Knife Restoration [Very Rusty Old Bayonet]
- An old rusty knife is the object in this restoration video with ASMR. The bayonet was in a very bad condition and I had to do a lot of rework, respectively restoration here. I had to remove rust (with electrolysis), weld, grind, file, drill, polish, turn on the lathe, glue and more.
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The knife was extremely rusty, so I used rust remover and a screwdriver to remove the coarse rust and electrolysis to remove the rest. Subsequently, I welded and ground the very deep pitting. I continued this restoration by hardening the blade and grinding it with sandpaper to 1200 grit and then polishing it. I also had to restore the handle for the most part by welding and grinding it. The new handle scales are made of oak, which were perfectly matched. For this I had to turn small bolts of brass on the lathe. Finally, everything was glued together and the shiny bayonet was ready.
▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: pin punch, hammer, rust remover, pliers, welding machine, welding helmet, slag hammer, files, wire brush, propane torch, sandpaper, laboratory power supply, lathe, angle grinder, belt grinder, two-component glue

wow really begging btw idk how you find rust in this stage like people just let them rust for the vid?
Restoration wasn’t really my thing but these videos changed my mind, it’s now one of my fav things to watch!
Thank you very much! 🤗
Tbh same
So true
Next, you should try restoring something yourself. I have and its one of the greatest feelings seeing something that looks like junk turned back into a piece of art.
Basically you're not into something until you are
My girlfriend just asked me why I was looking at a knife. I told her it was because I have an obsession with shiny things. When I looked at the video I was like: “shineeeeee!”
🤣🤣🤣
She probably say “it better shine like my future engagement ring ca-Ching!! Spend money and by me a ring you doofus!” Congrats on the wedding
🤣 🤣 For some reason this reminded me of Goblin Master Blacksmith (Bethmoran) from Hellboy.
i'm not very good at reading english but it must have been a very good and funny story/tale!
Maybe. Your a crow
When I’m bored I watch these types of videos and there satisfying to to watch
And see how very very old things like this go through restoration and coming out new is pretty cool
🤗🤗
wow
I don't think it's a bayonet. It doesn't seem to have a mechanism by which you could attach it to a musket or a rifle. It actually looks more like a Bauernwehr knife, and the bit protruding from the side of the guard is called a Nagel (german for "nail"), and as far as I know, was indeed used for hand protection.
You are right, good observation!
That's true and the guy in the video just ruined it by mutilating the nagel and the blade
This is the definition of
“Trust the process”
I think it’s important to take a rare tool, car, etc as found with rust and dirt, do the nitty-gritty stuff like chipping and scrubbing the dirt and rust ( as our ancestors did) away rather than going right away to sandblasting. That is why I love your channel so much! Back to the basis. Thanks beautiful jobs
Ok, thank you for your feedback!
I always thought that once something was fully covered in rust, it was too damaged to save. Thanks to your channel, I won’t be throwing out old things as soon as I find them
Restoration is a perfectly valid school of magic!
I love these kind of restoration videos, they are intriguing and satisfying
Thank you for the awesome video! It's surprising to me that only one edge is sharpened in this bayonet, since two would make more sense for stabbing! But I'm no weapon pro 😅
I’m telling you this guy is secretly amassing a low tech army
I love that you went to the effort of welding low spots higher to TRULY restore the thing. So many channels just try to add a polish to the pitted thing making it look like mirrored swiss cheese! Excellent work!
Thank you very much for your great Feedback! 🐢
Incredible work, that heavy rust removal is so satisfying to watch! 👌🏼
Mate absolutely love your videos and never cease to be amazed with the end result. Was wondering if you’ve done any work with production of weapons / armours for reenactments? You certainly look very comfortable and skilled. Subscribed!
Thank you very much!
I watch these types of videos at night to relax and unwind it helps immensely after a long day
Nice to see I'm not the only person who uses a screwdriver blade as a rust chisel.
😅🐢
You deserve more recognition! Your arts are absolutely stunning. New subscriber. 👍

