This despicable &^$# did what he wanted: Take over other people's properties, close hotels, allow threats and destruction by military and police, increase prices...... After we left, we stayed in touch with 2 families to check whether we could help them to flee the country and settle down on one og the Canary Islands (La Palma) where we had some friends (business relations), but we failed. It was impossible.... Moreover, a few months later we lost contact with them..........

One of the main problems is that people don't want to admit that they are very much a part of the problem. I call it "Tending the Garden". If you've ever tried to grow a garden, you know that it's work. You have to make tough calls. And while you can live on the largess of the garden that your father tended, and and your grandfather built, that bounty will diminish every year if you don't do as they did. That's where we're at, as he mentions in the first moments. Tending The Garden means you have to recognize that you don't know it all, and strangers certainly don't know what's best for you. The only thing you can no for certain is that the garden is working right now because your father and your grandfather had a very specific way of tending it. If you change that in any way, you cannot be certain of the outcome. Only in your arrogance, something people have in spades, can you believe that you know better and your new way will result in a better garden. However, there are always snakes in the grass. There will always be people clamoring for a bit of your harvest. There will always be strangers whispering their sweet-nothings in your ear, or screeching about how mean you are from the rooftops. Your job is to remain firm and defend your ways, the ways that you know work because you can look back into recent history and see them working. Nothing about tending the garden is easy, and that's what makes the snakes in the grass so tempting. They know that they only have to get you to give an inch, and then wait on your son, who they know they only have to get to give a single inch. They know that they can craft an argument that sounds logical, rational, fair, just, right, and that makes your life a little easier. They dangle that promise of a better tomorrow in front of you.... and it's your job to resist the temptation. It's your job to remember that they cannot know the future any more than you can. But, that means you have to be willing to fight. That means you must be willing to pull the weeds, literally and figuratively. No garden thrives when overrun by weeds, again literally and figuratively. Why fight, though, when it's so much easier to go along to get along? Who will back you up if you decide to fight? Where's the fraternity and solidarity? That's why socialists always target the young and the disenfranchised first. They go for the weak, like any predator, but instead of destroying the weak... then strengthen them, embolden them, and cause a rot to start festering in the Garden of Society. This is why the weeds must be pulled. Harsh as that might sound, if you don't pull the weeds, they will overtake the garden and the harvest won't be bountiful any more. The problem here in the states, is that the schools are teaching our kids thats it's good, or that it's fair. However, they don't teach the true history of this type of government, which is absolutely horrible. Just ask a Cuban, or someone that lived in the old Soviet Union or Eastern Europe. As World War I ignited and sent Europe up in flames, those who had read the pair’s work and become enchanted with its utopian vision watched with baited breath to see if the prophecy would be fulfilled. And fulfilled it was...in Russia. For the moment, it would go no further. Through the late teens and early 20s, Europe picked up the pieces, mopped up the blood, and with somewhat mixed results, tried to get on with their lives. There were no workers’ revolts. There were no poor people eating rich people. There was just plain work. To be sure, some of it was supervised by evil bosses, and some of it was done by children. But there were still factories, and those factories still had workers and bosses. What went wrong? Well, for one thing, the workers had just spent five years shooting and bombing each other. There were considerably fewer of them than there had been when Marx wrote Das Kapital. But there was a bigger problem. The few workers that were left just weren’t interested in socialism; especially those who didn’t work in factories. The jobs they had were not great, and frankly their bosses weren’t that great either-but they were surviving. In some cases they were even thriving. Many of them had grown up in poverty, and fought bitterly to escape it. Biting the hand the fed them did not seem like a great idea. Marx was quite nonchalantly disowned by the very demographic he had claimed to speak for. So a tiny cabal of German philosophers, certain of Marx’s veracity, decided on a different pathway to get his influence to the masses. Marx himself had waited for it to happen naturally. Lenin and Trotsky had brought it through a messy revolution. Neither would work with the peoples of the West. Capitalism was too deeply ingrained in the collective psyche. The group of philosophers, known as the “Frankfurt School”, blamed this condition, naturally, on those who had suborned it: Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Company, A&P, Radio City Music Hall...the list goes on. There was no way they would be able to release society from the addictions it had created for itself. The whole system would have to come down. Only then could something new be built in it’s place. The thinkers of the Frankfurt School were under no illusions that this would be an easy task. The destruction of five thousand years of tradition would not happen overnight, and it would not happen by itself. The first step was to get