For those curious, this blade started life as specifically a billhook machete - note the exaggerated curve at the end. The cutting edge of such a knife would face the same direction as the hook, and was meant for chopping woody plants, mostly for hedging and cutting the side shoots from branches. By transforming it into a bunka (a Japanese kitchen knife which has since been overtaken in popularity by the santoku), Forgotten Shine has effectively flipped the edge to the reverse side of the original manufacture. I do agree with another commenter that the final handle on this one looks uncomfortable to hold. Authentic bunka, and indeed most Japanese cutlery, have a more rounded handle. Even ones that don't, though, have a more ergonomic design than this. While the handle's finish is pretty to look at, it's not very practical. Still, 4/5 video. Who doesn't like a nice restoration/transformation every now and again?
Thank you for your detailed reply! Yes, I theoretically hold the machete upside down on the thumbnail. It is also true that from the back of the machete I made the edge of the bunka, otherwise I would never have had enough material...👍🐢
Finally NOT STUPID MIRROR FINISCH BLADE , apparently is mandatory on youtube knife work ......Great job . Most satisfactory part the bluing . Well done !!
For those who dont know: > Red rust is Hematite > Black rust is Magnetite Hematite is unstable and water soluable, whereas a patina of Magnetite is very stable.
i have to say that i dont love the physical design of the handle- although rounded edges, the overall boxy design is an image that i can physically feel. just a preference and the choice of wood is great as well so i have to say 9/10... nice :)
This is my Favorite Restoration Channel! Great job on the Resto-Mod! The handle would probably not be comfortable in my hand...too blocky. I've been missing "Mr. Turtle", so I'm glad he made an appearance! I'm also glad you protected him when you were quenching the blade. Need him to be around for a long time!!! I LOVE how you Describe Everything that's going on. Just One of the things I love about this channel! Bravo!!!
Hello! I've been watching for awhile, and really enjoy your work. Recently, my wife has been watching these with me before bed, and without fail, it has helped her sleep, haha. She really likes any sort of blade, and it makes her happy seeing how carefully you restore these beauties. Godspeed on your endeavors, brother! You do good work :)
I watch a ton of restoration videos but I DEFINITELY look forward to yours the most. The first one I saw was your black cleaver episode. You always seem to have the most interesting methods and the tools are always in the worst condition. I appreciate you don't just grind off the rust like other channels I've seen. Great result here, the machete and handle look great!
Such a clever simple idea I went duh, your use of the drill and vise together showed what could be done when you need more than two hands and do not have a bench top grinder, great episode.
Thank you! Sometimes it's the little things that help us so much, right?! So you have your hands free for the real work. But of course you can also just use a pillar drill...🐢

Awesome work, mate. Seriously a great video, my daughter and I loved every part. Thanks
Dude you must live on like Venus to find things in this condition so often Nice job! Although that blocky handle looks impossible to actually hold comfortably to me 😨
Thank you very much! You're right about that too, I don't fake anything in my videos. The rust is real, the items are old and the processes are shown as they happened.... 🥰🤩🐢
Beautiful job as always. Watching the bluing process was both interesting and free education. Your work is getting better and more intricate with every new video. Keep it coming. P.S. your work stands on its own you don't need the turtle to enhance it.
Idk anything about restoring metal but I restore and build wood furniture and I really enjoyed the handle parts although it looks uncomfortable to hold. But it looked good
Love it. Youd be much better off with the Worksharp Pro though. More grits and it has a base to support the blade and hold that 17° edge rather than flexing when making passes with the plates.
Muy bonita labor. Muy interesante vídeo; pero esto no es restaurar. Es aprovechar lo que hay para hacer otra cosa. Algo maravilloso; pero no es restaurar.
your 2x72 belt grinder looks like one i have been thinking about getting just wondering well it works etc also first time seeing your channel great work look forward to seeing more
Thank you and welcome! Yes I am very satisfied with the belt sander, you can work very accurately and precisely, quite super! The other large (also in the video) belt sander is very rough on the other hand...🐢

*How women in 2023 remove makeup.* They use so many layers of beauty enhancements that a house feels nude next to them. Back then women used very minimal amounts to cover up blemishes and pop their eyes and little lip gloss and that's all they needed to look like a model on the cover of Vogue. Nowadays, they need to be on the magazine cover for newly restored houses and buildings with the amount of paint they use. They start with a skin cleanser, then they apply a primer just like a house or painting of a vehicle, Afterwards, the foundation is packed all over the entire face and some go as far as applying it on their neck, shoulders, and back. Now comes the concealer because the first two layers didn't hide what they needed to be concealed. Also, a “setting” powder is used because all the work done needs to be set like cement on their already plastered face. Then we have the entire beauty procedure for eye makeup so all the previous steps mentioned are repeated for both sets of eyebrows and eyes and the extended *spider-long leg eyelashes* that everyone made fun of Tammy Baker when she used it, and now it's a norm in the beauty standards of society. So happy I'm a [straight] guy. I wake up. Drink my coffee. Pick the first clean shirt and pants I see and go to work. Easy peasy! What really makes me laugh is how women poke fun at filters saying: “Girl, you don't need to use that for your pics and videos, you're already beautiful blah blah blah”! But women been using filters since the day they started using makeup to shift change their appearance 🤣🤣🤣
Me and my cat love these videos, he sits and listens to the noises and they help me sleep, 10/10 work
Thank you! I'm very happy if you like it 🐢

If I saw a Machete like this I would throw it away, the strength of the metal has been comprised.
