    Many thanks for your video. I liked it. i am searching for a video on the Presario R3230US purchased in 2006... Its CPU is a Pentium 4 -2.80Htz. I wonder if I am wasting my time on it but ... nobody would like to throw away an electronic before knowing what was the faulty part. We all want to learn the causes of the problems. I just wish video doers would carry a gopro or else that would allow them to keep both hands on the work. Also searching for a professional like you that would allow us to watch the findings and learn, in my area 34205. Many thanks again.

    I have a now old dell vostro 1000 that has no power or even light. I'm told hard drive doesn't spin. I removed hard drive. Should it turn on without hard drive? If not, I'm going to do what you teach above, removing connector clip under keyboard and checking if it then powers up? Any info you can add for this? Ty

    where you located at brother? Have a Toshiba laptop here that I'd love to get working again....was working fine, then powered off and got up the next day to find it got a hardware error and will not boot into windows, nor will it even let me into the BIOS to boot from CD Rom or USB to try and fix it....borrowed a hard drive bay to try and get the 300GB of data off the drive that's in it and it's saying the drive needs to be formatted? It seems the motherboard could possibly be faulty? Being it's not even allowing me into the BIOS?

    • @carpio01

      I am located in the Central coast of California. Does it even give you any lights to indicate it is getting power? if it turns on does it only show a black screen? any "blinking lights"?

    • @SurprizedDaily
      @SurprizedDaily 8 лет назад

      yes I get power and a few different screens, one being a blue screen that flashes so fast there's no chance of reading what all it says.... what's got me stumped the most is how & what caused the drive to not show anything on it now & the MB not allowing me to enter BIOS at all, there's no splash screen as it's trying to boot up either (toshiba showing BIOS keys to enter)
      I could explain far better if I had a way to speak with you....I'm all way over on Virginia here, love to know what you think may be the trouble(s) with this one....thank you.

      If it is a more recent model then the OS might have been installed under UEFI mode, instead of standard mode and when that happens something gets stored in the HDD to make it boot faster. I do not know enough about UEFI to be able to assist you but that is what I have learned so far. Try to run repair tools on your HDD but do not reformat it or delete any partitions because you will lose your data. I will try to do some more research and if I find something then Ill let you know. Thanks.

      Ok lets try this: since you are not prompted to press F2 - when you first turn the computer on press and hold the "Esc" key for about 3 seconds, then if prompted to press F1 do so. Hope it helps.

      Yes some laptops do have that option, specially the ones that have integrated batteries. That can't be easily removed to reset the bios. I have a more general video to do initial troubleshooting. Thanks for the tip.

    What if a bare motherboard doesn't turn on?
    I have an ACER Extensa 5620 with this problem. I took the motherboard out, unplugged pretty much everything except the cooler (can I safely detach it too?) and the power button (unless you know how to turn it on without it, by shorting some pins on the motherboard?) and the LED panel. But nope, no signs of life. None of the diodes is lighting up. The fan is not spinning. I checked the voltage coming into the motherboard from the power supply socket and it seems to have the nominal voltage. What else could be wrong?

    • @Jack-dh6li
      @Jack-dh6li 6 лет назад

      Well, you should probably take it to a repair shop or see if there is any more videos that work, my computer is doing this same thing, the fan wont work less wont turn on, so I'm waiting to take it to a repair shop. Hope you computer works again.

