A little tip for anyone trimming their own transparent case, you can use acetone on a cotton swab to remove marks left over by your trimming. Acetone melts plastic, so be careful where you put it.
But doesn't acetone introduce clouding? Sure on this specific instance it would be no problem since it already has that frosted/milky glass look but on a proper clear look plastic acetone could be a bad idea I think.

@@gundalfx If you use diluted acetone you'll be able to gauge when the clouding begins.
A white power LED would be perfect for this.

@@airplane6417 of course it will fit, its a Gameboy color game, is meant to be played on a Gameboy color, also the ROM board is also flat, y will fit on a regular cartridge

What would make this even better is buffing the shell with automotive headlight polish like PlastX. It takes a good bit of elbow grease, but once it comes out to a mirror finish, it looks absolutely amazing.

Or a small CNC. He rig the case to state put and the cnc could carve the right bits off.

I just IPS-modded my GameBoy advance. And i also ordered some rechargeable Li-ion batteries. They recharge over Micro-USB. The port is actually in the bat. . Really cool that thing.
I finally worked up the courage to open my broken gameboy color and give everything a clean with IPA. If you hadn't made your channel i'd have never even gotten into collecting nintendo retro consoles so i am really greatful to you Elliot :)
You inspired me to fix up my old DMG. I bought a clear shell, and a backlight/bivert mod chip kit. Along with a soldering iron and some other things. Been watching you forever so I feel like you've taught me a lot. The backlight/bivert chip are coming in soon, wish me luck!

During quarantine i‘ve cleaned up my basement and found my old GameBoy Advance that my parents gave me on my first day at primary school. I‘ve ordered an AGS-101 for it and put it in. It‘s absolutely amazing to play my favorite games on a backlit screen.

Imagine actually making a gameboy color shell and buttons out of glass. Thatd be pretty dope, if it werent for, ya know, fragility and fingerprints.

During Quarantine I’ve been getting back into gameboys lmao
I did this to. I did a very mediocre chop job so it's not the most esthetically pleasing, but I got the screen aligned and everything works so I'm happy. I don't like using my GBA SP for GB amd GBC games so this is really nice. Thanks for the tutorial!

Love it Elliot! I will be getting an ips screen to mod a GBC next! Just given my NES edition GBA SP a good clean and installed the guts and screen from a cheap American AGS-101 inside. Best Gameboy ever in my opinion, just the fact that in can play anything from the DMG all the way to the GBA! The AGS-101 screen is epic. Perfect handheld for isolation. The switch is a very close second!
Funnily enough i did 2 jobs myself during quarantine. One was replacing the cracked glass screen cover on my canon 600d, the other was swapping out the buttons on my ps4 controller for a custom look.
I had all the parts for years but too scared to do it in case it botched my stuff (expensive to replace) but happy to say i did it and everything works great!
Just finished a Gameboy Colour mod, got it in a Translusant black case, McWill Backlight, Glass Screen Protector and a set of Hand Cast white buttons made by myself. The System didn't have any Batery terminals so I had to fashon myself some out of an old DMG case. Also waiting on an IPS screen for a DMG to replace a damaged screen. Also working on a snes arcade stick and rebuilding a 3D printer. Should be enough to keep me busy during the Quarrantine.

Looks mint! You should get a Dremel and Dremel down the extra bits that were cut out (very carefully) would look a lot cleaner than chopped.
That is amazing. I want to do that now. Gonna have to hunt me down some parts and try to build one. I love Translucent game systems.
I remember when they started selling them for the Xbox. Need to replace the screen on my psp and plan to give it a clear case at the same time cause I think they look great. Could you do the same to a psp so I can see the best way to do it. Anyway hope your staying healthy and keep the vids coming 👍🏻
Those clear shells come up a treat when you spray paint (any color) the inside of them.
Just make sure to tape off where the power button slides back and forth, getting paint there will cause the switch to stick :)
BTW I also love anything transparent... I guess its just the byproduct of being a kid in the 1990's.

