I think this is kinda the go-to punishment for "Hhorny bard" i'm playing one of those in a campaign fully aware that the DM is probably gonna have it so i've got like 6 love children and i'm all for it as the character was meant to be a cartoon as it were
I hate horny bards. I made a bard in a 3.5e character and he's only fucked on two separate occasions (the wizard has fucked more people than I can count and the ranger fucked around until she met a dragon who she married)
That's the perfect subversion, in any other show it would have worked and she would have walked off. But this works so much better and is so much more on brand for Scanlan.
Yeah, I laughed at that one. I also liked how in the series Scanlan actually _acknowledged and felt guilt_ over his f*** up whereas in the campaign he was trying to weasel his way out of the blame.
gotta love how most of the cast caught on when Kaylie mentioned her mother in the campaign and Sam finally realized when Matt said: "silver-tongued devil"
It's hilarious that Liam, the man who couldn't track down Larkin for a whole episode, figured it out within two seconds of Scanlan and Kaylie's convo. His face, when he looks at Laura at the beginning, he's like "wait a minute... what if..."
Yeah, I did watch the campaign but I feel like I would have figured it out anyway, she looks exactly like him. Might not have guessed daughter specifically, but they definitely that they were related.
I love how this entire scene gave us a sob story about SCANLANS love life before he started sleeping around big time only to sucker punch us all with a "that's not my mom's name!" I swear to God I went "ah shit" when that happened and started laughing until I cried.
The thing that still gets me to this day, is watching the rest of the cast members struggle to contain their laughter during the reveal so they don't interrupt Matt.
While the show did an admirable job with the time they had, I really wanted them to include Sam’s “ego” line! Not only is perfect characterization for Scanlan but also brilliant role playing whilst completely unprepared by Sam.
Sam is UNREAL at improv. The only guy I've ever seen leave him speechless is Will Friedle in the short-lived painting show that they did a few years ago.
MINOR CAMPAIGN SPOILERS BELOW I feel like there's a chance they might pull that line in a later episode. They've already changed the pacing on their relationship a little from the stream, and I think it works for the show to have this first interaction not be a W and to have Kaylie not forgive Scanlan at all just yet. Maybe they'll save that line for something like right before VM goes to fight Thordak/Raishan.
@@stuarthutzler6670 Yeah I also thing they keep it for later so to have their relationship evolve, instead of just presenting a problem and solving right away. A bit similar with the relations between the twin and Syldor.
I love what they did in the show because it's much more realistic than rolling a persuasion check and basically gaslighting her. He acknowledges his fuck-up and felt genuinely bad for it but had enough drive to become better. His child didn't acknowledge it at all and he was perfectly fine with it because mending utterly broken relationships like that takes time.
Well, maybe not completely unprepared. IIRC they mentioned later at Talks Machina that it was part of the backstory Sam gave for Scanlan that he had knocked up one of his many flings without knowing about it, so Sam did in general anticipate that Scanlan would find out at some time and get to explore the guilty father trope. Just the way Matt had her show up caught him by surprise.
Funny that in campaign he remembered Kaylie's mom while in cartoon they set up A Bard's Lament so much they even threw almost his line about mother's name here by Kaylie as well. And I hope they gonna put "among my many faults, ego is certainly one of them, and knowing you’re part of me makes me love you even more" in cartoon, it's such a good line. They for sure gonna meet in Marquet after all since there's should be a scene where she forgive him and he promises her not to die.
Yeah I think your right, Its too good not to use it, they have harvested the best morsels for us already, they know what we want. Marquet is going to be so much, fun, do you spice?
I'll say it's a million times easier when the players are going along with you and not interrupting, joking around, etc and letting the scene play out and the other player directly involved, Sam in this instance, is as into it as you are. Regardless, even with all that, it's still very impressive
In my memeory he never did a "voice" for Scanlan during the game. It's interesting to see these side-by-sides and hear just how much of a "voice" he actually did give to Scanlan in the live streams and how it's basically just his natural speaking voice in the animated series.
As a fan of the show but being newly introduced to critical role I am just amazed and delighted at how much of the original dialogue made it's way into the show while still being so enjoyable and effective.
wow I am amazed Sam Riegel came up with that on the spot. It's one thing in the show where everything is pre-written and recorded 10 times over. Seeing him come up with that speech just then and there is remarkable.
