When an intro song is so good, that the entire audience -- between 2,000 and 3,000 people -- spontaneously sing it to kick off a live show at GenCon. That's how good this song, and this cast, are.
Man, I have a love-hate relationship with the fact that out of everything they could've chosen, they used Yasha's sword to transition to the stick marking Molly's grave...
It looks like she draws on the additional darkness of the shadows, as the detailing around her legs and arms is suctioned towards her centre before returning.
Ah, I see you too are here to reminisce on times that once were. Come come, take a seat, and experience an old memory with the knowledge of something new.
Every intro always has him show up at the end, though with this and the 2nd intro he got to play into the mysterious side of things by showing up as the Dungeon Master instead of just being Matt like the first and third intros.

Just gonna say, I'm almost through half of C2, and it took me about 4 months to watch C1. You have literally over 1000 hours of video ahead of you, so be warned. Even if every episode were only 4 hours in length, you could only get through 6 episodes in one day -- and there are 115 episodes for C1, not counting one-shots (of which there are three), and 141 episodes of C2. That literally translates into 256 episodes, with roughly 1,024 hours of time to invest. Literally, if CR was a seasonal show with a 1-hour timeframe, and a 22-episode seasonal schedule, there would be 46.5 _years'_ worth of content to watch.
I just love how the intro shows every members fighting style perfectly but my absolute favourite is that sequence at 1:00 when Beau spins all light and fast and then Yasha's sword strike feels so powerfull and heavy
Details i love but forgot about 00:20 Nott trips and then pulls hood AND mask up 00:29 Beau crushing on Yasha 00:30 Nott makes Sam's funny flask shake motion 00:32 Caleb's eyes show that he is watching through Frumpkin 00:45 startle responses 00:48 the incredible detail of Caleb casting the spell 00:50 Fjord actually teleports into the air with a sick flip 00:53 Fjord teleports again and it fades perfectly into Nott 00:54 Nott got a crit since she fired two bolts at the same time 01:15 the eye on the falchion moves 01:16 Caduceus heals Beau 01:18 the spell charging between Caleb's hands 01:21 visuals for guests and npc's 01:26 they stand in the same position as their minis
I always thought the bit at 01:16 was Beau's ki flaring up somehow, but now I actually watch Caduceus during that bit and you're right. Also explains that energy's colour, if the crystal in his staff is factoring into it.
One great thing I don’t see praised enough is the transitions, they’re Edgar Wright level, the movement brings your visual attention to where the next character will be. This is most notable at 0:51 Where Fjord’s movements transition perfect into Nott’s, making it incredibly easy on they eye. This is also shown in the fact that the characters are almost always dead centre, this means that the watcher doesn’t need to move their sight so much and so more time can be spent paying attention to the animation. Whoever did the animation deserves a an award or two.
More examples: 0:13 The iris of the eye is in centre, then zooms inward to get Fjord, remaining in centre. 0:20 Beauregard’s fist movements cleanly follow through to Nott’s footsteps, allowing our eyes to easily follow the action. 0:27 Jester opens the door in centre, and remains centre on the other side, and still again when leaving, keeping it easy on the eyes. 0:33 Jester is (again) in the centre and Caduceus’ hat allows for more easy tracking to the next shot, where it is caught and leads right to the bottom of the smoke at 0:34, allowing us to track it when it slides up. I’d continue but I’d be here all day.
@@The.Orange.Wizard Not to mention the way they transition is truly unique & inventive. Note: I had a lot more transition details I wanted to mention, but I accidentally deleted it, & I’m not gonna rewrite it.
@@The.Orange.Wizard 1:04 is a good, obvious one too with the sword turning into the pole. And then the wave of the coat catches your attention, so your eyes are already in that spot when it transitions to Cad.

