My favorite Alone in the Dark game was The New Nightmare, mostly because it was a shameless copy of Resident Evil (which is ironic). Aside from that, this franchise never caught on with me like Resident Evil and Silent Hill did. I'm hoping the upcoming remake will finally be the game that this series deserves.
@@LuciferHunter-kt7pm You must be referring to The New Nightmare. As stated above, I actually like that game quite a bit, despite being a blatant copy of Resident Evil.
I just found your channel literally yesterday, and it seems I arrived just in time because I love the lore behind Alone in the Dark, thank you so much for doing this.
Am I the only one who loves the 2008 game? It was my first 360 came so you’d think it’s nostalgia, but no. I played it about 2 years ago and still loved it.
I loved The New Nightmare quite a lot back then. I think the atmosphere, the use of lighting, the different scenarios were all handled pretty well and being able to call your partner through the walkie talkie was fun too.
This was a treat. I still love the artistry of the first 3 games, tho the gameplay isn't my favourite. The backgrounds are just so gorgeous. Would love to get your thoughts on Nocturne if it suits your fancy.
Back in the day, the artistry was what made you look past the gameplay. They felt just as clunky in the early 90s as they do now, but it was the experience that made them so memorable.
Infogrames bought Atari from Hasbro in 2000, and although they didn't buy "everything" until October 2008, Infogrames used Atari to publish games, like Alone in the Dark 2008. In 2009 Infogrames changed names, and became Atari SA, so there's that.
I've played The New Nightmare (6 completions), and the 2008 game (1 finish). New Nightmare, is fantastic and easily one of the best games of the classic horror era (static cameras). 2008 game is a jumbled mess, too many gameplay styles and ideas mixed in. I feel 2008 game would've fared better had they kept it more simple. I feel optimistic the 2024 Alone in the Dark remake will bring the series back from oblivion. There is no better time to do so since 2024 will be a quiet year fro Resident Evil. Same can be said for Silent Hill. 2024 will be the renaissance year for both Alone in the Dark and Silent Hill.
The original Alone in the Dark game was absolutely ground-breaking for it's time. It is a 1992 game, to remind you some of the games that came out that years: Final Fantasy V, Sonic 2, Wolf 3D, Super Mario Kart. This was one of the first actually 3D games (3D characters over 2d backgrounds) I played (the other one was Stunts also on DOS). This was way before the first 3D consoles were even imagined. Not only it was technically impressive but it also invented most of classic mechanics Resident Evil would borrow later. After the first one, the following games on the series had a steep decline. But the creator of the game, Frédérick Raynal, went on to work on another ground-breaking game, Little Big Adventure 2, another underappreciated 3D DOS game that was way ahead of it's time, but this one was an action adventure game.
Nice video,i never had the chance to play these games by miself,i only saw some of my friends playing Alone in The Dark The New Nightmare a little bit and thats it,was amazing knowing more about these games with your reviews.
The New Nightmare was my starting point in Alone in the Dark series. I like it a lot, but only Carnby's scenario. Then I tried "Alone in the Dark 2" on PS1 and was quiet confused. Not only it didn't looked like first game, it plays and sounds like a totally different game as well. Of course I didn't know at the time The New Nightmare was fourth game in the series. Then I tried AitD'08 and kinda liked it, but again I failed to see how it was connected to TNN and after having a hard time using a light source to walk through dark goo I stopped playing it. Later I learned about other games and eventually bought original trilogy to try it myself. As with PS1 game, I had a very bad time with AitD2 and AitD3, but surprisingly, I really liked AitD1. It is less playable than sequels and it's trial and error design is something I hate in gaming, I still enjoyed it quiet a lot. Still need to complete it, which I hope will do eventually. I never was interested in Illumination. This new AitD game seems interesting for me. I hope it will be good.
irrc its explained through an email or text message in alone in the dark 2008 why edward is still alive in the present day. at some point before he did come in contact with the stone and became possessed. this kept him alive through the years. it could also explain why he uses modern day lingo as he subconsciously picked it up during this time.
Alone in the Dark: Illumination is the equivalent to Resident Evil’s godawful spinoff Umbrella Corps. Both have the same gameplay and both suck huge amounts of wind. Avoid both unless you like to torture yourself
Ok, but Alone in the Dark 3 had an iconic soundtrack, the music that plays when you arrive at the Town is incredible, and a little scary. I still listen to it from time to time!
I only had the 2008 reboot on Xbox 360, but I'm hoping the upcoming 2024 remake for the original Alone is great. Resident Evil could use real competition I haven't cared for the last few RE games, especially Village. I'd like to see New Nightmare rereleased for both current consoles and pc. I did like that dev's follow up game, Cold Fear, too.
