This song is based on a true story. Eileen was a girl Kevin Rowland (singer) grew up with. Rowland was brought up Catholic were sex and such was dirty and forbidden. When he wrote this song, he was expressing how he felt about Eileen, his first sexual relationship and being free from the strict binds of the Catholic church. "You in that dress, my thoughts I confess, verge on dirty" The song describes the thin line between love and lust.

You want banjo? Check out Steve N' Seagulls cover of AC/DC's "Thunderstruck." And you skipped the intro again! Lol. You've done this a few times where you don't have the song queued up to the very beginning and you miss the first few seconds. Sometimes that can be an important part of the song. Just a heads up. Great channel otherwise.
It was more than a few seconds. It's missing a full 1 minute and 26 seconds. I found the video elsewhere and timed it. The whole intro and first verse is missing, as this video was cut straight to the chorus. That's not their fault, the video they used was not complete.
The person who posted the video they watched cut out the first minute of it. They even wrote in their video description "I had to cut the first minute of the music video for copyright reasons." Jay's never heard the song before and Amber likely hasn't listened to it since her band days, so I think they just didn't realize.
I remember Dexy’s when they were on the radio in the 80s. They were mainly known for this one song. But, this song was heard EVERYWHERE and its dancy music video was seen in heavy rotation on MTV. There is no song quite like it. Very catchy stuff.
Banjo song "In Hell I'll Be In Good Company" by The Dead South they are a Canadian Folk Bluegrass band from Saskatchewan. They are a different vibe for sure.
In the UK at any party with a disco. This song comes on and everyone is stamping their feet clapping hands above their heads along with the music. Normally, the next tune guaranteed would be Hi Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck.
"clapping hands above their heads along with the music. " As weird as it sounds, it just feels wrong to clap along normally to this song. It literally has to be above your head.
@@jazzyb4656 yup, was going to try and see if they would review The Nolans - I'm in the mood for dancing. That was also a tune played back in the day at the discos I attended. I have a feeling they would say Nolan who? 😂
Oh just to let you know that when they talked about Johnnie Ray they were referring to a popular Singer from The 1950's, in fact one of his Songs "The Little White Cloud That Cried" was featured on Happy Days. He played in England and the Ladies went crazy for him.
I love, that if you listen (and manage to understand) the lyrics. This is basically the british version of Born to Run. It's like "come on Eileen, let's get out of this hellhole of a town to live a life of romance and adventure"
In the 80’s (and still) this was one of the “happy songs”, so up & infectious that you had to smile & move. The others are Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves, It’s My Life by Talk Talk (one of my all time best songs ever, I challenge you not to dance) & Manic Monday by The Bangles.
"Dexy's" is short for a drug called Dexedrine. It's basically speed and gave people the energy to party, or run all night. So "Dexy's Midnight Runners" There was a popular weight loss drug sold on TV called "Dexatrim" that eventually was pulled off the market because it was abuse so much.
I remember when this song came out. I had just graduated from high school, and this song was soooooo--DIFFERENT. It has a sort of poor/working class Irish vibe to it. The Disco Era was over, and New Wave had arrived on the scene and also a lot of experimentation. Yeah--very catchy. At first just different, but so unabashedly exuberant, it's just irresistible, and it became very popular, hitting number 1 on the top 40.
Omg! You guys did it. This is one of my all time favorite songs. I love this song so much. So much so that I named my car Eileen, because she is always "dirty" and my bike is of course, Johnny Ray. And, for the record, Amber was saying the name of the band correctly. Like others have mentioned, I'm not sure why you started in the Middle of the song. The beginning is one of the best parts.
So fun that you reviewed this. Too bad the whole intro and first verse are missing. :( They were kind of a one-hit wonder in the states but had lots of more hits in the UK.
Dexy's Midnight Runners were a one-hit wonder in America, but they did pretty well for a few years in Ireland and the UK. Another fun, silly song from the era is "Safety Dance" from Men Without Hats. If you haven't already reviewed it, I encourage it.
Thanks, RUclips algorithm for putting this on my feed. You made me cry. Hope you're happy with yourself. This song had a special meaning for me in the 80s and apparently still does.
