I think Ireland were the better team over the two tests, despite less points on aggregate over the two games. Still level as best two teams in the world for me. Extraordinary considering the players they were missing. I won't say anything about some of the ref and TMO decisions.

SA were missing some players too and it was their first test since the RWC final. I think people are reading too much into these games and both teams will come away from this with some good positives and some areas of concern - luckily both coaches are good enough to deal with those concerns.

I think ire have found their starting 2nd row back row combination for the next year with Ryan and mccarthy in the row and beirne at 6. It just adds extra weight and height and frees up beirne to be a greater menace at the breakdown. I hope izzy, Tom ahern, o toole (at loosehead) and jager all get game time in November as they look ready for international level. Also watch out for Matthew device (9 for connacht), he looks like he could class

Boks - back to back World Cups, peaking age squad and tonnes of depth. England rebuilding and playing great attacking rugby with a promising and aggressive young pack. Ireland may be ageing but still unearthing talented players, can compete physically with any pack. All Blacks looking tactically much more versatile and resilient. France with a strong U20 pipeline (like England) and possess peak Dupont. Test Rugby is as good as it's been with healthy competition. Even better if the likes of Australia, Scotland and Argentina improve (which I think all 3 will do in the next 2 years) and a well-coached Italy!

France are going to continue to grow.
All blacks are the all blacks.
Ireland have a conveyor belt of constant talent.
      Argentina?
South Africa have a scary amount of talent coming through and a massive amount of room to grow even better.
      England are building nicely.
Scotland are boom and bust. No change.
Wales are now a club team.
Australia have a band aid on. Sad times.
Japan continue to grow domestically. Interesting.

Great analysis as always. The 2 test matches underlined the biggest concerns the IRFU have to correct - the Props. No question that Tadgh Furlong is struggling - I suspect that he is dealing with recurring injuries (hamstring & calf) that have negatively affected his performances. The same will happen to Andrew Porter if Ireland continue to play him for 70+ minutes every game.
Funnily enough, the other positions of concern (Out-half & Full Back) may well have been answered for the National Squad with the performances of Jamie Osborne and Ciaran Frawley - BUT, those respective performances have now pushed the Leinster coaching pair of Leo Cullen & Jacques Nienaber squarely into the headlights. 3 consecutive seasons losing the CCF and no URC Titles; Andy Farrell taking Ciaran Frawley & Sam Prendergast on tour instead of Ross or Harry Byrne. Doesn't take a genius to figure out where the media & fans are going to be looking when the URC kicks off for Leinster.
Jack Crowley continues to improve imo. He makes mistakes but, he does not seem to dwell on them during a game - a really positive sign. Craig Casey answered some of his detractors in that 1st Test performance. Ditto Ronan Kelleher - got to see him making some of those powerful ball carries he is so good at.

Irelands strenght was great passing, smart kicking more bonding time for an inexperienced halfback more game time for fringe players who held up well in two ground war games. The line out was very good and the players are hungry for their spots back james ryan in particular. we were amazing in the air. Irelands weaknesses I've noticed second test it was scrum Furlong got minced no way to sugarcoat it. ourdicipline needs serious work mcarthy in particular I know playing on the edge can leak penalties but he needs to be careful not to get a rep with refs. Ireland have this irritating habit of trying to burst over the try line with one out runners and it cost us the QF and a try. it resulted in frawleys first drop goal but we need to get more creative when going for the try line we have been held up a few times and it has really cost us.

Excellent video. I was very happy with the performance of our boys. They really put it up to the Boks particularly in the second test. I have to agree there is no dispute that with back to back World Cups the Boks are the best team in the world, but not against Ireland. 4 in the last 5 (including the World Cup, the only team to beat South Africa) and 9 from the last 14.😉

Agree with most except a few. Porter and Furlong are still the same top class operators. It’s up to other Nothern Hemisphere props especially Irish ones to put pressure on them. They played more minutes then there opposition, there work rates, defence, attack, lineout and scrum work was great overall. They looked dominant in the first half of both games. The scrum collapse at the end of test 1 and the second half issues in game 2 were with one or both of them off the pitch. Joe MaCarty is up because he was so physical in that second test with some wonderful running lines, Casey was one of our best players in the first test and only the injury forced him off and prevented him from starting the second test so another up.

Do the people who claimed the first drop goal was illegal say the second last SA penalty should never have been awarded?

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji 3 месяца назад

Springbok fan here. I never had an issue with the drop goal, probably because it looked like a drop goal, it felt like a drop goal so therefore it must have been a bloody drop goal. And if you are talking about the accidental offsides penalty where the Irish player never knocked the ball on, then of course it was a wrong call.
There are fans on both sides of the fence who are cherry picking little incidents that they believe were unfairly called, as happens in EVERY game by every fanbase (more vocal on the losing side usually) and of course those little incidents are the ones that "prove" that the outcome was incorrect. Most of it can be boiled down to wishful thinking, refusal to accept defeat or just utter ignorance of the laws and protocols of the game. Sadly, this will never change. If we ever get to a stage where AI referee the game, some fans will be bleating that the AI were programmed to favour their opposition - and you know it lol.

Awesome series and the Boks are still World Number 1!! Credit where credit is due. They are also fantastic hosts!! BTW loved the analysis!!
Can we discuss the refereeing team?
I watched Nigel Owens last week. He reviewed the James Lowe try that was disallowed by the TMO and he was emphatic - the TMO should never have been involved in that decision and that try should have been given. I like Luke Pearce and no ref is ever perfect, except for Owens :), but Pearce made some poor calls. He didn't even look at the tackle that resulted in Casey being stretchered off. Player safety? Really, really poor. He was also pressing Dickson to ramp up the card for the crocodile roll that resulted in the YC but where was he when Furlong took a head direct to the face or Casey being hammered by Snyman? Where was the TMO with the Furlong injury. Absent, silent! Furlong went off shortly after for an HIA. There will always be judgements we don't like, and we often forget the ones we did like. All in all, the refereeing wasn't as good as it ought to be and needs to be.

Just on the DG, it did look very close, most of the Irish lads played gaelic and its similar to a gaelic point kick, I also looked at lots of historical footage, there have been quite a number of kicks which were similarly very close to a full kick, all of those clearly given so I think it would be harsh to disallow it. Osborne is without doubt a match for Keenan, my felling is both will be on the team, Keenan at full back, Osborne in the centre and really unfortunate that would mean no bench spot for McCloskey. Also, loosehead is an issue, Cian Healy has been awesome for Ireland, but hopefully Farrell has someone in mind to fill that position.

Being held up over the line etc in both tests, shows Ireland left more out there. Beirne at 6 is a no brainer. Irish props look very fatigued... definitely overplayed and needs more variation. Their overall play is better than almost all props in the world but scrummaging is at about no.3 in the world. No shame in being outscrummed by boks...they'd do that to anyone. Porters penalties are getting out of hand. Ireland still not quite right tho...attack is not as fluid as it was and lineout is inexplicably off. First 15 out there would be as good or better than the boks and anyone else on average and as a team/unit they are more than the sum of their parts.

Ireland were very good in both tests but South Africa were equally good and maybe deserved to win both tests but I'm glad it ended 1-1 tbh. I thought Osborne was excellent and Frawley certainly increased his reputation on the back of these 2 drop goals, the second was such a pressure moment yet he nailed it.
