As a person who suffers with mental illness, I have to say that hearing the thoughts Dennis had on it made me feel so much better. There’s still so much stigma surrounding mental illness, yet he spoke of it with such gentle understanding. The world lost a great man when it lost Dennis Wilson. You can hear the love, caring and understanding in his voice. And he didn’t seem to care about the fame as much as he cared about his brothers and making music. You have to love a man like that.
Brian knew how and where to use Dennis vocals in each song. He didn't get a lot of notes to sing but the ones he got he sang well. All the Wilson bros had a resonance in their voices that was special. Do you wanna dance is one of the best covers ever and Brian knew who should sing lead

Just like he said in this interview, Brian Wilson, just like anyone else, had to help himself out of his run. Issues of that magnitude aren't usually overcome unless someone decides to take control of whatever issues are affecting their own life in my opinion (whatever that's worth lol)
The Wilson's cared for each other very much. When The Beach Boys did Knebworth in 1980. You could see the love they had for each other when it came to Surfer Girl.
Who knows what could have happen if Dennis was still here.. God, his music was legendary... He really had a way of pulling your emotions with his songs.

Pete Fornatale passed away several years ago. He was a Music professor at St. John's University on Long Island. He was a DJ on WNEW FM the MOST progressive radio station in NYC and in the country. Surrounded by other DJs who considered themselves "Cool" they refused to play BB music, instead catering to Led Zepplin, Beatles, Who, etc. Pete Fornatale was the ONLY DJ in NYC at that time who would still play BB music and he would play cuts from current BB albums of the time. Years after, before he passed away he still touted Brian Wilson as a creative genius, clearly stating that BW by himself was more talented that the Beatles, as a whole.
Perfect synopsis. I listened to Pete all the time. Hatred guys like Scott Muni and Alison Steele who thought only THEY knew who was cool. Jann Wenner, publisher of Rolling Stone, actually banned the Magazine from writing about the BB or reviewing their albums. FJW.
Just like his musical output, I believe that Brian's mental problems happened a generation before people were really able to fully understand and comprehend it. It also seems to me that Dennis' understanding and mentality on trying to help Brian's mental illness in this interview is wise and a few decades ahead of his time. Dennis ruled super hard.

As a BEACH BOYS fan, I alway's wish he was still here with us and it would be great just to sit next to Dennis Wilson and hear him talk about anything that has nothing to do with THE BEACH BOYS and he knows about that...and talk away like we knew each other and just talk about anything in mind! I visited the place where he drowned and put some beautiful flowers in the water and said a prayer & hope he's doing okay up there with his mom. I love his solo album Pacific Ocean Blue, and its still not open and have a CD my friend gave me and the Pacific Ocean Blue is hung up in a picture frame and its hanging in my living room!

It was the age of "Tough Love will teach the Addict" rather than actual support and involvement and love, some still do this, had anyone known esp the managment that over saw that act that Dennis would die and not get the help he knew he needed things could have been different. But The 70s and early 80s was such a frazzled time for so many in the rock scene.
The only way to help an alcoholic/drug addict is to get out of his way & let him hit bottom, and then seeks help. Then & only then can you help him with love & support.
I'm rather surprized to here Dennis speak of 20/20 as an embarrassment. His 4 songs on the album are strong, and I think the entire album is great, maybe better than other albums of that era such as friends, & wild honey. Anyways, we miss you Dennis. He was perhaps the best performer of the band and most entertaining on stage. Thanks
'20/20' was the album where Brian chose to step down from his leadership of The Beach Boys, and the album on which the band had to find songs from the previous three years that Brian had half completed for them to complete to make it look as if he was them leading. it was the album on which Brian's lack of SMiLE and therefore loss of confidence was made clear to the public.
The thing that boggles my mind is how anyone can idolize a band on the same level as the Beach Boys, because there never was another band on that level with them. The brilliance of Brian Wilson and Dennis as well has never been matched and never will be. Those 5 years (63-68) where Brian was in control were the greatest, most creative years in rock history; it's interesting how the whole "scene" if you will crumbled after that, not just the band but the whole mainstream rock culture.