Because now it's not just a mental image. Now it's a visual thing. The moment they buried Molly was so visceral is it was the moment the went from a rag tag group that would do good but were not a cohesive group to now they have cohesion and a reason to become the heros they would become. It's what made the three free members decide to stick around and fight for their people so they wouldn't lose any one else if they could help it.
1:11 This part always gives me creeps. The scenery, the singing and music, and the butterfly, which represents Molly's death. The combination just gets me everytime
Pro: there could be an animated series of this campaign Con: you can see Molly dying in real time OKAY Y'ALL NEED TO STOP READING THIS COMMENT, WHY ARE YOU EVEN IN THIS COMMENT SECTION, WHY WOULD YOU LOOK UP THE INTRO WHERE IT IS CLEARLY IMPLIED THAT MOLLY EITHER DIED OR LEFT THE GROUP SINCE TALIESIN IS PRESENTED AS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CHARACTER
I have a son 9 months old... When he first heard this song, his eyes lit up. It is his favorite song of all, and just humming the melody makes his snap around to find the song. He even gets mad if we don't find it fast enough :D
I've just got partway through the episode after his death to take a break, only to see his cape fluttering in the wind in this video and tears just start to well up again.
The sheer amount of hype this fills me with is beyond words. It's like the first time you watch My Hero Academia, distilled and injected straight into the base of my spine. And it never feels less epic.
Just thinking about the shot with Caduceus when they show Taliesin's name. There's a butterfly in the shot and Cad watches it and I think that's like so important and stop me if you heard this before I want to get this brain fart out. The animators are Filipino so like while the shot with Molly's coat and Raven!Vax means so much, in the Philippines, whenever a relative/loved one dies, if you see a butterfly nearby, that's their spirit and they're watching over you and like I'm gonna think about this for a while. It's like the ravens, I guess.
Woah, I did not realize those facts! What you said was also true, because several days before my grandma died, a brown butterfly fluttered in our shop and stayed there for a day. We did not realize that until we got the news.
That is so interesting, in Greek Mythology butterflies *are* the souls of the dead. The word psyche means butterfly but also mind/soul (modern greek has its own word for butterfly I believe) I think it's fancinating that different cultures far appart have similar associations with this
The thing I love most about this intro is that the song itself is pretty universal to D&D in general, but the animation makes it infinitely more meaningful
So, I just started watching campaign 2 a few days ago and the part they say "digging deep in your soul" I thought was "do you know Pumat Sol" from what Nott has been asking people. Now I can never unhear it.
I love how my first time watching this was my introduction to critical role when I was hanging out with my sister-in-law over Christmas and I loved this animation the first few times I watched it. Now, revisiting it after watching a chunk of The Mighty Nein, I can recognize background characters, battle scenes, and I understand the hints or flashes of character backstories and I just think that's pretty neat
0:28 "They were always beside you..." MOLLY'S BUTTERFLY IS RESTING ON CADUCEUS' FINGER! I just noticed that holy crap, the freaking feels. Also: there may be spoilers in the comments, so, don't look at them if you don't want to be spoiled.

@@TheSpencermacdougall oh, you're right. I didn't realize pointing out the Molly butterfly could actually be considered a spoiler in and of itself. However, it's at the same level of spoilerage that just watching the intro itself has, so I'm not really going to worry too much about it. I put the warning in mostly because *I* explicitly said Molly was dead. Since it was me putting that spoiler out there, I felt it'd be on me if someone actually got spoiled because of it.
Omg same, I was literally about to comment the exact same thing when I saw your comment! The rise in the music's intensity combined with the flames and Caleb's distressed look... I'm really glad quarantine has given me the opportunity to dive more into the world of Critical Role, and the adventures of Mighty Nein. Thank you all for creating so much awesome stuff.
There are certain bits of animation I hyperfixate on and can't get out of my head, and the shot at 1:24 of the camera swooping under the party is one of them, it's SO GOOD
I’m only 45 episodes into campaign 2, but Jester’s backstory seems to be heartbreaking for a different reason than everyone else’s; instead of terrible things happening, nothing happened. She was alone, in her room, almost her whole life. No friends, few special memories. Just... nothingness.
0:50 - 0:51 When Caleb casts there is a small percussion hit with chimes, then when the paw impacts the blob there's a strong percussion hit with a clap. Lovely little details.

00:54 Nott got a crit since she fired two bolts at the same time
01:15 the eye on the falchion moves
01:16 Caduceus heals Beau
01:18 the spell charging between Caleb's hands
01:21 visuals for guests and npc's
01:26 they stand in the same position as their minis
That's so great! Thank you for pointing these out!!
@FireHorn yeah i love it too!
I always thought the bit at 01:16 was Beau's ki flaring up somehow, but now I actually watch Caduceus during that bit and you're right. Also explains that energy's colour, if the crystal in his staff is factoring into it.
What about the juxtaposition between the monk's and the barbarian's fighting style?
0:47 cad making it rain so beau can sleep

Its also a Purple butterfly with red eyes, soooo
Woah, I did not realize those facts! What you said was also true, because several days before my grandma died, a brown butterfly fluttered in our shop and stayed there for a day. We did not realize that until we got the news.
In Irish Mythology they’re though to carry the souls of dead children to the next world
John Lavery and Taliesin Jaffe did Mollymauk’s voice with an Irish accent too.
That is so interesting, in Greek Mythology butterflies *are* the souls of the dead. The word psyche means butterfly but also mind/soul (modern greek has its own word for butterfly I believe)
I think it's fancinating that different cultures far appart have similar associations with this
Whenever I feel like I'm losing some steam as a DM, I like listening to this track. It gets me right back in the mood.
Even Molly’s cloak flows to the beat of the song! I love this song so much!
The thing I love most about this intro is that the song itself is pretty universal to D&D in general, but the animation makes it infinitely more meaningful
Vise I know right! The subtle touches in the animation make it special for Critical Role.
So, I just started watching campaign 2 a few days ago and the part they say "digging deep in your soul" I thought was "do you know Pumat Sol" from what Nott has been asking people. Now I can never unhear it.
I love that Laura's character wields a giant lollipop.
