As other people have said Abba Won The Eurovision Song Contest with THIS song and the rest as they say is History
And yet it so nearly didn’t happen. The original Swedish entry was dropped after getting into legal troubles and the Swedish network approached ABBA to fill in; having failed to make the cut the previous year, and feeling pretty unhappy about it, they were initially reluctant, but their record company “persuaded” them to go for it.
@@ythomitnellum Karma at it's best!
Love abba
i was just going to mention that they won the Eurovision song contest.
@@susannehouse3857I'm not sure what level they were up to at the time but I know RTE were the associated broadcaster for Eire in that list of one for each competing country (BBC for the UK,RAI for Italy, etc.) that always appeared in the closing credits of each episode of Jeux Sans Frontieres.
Waterloo is 50 years old this year, and it still sounds as fresh as when it was released! Timeless!
Amber, you've got to listen to ABBA's Dancing Queen next. It's probably their biggest hit and it'll be your new favorite. guaranteed.
Dancing Queen is a masterpiece
I actually had to go back and look to make sure they hadn’t done it! I can’t believe it!! They haven’t done Dancing Queen!! 😳Ok Amber, let’s get it! You are really gonna love it!
Yeah c’mon Amber. It is time for Dancing Queen. An incredible song. You will love it!
@@Don-n6oI second (or third) this emotion. A must.
No ABBA overview is complete without the Dancing Queen!
Guys, THIS is the song that launched Abba onto the world stage. They won the Eurovision Song Contest with this: Brighton, UK 1974 (hence the glam rock outfits) and the rest is (Napoleonic) history!
I was just about to say the same thing. This is THE song from ABBA for me.
Back in the day all the music at Eurovision was played by the same orchestra with each act supplying their own conductor; ABBA’s came on dressed up as full Napoleon and brought the house down with a mixture of laughter and cheers. With hindsight I’d love to know what score they got from France 😂
Who else clicked on this immediately?
Yes...
The first record I bought as a kid
I click on every Rob Squad video immediately. This is gonna be an interesting one
👋🏻
Oh yeah 💕
This song is what launched ABBA into the stratosphere, and on to become one of the best selling pop groups ever selling close to 200 million albums worldwide.
Umm more like 400 Million! Only the Beatles have sold more!
"Waterloo" was a Eurovision Song Contest winner.
450
In the early '70s, very few musical groups were making videos for their songs. Benny and Bjorn figured out early that music TV shows would play these clips and promote their songs. Since ABBA was an international group, these clips were played all around the world and helped make the band even bigger. It was a brilliant move, since was a whole decade before MTV.
Absolutely. Benny and Bjorn are innovators. They have even pioneered one of the first virtual concerts.
@@Spo-Dee-O-DeeThe Beatles made their REAL MV in 1965, sooooo...
Bob Dylan did a film clip of his song "Subterranean Homesick Blues" in 1965.
These guys are amazing, in the Swedish competition of Eurovision they sang this song in swedish, when they went to the Finals they knew they needed to sing in English to have a chance of winning.
Millions of people across the World were introduced to ABBA with "Waterloo", their first big Hit, pretty much launched their career, followed by "Honey, Honey" and "SOS"..
Great song but you must listen to Dancing Queen next! It will easily become your favorite ABBA song!😊
Agreed. Totally.
And I love their TIGER
@@RabbiSteve I disagree. They had better things out than Dancing Queen, good as it was. The Name Of The Game comes to mind. SOS is another. Slipping Through My Fingers, yet another.
You just can’t feel bad while listening to ABBA, it’s impossible! They’re audio serotonin🥰🥰🥰
Guys, Luca just gets cuter all the time! His little wave at the end! 🥹
"Waterloo", ABBA's international breakthrough, but you still have their biggest hit to react to; "Dancing Queen"...
Wow how have they not watched that one yet!?!?
I doubt they will react to Dancing Queen as I heard Amber say in a video ages ago that 'everyone knows Dancing Queen' so I think that was the only Abba song they knew & heard previously so therefore can't react as a first time hearing unless they haven't seen the video & could react to that. Must say I was disappointed when I realised. I hope they react to the video so we still see a reaction even if it isn't the first time they heard it. Loved Luca's appearance today to, so adorable.
I think they’re saving that one for a special occasion.
@@Marianne_321 I don't think she's an expert on who know what song by them.
@@MIKECNW I never said she was an expert. Just that with Abba, Dancing Queen seems to be the groups best known & most popular track with the public & judging by Amber saying that 'everyone knows Dancing Queen' beforehand (when they reacted to another video). that it could be the one track they already knew from Abba before reacting to other tracks which they didn't know.
