Lamp Restoration [Easy Removing Patina From Brass, Sandblasting]

  • In this restoration of the old rusty lamp, I use simple means (flour, salt, vinegar) to remove the patina from the brass. In this project I also show you how I remove the rust from the parts by sandblasting, but my tasks also include sanding, welding, painting, filling, cleaning, polishing and working on the lathe. You can find out whether the lamp lights up again at the end in this video!
    ▶ What did I do ?! ◀
I removed the rust from the old lamp by sandblasting. A hole was drilled in the base of the lamp, which I welded shut again, as the hole made no sense to me. After all the unevenness had been filled with filler, I sprayed the parts with spray paint. The frame is made of brass, which was covered with a layer of patina. I removed the patina with simple means (flour, salt and vinegar) - this works very well. These parts were then polished. I washed, sanded and polished the remaining small parts. Immediately after reassembly, a light went on for me too ...
    ▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: Rust remover spray, combination pliers, side cutters, screwdriver, wrench, sandblasting cabin, corundum abrasive, pin punch, hammer, angle grinder, multi-function tool, milling attachment, copper, welding machine, welding helmet, filler, Playing card, spatula, sandpaper (various grits), sandpaper file, isopropanol, cleaning cloth, spray paint, adhesive tape, knife, flour, salt, vinegar, spoon, cling film, washing-up liquid, brush, polishing bench, polishing paste, lathe, file

I have searched a bit more about the lamp you have there and here is what I found:
Its a Model Matador 2768 Table Lamp made by Christian Dell for Bur Bunte & Remmler (BUR) in England during the 30's. Looks like you found quite a jackpot there, these lamps are selling in worse condition for about 500€.
    I really enjoyed your video.❤

Is anyone able to explain why this project didn't need a base coat of paint? Does it have to do with the type of metal?

    Beautiful work as always.
But also everyone should know that mixing vinegar and baking soda does nothing as a cleaning agent. When you mix an acid and a base, they basically cancel each other out; when you mix vinegar and baking soda, what your left with is water and a type of salt called sodium acetate (and sodium acetate can actually CORRODE brass and cause stress cracking). The reason the mixture seems to work on brass is because of any residual vinegar after all the baking soda got converted (if the ratio was actually a perfect 1:1 there’d be no residual vinegar and it wouldn’t help in removing brass tarnish at all).
Next time just use plain vinegar.