Que incrível!! O seu trabalho é maravilhoso! Amazing! Your work is wonderful! From Brasil! 🙂
Muito obrigado! 😍🐢🐢🤩
Not a bad job. The merge of old and tech was beautiful.
What a top bloke this guy is, really inspiring stuff.
Great job. I know many hours were spent restoring the bayo. Thank you for the great video.
Thank you very much!
I think the pitting adds to the overall good look of the knife.
Also on a side note, the knife edge can be honed a bit more.
Bayonets are piercing weapons. Their knife edge is really sharp.
Overall another excellent video from FSR :)
You go do it then if your gonna hate on their way
@@Fallwithme ...that is just normal feedback sandwiched between two compliments. Do you also call it hate when a teacher tells a kid about how their essay could have been better? Or when someone asks for a salt shaker at a restaurant because they prefer a little more seasoning? Or when being asked to comment your Python code better so coworkers have an easier time dealing with it?
Not necesarily, the tip of a Mosin-Nagant's bayonet is basically just a flathead screwdriver that you can disassemble the gun with. Not sharp but enough of a point to run it through someone.
@@naikyou great breakdown. Funny how the original comment is seen as "hate". The religion of the time is "praise every thing I do without question, otherwise you're a bigot/hater".
@@Ulysses1994XF04 is it a Mosin-Nagant bayonet? I can't tell.
Restoration seems like the definition of ’Trust the process’
anyone else watch these at like 2 in the morning and think about the major questions of life? me too!
Nice work 👍 looks like you might have spent a lot of time on that. Turned out very cool.
That's right, that was a lot of hours of work! Thanks...
Ppl who weld and grind all the pitting r true heros 🙏
I liked how it still had some pitting in the blade. Gives character.
Que trabajo! Quedó genial, muy lindo.
i really love the sounds in your videos and the restoring its the best videos and sounds ive ever seen in my life forever youre the best video maker
Thank you very much! 🤗🐢
Ever since I got a recommended video from this channel, I now watch these at bedtime to help me sleep.
Thank you very much! 🐢🤩
@@ForgottenShineRestoration No problem! ^^
If a bayonet could smile, this one would have a huge one.
Parabens!!!! Ficou show seu trabalho!!!!
anyone else get flash banged on the welding lol keep up the good work love the vids
your videos are the sole source of joy in my life
Very good. Many details were revealed, very inspiring for the recovery of objects considered lost. I've already recovered some pieces, but never from such a bad situation.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much for your great Feedback!

Idk why but something about blackened steel seems so cool to me
Increíble transformación de Bayoneta, sos un genio 👏

such things are not cleaned, it is a monument
now that i think about it, how does this guy have so many old items to restore
His videos makes me relax and I love his videos it’s amazing
That was a lot of work. Looks great. What setting did you use on the welder? I am about to weld pits on a blade thinner than this and I am a little worried about burning through the blade. Cheers!
Thank you for your feedback! It was very difficult to find a good setting, because the material is different thickness everywhere, you do not know if you just weld in a hole, the surface quality is poor due to the rust! I can only tell you I also fell through the sheet and try it best, start from the bottom ;)
Great restoration! That knife was so far gone, and you were able to bring it back
Thank you very much!
I love it. The process and the product.
i love how all the restoration vids always have a little cute aspect
I love the sounds i feel really good watching your videos. Amazing job, congratulations ❤️❤️❤️

watching cannot be denied. Normally I was supposed to watch, but you can't deny watching it. I RECOMMEND
This goes insanely hard.
wow dude!
Your video is great, I'm watching it with pleasure. It's like a documentary, thank you
Thank you, too!
Not a documentary because documentary’s are boring and this was really entertaining to watch 😂
I’m convinced the turtle has been doing more work off camera. He’s too skilled. ❤️
why do you have the best looking rusty knifes and axes this is my second video i remember and you have the best looking rusty old things
Normally the great limitation with trying to restore rusty steel items is that one can remove the rust, but that also removes the steel from the item. It is interesting how now one can rebuilt (not just remove) metal by using a welder to add steel back for a more complete restoration.
yes, but remember that the added steel is not fully hardenable. It is mild steel as opposed to high carbon steel. So it looks nice and can cut veggies, but be careful when relying on it to hold up to real damage.
Boa tarde
Muito obrigado!
Wow. That duck knows how to make an impressive handle. Kudos. 👍
I love watching the knife from the rust well I’m bored watching other videos. And this so satisfying to watch
Since this is a bayonet, I really would've liked to see you actually test it in ways that put it to a real test at the end instead of just cutting a tomato. Also, what are your (or anyone else's) thoughts on performing so much welding on the blade? At the very least I think you should've normalized the whole blade in a furnace for an hour or two (~900C/1650F) after the welding to get a (more) uniform microstructure prior to your heat treatment, but I understand if you don't have access to equipment like that. I'm afraid that because there's so much welded material on the blade edge that if you ever tried to actually use it for its intended purpose or put it through a 'Forged In Fire' style testing it would shatter pretty quickly or immediately roll an edge.
Do you know how old this might be? How'd you come into possession it? Do you have any idea what kind of firearm this would've fit on the end of? I'm always curious of the history and how other restorers wind up in possession of the things they restore!
Keep at it! -CR
Thank you for the detailed feedback!
Yes, unfortunately I do not yet have such equipment available and yes it is a very difficult issue that the blade is now "destroyed" in the metal structure, but you can always make it up in due course.
Unfortunately have no info at all where the bayonet was found or how old it is. I have also searched for a very long time on which weapon this bayonet was once put, but unfortunately I could not find anything at all... I fear soon that it is not from the first or second world war, but for that again condition would be too good, right?
@@ForgottenShineRestoration I'm hopeless on identifying firearms and their accessories, so hopefully another viewer than shed some light on it! But that amount of corrosion is certainly possible if it is indeed from either of the world wars. 80-100+ years of environmental exposure can really take its toll!
@@ForgottenShineRestoration Hi. Hopefully you won't be using this blade in the way it was intended (!!) so heat treating it in this case is not so important but if you ever want to do it without a proper oven, you can easily build a homemade forge out of bricks, dirt, hardwood charcoal, and a hair dryer. I build it in a wheelbarrow to move it around! If you want to see it, take a look at how I did it in the axe restoration video on my channel. It's really easy and it worked really well. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip, I'll take a look at that!
I’m always curious of the history behind pieces as well. What stories could these old items share