One thing about the 80’s (& I really think that Amber feels this too) is that we hold our music near & dear to our hearts and it’s almost as if we are opening up a piece of our very own soul if you get the privilege of being introduced personally to our music! So “tread gently,Jordan”, right, Amber? 😊
Great reaction video this song is still played all the time on radio in uk , any party , weddings everyone sings along and dances, also listen to Geno by them great song, the lead singer Kevin Rowland is from an Irish background, so the band has a distinctive Celtic sound, God Bless
You can't beat going to a party or a night out and they play 'Come on Eileen'. It's the one song even years after it was such a hit, that is guaranteed to get everyones feet stomping and almost bringing the ceiling down. You go home with sore feet but it's worth it. Lol.
Fun fact, Dexys Midnight Runners, allegedly, refers to Dexedrine, a stimulant used by Northern Soulers to help them keep dancing during all-nighters. Hence the name of the band
you guys bring me back to my favorite time ever my teen years of the 80's anyone who was not teen or more in the 80's you missed out on at least 8 years of great music and culture
There’s a great British tv series from the 1990s called “Spaced” that featured this song in one episode, and that’s all I can think of when I hear it anymore. (If you are a fan of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright and have not watched this series, check it out! One ep was their inspiration for Shaun of the Dead.)
This is the only song I really know by *Dexy's Midnight Runner,* so all I can do is think of some other British band that had a big hit here in the states. *Tainted Love, by Soft Cell and Life In A Northern Town by Dream Academy.* Love ❤️ Peace ☮️ and Happiness 😃 Y'all !!
I was born in Lambeth Hospital and later on had a bedsit at 25, Brook Drive, where this video was shot! I must say that my time in that bedsit was a very bleak time....
The video was filmed at the exit the West Square, where I lived, in London. I knew some of the children in the video. The band changed style several times but were very successful. Kevin, the singer, has Irish roots and that influence started to come out as he progressed. He is still working and has a new band.
I'm going to be shunned by everyone. But, Rednex-(Cotton Eye Joe). Then, Right Said Fred-(I'm to Sexy). We all sung the chorus to both. Now it's their turn. Be gentle on me family.😎
The band played that song on The Young Ones TV show and I had to go out and buy the record after that! I might like it better than the original by Van Morrison.
@@gvehar bold words, I love their version but Van Morrison is a living genius. The Young Ones had some great bands on The Damned & Motorhead to name but two.
You pronounce it right, Amber. Dexy's were a band from my local pub scene (Birmingham UK, 70's and 80's ). They came through the local ranks at about the same time as UB40...another local band. Kevin Rowland is the front man. Back in these days I vaguely knew Jim, the Scottish trombonist. He lived in a smallish flat in King's Norton in Birmingham, The flat below was rented by a friend of mine and it's where we all used to go to...(basically) get stoned and listen to new music on vinyl. They had a string of hits, but this is probably the best known. Also try "Geno".
I was 18 that year.. the circle dance where legs were kicked high at the speed of the tempo was such a laugh... I was born on the street where this video was filmed
From my neck of the Wood's 'Willenhall' in the day when Northern Soul was the rage... 'Toora-Loora etc.. Reference to the Irish influence that was a key factor in this part of the World ...
If you like banjo you should react to a band called Dead South and the song In Hell I'll Be In Good Company! You will dig it. It is really groovy Americana music.
I run a concert security company in Albuquerque, NM and have worked their shows a few times. They are really good live and as nice as nice can be to backstage staff and local crew. Can't wait to work them again. In Hell I'll Be in Good Company and Banjo Odessey are sometime the only thing that will calm my 9month old granddaughter down when she's grumpy ..it's rater amusing.

And you skipped the intro again!
I came here to also suggest this video.
That’s a great cover!
Yes, do check out AC/DC. They are going to be a favorite if you enjoy good rock.
The “Tu la lu ra” part is a portion of the song “Irish lullaby”.
It puts a smile on OUR faces when we see you two loving a song we've been enjoying for 40 years!
