Just look at what's in the aid and it answers all questions. No tanks, no bridging equipment, no SPGs, no offensive firepower at all. Just tons of 155mm shells, anti-tank/anti-air missiles, lots of IFVs, and the only "big stick" is the ATACMS but that's nothing new, just longer range. It is a package for an infantry-heavy army to DEFEND; that's it.

What is often lost in the discussion about defense spending is that much of the US defense budget is spent in other areas. This will come back and bite the US next time they ask for help in the middle east or Asia.
Also, the cost of NATO proper, i.e. what is actually used for alliance activities, isn't that much.
Much talk about Europe taking greater responsibility for its own defense - but no reflexion on what that would mean for US influence and arms export. It is naive to think that Europe would spend its defense budget in the US.

No, they don't. Each country pledged to spend at least 2% of GDP respectively.
      2023 defence spending.
      Luxembourg was 0.7% of GDP.
Belgium was 1.13 % of GDP.
      Iceland was 0.0% of GDP.
      Denmark was 1.65% of GDP.
Other countries below 2% in 2023 were France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Canada, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia, North Macedonia, Norway, Montenegro, Turkey, and Albania,
I don't count 2024 because this year's spending is still ongoing. Maybe they will meet the target, maybe they won't. Germany may meet it because of it economic woes.

Because of putins actions Western nations must all spend more on defence and that's a simple fact that should be bipartisan.
Ideology should not trump practical and realistic appraisal of a situation andbit should not prevent the government taking appropriate action.
In the current climate any politician from either party who says there should be no increase or zero spending on defence is putting Ideology before the security of their nation and cannot be considered to have the foresight to be a leader.
It seems a very bad outcome for Ukraine to concede Crimea and I think Ukraine understands this. For anyone to suggest this as an option seems to show a lack of understanding about Ukraine's trade and economic necessities.
Without access to the Black Sea Ukraine is inhibited in exporting and will be dogged by Russia forever.
Russia on the other hand eill brow stronger and will not stop.
I doubt Ukraine would have worked so hard to regain the Black Sea access only to concede it.
It would be a travesty of justice and a huge mistake that will cost everyone greatly if Russia does not return to its own borders.
It seems advisable to realise exactly what Putin is and how his regime operate and to recognise that Russia does have an opposition that will continue to oppose putin no matter how many he disposes of and by how many means he uses.

    • @williammorris584
      @williammorris584 10 дней назад +2

Some will arrive in days. This will probably aid Ukraines air defense and deep strike ability before it does much for their combat capability.
Ukraine’s greatest need, more than materiel, is something that cannot be bought or sent- more Ukrainians. Look at Ukraine’s 2023 population pyramid; there are virtually no young men.
The material aid from the West will probably keep Ukraine from losing outright. Retaking territory will require the Ukrainians to go onto the short side of the attrition balance attacking an enemy in field fortifications; we have already seen Ukraine do poorly at that when they were in the best personnel, equipment, and supply situation they’ve had thus far.
First will come what has already been proposed: deeper conscription. When that is insufficient, the solution will be for Ukraine to ask for combat troops.

"The activity of Ukrainian troops has increased threefold near Terny. To support their assault teams, Ukrainian armed formations had sent reinforcements to that area. Despite all their efforts, Ukrainian militants did not achieve any positive results, as they failed to break through our defenses," Marochko said, citing his own sources.
The Ukrainians have also intensified artillery and drone attacks at Russian positions near that sector of the line of engagement, Marochko added.

So Gordon Brown and Labour bankrupted our country and we still cannot pay for the annual cost of all those lost years under Labour without borrowing more each year.
Nonetheless, where we are now, it seems that the increase for the UK defence now announced may only fund better retention measures for trained personnel; pay, pensions, accommodation and, hopefully, live firing training.
Any radical enhancement of capability will likely need to go much further to reverse the cuts of the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s. Won’t it?
Take it from the Overseas Aid budget; that only appears to have paid countries to despise us.

Clearly never looked at the objective of the SMO.
Demilitarisation of Ukraine was the number 1 objective. Russia has gone one better they have demilitarised NATO.
The collapse of the banderite regime will finalise the other objective.
It was never to acquire land. The longer range weapons given to Ukraine will lead to a larger loss of territory as Russia will never let them hold territory that they can launch attacks on Russian territory from.

Over 3,100 foreign mercenaries fight for Ukraine during Russia’s special military operation and most of them come from the United States and Canada, the press office of the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement on Thursday.
"Investigators have information about an overall number of over 3,100 foreign mercenaries taking part in combat activities on the Ukrainian side and the majority of them come from the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Georgia," the statement reads.
The committee added that measures are underway to locate their whereabouts and bring them to criminal liability.