So satisfying when you remove the coarse dirt 🤤
Turtle is the best recurring character
Great video! Very satisfying restoration
Do you know approximately what year it manufactured? I’m also curious how it came to be in your possession
Thanks for the video
Ciao Emily.
I think I saw the turtle 5 times, including the time tell us to watch for it
It was possibly manufactured hundreds of years ago, and it isnt a bayonet, its a german fighting knife known as a bauernwehr, used in the late middle ages and renaissance
Very nice completed product. It's too bad you had to lose so much of the blade to make it look so good. Do you any idea what kind of weapon would have used this type of a bayonet? Thanks for sharing. 😁👍🇨🇱🇺🇸
Thank you, too! Unfortunately I do not know which weapon this bayonet belongs to
it is not a bayonet, it is a German knife called Peasant Defense.
That's a Bauernwehr from medieval germany, not a bayonet and he ruined it
As part of pre-deployment training we had to do a weapons refresher and the entire class was people about to deploy. So the instructor was showing us everything that can be affixed to the end of our M-16s. He showed us a bayonet and told us "If the person in charge says 'You're gonna need this!", Know you are royally screwed.
So in that vein, I saw you cut it shorter and immediately thought, "Ah yes, let's make our close combat weapons even shorter! This will only end well..." The restoration looks great, and my bosses have always hated me for being a smart ass!
Somehow you're right, of course, and hopefully no one will ever use it for his real purpose again ...🐢
This guy's work is so much satisfying that I will manually rust anything just for his restoration video.
😅😅🐢
It's a shame a section of the blade had to go but the result was absolutely beautiful!
Thank you!
That one Immortal German Soldier who's still living to this day: *so ZATS vhere my Bayonet vent...*
Lol
These videos make me fall asleep so fast
The sweetness of the turtle thing🤣🤣
🥰🥰🐢
Excellent work! 👏🏻
I always wonder two things when I watch your videos: 1. Where do you get all these rusty and old items from?
And 2. What do you do after the restoration? Do you sell them or do you have them in a display case at home?
I look daily on all Internet sites where you can buy something and there you will quickly find. I keep the items and put them on my shelf, no one is allowed to touch them let alone use them. 😂
5:43 I love how this legendary man encourage us to stay with thjs video 😌
I wish I had this bayonet attached to my M1 Garand!
Excellent work! Hands of gold
Thank you very much! 🐢
That's not a bayonet, it's a german medieval bauernwehr. It is a fighting knife for peasants
It's very relaxing watching your videos. I would be interested to know how many man hours you put into these projects as well as some detail of the objects such as thier age and where you found it. Keep up the good work.
Tons of hours have gone into each project, where exactly the items come from I can't track because I buy them on Ebay....
Amazing work on the blade. It almost looked unsalvageable with the corrosion. And I think turtle appeared six times.
Thank you very much! Unfortunately you have overlooked turtle 2x...😂
@@ForgottenShineRestorationgary is rite tho .-.
Minutely taken care while restoring. What a great job.
Congratulations.
Thank you very much!
It's amazing that there is any salvageable material
The end state is very good looking, and I like it overall, but it’s a long stretch to call this a restoration.
Indeed. It was remade into a different knife, not restored to what it once was.
15:24 - I've watched well over 100 of these videos on a bunch of different channels WAITING for someone to do this! 😆 It's a tiny detail but it's like the only thing I know, which, admittedly, isn't ALL that much, that I haven't seen.
This was so satisfying to watch! Very interesting
These videos are so satisfying! You are good in restorating things!
Thank you! 🐢
