    YO IM BACK!
i wasn't being lazy or depressed or whatever, i just moved to a new house, which took up alotta time. but now that ive settled, i can get back to making vids asap once more.
you can, however, hear a bit of an echo on my voice here in there, especially earlier into the video.
it might not be much of an issue, but im not 100% happy with it. i put up sound foam on the walls specifically to combat this, but i guess it didnt help as much as i thought it would. got some more tricks up my sleeve to fix it tho, so it should be more or less fully gone, come next video. if not the one after that.
eitherway, im very happy to be back again! got another video script that's nearly done, on metal wolf chaos, and am also hard at work on the final MGS video, and also a bunch of other stuff.
    should be good :)

What frustrates me about all these indie survival horrors, is that they all claim to be a throwback and graphics style of a Res Evil early PS1 title when in actual fact they play more like a crappier 3DO survival horror, like the original Alone In the Dark games rather than Res Evil.
I love these attempts but they need to seriously look at what made Res Evil special, it wasn't just as simple as tank controls and wierd zombies/monsters.
It was the music, the inventory system, the atmosphere and design. Res Evil 1 may have had strange controls but they functioned perfectly.

    • @decadentgamer3108
      @decadentgamer3108 4 года назад +3

Well I mean the fact that the games do feel a bit jank with the tank controls, doesn't that kinda add more to the "throwback" experience? Though I do get it. Even if they do want to make the games feel like you're playing a 5th generation survival horror game, they need to remember to make sure the atmosphere/design, music, and inventory system is just as good to keep the immersion.

Using "Trace Memories" music for the "Back in 1995" segment really hit home for me. Despite the fact I've never played classic survival horror (Literally could not have played it), the music made me long for the feeling of solving a niche game on my own as I did with Trace Memories. Through an edit you made an audience member understand your argument far better than anything else could have.

7:53 Just a brief note, to Himself Takashi, but those weird, experimental games back in 95, weren't weird, or really, experimental. They were, to us, the cutting edge of entertainment. They were why you had a Playstation, or played games often enough. Those games back in 1995, weren't oddities meant to be probed, explored for their uniqueness. If your goal was to have us experience something, as we would have in 95, you should have, without a shadow of a doubt, aimed on making the game fun, in whatever form it must take, but it should take it. Because for as sad, hollow and despair inducing the experience of Silent Hill or Survival Horror at its best might be, there isn't a soul that doesn't look back on them and have a reason to smile, or a scene they want to show someone, or remember the thrill of a song or cutscene. We didn't marvel, with introspection at our blemishes. We were glowing, man. We had UFO endings.
    We had fun. --- ruclips.net/video/_xmuM5xrvcg/видео.html

The thing is, the video game industry is only growing. And yes, while the AAA studios are gobbling up most of that money, as they always did, that doesn't change the fact that there are enough gamers and enough developers out there to both, innovate and preserve tradition. There's nothing wrong with the horror genre moving towards games like Outlast or FNAF, but that doesn't mean that fixed camera angles and third person exploration need to disappear from horror all together. Most of the games mentioned here were not very well executed, which sucks, but the fact that someone wanted to make them is just proof that there's still a want for them. Hopefully RE2 2019 will inspire more passionate developers to find that middle ground between old and new, to make something that'll make everyone happy, such as the upcoming Daymare: 1998. Fingers crossed for that one.

Look, I understand that they look similar (they use pixel art, afterall), but they don't look *that* similar, not they play the same.
    Not even close.
Can't say a lot about the upper left game in the 1:52 chart, but the botton left one (Momodora) is a metroidvania centered on hard bosses (a mix of Castlevania and Dark Souls in a way), the uppper right one (Rouge Legacy) is a Rouge-lite game that, although it also follows the metroidvania formula, it plays quite diferently, centering instead on the quirks of the diferent runs.
The botton right one (Celeste) ain't even close went it comes to the artstyle, and the gameplay is extremly diferent to the other two (it is a pure platformer compared to combat focus metroidvanias)
Celeste has more to do with Mario than Momodora and Rogue Legacy, with Momodora having more to do with Castlevania than the other two, and Rogue Legacy being waay closer to other Rogue-lites.
If there's any similarities, they are only surface base.

Can honestly argue as well towards the '90% of Steam horror games being the same' statement, especially the overshadowing of Lost in Vivo, because I've played a handful of immersive and brilliant experiences through those 'Steam horror games', IMSCARED being one of them (in which Thor turned a blind eye towards for some reason?). While I can still agree with many today's horror games being too similar and lacking original ideas/content, there are still those games offering new experiences and experimenting with some ideas, Umfend is an example - it's a very curious and experimental games, but only consists of basic FPS horror gameplay. Yet the experience still felt original and polished, the story getting stuck in my head for a while. My point is that just because things seem the same doesn't necessarily mean they can't be considered 'true' survival horror. And it can be pointed out there are also multiple third-person survival games that feels the same, respectfully, so it's something that really occurs for both sides.
And yes, I felt a bit confused on his stance towards the platformer and metroidvania games...

