I love the head cannon that whenever Grog says, "I would like to rage." It is him asking permission from Pike if he is allowed to go crazy or not.
I like to think it’s a callback to every time the barbarian in the group has had to let Matt Mercer know they are going to rage
@@TheCart54321 woosh
@@Dreagostini
Whats the woosh here Bozo?
@@northernalpine4350 The woosh is, that that IS a callback to Travis announcing that his character is raging, which has NOTHING to do with the in character explanation whatsoever, i. e. in the headcannon that he's asking Pike to go apeshit, "Bozo".
I mean, it's canon that Fjord from the Mighty Nein says, "Aeldritch Blaest" every time he casts Eldritch Blast, so why not. XD
Brimscythe being a young dragon does quite handily explain why he was fooled by an illusion whereas the Chroma Conclave being anciant dragons immediately saw right through it.
not quite ‘young’, so much as the youngest out of all the ancient dragons of the Conclave
still old, but not as old as say, Thordak
@@MagnusTonitrum117 Kinda what I was saying. Young for a dragon is old for pretty much anything else that isn't immortal. That said, I don't think Brimscythe was an Ancient Wyrm like the Council was. He was just a young adult dragon, not even into the Wyrm phase of a dragon's life.

Everybody had epic moments in the climax of the fight, but can we appreciate how my boy Vax goes from nearly getting crushed by a boulder, to being thrown onto and parkouring off of more falling rocks and with the cleanest dismount into throat slice the realm has ever seen?
"All it takes is a little finesse."
fucking awesome animation for sure. And I say that as someone who didn't care for critical roll as an actual play series.
Also, nice touch that the boulder was shaped like a d20.

I enjoy the fact that this Dragon fight actually showed how goddamn tough Dragons are. There are so many shows, movies, etc (Game of Thrones Season 8 and the last Hobbit movie are the first that come to mind) where Dragons are so huge and powerful and dangerous and then boom one lucky shot takes the thing down. Brimsythe here got his wing crushed by a giant Stalactite, his throat sliced open and then shot with a magically enhanced arrow, and it still took a Raging Grog cleaving his head in two with an axe to bring him down. Dragons are fucking strong and cudos to Critical Role for actually showing it
Except 5e has made them into jokes.
@@WebShaman01 i mean, even if the source material of this cartoon is a dnd show, OP above wasn't praising how 5e made dragons super tough, they were praising how the show depicted how tough and scary dragons would be to fight/kill. if anything they're praising how matt builds encounters, lmao
They literally gave the dragon a big glaring weakspot to hit... the throat. Wow who would have thought.
And this was just an adult dragon. Can't wait to see what they do with the ancient dragons next season
@@WebShaman01 Not really. 5e nerfed power levels in general and focused on streamline combat. A normal party still gets messed up by a dragon encounter. A fully decked out party is another story, but a regular dragon can nuke a party. Accuracy is the thing that makes or breaks an encounter and most dragons will be hitting your party fairly consistently.
Imagine barely surviving and slaying a level 50 dragon and then later his level 200 homies pull up.

I thought dragons had true sight, so they couldn’t be tricked with illusions.
Is that a different version, different dragon, homebrew of my DM, or something critical role did?
(I didn’t watch the original campaigns)
@@centurionquincy3899 by nature, they don't, but there is a variant in the monster manual that allows for a dragon to have spellcasting. Vorugal most likely had the spell True Seeing.

A very good fight and quite “legit”
Managing to pull off switching from Goofy Satire humor to epic badassery in a minute without it getting weird or cringe is seriously good storytelling
Devil may cry in a nutshell
That is a very fine line to walk. If this show actually manages to pull it off then I might have to watch it.
@@spectralassassin6030 I'm a fan of the show first, and I can say that they did it really well. The mix between goofy and serious is good. They have excellent "hero" moments as well as personal, dark ones.
@@Shepsus Yep. Watched it since I made that comment. Some of the dialogue was a bit stupid in certain parts but overall, I loved the show. Those moments were also very short and few and far between so it doesn't bother me much.