There was a game that came out in 2015 called White Night that was a kind of sprititual successor to AitD. It was set in the 30's in a haunted southern mansion with light as a mechanic and a distinctive black and white art style. I really enjoyed it. There was also a series called Ecstatica that was inspired by AitD that came out in the 90's, but seems to be mostly forgotten now. It was set in a medieval village that had been taken over by demons. It also had a "stalker" style villain you had to evade for most of the game long before Resi 2.
Just a quick correction, Atari was not a new publisher for 2008. Infogrames bought the Atari name and IP and started using it instead of their own around that time. So it is still the same company all the way through.
Thank you for saving me countless hours of frustration and confusion. This series has been sitting on my back burner for the longest time, and now I’m just grateful I’ll never need to suffer through it, because it seems like there’s not really any kind of worthwhile payoff in the end, as sad as that is to say. Thanks for the video. My favorite one is the New Nightmare, and I'm still hoping for the Remake one day. And by the way, these two separate game perspectives from Carnby and Aline are much more different and unic that we have in RE 2.
It turns out that the Carnby in TNN is technically the same Carnby from the original trilogy. Due to the encounters with the otherworldly forces it caused his spirit to reincarnate in the modern age with a new body but retaining his skills against the supernatural
Worth mentioning that there's a Playstation 3 exclusive version of the 2008 game called Alone in the Dark: Inferno. This one has much better controls and it feels a lot more enjoyable to play in comparison to the Xbox360 / PC. I feel more people who have any interest in the 2008 game should know about this version; which imo upgrades the game from clunky mess to a clunky hidden gem of sorts.
Resident Evil may owe a lot of its conception to Alone in the Dark, but RE's continued financial success is more than likely the only reason AitD hasn't died as a franchise yet. So it really has come full circle.
Its funny to think that this is the game that inspired Shinji Mikami to make Resident Evil, and now they're inspired by their remakes to recently create the remake of their first game.
If I remember correctly from another Alone in the Dark series retrospective, there was an earlier attempt at a remake of the first game that was more akin to the Resident Evil 1 remake. So something more faithful, and with updated graphics.
Illumination looks interesting, maybe with enough resourses and time it could be better. I like how the 3D assets (except characters and animations) and the darkness looks in this one.
AITD: Illumination wasn't just a fall. It was a swan dive into an empty swimming pool. All I needed to see was gameplay and immediately knew it was hot garbage. Hopefully the remake gets the love it's long needed and with the original creator giving it praise can only make it feel more appreciated.
Really nice video, but I don't share your view on AitD 3. To me, It's the best game. It was the first of the series that I played as a kid and the puzzles were actually somewhat logical (with a few exceptions) compared to the predecessors. Especially AitD 1 had some really obscure puzzles and if I recall correctly, you could also dead lock yourself without being able to finish the game if you screwed up certain parts. Apart from that, I really liked the cowboy setting, quality of the awesome soundtrack and voice acting. Btw, it's Carnby, not "Carneby". Anyway, your video shows that you put some real effort into it. Keep it up! Subbed :)
Thank you for your personal experience with Alone in the Dark 3. It was very insightful and eyeopening and always look forward to hearing others thoughts other than my own! Thank you for the sub :)
I am going to be Devils advocate for Alone in the Dark 2 Carnby is kinda an action protagonist, he can kill eldritch horrors with his fists. This guy wouldn't even flich at picking up a Tommy gun to kill mundane gangsters.
I am not an Alone in the Dark fan, but this was a solid video and I may give the franchise another go... and I was already planning on picking up the new one when it comes out
Pretty decent video. The only thing that kept throwing me off is that you kept saying Carnaby instead of Carnby. Other than that this was a pretty good watch.
2008 is way underrated, such a shame it's so difficult to get it running on a modern PC and we have to use 360 to get it to run decently (Inferno on PS3 is a compromise)
Could someone help me find a game I'm thinking of? I remember the game was pretty old, around 2007, the setting was an abandoned house, there was a family crypt next to the house. I remember at the end of the game there was a jump scare that took place in a bathroom shower, the character would move the shower curtain and there was some kind of mutated baby monster thingy that would chase you out of the house, you had to get inside the car and drive away to escape and the game ended. The game was a typical exploration in first person, lots of youtubers played it like Markiplier.