people to not like their society-to see it the way the Frankfurt school did. Having been rejected by their original audience, the Frankfurt School thinkers needed a new proletariat. That hadn’t worked in the microcosm in which Marx had tried it. But, why, the thought occurred to them, stop with just one group? What if they could create many proletariats? After all, history had given them plenty of other collective grievances and class struggles. The Civil War was only about six decades gone. The working poor in their arguments could be expanded to the poor in general, who could then be turned against the robber barons. And of course, the suffragettes were still embroiled in their struggle against the patriarchy. So Herbert Markuse and his Frankfurt School companions set out to make their case. They began by advocating for the end of everything that seemed too “normal” to them: marriage, jobs, music, philosophy, art...if socialism hadn’t produced it, then it was evil. The very world around you, they would say today, is an illusion; a gilded cage, if not created, then at least aided and exploited, by those in power to keep you blinded to the fact that you were a serf, enslaved by a powerful elite who would always enjoy power and privilege at your expense, that you will never have access to. And just who were these mysterious oppressors? That depended on who these new socialists were talking to. If you were poor, it was men like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and the bands of powerful corporate executives who followed them. If you were black, it was the whites who had enslaved your grandparents, and would have enslaved you if not for the brave progressives that had fought for the Thirteenth Amendment. (It was, in fact, Republicans who had fought for the Thirteenth Amendment-I’ll discuss the progressives’ chameleon-like ability to change political positions a bit later.) And if you were a woman, it was the men in your lives who had deceived you into marrying them, forced you into roles decided for you by society, against your will, and were routinely having their way with you at night. These progressive thinkers possessed a unique ability to figure out what made you as an individual angry-to find your mental weak point, and then tell you a story that you could relate to; that pressed the right buttons. Then they would offer you their antidote to this oppression, which was always revolution, followed by Marxism. Steinem and her misandrist followers were a product of this movement. The feminism of the 1960s, and the feminism of today, are not really feminist at all. They were just one of many disparate movements that had been co-opted by the progressives, and amalgamated into one big proletariat. I have found generally that builders even very working class, as I once was, are rarely socialists and often they can't say why, but when I have effectively stated what you have done here, they ALWAYS agree. WHY? Because builders know that even though it may be messy, dirty and often takes either a lot of muscle or machines BUT 'destruction' is always much quicker than re-building. As then the process which requires careful planning, choosing the best materials, ordering and receiving them, drawings (something I did as a young man), layout and marking and then the 'actual' construction over a much longer period of time than the very destruction of the old building. Something later in my life achieving a degree I retrained as a teacher and the above I often used in debates with teachers and they simply could not comprehend the reality of my example why builders tend not to be socialists, coming back with the condescending attitude builders were not academically inclined and they had no idea of the evil of capitalism only concerned with making money. One thing I also noticed with most teachers, they rarely ever did their own DIY around the house when having the school holidays as I did, they always paid a builder, plumber, electrician etc to come in and do it for them.

The problem the socialists have is that they won't have a capitalist to pay it because they kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. The goose is incentive. Incentive is killed under socialism so productivity declines and it leads to widespread poverty and shortages. Meanwhile in capitalism, incentive motivates people to innovate and work hard because they know they will be able to keep the profits of their labor, their risk of capital, and their ingenuity. I lived under socialism and not everything is as bad as they say. Not all socialism is the same. In my case, everyone was employed and everyone could solve the housing issue. Education was much better than in the West and more extensive. There were many top experts and very smart people. Family values came first. There was a lot of emphasis on the cultural advancement of people and we had a healthy society that was constantly progressing. The bad thing was that everything was centralized and you were never sure which fool could come to power. I would not recommend socialism to anyone, but in a situation where society is too liberalized, it would be good to take some time to restructure society and create responsible and valuable people without corruption, crime and all the negative phenomena in today's rich societies that have become slaves to money that has become God. Today we have a democratic system that has many flaws. I don't like some of that lobbying that is pure corruption. Strange laws are passed that are against life. I didn't like Communism or some socialism because it can't work so that all people are equal. Someone is always selling a lie. Usually people forget that they were small and when they climb high in the hierarchy, they have no measure and honesty. That's why it's still a good democracy where you can serve a maximum of two mandates and then you have to retire.