    • @bonbonpony
      @bonbonpony 6 лет назад +1

      Well, I kinda already solved that problem and the laptop turns on now. I measured the voltages around the motherboard and noticed that the 3.3V power rail is missing - the one that powers up the BIOS chip and the SMC. The 5V was also missing (the one that powers up the USB ports). The MOSFETs in the buck converters seemed to be fine, but then I noticed that they are all controlled by one MAX chip, so my suspicions went there, and when I was measuring the voltages around that chip, I noticed that the 2.0 V reference voltage is much lower than it should be. But when I was measuring the pins of that chip, suddenly it started working. I guess there was some bad junction on one of the pins, most likely on that ref voltage, because after that it was 2.0 V again and the 3.3V and 5V power rails appeared again. Now it's turning on, the system (Linux) is booting fine to the user log in screen.
      But there seems to be another problem, and I remembered that it was there before:
      When I try working on it, it suddenly resets and boots up from the beginning :P
      Sometimes it can run undisturbed by 20 minutes or longer. But as soon as I start clicking around in the GUI, it reboots again. I don't think it's overheating or something, because the fans are barely spinning at those moments, and it's not that I'm doing anything CPU- or GPU-consuming. I'm really out of ideas what could be the cause of this problem :/ Maybe it's still that suspicious MAX chip, or maybe it's a bad RAM? I don't know. But it's really bugging me, because otherwise this laptop could work just fine.

    • @carpio01
      @carpio01  7 лет назад

      Check that you got the correct adapter, Check under the laptop. Or under the battery to see the specifications for the power adapter. Check that you got the correct power adapter by making sure that the voltage is the same and that the Amperage your replacement adapter is equal to or higher than the original one. The problem might be that you got an adapter that is not capable of supplying enough current to the computer. If the computer needs more current than it is receiving from the adapter it will put a strain on the adapter and the adapter could get damaged, or go into a damage protection mode and turn off.

      thank you for your reply sir. but as i said, i already tried it in another and the same laptop. acer aspire 5810t series. 19v 3.42 amp. and its the same. so maybe the problem is the motherboard? or the board where i put the dc jack? as i check the name of the board is JM51 mini board. thanks sir

    • @carpio01
      @carpio01  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, if yo have checked on another of the same computer then I would say that, your computer might have a short in some of its circuitry and thus it is pulling more current. Try to isolate where the problem might be, you mentioned that there is a mini card for the power jack so first I would check that it is properly functioning. Then proceed to trouble shoot the rest of the motherboard.

    when you find out that the problem is the motherboard, do you use the voltage part of DMM or resistance ? it seems a lot on youtube from asia can check the voltage regulators etc with just the DMM...if you can produce any of these type of videos, would be much appreciated ...I have acer aspire e1 571, and have the schematic... thanks

    • @carpio01
      @carpio01  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching, I do not know much about component level repair (I am in the process of learning) but my intent is to produce videos like you mention.
      For checking voltage you follow your schematic and the power rails, and DO NOT USE RESISTANCE mode to check a powered device. On the schematic it should tell you the proper voltage at certain points in the board. Check that they are present, and it does depend on the state of the computer, if it plugged in but not powered on there will not be voltage at certain points in the motherboard. When the power button gets pressed the state changes and voltage is applied and then goes to a chip that will perform some logic and determine if power is ok, and then it lets the voltages power other sections of the motherboard and components.
      As far as resistance, the most useful test is continuity/diode mode. The way they check is to see if there is continuity where there should be none. And if they find it then it indicates that there might be a short in that part or in the circuit that part is a member of. If on the other hand you know there should be continuity on a part and you get nothing then it indicates that you have a "blown" component, basically destroying the path for signals/electricity and you get an open circuit.

I replaced the board and then it was fully functional again. Hope it helps out.

      It is really difficult for me to help you, because I do not have the computer in front of me so I can test it. But, the best way for you to do it is to go trough the video and for example test the power supply, and keep notes of what you did, what was your observations, and any questions you might have. I do not know if you have the tools to test, so in order to help I would need a lot more information. keep notes of stuff you did and questions you have, and maybe I can help you. It is not guaranteed that I will be able to, and sometimes I will not have time to come to RUclips to check the messages right away.

      You could try to remove the battery and power lead and press down on the start button for around 30 seconds. Then put the power lead back in and press start button. This removes any static build up and drains the capacitors. I hope this helps.