Funny enough, I didn’t play all the alone in the dark games according to their releases over the years I did start off with alone in the dark new nightmare in early 2000s I played it on PC because I tried the PlayStation demo and graphically. It was OK as opposed to what a computer could do had better resolution and better clarity and if I recall it was a code for invincibility and I like to cheat. Anyways, I really like the game and I was able to hook up a PlayStation 2 controller through the computer so I could get a better gamepad field and if I recall I downloaded part one through one of the PC magazine demos and then bought part two and three as a package at Compa USA they’re OK but by the time I started playing them graphically they were becoming inferior to computers. Still great storylines. Then came PlayStation three and, I wanted to get this game. I ordered it through eBay but instead got the PlayStation 2 version and I was pissed because I knew it would be graphically inferior. I eventually got the PlayStation 3 Inferno version and comparably they were different, but I do have to say I gave PlayStation two some commandments for pushing the system and it was a different type of game for PlayStation two playing three it looks so much better yes but it was a Jenkee control that’s for sure. Took some getting used to. I still enjoyed it and there were parts of the game that I really loved the whole city going to hell, the car chases scaling the building and the simple fact that there wasn’t a whole lot of characters throughout the game because mostly everybody had died and got turned into a demon. So I gave you that sense of you were pretty much alone I tried, then for PS4 the illumination demo, it was OK I guess didn’t make me wanna buy it I may still if I can find it in a bargain bin just to see where the story has gone. I’ve only watched videos of the remake again graphically obviously where in a PlayStation 4, PlayStation, five generation, so at least it will be easy on the eyes. I don’t know how it feels for gameplay fluidity. I am hopeful that the mechanic system was pretty good for like checking your inventory where you open your jacket looked down. I really enjoyed that for the inferno version, I thought that was clever, that was very reminiscent of call of Cthulhu dark corners of the Earth I like that first person perspective, looking down and checking your body, healing your wounds from that clever. Hopefully much like the resident evil remake series if the remake alone on the dark one, they will do two and three, because those were great stories and I love to see how interpretation is done with the PS4/5 capabilities. I will say also, I watched the Christian Slater movie when it came out a few years ago and I just felt like “meh!” Then I watched that horrendous directive video alone in the dark too movie. I actually didn’t watch the whole thing because it was so god-awful. I tried my hardest and maybe I’ll go back and try it again now that I mentioned this, but it just wasn’t a good movietrying to keep all the universe alone in the dark relative has not done well. Hey, maybe they could make another movie and try to fix what they couldn’t do in the first two?
I had this for Sega Saturn and found it completely unplayable. Maybe I just sucked (or it was the Saturn version) but I couldn’t figure out how to control it worth crap.
i tried every Alone in the Dark game as a kid and they were ALL too difficult to get past more than a few levels. IDK if I was just bad at them but I think they were just unfair and difficult games LOL. it was, however, disappointing as FUCK hahahaha. it felt like a waste of money and an insult that they were so unforgiving without a better difficulty level possibility. late 90s games in general were just broken for beginners, difficulty-wise. :( too bad.
You see, it's just all opinions and points of perspective, isn't it? You're considering the 1st ever game in such a high regard, meanwhile, I think the whole franchise from back to end is a COMPLETE pile of trash. I wouldn't play those 3 first games, not even with someone pointing a gun to my head. Not even back then, when it just released. I always thought it was a freaking abomination of gameplay, you could put ANY Super Nintendo game in front of me instead of that crap. And yes, it was a BIG innovation and inspiration, specially to all Resident Evil games that came after it, but regardless, I still always thought it was complete garbage :D
I think the fourth part of this series of games is the truest. the kind of game that matches the name "alone in the dark" one hundred percent. and then it was necessary to move in exactly this style

I tried my hardest and maybe I’ll go back and try it again now that I mentioned this, but it just wasn’t a good movietrying to keep all the universe alone in the dark relative has not done well. Hey, maybe they could make another movie and try to fix what they couldn’t do in the first two?
How come they haven't moved a lot of these to modern consoles. As a console gamer, I wish I could experience these games. (At least the first one)
And btw, infogrames renamed to Atari. They bought the naming rights.
The ps3 game really seems fun to play so i’m going to try it out before the new release

This game lost its soul once Raynal left Infogrames.
Maybe now retrospective of nocturne by terminal reality?
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
My condolences that you had to buy Alone In The Dark Illumination just to make this video.
Not to be confused with the adult movie series of the same name 😗
but what about the gameboy color game?
The car section....if you know you know
I had this for Sega Saturn and found it completely unplayable. Maybe I just sucked (or it was the Saturn version) but I couldn’t figure out how to control it worth crap.
It was my first game on the saturn. I never had any problems aside from timing melee attacks.
i tried every Alone in the Dark game as a kid and they were ALL too difficult to get past more than a few levels.
If you are doing a clone video, I want to share my game!
You made a clone? Of which one, or inspired by the series?
@@picahudsoniaunflocked5426 inspired by
Edward Carneby???
I think the fourth part of this series of games is the truest. the kind of game that matches the name "alone in the dark" one hundred percent. and then it was necessary to move in exactly this style
Carnby not Carnaby
