I met David in June of 20133 at a Meet and Greet in Atlantic City. This was a year after the 2012 Reunion tour, the tour where Love kicked Brian, Al, and David off of. In 2013, he was with Al, touring with Brian's band. I saw him again later that year on the combined Jeff Beck concerts. What a nice guy. I wish he had kept touring with Brian over the last decade.
I like David; a bona fide Beach Boy; he did a great job on their 50th anniversary tour as the de facto lead guitarist retaining the spirit and style of Carl even playing a Fender Jaguar
Dave, I finally found you, today. I'm 72 yrs. old and have always been a Beach Boys fan. You were on the front of my first Beach Boys album. And then, I lost track and you had disappeared when I started seeing pictures of the group in later years and I thought I was going crazy. I tried convincing myself that your looks had changed and you were still in the band, being one of the non-Wilson members. Now I know and it makes me smile. Thank you for telling your story and welcome back into my life.
Wow fantastic. David Marks is just a great guy with both feet on the ground. His recordings with Dave & The Marksmen and Moon are also great underated stuff. Which he could have commented a little about another great guy from those early days: Gary Usher !!!!
My understanding, is that Dennis Wilson, who was the only surfer in the band, was the one who came up with the idea to do surfer and hot rod songs. So in reality, there would have been no Beach Boys, without Dennis.
Yes, those are the activities Dennis was into, and he coaxed Brian into writing songs about them. So yes, it was Dennis who gave them the idea that launched them. IT was a disk jockey who gave them their name. They were calling themselves the Pendletones and if I remember correctly, a DJ named Russ Reagan heard the release of their first single, Surfin', and called them The Beach Boys.
Really like to see David Marks and hear him talk about this incredible history. But even though I am no fan of Bruce Johnston, he joined the band in 1965, NOT the late 60s as David said. Bruce came from money and he stays all about money today touring with Mike Love.
Weird how life turns out - he may not be as nice of a guy if he stayed in the group. Just too young - sadly introduced to alcohol/drugs at 14 - gosh I just hope he is happy and healthy
David is a walking/talking Beach Boys encyclopedia....an awesome humble guy and in my opinion the innovator of the "surf guitar sound". I'm so glad I got to see him on the 50th anniversary tour because he really is an original member of the Beach Boys. He was there playing lead on their first bunch of hits.
@@jm1922 He was neither "an innovator of the surf guitar sound (that was Dick Dale)," nor an original member of the Beach Boys. But he does seem to be a really nice guy.
People say that Pete Best termination from the Beatles was the worst career/life failure that has happened to a person in the music industry. I would put David Marks resignation from the Beach Boys as even worse since Pete Best did not have a choice in the matter. I know that David Marks was still a teenager but didn't his parents guide him not to give up a good thing? Once his own band failed any sensible person would have begged the Beach Boys for his former position in the band.
Well then, I guess you didn't know that he was a replacement for Al Jardine, but when Al rejoined the group, he became expendable. Since he also didn't want to get involved in Murry Wilson's toxic atmosphere, the only solution was to leave. So no, it was not comparable to Pete Best's situation in any way, which was a lazy comparison to start with.
@@mikeymutual5489 He wasn't "expendable". He actually had a major falling out in early August '63 with Murray Wilson and quit. His parents had him stay on until his contractual obligations were finished in early October of that year. Brian was already bugging out of shows (before the infamous first nervous breakdown) and having Al and David play shows together was the norm.
He's wrong about Bruce joining in the "early 70s/late 60s". He joined in April 1965, replacing Glen Campbell. It really was a very strange time to leave. We often hear of people leaving a band just before they cracked success, but to leave shortly after cracking it is regretful. But of course he was so very young back then that rationale didn't play any part in his decision.
Who knew there was a Jewish Beach Boy?eh At 50, I've been a fan since Bar-Mitzvah age. Up until having watched a 50th Anniversary docu via Tubi On-Demand, I would have never known there was another member in the band? Having seen the Surfin' USA video (featured in the docu) for the umpteenth time, it finally dawned on me: "Ah, there he is!" eh Why didn't I question who he was, and how on earth did Marks go unnoticed? The docu claims that he appeared on the 1st 5 albums. Wiki has him at 4.

Great to see David Marks still a super musician and great historian of the early days of the Beach Boys.

The Beach Boys are known by many as the Boys of Summer but to me they're the Good Old Boys of Rock and Roll. ❤😂

I can’t believe how young he was when they started. Can you imagine being 14 and having a top ten record? Wow.
That’s a really good book Lovely talent David LEE Marks
Great news that they found him, huge relief for his family etc.
Great Book !! Great Talent!!David Lee Marks!!
David is an outstanding surfin' lead guitar player. Would have been a great person to remain in the band.
I lived in Hawthorne by the airport too and loved it, especially down at the beach. Great years.
This is my future vacation Hawthorne California this is will be my vacation in the future
I love seeing David Marks speaking to all of people
I always thought David Marks left the Beach boys because Murray was a real a****** and he had enough of it
Great history ! Really interesting. ---------------Well done, Dave.
This is not good......This is GREAT!!!
Thank you Dacid great interview!!!

David Marks you are a great guy ever
David...!!! You should start a new band and call them (get this...) "The Hawthorn All Stars". With Chris Montez, You, and any of the Beach Boys...
David is more or less the catalyst which formed the Beach Boys unique style. 😅😊

They did fine without him...Brian was the beach boys and after awhile didn't even use them in the studio anyways

@@ms8596 Yet the band continued on perfectly well after David left, like I stated. Thank you for the history lesson anyway.
I think David has confused Al Jardine going on the road playin Bass instead of Brian with Glen Campbell.

He was not religious and only his father Elmer Marks was Jewish. His mother Jo Ann was an Italian Catholic. So technically David is not Jewish.