Let's not forget Carl - such an angelic voice. Carl's singing helped bring so much of Brian's greatest music alive (songs like 'God Only Knows" and "Surfs Up").
I love how the Wilson brothers loved each other so much. They always expressed love, admiration and respect for each other. Such a wonderful thing to see...and such a sad ending. Man ...I LOVE the Beach Boys. AL Jardine and Bruce Johnston fit right in with them in beautiful spirit. At 2:37, Fornatale threw a softball Q, probably hoping DW would at least partially blame Mikey for the less-commercial direction Brian wanted to go; "a fight for control to get back to a hit-making formula." DW didn't take the bait, despite the well-known rift between DW & ML.
In the mid 70s (74-77) when the Beach Boys were back on top commercially, that new re-emergence all came from the nostalgia of their heyday and its a shame cuz they had made so many great albums from Pet Sounds to Holland and only in the UK did those albums get the credit they deserved. Wild Honey was a phenomenal album, as was Sunflower and Holland. Friends had its moments as well as Surfs Up; the Beach Boys never made a "weak" album til after Love You; after that they never had a strong one.
Dennis sounds like a genuine sweetheart. I can see why the ladies throbbed for him. It's a real shame the way he died. RIP Dennis Wilson. RIP Beach Boys.

i guess you have to bear the interviewer's questions/tone in order to hear denny's speak. so as much as some hear an interrogation, i'll take it in order to hear denny's voice and perspectives on Brian and the band. incidentally, i think there are a lot of good songs on "20/20".
Dennis hit his head, got knocked out and drowned. This is like asking why no one was there to save some one killed in an auto accident. It was a mistake to dive without anyone present, I don't see how others can be blamed for not being present at that particular moment

BITCHEN.

It was done by members of the Satan Slaves motorcycle gang, and just after one of the bikers bit the black guys ear off, and he was member of the Black Panthers. This incident occurred in June 1969 at The Indian Masa, which is located across Santa Susana Pass from Spahn Ranch and just above Devil’s Canyon, about a mile and a half from Spahn Ranch. The next night member of the Satan Slaves took his body from The Indian Masa and dumped it deep inside Griffith Park. Both the LAPD and LASO knew about what happen, and although they found the body his death was never reported in the media. No one was ever arrested, and Manson did not find out that LAPD had found the black guys body until a few days after he was questioned at Inyo County PD by LAPD, which occurred immediately after Manson was arrested at Barker Ranch on October 12, 1969.
Typical interviewer. Maybe a good deejay, but what about questions for Dennis about his growing role in the band as songwriter/producer, starting in '68? He's promoting his solo album, so how about a backstory to that? Will Dennis perform live to promote the album? What's next with solo/band work? Such a lost opportunity.

Brian was a musical Genius. It's been said that geniuses often suffer with extreme mental problems, or a self-destructive fatal flaw. Music geniuses such as Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Freddie Mercury, R. Kelly etc.
I agree, this Pete guy is a jerk, and his voice is annoying too! Why would you call Dennis to come all the way from California to NYC, just to talk about Brian's past?! I'm glad Dennis eventually brought the conversation to the present. If you wanted to talk about Brian, then you should've had Brian there, and the joke is, he interviewed Brian 3 years prior to this. And then River Song plays after the interview was over. Dennis had an album coming out but all this guy wanted to do was talk about Brian...I know Denny loved and admired his brother, but if I was him I would've been pissed.
Brian Grant Yea probably lol. It's still annoying to me that the guy spent 12 minutes talking about Brian and nothing else. It's bad enough that the band didn't take Dennis' music seriously, but then when POB became moderately successful, they got mad (Mike and Al Jardine in particular).
To all the dummies out there who consider Mike Love to be the root of evil, they should listen to this interview very carefully. Dennis clearly says that not one member of the group was concerned with the musical direction around the Pet Sounds/Smile era (proof: he was there, you were not). Mike's admitted he'd had an issue with a couple of Van Dyke's lyrics, but it would make sense for the group's primary lyricist to push back and offer criticism. I'm sure said dummies will hear this and have the cognitive dissonance to ignore what they've heard, but facts are facts.

Dennis was very sharp and rational. The Landy episode would have come to an abrupt end if he was still around, at the time.

Dennis was the only one in the group, who really understood Brian´s unbelievable talents (without envy). (So did the Wrecking group).
I think Al, Mike, Bruce, David and Carl understood his talent. Everyone did. Mike, with all his legal issues, always recognized Brian’s talent.

I don't think it was the album, but I think it was 'Never Learn Not to Love' that embarrassed Dennis.

I had a brother like that but he died in 2000. He was only 31. I would give my life so he could live again.
Amazing how Brian, with all his demons, drug use and issues outlived Dennis and Carl.

i guess you have to bear the interviewer's questions/tone in order to hear denny's speak. so as much as some hear an interrogation, i'll take it in order to hear denny's voice and perspectives on Brian and the band. incidentally, i think there are a lot of good songs on "20/20".