People constantly ask Amber & Jay in comments whenever they do an Abba track to react to Dancing Queen & they haven't so far & I suggested it could be because they already know it so can't give a genuine first reaction of the song. However while (possibly) knowing the song they may not have seen the Dancing Queen video, so could react to that & in this way it would still make many who want to see their reaction to that song happy.
My wife drove me crazy with Abba for so long, and being a rocker since the 60s, I certainly wasn't on board with Abba! It really didn't matter to her, she'd just tell me to go to my 'Man Cave' if I didn't want to hear it! And she was right. Lord knows I drove her crazy with my rock. Sadly, I lost her to cancer three years ago, and I must admit, Abba never sounded so good as this reaction. Thank you for reacting to this song (which was one of her favorites), and giving me a little time spent with my wife again.
My condolences on the passing of your bride. I'm sure she watched down on you with a smile when you tuned in to this reaction. As others have mentioned, this was THE song that had me hooked on this band, from Waterloo to Voyage...
I always think of the film Muriel's Wedding when I hear this song. I think you would really like the film, they pay a fun tribute to ABBA and it's just a movie full of feels . Funny, and sweet.
I never heard of the movie, but I have seen Mamma Mia! which also is a tribute movie sketched around their songs.
I totally agree- great movie! I also mentioned it in my comment. I’d love if they reacted to it!
@@CabinFever52try to watch it if you can! Lots of ABBA songs and a really good movie.
Love Toni Collete and Rachel Davis performance of "Waterloo" in the movie.. it's Classic.
@@4tuneagent Rachel Griffiths and yes it's a fantastic movie! I hope they react to it in their movie channel
❤ ABBA is fantastic! Can’t help picturing the scene in Muriel’s Wedding where this song features prominently…. Great movie! Check out Name of the Game next.
Yes!!!! Another movie night
I was just thinking I need to watch that movie!
Moma Mia, too ... at the end with the main characters ... seeing Colin firth in platforms 😅😂
Yes. Love that scene and love the whole movie. Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths were fantastic in that movie, and the whole cast was stellar. Abba music features prominently in the movie as well.
NAME OF THE GAME !!! yes !!!
This brings back childhood memories, The UK was hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, and for the first time, I was allowed to stay up late to watch the entire annual Eurovision Song Contest. The rules of the contest at the time the performers whether solo or a group/band had to perform with a full orchestra. So ABBA
had their Swedish conductor dressed as Napoleon, i remember the excitement as the International juries votes came in. ABBA won the contest for Sweden, launching the group on the International stage.
I'd forgotten that about the conductor!!
When you have done about 10 more ABBA songs you have to watch Mamma Mia. I love the versions of Abba in those Movies. Luca made me smile today and probably way more of us viewers.
"Waterloo" (1974) is one of my favorites, and is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs
(with S.O.S. , Dancing Queen, The winner takes it all & Don't shut me down)
and I think that is the song that change history,
not only for ABBA, for Sweden and Eurovision too
"Waterloo" was the song that ABBA wrote especially to participate
in the annual Eurovision Song Contest
By the rules of the competition the songs could not exceed 3 minutes (that its 2:46)
and ABBA made a masterpiece!
ABBA sing it in Swedish, for the local selection in Sweden (February 1974)
and finally ABBA sing it in English in the final held in England (April 1974)
before 16 interpreters and songs from all over Europe.
"Waterloo" and ABBA win Eurovision for the first time for Sweden
It will be Their first big worldwide hit: #1 in UK and half Europe (also South Africa),
and Top 10 in U.S., Canada, Australia , New Zealand and the rest of Europe
ABBA recording "Waterloo" in
swedish, english, german and french
Several years later, in 2005, to the 50th Eurovision anniversary,
"Waterloo" was chosen as the Best Song in all the history of Eurovisión
i hope you have a nice week
Kind regards from
Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷
South América
Three minutes of pure ecstasy.
I was waiting for this! It is just so fun right out of the gate! And this is the one that blasted ABBA into fame, winning the 1974 Eurovision contest with it!
And since y’all are ABBA fans, you definitely should do Muriel’s Wedding for the movie channel! They are basically the whole soundtrack!
Yes! Film Friday or Movie Monday - Muriel’s Wedding, but not until they’ve reacted to Dancing Queen first.
Definitely!! Love Muriel's Wedding
Their two live performances of this when they won Eurovision are actually better than this original studio recording you reacted to.