It was done even better in the show imo. A bit more obvious with a visual resemblance between them but truly shows how prepared she was to kill him Edit: I’ve come around that the stream version was better in character growth wise, but it was really funny in the moment of the show, watching the scene play out and knowing where it was heading
I didn't like it as much tbh. I feel binding him took away from Scanlan refusing to fight her and telling her to kill him, and also the fact that he was almost naked was not great for me
OG for me. Animation has taken out and mixed up too much. The talk during the stream they had today mentioned how the animation had taken out quite a bit of canon which always sucks.
I've watched the campaign but my friend hasn't, so while watching the show together they were wondering what Kaylie's deal was, if she was an ex etc. It wasn't until they watched me bodily cringe at the 'daddy' line they figured it out.
Oooo, it's so interesting to finally see how it went down in the campaign! Always heard about it, never saw it. A bard getting their consequences. Aaaah, I've always wanted to watch Sam and the other's reactions as it played out and did not disappoint!!!!
I like how they kept some of the original lines in the animated version. I have nothing but envious respect for those witty enough to improvise as well as this cast does.
I can't help but wonder if it was because he went from trying to sound a lot more prim and proper in the game (he kind of has this flourish to his voice that you'd hear from the stereotypical upperclassman) vs. a more obvious/kinda sorta generic "I'm a comedy character" voice that we hear more of when he voices Nott/Veth in C2. Not saying Scanlan was a generic comedy character, but I also think they're saving the "flourishy accent" for some other absolutely pathetic schlub that Sam might be forced to voice act for in future episodes (wink wink nudge nudge)
i know they had to condense things for the show, but i've always loved how it worked out that scanlan found someone to care about... immediately before the world fell apart. he didn't know where kaylie was or how she was doing for weeks. it added a lot of stakes to their already emotionally charged relationship and really challenged scanlan to question his values
I love how they did this in the animated show a lot. Captured the essence of what he said in the campaign by having Scanlan spin a story about a gnomish woman he fell in love with only for it not to be Kaylee's mother. Just gut punching.
Just recently had another check in with my DM about my character. Pretty much created a loose backstory, and told him I’m open to whatever the role playing improv and roles has in store, and he can put whatever in my path and development story as much as he wants. Just touched base after a few sessions to say “I think my character has this secret background, have fun dropping hints if that mystery to us whenever you feel like it” IMO this is what makes DND fun and unique.
Note to other DMs. It's almost never a good idea to bring a pregnancy or characters child in without their express agreement even when it seems likely as they are playing the horny bard. This is a case of Matt as a superior DM and friend that knows Sam would be able to go with this, along with the great chance for story telling and character developement.
I can't wait for the show to get to the point where this whole plotline pays off. To whomever arrived at Critical Role with the show...first of all WELCOME, it's great to have you! and secondly...you ain't see noooothing yet.
Oh god's it's gonna be HARD to see Scanlan go to Suude. I wonder how they are going to implement that in the show. It was truly when Scanlan was showing signs of trying to ask for help without saying it how he became dependent on it 🥺😭.
So I wondered if the backstory that Sam gave Matt was simply “he’s a bard so he sleeps around. Do what you want with that” and he’s surprised at the table. But recently when they reacted to this in the animated show, he actually revealed that Scanlan is supposed to be Eminem, Dr. Dranzel is a play obviously on Dr. Dre, and therefore Kaylie is a play on Eminem’s daughter’s name Hailey. So if that’s the case, he acted the shock well at the table if he knew before then lol
In the watch along they did tonight Matt said he didn’t know about the Eminem inspiration and just made Kaylie without Sam knowing it was coming. It just worked out that Kaylie rhymed with Hailey.
Funny enough When matt was on it for the last 3 Episodes it came out he didn't get that it was that way with Scanlan and he was surprised at the Campaign Wrap Up Episode when that came out. Funny enough The name kayle was by pure accident, where as Sam thought it was by purpose xD
A friend had a similar situation where his character slept around both in game and before. So one night the character was poisoned and paralyzed and was almost killed by his own son. Wasn’t as funny as this scene but we still give him grief to this day.
The great success of critical role is due mostly to the creativity of Matthew and his skills as DM and also due to the capacity of the players to act accordingly to the true nature of their characters. It's incredible to see how involving his stories are and how much mind fucks he can produce during the game with the backstories of the characters. I remember that I stopped playing D&D in the past when I was young, due to moving cities and never finding anymore a DM that would inspire me to be 12-18 hours every weekend at a table playing. Long life to critical role. Can´t wait to see the next season and the might nein reign next.