The beat drop on Pike's "light 'em up, Vex" is absolute gold.
4:24. You know when I first saw the trailer for this show, I was under the impression that Grog was the main character. And it’s moments like this that justify that belief.
So I just realized something. Brimscythe spent the whole fight in the air spamming his breath weapon and it's only after his neck is cut that he starts fighting on the ground. At first I just thought it was his anger that lead him to making a stupid mistake. But then I realized that cutting open brimscythes neck was to expose the part of his body that lets him breath lighting. thus, vex shooting it meant that his couldn't keep shooting lightning and was forced to fight on the ground.
Yup. You can even see he's "leaking" electricity from the wound.
Good insight
Plus Percy and Keyleth fucked up his wings so he couldn't fly anymore, but that neck wound meant he couldn't fight long distance anymore.
@@TheCart54321 Must have proficiency on it
Also vex shooting his neck made him lower his head down for grog so the weakpoint wouldnt be exposed
"We pin his wings and drop a stalactite on him."
"And that'll kill him?"
"No. That'll get him to stay still long enough for Vaxildan to slash open his throat."
"And that will kill him?"
"Hell no. But it will open up a gap in his scales so that Vex can shoot a holy arrow into his windpipe."
"And that will kill him?"
"Fuck no. That'll just prevent him from breathing lightning. And keep him on the ground long enough for Grog to use Barbarian Rage and split his skull open with an axe."
"And THAT will kill him."
". . . if we're lucky."
'Roll for killing move."
"... 20."
@@johngona5929 How do you want to do this?
Hey, it’s D&D. Gotta make as much damage as possible. Especially with dragons.
given how fast Dragons heal this is super accurate
Probably my favorite part of this show is how gnarly all the fights are because it is based on DnD which is absolutely bonkers on its concept of combat.
When Grog screams 'I would like to Rage' always makes me giddy.. especially with the music in the backround. Props to Travis for voice acting
The best moment fo sho. Grog takes two steps cratering the ground and blasts the dragons head with one swing. Unreal
I love the small changes in music as it moves from character to character, most noticeable with Pike and the choir in the background and Grog going complete apeshit on the dragon. gives me goosebumps every time.
when scanlan's hand throws vax. theres super awesome guitar riffs too! cool details i love
Pike’s gives me goosebumps
The Scottish connection here is so cool. The dragon is voiced by David Tennant, while its look is an improvement on Draco, the dragon from Dragonheart voiced by Sir Sean Connery. Well done.
"AYE WILL SUNDAH YOUR BOONES!"
@@AlexQuill63grog: “not today sir david.”
"VAX! Did Gilmore give you ANY insight on how to kill this thing, or did you two FLIRT the WHOLE TIME?!"
Percy's such a mood. I love him.
I love that Vax's response is essentially, "Oh shit, we DID flirt the entire time."
As soon as I saw that David Tennant voiced the dragon I knew it was him. They wouldn’t waste The Tenth Doctor as a mere side character.
Ha ha, makes sense. Though there have been so many shows where the twist is spoiled cos I've recognised an actor and thought they can't 'just' be an extra.
@@spare1793
Thing is, the show has a ton of that because the main cast VAs/producers are all very well connected and there are a bunch of famous actor folk willing to do but parts just to be a part of their friends' thing.
jesus Brimscythe seemed impressive and big... but after season 2 I just realised how incredibly small he is compared to the others in the Chroma Conclave
And weak. Umbrasyl (prolly butchered the name) by the end of season 1 nearly killed everyone in their final battle multiple times, despite all of them growing as warriors, people, and 3 of them being equipped with godly artifacts. And it took them all being put to the brink and recovering a 4th artifact to kill him.
What do you expect? He’s just an adult dragon, the Chroma Conclave are Ancient and Thordak is an Ancient Red Dragon those guys are monsters in their own right.
@@castbet9183 im not too great on CR lore, was it ever explained why a "weaker" dragon would be allowed to join, and not just... serve as snackfood?
@@michelvanderlinden8363 Don't want to be too spoilery, but it's highly likely he worked with Raishan in her scheme to bring Thordak back, before the Conclave assembles in Emon when we see them. Brimscythe had an excellent disguise as General Krieg and could have very much furthered the CC's ambitions as they were getting set up, in case they couldn't immediately topple Emon's leadership. The main likelihood though is that Brimscythe would have ended up being betrayed later on, because although the CC worked on some level of collaboration, dragons are by nature power hungry and it would lead to conflict, which Thordak would not tolerate
Funny you say this because he isn't any bigger than the other dragons.
Compared to the Chroma Conclave this looks now like a Baby dragon 😂
Fun fact, Brimscythe here *is* a member of the Chroma Conclave...and he's definitely the youngest. Don't let his human form fool you, Umbrasyl is a "young adult" dragon, basically the dragon equivalent of a 20-something. He's barely 100, maybe 200 years old tops. The rest of the Conclave are all ancients, ranging from 800-1000 years old each.
I find it funny that for all the trouble Brimscythe gave Vox Machina, he was actually the youngest, and the weakest of the Chroma Conclave.
Epic music and then grog splitting his head in 2 to then asking is he dead while covered in blood sums this show up perfectly
I like the fact that in universe dragons are arrogant cocky, and are spiteful it's a nice touch to show how I person would respond to being able to turn into a giant flying magic reptile
This looks like a romanticized take on a DnD boss encounter and i'm all for it
That is exactly what this is and it's perfect
I'm guessing you aren't aware, but the show is an animated adaptation of a real dnd campaign.
Critical role is a webcast where voice actors, who happen to be friends g, t together to play dnd.
In the show, they all voice their game characters.
Vox machina is the first campaign they did, they are currently on their 3rd campaign.
As far as we know this is exactly how the fight went down at the table, but it was pre-stream so we'll never know
@Matthew evans they talked about it in one of their specials. Apparently, in the actual fight, Vax (liam) roled a natural 20 when sneak attacking, and the 'how do you want to do this' was him jumping up and slitting brimscythes throat.
Even after all this time I still love the little D20 nod during the falling rocks.
So I'm actually visually impaired, and I gotta say, the audio option for a description specifically for this show has been pretty fucking great! I do have some usable vision, but the description help me with what I can't see. Really enjoyed the show as a whole but thanks for the description I didn't miss shit.