I remember Dexy’s when they were on the radio in the 80s. They were mainly known for this one song. But, this song was heard EVERYWHERE and its dancy music video was seen in heavy rotation on MTV. There is no song quite like it. Very catchy stuff.
Song with banjo - “ Sweet City Woman” by The Stampeders. Keep the vibe going. Approaching 100k subscribers quickly.
What a brilliant song!🥰
Isnt that a ukelele?
Or Dueling Banjos :P
Banjo song "In Hell I'll Be In Good Company" by The Dead South they are a Canadian Folk Bluegrass band from Saskatchewan. They are a different vibe for sure.
I love that band!
In the UK at any party with a disco. This song comes on and everyone is stamping their feet clapping hands above their heads along with the music.
Normally, the next tune guaranteed would be Hi Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck.
"clapping hands above their heads along with the music. "
As weird as it sounds, it just feels wrong to clap along normally to this song. It literally has to be above your head.
@@kristopherheenk2710 true, even the arthritic pensioners gave it a go with a bum shuffle on a chair.
Jeff Beck himself HATES that song and has vowed never to play it.
He must fvck off to the kitchen when it comes on at a party.
By the time them two songs are played, everyone is bobbing on a bit!!
@@jazzyb4656 yup, was going to try and see if they would review The Nolans - I'm in the mood for dancing. That was also a tune played back in the day at the discos I attended.
I have a feeling they would say Nolan who? 😂
One of the best one hit wonders. Irish lullaby, banjo, violin, accordion... such a fun dance song. MTV staple back in the day.
Now you need to listen to the song The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats.
Yes. A good one.
This song is guaranteed to fill the dance floor
Want the greatest song featuring the banjo…”Rainbow Connection” by Kermit the Frog!
The absolute best song in the history of all humanity.
@@julieharden2433 I agree
@@mirasolbalaga5616 YES! YES! YES!
And there is a newly released version with Barbara Streisand
Oh heck yeah
Oh just to let you know that when they talked about Johnnie Ray they were referring to a popular Singer from The 1950's, in fact one of his Songs "The Little White Cloud That Cried" was featured on Happy Days. He played in England and the Ladies went crazy for him.
I love, that if you listen (and manage to understand) the lyrics. This is basically the british version of Born to Run. It's like "come on Eileen, let's get out of this hellhole of a town to live a life of romance and adventure"
Still send chills down my spine as I remember all the fun nights that this song has been part of. Great band and great memories.
A big hit on early MTV
The ultimate Banjo Song: Dueling Banjos from the movie Deliverance
My ultimate banjo song will always be "Foggy mountain breakdown".
A lot of covers of both of these. Let me suggest Steve Martin and Kermit the Frog.
Caamp, their song by and by is a fantastic song with the banjo.
Say boy... you sure have a purdy comment.
No! Surely. it must be "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" by Flatt and Scruggs.
So "Dexy's Midnight Runners"
There was a popular weight loss drug sold on TV called "Dexatrim" that eventually was pulled off the market because it was abuse so much.
Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town
The Verve - Bitter Sweet symphony
No one is named Dexy. The "Dexy" is short for Dexedrine, an amphetamine that is similar to Ritalin. The lead singer is named Kevin Rowland.
This record is like, 40 years old! Great that you are exploring this era!
Every wedding reception in the UK has this song to get everyone onto the dancefloor
"We are here to spread positivity through music, because... that is what unites us all...." very well said!
They were kind of a one-hit wonder in the states but had lots of more hits in the UK.
Dexy's Midnight Runners were a one-hit wonder in America, but they did pretty well for a few years in Ireland and the UK. Another fun, silly song from the era is "Safety Dance" from Men Without Hats. If you haven't already reviewed it, I encourage it.
I saw dexys midnight runners years ago in Cardiff and then again as special guests in Birmingham...loved them..yep I'm that old 😂x
Those Smiles on both faces when first chorus hits! 😀😀😀 love it! 🏴🇬🇧
Great reaction video this song is still played all the time on radio in uk , any party , weddings everyone sings along and dances, also listen to Geno by them great song, the lead singer Kevin Rowland is from an Irish background, so the band has a distinctive Celtic sound, God Bless
I love this song and you two as well. I don't sleep well at night so I check out a few of your songs and groove with you😁❤️
This is played at literally every British wedding!
nope not literally but every single one!! but my favourite song at parties was boxer beat!