Roughly starting around 2:32, I love the realization that appears on each group member's face when Kaylei's father is slowly revealed, and that Travis (Grog) is the last to get it🤣🤣🤣
as per usual the scene in the show is much shorter and with a bit of a different outcome overall I prefer the campaign one (because Sam is just so quick on the feet), however I do like that they gave Kaylie a bit more agency in the show. In the campaign it felt like Scanlan just won her over by his speech and a very high (granted with the advantage, but Scanlan had high persuasion anyway) roll, in the show it seems like Kaylie actually open to some kind of relationship, she just wants to see some actions first.
In order of realization: Laura: *already suspects something big, then starts quiet ROFL Taliesin: *immediately falls on Marisha's shoulder laughing Liam: *starts ROFL with Laura Marisha: *Looks at Liam and Laura while realizing, confirms, stares in happy amazement . . . Ashley: *agape as the truth dawns on her, covers mouth . . . Matt: "She came across a smooth, silver-tongued floutist who blew through like the wind. . ." Travis: *utter shock, covers mouth with t-shirt Sam: *Stops smiling, closes eyes and grimaces like he's in pain or choking on a spicy pepper
I remember I had only started watching 2 or 3 episodes before this. I didn’t get the full effect of this till I went back and started from the beginning….such a good story.
I think the only thing I was confused about this episode is that in the original session Scanlan knew Dr. Dransel whereas in the prime episode he didn’t seem to know him at all
2:53 still watching for the first time.. buuuut.... Marisha's FACE, dude.. it screams "Yer fucked... and I'm gonna enjoy every single moment of it.... play on, Matt..."
The fact it's so delayed to everyone else's reactions makes it twice as funny because it sets everyone off all over again. As the audience, we can see that she's been processing for the last 30 seconds, but it looks like Liam and Laura in particular thought she'd only just figured it out because they couldn't see the screen.😂
The crew of Critical Role really missed the boat by not hosting a Reaction watch party when they watched their creation brought to life for the first time as a group.
I like how they got an _actually_ Irish actress to voice Kaylie instead of just pulling in some random worker from the studio to put on a phony accent.
Honestly for me... I knew it was his daughter the whole time. How? 3 things: 1. She has the same hair color and eyes as you. 2. Their clothing. It's sorta/kinda almost identical to each other; especially the sleeves. 3. Don't you think it was kinda suspicious how she knew the same song as Scanlan? 😑😑😑 No one can just know a song like that overnight and sing it on stage with just ANYONE! And on top of that, you were gonna sleep with your own DAUGHTER!!! 😱😱😱 WHAT KIND OF SWEET HOME ALABAMA BULLSHIT IS THIS, BRO?! Scanlan, I know you a freaky man in the bed and you're down for whatever... But DAMN! 😮 You REALLY didn't know that she was yours? 😅 Yeah, I'mma let you deal with that. 😑
Decent scene, but there were a couple of things I liked better in the stream compared to the show. For one, I preferred that Scanlan wasn't bound in the stream. It gave more weight to his character, with him refusing to fight Kaylee and being ready to just allow her to kill him. As opposed to being tied up and at her mercy, he knows he could use any one of his abilities to defend himself and incapacitate her easily, but he accepts his death if it will give her peace. That's a major step for someone who up until that point was probably the most selfish and cowardly character in the group. And the second thing is the speech. My god, Sam was amazing, coming up with a speech like that on the spot. And it is completely in-character for Scanlan too. One of the things that the show has done a poor job of showcasing is his charisma. Scnalan is a joker, yes, and always one ready with a crude pun in his pocket, and the show displayed that in abundance, but Scanlan is not JUST that. He is also ridiculously charming and persuasive (on account of his 20 Charisma score), and Sam knows how to play it, but the show almost never translated that to screen. Including this time. That speech would have been the perfect opportunity to showcase that particular side of Scanlan that until this point has been missing from the show. To replace that earnest speech with "I'm DADDY?!" and then a long segment of him weaving a story about her mother only for it to turn out to have been the wrong one, while funny, was nowhere near as impactful. Again, it turns one of Scanlan's most prominent serious moments into more of a joke, which is a major miss for me.