One of the main problems is that people don't want to admit that they are very much a part of the problem. I call it "Tending the Garden". If you've ever tried to grow a garden, you know that it's work. You have to make tough calls. And while you can live on the largess of the garden that your father tended, and and your grandfather built, that bounty will diminish every year if you don't do as they did. That's where we're at, as he mentions in the first moments.
Tending The Garden means you have to recognize that you don't know it all, and strangers certainly don't know what's best for you. The only thing you can no for certain is that the garden is working right now because your father and your grandfather had a very specific way of tending it. If you change that in any way, you cannot be certain of the outcome. Only in your arrogance, something people have in spades, can you believe that you know better and your new way will result in a better garden.
However, there are always snakes in the grass. There will always be people clamoring for a bit of your harvest. There will always be strangers whispering their sweet-nothings in your ear, or screeching about how mean you are from the rooftops. Your job is to remain firm and defend your ways, the ways that you know work because you can look back into recent history and see them working.
Nothing about tending the garden is easy, and that's what makes the snakes in the grass so tempting. They know that they only have to get you to give an inch, and then wait on your son, who they know they only have to get to give a single inch. They know that they can craft an argument that sounds logical, rational, fair, just, right, and that makes your life a little easier. They dangle that promise of a better tomorrow in front of you.... and it's your job to resist the temptation. It's your job to remember that they cannot know the future any more than you can.
But, that means you have to be willing to fight. That means you must be willing to pull the weeds, literally and figuratively. No garden thrives when overrun by weeds, again literally and figuratively.
Why fight, though, when it's so much easier to go along to get along? Who will back you up if you decide to fight? Where's the fraternity and solidarity?
That's why socialists always target the young and the disenfranchised first. They go for the weak, like any predator, but instead of destroying the weak... then strengthen them, embolden them, and cause a rot to start festering in the Garden of Society.
This is why the weeds must be pulled. Harsh as that might sound, if you don't pull the weeds, they will overtake the garden and the harvest won't be bountiful any more.
This is why Edmund Burke warned, "All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

There were no workers’ revolts. There were no poor people eating rich people. There was just plain work. To be sure, some of it was supervised by evil bosses, and some of it was done by children. But there were still factories, and those factories still had workers and bosses. What went wrong?
Well, for one thing, the workers had just spent five years shooting and bombing each other. There were considerably fewer of them than there had been when Marx wrote Das Kapital.
But there was a bigger problem. The few workers that were left just weren’t interested in socialism; especially those who didn’t work in factories. The jobs they had were not great, and frankly their bosses weren’t that great either-but they were surviving. In some cases they were even thriving. Many of them had grown up in poverty, and fought bitterly to escape it. Biting the hand the fed them did not seem like a great idea. Marx was quite nonchalantly disowned by the very demographic he had claimed to speak for.
So a tiny cabal of German philosophers, certain of Marx’s veracity, decided on a different pathway to get his influence to the masses. Marx himself had waited for it to happen naturally. Lenin and Trotsky had brought it through a messy revolution.
Neither would work with the peoples of the West. Capitalism was too deeply ingrained in the collective psyche. The group of philosophers, known as the “Frankfurt School”, blamed this condition, naturally, on those who had suborned it: Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Company, A&P, Radio City Music Hall...the list goes on. There was no way they would be able to release society from the addictions it had created for itself. The whole system would have to come down. Only then could something new be built in it’s place.
The thinkers of the Frankfurt School were under no illusions that this would be an easy task. The destruction of five thousand years of tradition would not happen overnight, and it would not happen by itself.