By 1976 Brian almost sounded like Dennis. Brian got saved by why didn't Dennis? where was everybody when Dennis needed them the most?
Dennis hit his head, got knocked out and drowned. This is like asking why no one was there to save some one killed in an auto accident. It was a mistake to dive without anyone present, I don't see how others can be blamed for not being present at that particular moment

I think he's talking about his alcohol and drug use. Dennis had some demons of his own in his later years. He was fired from the band for a while.
You can't "fix" people. He was, apparently, impossible to live with and completely resistant to attempts to help him.

the BEACHBOYS our claim to fame here in the U.S. when i got to california it was exactly like what the BEACHBOYS portrayed in there music. i bought myself a 1961 chevy convertible. white with a black rag top, threw my guitar in the back seat & split for the beach & i were in heaven with the BEACHBOYS on my 8 - track. It was done by members of the Satan Slaves motorcycle gang, and just after one of the bikers bit the black guys ear off, and he was member of the Black Panthers. This incident occurred in June 1969 at The Indian Masa, which is located across Santa Susana Pass from Spahn Ranch and just above Devil’s Canyon, about a mile and a half from Spahn Ranch. The next night member of the Satan Slaves took his body from The Indian Masa and dumped it deep inside Griffith Park. Both the LAPD and LASO knew about what happen, and although they found the body his death was never reported in the media. No one was ever arrested, and Manson did not find out that LAPD had found the black guys body until a few days after he was questioned at Inyo County PD by LAPD, which occurred immediately after Manson was arrested at Barker Ranch on October 12, 1969.

Typical interviewer. Maybe a good deejay, but what about questions for Dennis about his growing role in the band as songwriter/producer, starting in '68? He's promoting his solo album, so how about a backstory to that? Will Dennis perform live to promote the album? What's next with solo/band work? Such a lost opportunity.

Brian was a musical Genius. It's been said that geniuses often suffer with extreme mental problems, or a self-destructive fatal flaw. Music geniuses such as
Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Freddie Mercury, R. Kelly etc.
Mike Love has a better claim to musical genius than R. Kelly.

I agree, this Pete guy is a jerk, and his voice is annoying too! Why would you call Dennis to come all the way from California to NYC, just to talk about Brian's past?! I'm glad Dennis eventually brought the conversation to the present. If you wanted to talk about Brian, then you should've had Brian there, and the joke is, he interviewed Brian 3 years prior to this. And then River Song plays after the interview was over. Dennis had an album coming out but all this guy wanted to do was talk about Brian...I know Denny loved and admired his brother, but if I was him I would've been pissed.

Brian Grant Yea probably lol. It's still annoying to me that the guy spent 12 minutes talking about Brian and nothing else. It's bad enough that the band didn't take Dennis' music seriously, but then when POB became moderately successful, they got mad (Mike and Al Jardine in particular).

To all the dummies out there who consider Mike Love to be the root of evil, they should listen to this interview very carefully. Dennis clearly says that not one member of the group was concerned with the musical direction around the Pet Sounds/Smile era (proof: he was there, you were not). Mike's admitted he'd had an issue with a couple of Van Dyke's lyrics, but it would make sense for the group's primary lyricist to push back and offer criticism. I'm sure said dummies will hear this and have the cognitive dissonance to ignore what they've heard, but facts are facts.
Hal Blaine said he did 99.9% drumming on Beach Boys LP's. So I guess Dennis was the tour drummer.

He championed his music for a bit. Obviously, this was before anyone knew Manson was a maniac. And in fairness, Manson had potential as a songwriter.

Both of 'em cost about the same so get the taters. I thank the taters are actually a little less cost. Taste-wise, they's no contest. Taters win. No matter how ye fix 'em, boiled, baked, fried. Boy, they's good. Carrots are so-so. So buy the taters.
I am ashamed on the part of Dennis blaming Brian’s masterpiece Pet Sounds on drugs. Whose drugs, Dennis? You were the most stoned Beach Boy of all. You got yourself drowned while drunk on alcohol. What is your musical legacy?
I'm rather surprized to here Dennis speak of 20/20 as an embarrassment. His 4 songs on the album are strong, and I think the entire album is great, maybe better than other albums of that era such as friends, & wild honey. Anyways, we miss you Dennis. He was perhaps the best performer of the band and most entertaining on stage. Thanks