Now THIS is a proper punishment for bards who just sleep around
Seriously! I have to remember something like that if I ever get a chance to become DM.
I think this is kinda the go-to punishment for "Hhorny bard" i'm playing one of those in a campaign fully aware that the DM is probably gonna have it so i've got like 6 love children and i'm all for it as the character was meant to be a cartoon as it were

Ahh, the perfect cringe from that! Loved it!
That's the perfect subversion, in any other show it would have worked and she would have walked off. But this works so much better and is so much more on brand for Scanlan.

Laura: *already suspects something big, then starts quiet ROFL
Taliesin: *immediately falls on Marisha's shoulder laughing
Liam: *starts ROFL with Laura
Marisha: *Looks at Liam and Laura while realizing, confirms, stares in happy amazement
. . .
Ashley: *agape as the truth dawns on her, covers mouth
. . .
Matt: "She came across a smooth, silver-tongued floutist who blew through like the wind. . ."
Travis: *utter shock, covers mouth with t-shirt
Sam: *Stops smiling, closes eyes and grimaces like he's in pain or choking on a spicy pepper
Good insight check:)
Dude, sam's speachs are always SO GOOD
*and then I disguised us all as cows"
No. No. Don't sell it short. Flying Cows.
the look on Sam's when he realizes
I love Travis being literally the last person to get it XDDDDDD
I remember I had only started watching 2 or 3 episodes before this. I didn’t get the full effect of this till I went back and started from the beginning….such a good story.
Gosh, they all look so young...
I think the only thing I was confused about this episode is that in the original session Scanlan knew Dr. Dransel whereas in the prime episode he didn’t seem to know him at all
S2 is amazing. I wasnt into the 1st season but they brought their character development to the table this season.
2:53 still watching for the first time.. buuuut.... Marisha's FACE, dude.. it screams "Yer fucked... and I'm gonna enjoy every single moment of it.... play on, Matt..."
I have been looking for something like this comparing the table top version and the animated version. Please do more!!!!❤❤❤
I was WAITING for this.
I didn’t know Aisling Franciozi voiced Kaylie at first but I’m so glad I think she might be one of the greatest actors I’ve ever seen.
Scanlon didn’t know her mothers name.
This is one of the few times it looks like Sam and Travis were the slowest on the uptake, the two who are usually the fastest on it.
well done mercer
I love Ashley's "No.."
Probably the harshest and most realistic consequence.
Travis’s delayed reaction is funny
It took me half an hour to watch this 8 minute video
"I haven't been to a whørehouse in months!" 😂😂🤣
Come on man this had to be played out!!! Scanlan is the definition of a player. But also deep down inside a good father when given the chance. 😉😁
I loved the table moment more but they did great in the show 😁
Kaylee: "Sybil."
Scanlan: "......ah cwэp."
MAN THIS WAS A GOOD TWIST
Love the bowie reference
I loved watching it dawn on everyone
I actually laughed at this reveal while watching it on the show. This was EPIC karma for Scanlan!!!😂😂
At first I thought she was his sister or something tbh, but this is much better
I think my favorite part about critical role might be watching the players giggle and freak out
Turns out Scanlan is an actual daddy
2:44 to see Travis face change 😂
Keep doin these...
I'd like to see scanlan sing the barbarian song in episode 9 both in game and video.
And that is why bards need to be kept on a leash.
I hate when that happens.
I realu would like to see more comparison
i love how at 2:45 you can see Travis realise the implications that Scanlan slept with Kaylies mom lmao
The crew of Critical Role really missed the boat by not hosting a Reaction watch party when they watched their creation brought to life for the first time as a group.
Is that just coincidence that all YT game ads targets whales too?
I love it: "If you're a fan, then show it by going broke for us!".
I like how they got an _actually_ Irish actress to voice Kaylie instead of just pulling in some random worker from the studio to put on a phony accent.
OldBoy but the blabbermouth fucks himself over, which is fitting since Scanlan The Bard always talks his way into terrible situations.
anyone knows if these episodes are on Spotify? i can only find Kraghammer for vox machina
"I haven't been to a whore house in months. It's a big step for me."
He wasn't wrong. It's no small achievement for him. 😂
Liam and Laura lmaooo
Honestly for me... I knew it was his daughter the whole time. How? 3 things:
how could you leave out the natural one
GULP.
They realy did Scanlan dirty in the animations
