Re the back of the plot. I would plant tall plants like Hollyhocks, in different colours. They return every year and give a splash of colour for months.

Depending on the lighting it gets, that back fence might be a really good place for a row of sunflowers. That would also give you some privacy, provide competition for the weeds, feed the birds, and put something pretty at the back like you wanted at the front. If they start to fall forward, you could tie them up to the fencing (if rules allow). Alternatively, you could create a trellis in front of the fence for peas, beans, or sweat peas for a green wall. Both ideas don't need much of a footprint on the ground.

Ahhh sunflower hedge ! 🤩 it’s what I’ve always wanted, and I think it could work really well in that space! Tying them into the fence would also be so much easier than staking.. it could be perfect! 🤩 I think we should give it a go 👀

I think a shed would be a very good investment a place where you could keep your tools, have a potable camping cooker so you could have a kettle so you have a hot drink also a place where you can keep your seeds and a plan of your allotment on your wall to show when and what you have put in and a couple of camping chairso you can sit outside

Thanks Seren, and well done, great work, the end is nigh as they say, you can see just what is left to do I'm sure you'll get there soon ! I'm sure your neighbours are delighted with all the clearing you've done, hopefully each year it will become easier to keep on top of ! That Robin knows where it is well off, they are known as the gardener's friend, I have one here that I'm always almost standing on as it gets so close !

Looking fantastic. Happy anniversary to you and your plot. If it were mine, up the back id have a sunflower hedge (tied up to the fence), definitely a shed, especially important given the green house isnt secure. Ive heard peppermint oil is pretty effective at keeping them out/away. Maybe you could wipe the insode down or keep a reed diffuser or something in there with oil. Definitely a seating area and your compost piles/ water butts. I think it would all look really tidy and party in the front business in the back vibes 😂❤.

I was thinking a growing wall too. I like the idea of a little shed in the corner for tools and a little seating area for you to rest. Spiders as much as we don’t like them are excellent for the garden. I have the same issue with my tool shed but I love having all my tools organized by my garden. It is looking so good and will be so nice when you get the rubbish away and the compost pile condensed.

I love the idea of a shed at the back. You could perhaps build (have built) a small roofed porch off of the shed and then create a little patio area complete with a few trees or bushes for privacy. It would provide you with a pretty spot to enjoy the birds and some shelter for showers. Good job with the bindweed. That is the worst weed to deal with! You never really feel like you win the war with that one!

Committing to less plastic in the garden is so prudent! It only makes more problems. You could also use two layers of cardboard, making sure there are NO gaps allowing any light in, since you can't add 10-30 cm of wood chip around the pond (any less doesn't block the light effectively). You will then have less problems with weeds breaking through. Congratulations! I absolutely would recommend a sitting area somewhere so you can take an opportunity to sit and enjoy the garden and your progress. You could maybe make a potting bench or sitting bench from the pallets. You have had such a productive year and have done such a great job! Bravo!

Happy 1 year! Wow it sure seems like it has gone so quickly since you started. I fought bindweed and thought I'll just use the cloth to cover my paths and wood chip over. It was beautiful for 2 years. Then the bind weed made it 40 feet across from the neighbors where it began under all the weed fabric and up into the inside of my green house! In 2022 I pulled all the fabric up and it looked like some kind of horror movie with so many roots! It took me a week to get all the roots out of the ground (I made a game of how long of piece I could get before it broke (28feet!). I then did the card board ,double thick, added soil for new beds and chips on the path. 2023 only a couple of pieces sprouted which was easily pulled, 2024 I had only one piece. I can easily keep an eye on the fence line of the neighbors now so nothing sneaks through. You are doing great! 😊

I don't know if you're allowed to grow things up the fence but maybe you could grow a climbing rose or another vining plant along it, if not on the fence then maybe a trellis in front of it! I just think it'd be a great view when coming to the plot 💖

  • @FM-qm5xs
    @FM-qm5xs 10 дней назад +1

You could probably do a seating area plus a couple of dwarf fruit trees. You can get wildlife safe netting to go over trees when they fruit. Just keep them away from compost areas or their roots will fill the compost bin.

I can understand how overwhelming it is to clear the back of the allotment. I would suggest you read up on spiders and insects. Once you learn about the different types and how beneficial they are you will appreciate them. As for the back of the allotment you can install lattice or trellises to grow cucumbers and other vining vegetables and flowers. A bench to sit on to rest will be lovely. All your hard work is paying off. If it were me, I'd just keep it clear of sheds or any permanent structures and monitor that area until I'm certain its clear of bindweed and nettles. If you turn the inside-out of the used compostbags, they will look less messy, and the sun will heat them up i(f you put them out in the sun, of course). And after another year even the bind weed will be gone. Best of luck!

Actually, the back of your plot is sunny real estate and it would be wasted on a shed. Especially since you do have a shadier spot in the front, because of your neighbors big shed.. You either need a few beds there or some fruit bushes or trees.
Also, I don't think you need a full on shed. maybe you could have a long and on the skinier side bench or crate/box thingy. They're on the pricier side, but so is a shed. So there's that.

Like you I’m terrified of spiders but my shed is so useful. Yes there are a couple of spiders in there but they have their corner and I know where they are. I even give them a name ‘Fred’ so they are more friend than foe. You do get used to them and they are more useful in the bigger picture than just being there to scare us! Plus how good would your shed look in the little patch to the right of the comfrey!?!❤

Weed suppressant cloth , unless it's completely biodegradable, is just more headaches in the future.
If you're unsure about the cardboard, lay on two layers, even three of you need to be reassured.
One tree for sure would make that back area pleasant. You might find an overhanging swing or just a back and top shelter for a seating area.
Spiders feed the birds, toads, and eat mosquitoes and other insects pests. 90% of the spiders are completely harmless.
Most arachnophobia comes from fear of getting bitten and poisoned. That rarely happens in Wales or most of the Northern countries. Spiders are far more afraid of us.

Tbf I don’t seem to get any spiders in my shed at the allotment but the one in my garden does although they don’t bother me

Maybe your fig tree can go along the back fence! The plot is looking beautiful.

Girlpower👏👩‍🌾you reach the fence👏congratulations 🎉sounds great with a seating area there, maybe you can just put a box to put your tools in, since you have a greenhouse…please go to the library and borrow a book about spiders, then maybe yuo will feel more in control 🐞🐝👩‍🌾looking forward to se all you going to grow 👍👩‍🌾

Congrats on one year!! BTW that back area did look really bad to me. Ways to suppress spiders invading your shed are to make sure it’s sealed with caulk really well, spread diatomaceous earth all around it, and spraying essential oils such as peppermint, orange, lemon inside will help. Otherwise you must keep an unfriendly environment by cleaning it out regularly.

Amazing work! In future, if you can find enough cardboard, it'll be better to layer it over any of the gaps in the boxes. I'm with you 100% on not using plastic. And, ugh, it's so depressing to see wildlife use our rubbish to nest in. 😢