I've been gathering up all the parts to do my first mod. I'm planning on building my dream gameboy advance.
I've got a clear purple shell, my tri-wing included screwdriver set just came today, I've got brand new membranes
to match the buttons that came with the shell and I'm just waiting on the ags101 screen I ordered.
Can't wait to do this!
Once retro-modding is back up I'll probably order their power kit as well so I can charge it.
Why did you opt for the AGS-101 screen? You can get the IPS v2 kit from funnyplaying.com(OEM) for $45 USD(cheaper than most AGS-101 screens + adapter).
@@Zark-Muckerberg I couldn't find an ips screen on Amazon. I need to order it on Amazon because I don't have a credit card but in Japan where I live you can order stuff on Amazon and pay for it at a convenience store. I plan on figuring out the credit card situation by the time this corona issue is over so that I can actually order from retro-modding when they reopen.
Since you asked what I am doing, literally while watching this video I have an AGB-001 across my desk right now trying to clear off some battery corrosion. It turns on some times if you fiddle with it enough and corrosion seems to have gotten to where the battery contact that is attached to the motherboard is soldered. This is my first repair attempt and have been subbed to your channel for a while and I figured why not watch your videos while I am working on this trying to pass time :).
I just bought a new shell for my ds lite because i broke the hinge when i was 7 and havent got round to buying a new shell. Ive heard that its easy to break the ribbon cable of the screen and the shoulder buttons are complicated to put back. Also great video! I love seeing gameboy refurbishments and mods!

if you add a bit of heat to the edges that you cut, and to the screw bosses, it'll take the stress marks off of them. they'll get more clear pretty quickly.

Just wanted to say that you can make your cuts look much more invisible with a bit of heat. If you carefully heat the white torn part with your hot air station, you can make those lines disapear :)
Also, would be curious to see what a non frosted clear case would look like!
I love Retro Modding, I built my favorite Gameboy Advance from parts I ordered from Retro Modding and Boxy Pixel. Wish they were open right now, I am bored out of my mind and want to rebuild a DMG Gameboy next.

I have four shells, all transparent, on their way! Gameboy, GB color, GBA, GBA-SP
I also have 4 gameboy stands on their way, to display them. Now I'm gonna have to make clear game cartridges as well
Unfortunately, they do not make non-colored GBA cartridge shells.

FunnyPlaying has a clear speaker for most GB generations, that would look amazing in here. Awesome build regardless!
If you sand the cut marks flat and work up to 2000 grit from about 320 then use some future floor polish you’ll get a almost perfect clear look

You should def do a build of a Gameboy Macro XL using a original fat Nintendo ds or a Gameboy macro using a ds lite with a custom front plate from the boxy pixle website, great video as always Elliot I’m always amazed by how big ur main channel has come dude !
TRF isn't it just satisfying when everything comes together perfectly.
if you're running short on IPA it really is perfectly harmless to put PCB's in an ultrasonic cleaner with just distilled water and some ammonia based cleaner (Cif kitchen cooktop cleaner). it'll remove all the dirt and grime as well as remove oxidation/corrosion from the contacts and switches, then just rinse and dry with an antistatic cloth and either a hairdrier or radiant heat.

you can heat up the parts you cut with a lighter or heat gun. to make the milky white shart effect disappear.
That's what i always do if i mod a clear shell. The cuts are near invisible then.
Haven't modded any gameboys but I did front light mod my Color just before everything started. And ordered a pocket the other day that's probably going to get an ips screen.

I have seen completly transparent lens cover on aliexpress, was for DMG, but sure it exist on GBC too
I got a modded GBC from my fiancee that she hand painted and modded a backlit screen to :) She painted a Yoda inspired by the comics on it, looks awesome!

I wish i had that much money to do all these outstanding mods. I have replaced a few shells but never had the money to do an ips screen.
I had the same brittleness issues with my Joycon clear shell replacement. Lucking some superglue helped but you do have to be really careful with the screws. I don't know if it's just cheap plastic or if clear plastic is just more brittle.
Edit: Also you and Jerryrigeverything will get along well with a love of clear electronics.