Kind of gives me anxiety as an aspiring indie developer who wants to make a good survival horror game one day. My idea involves Resident Evil 2 remake style gameplay, but with all of the psychological and symbolic themes of Silent Hill 2. The main psychological theme would be crippling social and performance anxiety and reclusiveness, something I've had personal experience with.

After a considerate amount of thinking since this comment, I've conceptualized the gameplay to be a sort-of hybrid of classic tank-like survival horror like Silent Hill and RE4, and more modern survival horror like The Evil Within. The story is also full of the same emotional highs and lows of Silent Hill. A lot of similar symbolism, surrealism, and disturbing imagery. In a shellnut, basically a hybrid of Silent Hill and The Evil Within with a lot of exploration and equipment scavenging.

We build upon old concepts and improve them, and streamline them. We keep improving games/genres of games and even combining genres and mechanics to improve game play/ideas. I understand towards the end of your video you mention "traditionalism isn't all that bad" and I would say traditionalism isn't bad at all especially if you enjoy the game genre and its traditional mechanics for what it is (like you mentioned). To be honest, I don't mind people making games in a "traditional" sense whatsoever, because its paying homage to its foundation. I see it as someone who paints the "Mona Lisa" even though Da vinci did it so long ago.

I think it's fine to go back to the basics when it's from a place of understanding why they worked in the first place, what they were trying to accomplish... it's also fine to take back some stylistic elements. But there needs to be an understanding of the material and not just slavish copy.
At the minimum, such throwback games should strive to concentrate the best of those games and throw away as much jankiness and inconvenience as possible (which, I'll admit, is tough for horror where the "bad" controls and frustration can contribute quite a lot to the tension of the best moments that you're trying to emulate).

Genre isn't related to the word generic just because they have similar letters. Genre is actually related to the word gender, but originally it was an adjective for paintings meaning "depicting scenes of ordinary life." Not generic ~ unless you mean to go all the way back 6000 years ago to what ~possibly~ could have been the suffix *gene- which might have meant "to give birth" or "to beget". That might have ended up giving us words like general, gender, genre, and benign, but that's only a hypothesis and also would still mean you're wrong about the words' connections because *gene- originally still did not mean generic.

I don’t get why people call tank control-styled horror games something old... while completely ignoring the fact that we haven’t played horror games that way for longer then they’ve had that existence streak during the 90’s and the start of 2000’s.
And we HAVE been playing horror games RE4/FPS style for the past 15. If that is not making it stale I have no idea what’s supposed to be stale even.
I know it’s not exactly the point of the video, I’m just still mad with people just casually calling tank controls and fixed camera angles a “tired concept which happened in the first place due to technical limitations of the hardware”.
Well... I’m bored to tears with constant over-the-shoulder and FPS look and control scheme. The RE2 Reimagining game that came out recently was the last straw. I just can’t. Not even Evil Within 3 will force me to come back to this stuff. I’m completely spent.

1:45 This is genuinely one of the most shit tier takes I've ever heard. Firstly it's a non sequitur as you were previously talking about similiarities in gameplay and you equate that to similarities in visual design which is stupid as hell. You also, idk if purposefully, cherrypicked the sections from Momodora and Celeste. Take practically any other area from either of those games and they would be completely visually distinct other than the fact that they both have a pixellated art style. Ive played three of those games and, as much as I hate the word, I cringed when you called them generic or even compared them because they are all completely distinct from one another one is a level based difficult platformer that explores themes of anxiety and how that can manifest within us, one is a roguelite and the other is a soulsborne inspired metroidvania. The indie game industry is really the only industry that is actually pushing the envelope in terms of stories, characters, gameplay and passion projects and is the only area of the games industry that supports certain niche/dying genres that are still beloved such as rogue-likes and metroidvanias. To dismiss some of the best games in their respective genres as "generic" because they have a vaguely similar art style in one section of their games is beyond stupid.

What’s that music from???? I want to say Mercury Meltdown Revolution or some fighting game for some reason. I can’t remember.
Also, Remothered was a 10/10 for me until literally the last minute of the game. That last bit with Gloria after the moving the cart and shimmying through the shelf or whatever is impossible. Nothing you can do to get by her. She never leaves and the moths won’t let you pass. Also, if you turn your light in to distract her you’re dead because it won’t let you shimmy back through the shelf for some reason. Also, self defense items are out the window because you have to use one to push the cart. Game won’t allow you to do it without getting hit at least once. I even watched a walk through and mirrored everything they did step by step. They also did things that shouldn’t be possible in the video. So I guess it’s impossible to beat her and with that being said, 0/10, uninstalled, fix your goddamn game. Lazy ass devs.