being a long-time fan of CR, watching this for the first time was surreal. The epicness of the whole CR journey from livestream to animation didn't crystalize until this fight, and when Travis finally got to put everything he has into that "I would like to Rage" then catching the HDYWDT is just perfection.

Sam Riegel created him and is truly the only actor that could pull off the confidence, cunning, talent, and free spiritedness that comes from Scanlan Shorthalt

Can't wait for season 2
I just realized the boulder that's about to crush Vax is shaped like a d20. Nice touch ;)
Anyone notice how the dragon & his human form share a square jawline?
Fun fact. I did the math per 5e rules and only required two assumptions.
1. The party is all the same level (having their minimum possible level based on the spells we see)
2. Every roll was a max damage crit.
Assuming both of those things, killing an adult blue dragon (yes he was only adult and not ancient) was entirely possible within the rules.
He was adolescent not fully adult, so you can cut the HP total in half probably.
Random thought: Travis Willingham must look like a beast in the recording booth while working on Grog lines. :)
If you listen they have a really heavily modified version of Your Turn To Roll in this scene as heavy metal background music...
I want season 3 so bad 😩
This show took me about 3 minutes to get addicted.
That "gotcha" gives me chills
ITs fun that at 3:45 its a D20 that Scanlan breaks
4:23 what a natural 20 looks and feels like
No matter how much I search I still can't find the soundtrack lmao
I just noticed the reprise of Your Turn To Roll at 3:33 and I love it
I'm curious how their going to explain how they can't simply repeat the same "twin rivers" trick with the other dragons in season 2
Simple, make them much harder to kill. We saw in the trailer that Grog's axe broke when he tried hitting them, a problem he didn't have here. A line about their scales being harder the older they get would work.
yea, this was an adult dragon. the ones in season two are are ancient
That was related to blue dragons....not all dragons.
Also, this dragon is a young adult I believe (so about CR 16). The others in the Chroma Conclave are old to ancient (CR 21-25).
The Cgi for brymscithe seemed a bit chompy like they were getting the hang of it but loved the fight though and the later model of the dragons in season 2 was really great and smooth
Whenever someone wonders what it feels like to play DnD I show them this
As you should. Tho do remind them it is WAY slower than this lol
The music in this scene is incredible