The first step was to get people to not like their society-to see it the way the Frankfurt school did. Having been rejected by their original audience, the Frankfurt School thinkers needed a new proletariat. That hadn’t worked in the microcosm in which Marx had tried it. But, why, the thought occurred to them, stop with just one group? What if they could create many proletariats?
After all, history had given them plenty of other collective grievances and class struggles. The Civil War was only about six decades gone. The working poor in their arguments could be expanded to the poor in general, who could then be turned against the robber barons. And of course, the suffragettes were still embroiled in their struggle against the patriarchy.
So Herbert Markuse and his Frankfurt School companions set out to make their case. They began by advocating for the end of everything that seemed too “normal” to them: marriage, jobs, music, philosophy, art...if socialism hadn’t produced it, then it was evil. The very world around you, they would say today, is an illusion; a gilded cage, if not created, then at least aided and exploited, by those in power to keep you blinded to the fact that you were a serf, enslaved by a powerful elite who would always enjoy power and privilege at your expense, that you will never have access to.
And just who were these mysterious oppressors? That depended on who these new socialists were talking to. If you were poor, it was men like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and the bands of powerful corporate executives who followed them. If you were black, it was the whites who had enslaved your grandparents, and would have enslaved you if not for the brave progressives that had fought for the Thirteenth Amendment. (It was, in fact, Republicans who had fought for the Thirteenth Amendment-I’ll discuss the progressives’ chameleon-like ability to change political positions a bit later.) And if you were a woman, it was the men in your lives who had deceived you into marrying them, forced you into roles decided for you by society, against your will, and were routinely having their way with you at night.
These progressive thinkers possessed a unique ability to figure out what made you as an individual angry-to find your mental weak point, and then tell you a story that you could relate to; that pressed the right buttons. Then they would offer you their antidote to this oppression, which was always revolution, followed by Marxism.
Steinem and her misandrist followers were a product of this movement. The feminism of the 1960s, and the feminism of today, are not really feminist at all. They were just one of many disparate movements that had been co-opted by the progressives, and amalgamated into one big proletariat. No longer was socialism a workers’ movement that sought control of factories-it was now a struggle by anyone who had a grievance, against whoever had aggrieved them."

I have found generally that builders even very working class, as I once was, are rarely socialists and often they can't say why, but when I have effectively stated what you have done here, they ALWAYS agree.
WHY? Because builders know that even though it may be messy, dirty and often takes either a lot of muscle or machines BUT 'destruction' is always much quicker than re-building. As then the process which requires careful planning, choosing the best materials, ordering and receiving them, drawings (something I did as a young man), layout and marking and then the 'actual' construction over a much longer period of time than the very destruction of the old building.
Something later in my life achieving a degree I retrained as a teacher and the above I often used in debates with teachers and they simply could not comprehend the reality of my example why builders tend not to be socialists, coming back with the condescending attitude builders were not academically inclined and they had no idea of the evil of capitalism only concerned with making money. One thing I also noticed with most teachers, they rarely ever did their own DIY around the house when having the school holidays as I did, they always paid a builder, plumber, electrician etc to come in and do it for them.

I lived under socialism and not everything is as bad as they say. Not all socialism is the same. In my case, everyone was employed and everyone could solve the housing issue. Education was much better than in the West and more extensive. There were many top experts and very smart people. Family values came first. There was a lot of emphasis on the cultural advancement of people and we had a healthy society that was constantly progressing. The bad thing was that everything was centralized and you were never sure which fool could come to power. I would not recommend socialism to anyone, but in a situation where society is too liberalized, it would be good to take some time to restructure society and create responsible and valuable people without corruption, crime and all the negative phenomena in today's rich societies that have become slaves to money that has become God. Today we have a democratic system that has many flaws. I don't like some of that lobbying that is pure corruption. Strange laws are passed that are against life.
I didn't like Communism or some socialism because it can't work so that all people are equal. Someone is always selling a lie. Usually people forget that they were small and when they climb high in the hierarchy, they have no measure and honesty. That's why it's still a good democracy where you can serve a maximum of two mandates and then you have to retire.