Girl friend don’t worry about the words,it’s all about the tune, glad you guys like British/ music ❤
Heard 40 years ago and like the song says I'll hum this tune forevermore!
you guys bring me back to my favorite time ever my teen years of the 80's anyone who was not teen or more in the 80's you missed out on at least 8 years of great music and culture
More 80’s. Kajagoogoo, Adam Ant, Joe Jackson, Flock of Seagulls, Psychedelic Furs…..
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science 80s banger!
I LOVE THIS SONG AND YOU TWO ARE BEAUTIFUL ❤️
He has a wonderful voice.
Tainted Love, by Soft Cell ... good one!
Another good Dexys Midnight Runners song is called Gino I think.
My mom's name was Ilene. Spelled differently, but I use to play this song and she hated it. 🤣 RIP Momma, I love you.
Even today, many many years later and i sing with this and bop a long.lol
I was born in Lambeth Hospital and later on had a bedsit at 25, Brook Drive, where this video was shot!
I must say that my time in that bedsit was a very bleak time....
The video was filmed at the exit the West Square, where I lived, in London. I knew some of the children in the video. The band changed style several times but were very successful. Kevin, the singer, has Irish roots and that influence started to come out as he progressed. He is still working and has a new band.
Definitely Sweet City Woman for some more banjo - cool little song.
I'm going to be shunned by everyone. But, Rednex-(Cotton Eye Joe). Then, Right Said Fred-(I'm to Sexy). We all sung the chorus to both. Now it's their turn. Be gentle on me family.😎
Yes this a Irish band and yes you pronounced it right Amber.
English band from Birmingham actually.
@@mikeede49 Correct and right but just like The Pogues, most members were of Irish descent and that was a major influence on their style.
This song is just irresistable - you can't listen to it and watch the video without smiling.
This was one of those songs that was played endlessly on MTV
You should check out their other huge hit "Geno", which is a classic soul stomper with fantastic horns.
You should listen to each of their five fantastic albums. Kevin Rowland is a genius.
Their other major hit was "Jackie Wilson Said", which is also worth a listen.
One of the Great British One Hit Wonders . Lived in England when this came out . Everyone went nuts for this
Geno and Jackie Wilson Said were also pretty big hits. Especially Geno.
@@cathrynlisa Yes, Geno was actually their first UK number one single before Come on Eileen gave them their second one.
Why?!? And I bet it was the only song they ever did...
@@SweetThing You just don't get it - surprising given your username is also the name of a Van Morrison track!
Not the only song ...Geno number 1 in 1980 (uk) There there my dear number 7 and Because of you number 13...THINK before posting you idiot !
1982 a super amazing song....and this is just the beggining of the 80s gold music era❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dexy's is short for Dexedrine (speed) which was used as a recreational drug by the Mods in England in the 60's so they could dance all night.
i'll second the motion for bruce hornsby and the range, "that's just the way it is"
I heard it the first time in the movie “the perks of being a wallflower “
Great movie!
@@laurakali6522 yeah and with a formidable soundtrack
This was played at every disco and family party when I was growing up and everyone always danced to it
I was 18 that year.. the circle dance where legs were kicked high at the speed of the tempo was such a laugh... I was born on the street where this video was filmed
If you want banjo: "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" by Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs,.. they also do "Dueling Banjo's"
Definitely
My dog and I both love this song. As soon as he hears the whistling his ears peek up.❤
I run a concert security company in Albuquerque, NM and have worked their shows a few times. They are really good live and as nice as nice can be to backstage staff and local crew. Can't wait to work them again. In Hell I'll Be in Good Company and Banjo Odessey are sometime the only thing that will calm my 9month old granddaughter down when she's grumpy ..it's rater amusing.
They were a one-hit wonder back in the 80's. One of the greatest songs of the 80's no doubt.
After hearing this, our local folk band renamed themselves, "Sennapods Midnight Runners"!