True. Those just blew everyone away. No other group could match ABBA at Eurovision '74.
@@The_Jupiter2_Mission Are not what?
No, they are not better than the studio version. Not by a long shot.
I keep pushing for Slipping Through My Fingers, a wonderfully moody song from their last album. A song I love!
That's the trouble with ABBA. You name a song you want but there are 10 others just as good that others have listed.
I agree. Slipping Through My Fingers is an emotional song and highly underrated. Beautiful.
Yes I keep asking for it too! A different Abba, beautiful song.
I can’t believe they haven’t done this one already!
You need to watch “Muriel’s Wedding”. Jam packed with ABBA songs and there’s a scene with Waterloo and it’s hilarious.
Pop-wise, it really doesn't get much better than ABBA...legendary and for a reason.
I'm always thrilled to see an ABBA reaction
Dancing Queen needs to be next.
Their winning song from the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton, England which hailed their dominance of years to come. Song writing and harmonies are out of the world and they’re still going strong with their Voyage show in London
...and the UK didn't award them a single point.
Eurovision Song Contest was never really the same after this tune! I was a kid but it's still so clear in memory. They still did all live with full orchestra - Swedish conducor was dressed a Napoleon. Amazing show. =) #lottalove
Shouldn't be too hard to reach 500,000 because you guys are very pleasant fun people.
This is where it all started for me, can you believe this is 50 years old ! Ive been obsessed with them ever since. The greatest group of all time
OMG! Whenever I hear this song, I think of the movie "Muriel's Wedding", a MUST SEE!!
Yes!!! Muriel’s Wedding is amazing! 🎉
50 Years ago on November 12 1973 AB BA first charted here in Australia with Ring Ring AS Benny Bjorn Anna and Agnetha
This song has one of my favorite song lyrics of all time: "The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself." Grew up listening to ABBA and still love them so much.
Now you know why so many of us were requesting this one. Waterloo introduced Abba to the world. It was so catchy and all over pop radio. Honey Honey would be a good one to do next and maybe their biggest song Dancing Queen.
It is hard to believe that they haven't gotten to Dancing Queen. This was their 13th reaction to an ABBA song (plus they've done Frida's "I Know There's Something Going On"). It will be an interesting reaction when they finally do ABBA's only number #1 in the U.S.
or "one of us"
The first time anyone in the US heard of Abba was this song, the one that launched their fabulous career!
Always nice when Luca makes an appearance.
The 2 very strong female vocalists have a unique, sort of natural chorus created when they sing in unison. I'll always remember ABBA for that. That and a slew of big hit songs. Considering English is their 2nd language, this song in particular is quite a lyrical feat.
Waterloo was actually their second album in 1974. The year before they released their first album "Ring Ring", you should react to the title song "Ring, Ring".
Back in uk so 1am here but still plugging for that Slade track, merry Christmas Everybody is right up your street guys 🙏
This is one of the signature songs of one of the 70s signature groups
Yes also their first hit song
When they re-did this in "Muriel's Wedding" (movie) I LOVED iT.
Fantastic movie.
Me too! One of my favourite scenes!
You should watch the movie Muriel’s Wedding about who wishes her life would be like an Abba song. Funny movie and lots of Abba music.
Benny and Bjorn were and still are master song writers and Agneta and Anni Frid were beautiful beyond belief , with voices that could shame a a flock of nightingales . Another great song of theirs is So Long ( see you honey ) , which doesnt get the recognition for how good it actually is . A bit of history about ABBA is that it wasnt the first time ABBA tried to enter Eurovision. In Sweden they have what is called " Melodifestivalan", where the people of Sweden pick the act they want to represent Sweden at Eurovision. In 1973 ABBA entered Melodifestivalen with the song Ring Ring and finished in 3rd place with just 8 points and 29 points behind the eventual winner. Then we all know what happened the next year, ABBA won the competition with a staggering 302 points , 89 points ahead of the 2nd placed artist
Waterloo is my favorite ABBA song!!!
Abba was my mom's fave band when I was little, so I grew up with all their songs. I remember when she went to see them in concert, she was so excited. When she passed away, I watched Mama Mia almost everyday for a month. The music made me feel close to her and really helped with my grief. xxx
Just to note - yesterday was the 50th anniversary of them doing this in English and winning the Eurovision Song Contest, which put them on the map.
Has anyone else checked out their new album? They may be older, but the talent is still there
One of the songs is actually
previously unreleased, but written
& recorded back in the '70s.
I downloaded it from iTunes the day it was released!!
