Thanx! I always thought it was just an Irish Lullaby, as in Bing Crosby. When I was a merchant mariner, we had a crewman who would get all homesick from time to time. He was from the small island nation Tuvalu. He was all lonely like on the fantail one night at sunset having a smoke, and I was afraid he might jump, so started singing "Tu va lu valu ra - Tu va lu ra Lye - Tu va lu valu ra is a South Sea lullaby..." and he got so emotional it kinda broke him, to where he was crying and hugging me - then snapped out of it and started laughing. He was all better after that - but it was so weird that I was hit with that thought to make a lullaby out of Tuvalu!

The song is about young love in the midst of a beat-down, depressed society. 'Poor Old Johnny Ray' was a throwback to how their parents had hope but soon lost hope and became 'beat down' and that he and Eileen won't succumb to the same thing.

“Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral” is an old Irish lullaby meaning “Goodbye for now. I’ll be seeing you”. It is used very informally as “goodbye”. The etymology of “toodle-doo” is unclear, but it may derive from “toddle (off)”.

    • @HeatherMyfanwyTylerGreey

Kevin Rowland (leader of the group) was born in the Midlands between Wolverhampton and Birmingham - England. When they recorded this song they were living in Birmingham, although Kevin Rowland had lived for 3 years in Ireland previous to this, which obviously influenced his decision to record this . They had several top ten hits in the U.K and were a major force in the early 80's dance music scene, although I don't know if all the other UK hits were big in the USA. Dexy's changed their image a number of times - often with the release of a new record.

Yup. Young couple that grew up together, starting to explore love and physical affection. They tell each other that they're smarter than their parents, and that they'll escape the way of life they grew up in, though the singer admits that they're lying to themselves, and they are just following the same pattern as their parents and older generations, "singing the same songs". Its a mixture of the joy and hope of youth and the realization that nothing will really ever change.
Johnny Ray is an American singer from just before Rock and Roll. He was noted for always singing about crying. Billy Idol references him in one of his songs too.

The band's name was derived from Dexedrine, a brand of dextroamphetamine used as a recreational drug among Northern soul fans to give them energy to dance all night. While recruiting members for the new band, Kevin Rowland noted that "Anyone joining Dexys had to give up their job and rehearse all day long ... We had nothing to lose and felt that what we were doing was everything."

This song is TRUE because it is so universal. Guy and girl grow up together, lose touch, meet up later in life after they've grown up and he is into it/wants to get in her pants. This is a great "stalker song".
A stalker song is a song where the singer (usually a dude) is trying to get the attention/ affection/ body of a person (usually a woman or girl) who probably doesn't actually have any interest in said singer.
These are Irish singers and they would not be Gypsy, they would be Irish Travelers. Also, Johnnie Ray was a famous singer from back in the day (probably 1950s-60s).

The one-hit wonder. I remember driving my daughter to Jr. High, and we would crank this up and sing it at the top of our lungs for fun. Greetings from Seattle!

This group was definitely different. You have to remember this group came out when everybody was into New Wave, so a group that wore torn overalls and featured an accordion, fiddles and a banjo definitely stood out from the rest, which was exactly what they wanted to do.

This song stood out in the 80s because of the instruments. Almost Bluegrass in sound but faster.

I always laugh when i hear the lyrics go from, "My thoughts, I confess, verge on dirty," in the beginning, to "My thoughts, I confess, well, they're dirty," at the end. 😂

Part of the song (Tu-la-rah-tu-la-rah) is about 200 years old portion of a Jersey, which is a bar song that would be sung by all in the bar. An example would be the old "99 Beers On The Wall" that would make the bar rounds. Very popular experience in the "Old World" of Europe.

In Germany at that time there was no party, no disco evenings or New Year's Eve celebrations without this song. And you can still hear it regularly on nights like this today.
Another band that also made music that sounds similar is called the J. Geils Band.
They had many hits in the 70s and 80s and I would like to recommend 'Centerfold' and 'Freeze Frame!'
There are a lot of other hits from these guys, but that's it for now.
    Keep it up, great reactions!
    Greetings from northern Germany 🇩🇪♥️

They're an English pop rock band from Birmingham.. such a great nostalgic song and later in the mid 90s it was covered by an American Ska band called Save Ferris which did an amazing job and definitely worth checking out.. it's one of those songs that the more you listen to it the more you love.. keep up the great work mate and greetings from Sydney Australia ✌️

That very beginning violin melody is an Irish folk song called "Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms", before the beat kicks in. I've been a fan since this song came out in 1983, still have the album. This was their second album, and the first one is fantastic if you love that Stax, Fame, Northern Soul sound, which I do, lol! Kevin Rowland, lead singer, founder, songwriter, and driving force, is wildly creative, eccentric, and has written some amazing songs besides this one. There's one that came out around 10 or so years ago called Incapable of Love, with a female singer as well, and it's just epic! The video is a mini movie, and the song is fun, and girlie can SANG!

"Naked under their overalls"?? While playing instruments, dancing and singing? A story with photographs and memories? Music in a time and place? Gypsies? There's a whole world outside America and rap.

We sang the hook, sang the words we could pick out, mumbled the rest!!! This was amazing when it came out. I'm 55, and about 10 years ago I found the version that had the lyrics. First time I knew the words, but i watched the video until I had the lyrics down. Such a time machine for me!!

The Ska Cover by Save Ferris is totally worth watching is well. They don’t change up the lyrics overly much, much did a great job translating the “Roma” dance aesthetic into the mosh pit based Ska scene.

Over in Killarney, many years ago
My mother sang a song to me in tones so soft and low
Just a simple little ditty in her good old Irish way
And I'd give the world if I could hear that song of hers today
    Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral
    Too-ra-loo-ra-li
    Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral
    Hush now, don't you cry
    Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral
    Too-ra-loo-ra-li
    Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral
    That's an Irish lullaby
    Bing Crosby sings this beautifully.
