond insane. From floor to upright and back every beat. We all tried it as kids. We all failed.

Brown Girl in the Ring is one of Boney M's best, along with Rivers of Babylon.
We Liverpool fans in the 1970s used this Boney M tune and sang " We are Liverpool tra,la la la la,the best football team in the land yes we are! " in reference to their hit song " Brown Girl "

I seem to remember that those songs were part of a double A side single, as they were, generally, played together at discos.
It is amazing that you found this! Boney M was never really big in the U.S.A. But anyone who was in Europe in the late 70's -early 80's knows them. They were played in all the discos then. They have a lot of great songs and a very strange history to the band itself.

I was barely a teen but Rasputin and By the Rivers of Babylon were played at school dances. I assume it was in the clubs here as well.

When you get closer to Christmas you really need to react to their version of "Mary's Boy Child". It is a great version of a calypso Christmas Carol first released by Harry Belafonte in the 1950's.

Disco music at its best. I think some people tend to forget how awesome the 70s were. That decade saw the rise of soul to the mainstream, it had disco and funk, the evolution of the different branches of rock & roll, great folk singers songwriters, the birth of modern pop music and even early forms of hip hop towards the tail end of the decade. It's a very underrated decade in terms of music.
Very musically underrated. "Nightflight to Venus" is an incredible album, start to finish.
It trails off and directly flows into the start of Rasputin.
But weren't they a fake group like Millie Vinelli?

I was sitting in a bar in Mombasa, Kenya back in Feb. 77' & heard "Daddy Cool" for the first & only time until 2020 thanks to you tube. That song stuck in my head my whole life. I was drinking a Tuskers beer with an elephant on the label.

The fact that the back up singers actually sang their vocals (even if they sometimes lip synced to a backing track of their own vocals). Also Frank Fabian didn’t write or arrange their biggest hits might also be part of it. The group had a complicated history.
Rasputin is about the the true story of the Russian Royal family who not long before the 1st world war were all shot dead in the Russian Revolution. Their son was a hemopilliac meaning his blood didn't clot and if he started bleeding he could die. Rasputin was this very strange guy who was kind of like a preacher. He used to have loads of women in the court come to hear what he had to say. The Russian tsarina(Queen) was a big fan and beleived him when he said he was like a kind of faith healer and could help her son. He really couldn't help him but went along with it probably for the money. As she was seeing so much of him they felt she was having an affair so they wanted him dead. They put poison in his wine. But he was a strong guy and it didn't kill him. So in the end they shot him. And this song is one that every time I hear it it's stuck in my head for a few days as it's so catchy.
They were killed in July 1918, months before the END of the Great War in November of 1918.
Most probably killed by British intelligence in order to stop him from promoting the end to Russia's involvement in Wwi.

Boney M. was a disco band produced by Frank Farian that had international success, especially in the 1970s, with songs such as Daddy Cool, Rivers of Babylon and Ma Baker. Boney M. has sold over 150 million records worldwide, including more than 60 million singles. If I'm not mistaken, the contract with the group was limited to a certain period of time. If I'm not mistaken, after the group dissolved, they tried to found a new one, but that was banned because of copyright.

The "back-up singers" were the real singers and from England/ Netherlands Germany. The producer was also a German,
Frank Farian. The dancer didn't use his own voice. HIs name was Bobby Farrell and after his career he lived in the Netherlands. I remember when we were young we really thought he could dance :- ) They had some gigantic hits.

I think this was filmed at the Sopot Music Festival in Poland. At the time Poland was communist and the USSR had a lot of influence over the government. I think this song was banned in Poland and the USSR wasn't keen on it being broadcast. If that was the case, the band and the organisers had a lot of guts.

OMG! YES! I havent heard this in ages. My parents had a Boney M Christmas cassett in the car every year around the holidays and we sang the heck out of those songs for at least two solid months of the year lol. But by far our favourite car ride song when on our way to visit family or what have you, was THIS song, Rasputin. Your reactions were HILARIOUS! Amber getting into it at about the 2:15 mark as the bass came through was gold! I will say you cut it a tiny bit short and didnt get to hear the "oh those Russians!" exclaimation at the end lol. That was always our favourite part as kids and we'd all just be waiting to say it the whole song 😅

From the same man that gave the world Milli Vanilli. Whilst the guy dancing around sang live, anything mined was to the studio recording and the male vocal is Frank Farian (the mastermind behind the scenes) - and most of the female vocals are the main singer, Liz Mitchell.

Whenever I hear this song, I just think about those lazy days of the 70's when I was a kid. This song could be heard on the radio. Not "too" disco but just enough to remind us of the era. I saw Boney M last year and i will tell you that Liz Mitchell still has it. My brother bought the album Night flight to venus and really got into the band
Boney M's music was musically multilayred and deep despite the "Fun" Disco format. Listening to them on headphones is a real treat.

The Dancer Bobby Farrell never sang on the groups records, he was there just to dance, Frank Farian sang the male parts. Bobby Farrell died in 2010 of heart failure, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the same city as Rasputin and on the same date 30th December.
First time I heard this song was in college during a just dance session on the Nintendo Wii. One of my class mates scored a perfect to this song.

Of any song I've ever heard this song tells the story better than any other song about history.. It's historically accurate while being a bouncy tune. Rasputin is a very interesting historical figure. He held a lot of sway just before or around the time of the Russian Revolution.