I watched the launch event live at 1.30am my time, tears of joy in my eyes. Finished a full box of tissues that night while the wife and kids slept.
When this CRASHED out on the AM radio waves in the Summer of 1974, I knew we were meeting up with a band who would take the world by storm.
I love the song. THANK YOU. Wish you could react to the Movie Muriel's Wedding -- Waterloo was huge in that GREAT MOVIE from AUSTRALIA
ABBA cracked the cheat code. Like, EVERYBODY, loves ABBA. How could you not? Every song is so catchy. 🥰
Ah, the song where it all began...As an avid ESC viewer, there will always be certain acts/songs that stand out over the years and Waterloo is one of them.
ESC is just a political shitshow now though :(, it used to be good.
It began for ABBA earlier than 1974. Check out People Need Love, 1972.
@@erroristmusic Too true. It's a shame though, especially given the whole reason the ESC started was to bring people together with music and it seems to be becoming less and less about the music with each passing year.
I like to do a "blind" listening to the songs prior to the competition if I can (since most songs are released ahead of time), I pop them into a playlist, set it to shuffle and don't look at the names of the artist/song/country...etc. I just assign each a number, rate the songs and check to see who did what afterwards. It's really interesting, as even if they do sing in their "native" language it's not necessarily always obvious who sang what (i.e. French is common to several countries and a song can be sung in any language really, regardless of which country the representing singer is from).
@@keithbrown7685 I'm not saying that they didn't do anything before Waterloo, but "Waterloo" is definitely the start of what shot them into international stardom.
ABBA had the best melodies ever. Even my hard rock buddies agreed. And those lead singers....'nuff said.
His sweeping keyboards, the build up is always prominenet in most songs - he was the genius behind the band
There are too many amazing ABBA songs to space out.
ABBA and ELO were (and still are) my favorite rock groups back in the 70's! Both of them had nothing but great songs! And completely original!
Was 14 yrs old 74' ..watching Amer Bandstand- they did some shows on Malibu Beach, Waterloo starts playin,Bandstand kids playin frisbee& dancin..I was like,- " Man ,in a few more years !!" 😁🌴🌞
I just watched The Martian (a movie which you guys should react to if you haven’t seen it yet) that this song is part of the soundtrack in the movie. Pretty good song. It doesn’t suck.
I've wondered if they picked that song because the University of Waterloo is one of Canada's premiere engineering schools (although in the book it's Beatles tracks that were left behind by one of his crewmates).
Slipping through my Fingers! Must listen to as a parent!
If you're going to listen to ABBA, you've got to listen to their greatest hit "Dancing Queen". Perfection!!
I love the aggressive piano riffs that some of the best ABBA songs have. It really sets their music apart from their contemporaries.
Abba songs never seem to age probably the best group ever their music has stood the test of time you never get tired of hearing a Abba song, as for Abba voyage wow what a show absolutely fantastic it's got to be on everyone's bucket list.
As are so many of their tunes, this song is melodic, harmon ic and it is just pure joy. ABBA rules.
If you love ABBA you should check out movie Muriel’s Wedding. Soundtrack full of songs and the film pays great homage to music!
Luca made me smile today!
This song started it all!! Absolutely love this band!!🤘🔥
Introducing the children to ABBA! That is what great parenting is all about!
Have you watched the musical Mama Mia with Meryl Streep? The movie incorporates many of the ABBA songs. I think you guys would love it if you haven’t already seen it. One of my favorites!
And the version of Waterloo in the end credits is hysterically cheesy and funny.
It was a piece of tripe. The ABBA soundtrack is the only thing it had to recommend it.
So many people clamoring for the mediocre and the overrated.
@@keithbrown7685 I thought it was cute. Most musicals are tripe, but some are still cute.
This is first song I ever heard from Abba, in the summer of '74 while I was stationed in coastal NC with the USMC. Great song by a great group!
"I've been waiting 25 years for this moment..."
(Presses 'play.' Ride of the Valkyries begins to play before being interrupted by Waterloo playing)
"I'm sorry sir. I must have taped over that."
I was 9 years old when ABBA won the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson with Waterloo and their music grabbed me and hasn't let me go to this day.
The style of their music is unique. They can be fast and powerful but also slow like with Eagle, which is a slower track, and this changeability was always what set them apart and you could always tell in the music what mood they were in when writing and composing .Abba were unique, something like that will no longer exist and that's why their music will accompany us for a very long time and inspire other artists.
greetings from Germany🎧
YES!!! Finally! My favorite ABBA song!!! Luca is too adorable!!!
