Hammer Restoration [With Resin Eye]

  • When I restored the old rusty hammer head, I had to soft anneal, Sandblasting, grind, file, harden, hand sand and polish the metal. The hammer handle I made new, for this I used ash. For good measure, I filled the eye of the hammer with resin, which added a lot to the look. Please also note that this video is not only to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and unwind from everyday life!
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ What did I do ?! ◀
The old, rusty hammer head was already heavily rusted, which could be seen from the pitting. To remove the rust, I decided to use the process of electrolysis. Soft annealing allowed me to work the hammer head better because the surface was no longer so hard. To do this, I heated it to 700 °C and let it cool slowly. In the next step, I ground, sandblasted, polished and painted the hammer head. It was also hardened again at 900°C and tempered three times at 200°C. The hammer handle was made on the lathe, rubbed with linseed oil varnish and the hammer eye was filled with resin. Now the old rusty hammer shines again in its "Forgotten Shine"!
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: Wire brush, laboratory power pack, salt, scrap metal, brush, wire, string, side cutters, hardening furnace, forging pliers, belt sander, file, sandpaper, multifunction tool, milling pencil, sandblasting cabinet, corundum as blasting medium, immersion heater, oil, oven, polishing stand, polishing paste, knife, adhesive tape, spray paint, isopropanol, lathe, chisel, saw, wood glue, pin punch, resin, linseed oil varnish.

Yet another broken bit of metal turned once again into a useful and beautiful tool. 💚 I loved watching the electrolysis (that eroded bit of metal left over at the end was wild!), annealing is always fascinating (I temper chocolate for baking and cooking, but it's nowhere near as interesting), and a lathe was involved (you have to love a machine that could make a copy of itself). Add in the Turtle cameos, and it was utter perfection. Please keep Turtle out of the oven; we are not looking forward to watching you eat baked terrapin!
Thank you for another wonderful restoration!

Thanks for the specifications on temperatures. As a hobbyist knife sharpener I sometimes worry that using a sanding belt might ruin the heat treatment of a knife. I use a very crude "Does it burn my finger?" test. If it doesn't, I guess it's not above any critical temperature, probably less than 100 C.

Forbidden bread! "It's a lot tougher than I thought it would turn out, and the flavor isn't quite what I would have wanted. The oven was set at quite a high temperature. Perhaps turning the oven down, using wheat flour with a yeast leavening, more than just salt as flavoring, and leaving out all of the iron might improve the dough?"
