The gold electroplating was a cool little extra! I'd recommend shaving down that handle considerably more - the chunky, square handle has got to feel like a nightmare to hold in your hand 😱
There’s absolutely nothing better than watching your phenomenal videos on a cold day. Just the absolute care, dedication and quality you put into your restoration is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face
This was an amazing restoration! The handle did look as if it would be uncomfortable to hold, but it was amazingly decorated! You have a new subscriber!
I was so with you until the last few minutes. I guess this is more of an art piece than a tool, which is fine, but not for me. You will probably forget more knowledge about crafting and restoration than I'll ever know, so I won't pretend to be an expert, but it drives me crazy to watch people put these razor sharp, super delicate bevels on cleavers like they're a paring knife. And to go through all that work and leave the handle a massive rectangle? It seems like you've got some pretty big hands so maybe it works for you, but man that ending was so anticlimactic.
Yeah I’ve seen a few of these videos and he tends to make the handles big and bulky, which I find very unsatisfying. Amazing work pretty much everywhere else but those handles always frustrate me lol
I agree but at the same time it probably takes almost a week to complete and it'll probably be very fustrating to use a small handle then it breaks And it probably fits him best so at the same time I disagree with you😵
Interesting handle choice there. Almost looks like it’d be fairly uncomfortable to hold. And Thats a very neat way of applying a gold plating! Side note, turtle is my favorite recurring character of this series

This is so so amazing and different from other createors' content, the best way I could put this is that it feels like an itch finally getting scratched.
Really, really good job. I always like how it goes from a rusty piece of junk to something that could potentially become a persons favorite item to use. The handle still looks a bit bulky but other than that great job.I’m a new subscriber but I watch ur vids all the time and today I forgot I wasn’t subbed to u. Keep up the great work!
I would 100% buy this for my partner, we collect knives and SHES into really pretty decorative ones while im into more historical and unique ones, but I think she would love this as a art piece lol, 10/10 beautiful work
I'm curious to know how much of that pitting was there before using that liquid rust remover and how much of it was cause BY the liquid rust remover. Also, what is that liquid rust remover made of?
That is an oxidation layer that was formed during the heating of the steel. Also called 'scale'. It's very brittle and tends to flake off during quenching. Perfectly normal but not something you'd ever want to leave on the steel for a knife like this. You can wrap the blade in steel foil or use an inert gas furnace to minimize oxidation during heat treatments.
@@CatalystRestorations That's cool! Thanks for answering! And the quenching is to soften or harden the steel? Cool it slow to make it softer and cool it fast to harden it?
@@Scott_G It technically depends on what type of steel you are dealing with, but in general the faster you cool (quench) the harder the steel. Quenched steel is usually very brittle though (good strength, but can't absorb a lot of energy before breaking, AKA material toughness ), so after quenching you usually heat it back up again (lower temperature this time, called tempering) to soften it up just a bit to keep most of the strength but also improve the toughness and give you the best of both worlds!
First one of your vids that I’ve seen. Very nice restoration and the polishing then gold plating was phenomenal. I think the wood and brass that you chose for the handle are great but it looks kind of bulky and unfinished. It’s still a great cleaver. You have a new subscriber.
These videos are so cool and relaxing to watch. I think it is amazing how you restore items that appear in such harsh conditions and make them even better than they were in their prime! Keep up the fantastic work! And I hope all is well!

What an amazing transformation, The blade is a fantastic now, Alas the handle, It looked unfinished and uncomfortable but that’s my opinion an obviously I’m no expert, So how come you didn’t copy the original handle?
It's a good job, But the handle of this cleaver does not look so good, In my point of view if it will be round handled would look more beautiful. The Original handle was also round.
A lot of people talking shit about the handle... I have seen a few of your videos and know that if you wanted this handle to look different, you would have made it different. I like the square look. Fantastic job 👍
Damn. I was sure that handle would be too big but actually seeing you hold it, it was actually seeming like a nice handle. Though, you do seem to big-ish hands so maybe those with small hands might have had a problem. I'm glad it looked so cool and looked actually nice to hold!
Please continue your wonderful work some folks love to add what they think needs to be done, please don't listen Stay the course and do it your way THANK YOU !!
I often wonder in your Blades/ Knives/ Cleavers restoration, you do a single tone edge finish. In future videos could we see 2 tone finishing (acid etching/ clay baking/ etc). Thanks for another great vid :)
I applaud you for using Osage Orange. I make staffs h canes & this is my preferred medium. A shame you didn't have a more Orange heart wood. It is really beautiful.
Finally - a restoration video that actually gets rid of the pitting!!
The gold electroplating was a cool little extra! I'd recommend shaving down that handle considerably more - the chunky, square handle has got to feel like a nightmare to hold in your hand 😱
It doesn't actually feel that bad ...

I can understand the inappropriate bevel to play up the sharpness for RUclips, but there's no excuse for that godawful block of wood for a handle.

The blade came up remarkably well considering how pitted and rusty it was. I agree that the handle looks a little unrefined.