This is EVERYTHING. I remember them winning, I've seen the outfits in exhibitions in Stockholm and London, how does one song never get old?!
Thank you, I've been suggesting this one for decades! Well....for a while. This was the song that first put them on the map. I'd like to suggest I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do by ABBA!
I love that their clothes in this video - probably made several years after their Eurovision win - were the costumes they wore at Eurovision when they famously sang “Waterloo” (and blew everyone’s doors off! 🤩🤩🤩
Only like a few of their songs, but "Waterloo" is so good it justifies their legend.
Amber, I love hearing your takes on songs because you usually get it and convey in such a relatable way.
Please please please, for movie night- MURIEL'S WEDDING; it's full of Abba music and about a young woman who's at a transitional time in her development, who lives by what Abba music says. It's a mid 80's film and it's Toni Collette's debut and she kills it as Muriel. It's a beautiful and perfect independent, small budget, film that won many Awards in Australia. Please enjoy it some evening.
and the Waterloo scene is a classic 🙂
agree 100%
This is one of those "Wow, they haven't done this yet?" songs. A *foundational* track.
This was ABBA's breakout hit that made them worldwide superstars. In 1974 I was living in Waterloo Belgium, and after they won the Eurovision Song Contest they visited the town to give a sort of thank you for the inspiration.
One of the first 45s I ever bought. So much love for this tune. 💜💜💜
This has always been my favorite Abba song.
Watch the movie ‘Mama Mia’ based on the hit Broadway musical featuring all Abba music!
The last song they recorded together, The Day Before You Came, I love it. It's sort of different to most of their usual stuff but very haunting. I feel that it is a fitting end to their time together.
Hey guys! I love, love, love this ABBA song. I clicked the vid immediately, and seconds later, I was bouncing around, dancing in my kitchen in the *best* mood. Thanx so much for your reaction. So glad to hear you guys loved this song, too. Peace out. ☮️
I remember watching this on TV in the U.K, I was 12 and we watched as a family. We didn’t care that we lost to this great song ❤
I love this song but I have to admit that every time I hear it, my mind goes right to the scene in "Muriel's Wedding" when Muriel and Rhonda dance to this song. "Mamma Mia" wasn't the only movie, though technically a live musical first, that had an ABBA soundtrack prevalent in the movie. Such a fun and clever song. Definitely worthy of the win at Eurovision. 😎👍
Yeah, although the fight made it more memorable.
One of the ultimate Eurovision songs. It was putting the band up to the stratosphere where they stayed for the rest of the decade. The LP was btw very diverse with every style there was around, even hard rock.
I feel old today. Saw KISS in 76. Lets go Rob Squad. Love you guys
One of the few bands where the greatest hits albums are actually real greatest hits.
You should watch the movie "Muriels Wedding" with Toni Collette! It's filled with ABBA❤
Love that ABBA is from their initials - Anni-frid, Benny, Björn and Agnetha. Always love this group!! ❤
One day a good movie reaction for you would be 'Muriel's Wedding' from 1994, an Australian film which was Toni Collette's first film. The soundtrack is full of ABBA songs.
So...connection to a film you can watch....Muriel's Wedding has this song in it and it's my favorite part (a lot of the film has ABBA music throughout...you'd get a kick out of it)
"Dancing Queen" please even though "Waterloo" is a terrific choice. I also highly recommend reacting to "Muriel's Wedding" on your movie channel which has an incredible Abba soundtrack I know you guys would enjoy. Keep up the good work!! Also Luka is adorable and is growing up so fast!!!
Every ABBA songs are my favourite, love them so much.
Have you guys watched the Australian movie 'Muriel's Wedding'? I think you'd love it. This song features prominently.
"Bang A-Boomerang" is my favorite ABBA song. It's not one of their biggest hits, but it has a similar explosive energy as Waterloo and features one memorable hook after another.
Nothing is going to top “Money, Money, Money”? You haven’t heard “Dancing Queen” yet!😊
Dancing Queen is the ABBA song that put more people to dance at the discos than any other.
My fav Abba song, i was 12 when they won the euro song contest with this. Sandra.
I love all of ABBA songs, but Jay and Amber, you must be saving the best for the last with Dancing Queen is by far the best ABBA song in my opinion.
Heard Amber say 'everyone knows Dancing Queen' on one of their video's ages ago. So it appears it's one they heard outside of this channel previously. I think it's the only Abba track they heard before. I'm hoping they cover 'Thankyou for the music ' next or 'I do, I do, I do, I do, I do'
I love their reactions!
Love seeing your big smiles on this fun song.
