He had an issue with lyrics on one song. Smile did not go unfinished because of Mike or anyone in the Beach Boys. It went unfinished because of Brian's mental state and nothing else.

Good post. The only correction needed is that Carl didn't quit the band until early 1981 and he came back in Spring 1982. Carl was still around when Bruce rejoined the group and stuck around through the Keepin' The Summer Alive album.
the heart and soul of the Beach Boys. Nothing was ever the same after his and Dennis' loss. Surprised at Carl's English accent in this interview...he's imitating the interviewer, who is English?
English accent? I don't hear it - but then, I'm English. Yes, people often unconsciously modify their speech to 'meet in the middle' with the person they are speaking to, some more than others.
Interesting that he said that they didn't want to do anything else for awhile. They may hang tight for a couple of years. Assuming he was talking about recording another album, he was right!

Capitol Records was bad for many artists---most notably the two "BEA" bands on the label---the Beatles and the Beach Boys. They made insane demands on some of their bands, like three albums a year, which for the most creative among us, is almost impossible.
