Fun Fact: When this hit #1 in the US, it knocked Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" off the top spot.
And was replaced the very next week by Beat It.

"Dexy" was a reference to Dextroamphetamine, which is one of the two mainline treatments for ADHD.
Back in the 60's, it was widely prescribed as a diet pill, as appetite loss is one of its common side effects.
Speaking of which, have you ever heard the Stones' "Mother's Little Helper"? The subject of the song was ... you guessed it... Dextroamphetamine!

The phrase 'Dexys Midnight Runners' was a kind of a nickname for some of the fans of Northern Soul in the 70s UK. they took the drug Dexedrine, a brand of dextroamphetamine used as a recreational drug among Northern soul fans to give them energy to dance all night.

Dexys are one of my favourite bands and as good as 'Eileen' is, there is so much more to them. They are from Birmingham UK. Their 1980 debut album - 'Searching for the young soul rebels' is great, 'Geno' was their first UK no.1. Kevin Rowland is the singer and writer, he's pretty intense but sincere with it. Every album takes a different direction, they are very underrated by most but if you know you know. The band's name was derived from Dexedrine, a brand of dextroamphetamine used as a recreational drug among Northern soul fans to give them energy to dance all night. Cheers.

If you finally ever make it to react to Pain of Salvation song, "On a Tuesday" look for a studio version, because the live versions out there are not great sounding at all. Also prefer a lyric video..lyrics are very important.
The album, “The passing light of day”, which “On a Tuesday” is the opening track, is probably one of the most, if not the most, painful and personal reflective and introspective pieces of music you’ll ever hear.
It is written by the band’s leader, Daniel Gildenlow, he’s the singer and main composer of the band. Back in 2014 he was admitted to hospital with an skin infection which escalated rapidly within hours to be this life threatening situation where he was being eaten alive by a flesh eating bacteria. Yes, it sounds horrendous, and he ended up being in hospital for four months, trying to unsuccessfully fight this bacteria.
So this guy, who’s pretty young and fit and had all the “checks” to a long prosperous life suddenly had to face up to his own mortality and to evaluate his relationship with those he loved those around like his children, his parents, his wife and even God and all this stuff that goes through someone's mind when they are deep into such a situation and the album is all about that, so it’s a concept album, written or al least imagined to be written form a hospital bed.
BTW, Daniel Gildenlow was born on June 5th 1973, so he was born “On a Tuesday”
Dexys we’re classed as pop / new wave by many critics which is a bit of an insult , they were a soul band , the live album at the royal court Liverpool (I was there ) is a classic.

It’s not an exact match but this in 82 was a more subtle approach to getting a girl than 77’s Only The Good Die Young. Skipping seduction and going for what you want seemed to be a common theme in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Both were fun at the school and church dances until the chaperones listened to the actual words.
