Ok thanks
The Retro Future hey I know I’m late and you probably won’t read this but is there any reliable and affordable place to buy refurbished gameboys? I’d like to get two one for modding
he'll yeah
thank you for letting us smell the isopropyl alcohol!
I’ve seen your profile picture somewhere before...
yeah thanks, my mum doesn't let me drink that stuff any more so I'm glad i got a taste of it somewhere thanks colin or whatever your name is
clint ? lachlan ? idk
good night
@@zerocks88 his name is Elliot 💀
I think it's always healthy to keep the derpy moments in, people need to know that much as these mods can have really beautiful results, they aren't without error most of the time :D
i always love the idea of something being entirely build out of spare parts... it adds something very unique to the end product ^^
Me: Okay, it’s 2am, time for sleep.
RUclips: The Retro Future has uploaded a new video.
Also me: Well, who needs sleep!
baseball7hamburger Noob, i'm watching this at 3:50 AM lol

An entire year later and here I am at 1 in the morning finding myself in a similar predicament 😂
Loved how he wrapped up the whole build with the closing statement "Now you can play late in the dark."
Its a better video with the mistakes as we can all relate to that, good vid
Very disappointed with this video, was expecting him to drill for oil, create plastic from it, mould the shape of the housing with it, mine for copper, use raw materials to make the motherboard and the chips etc, all this cowboy does it use pre-existing materials from China.. jeeze clickbait much!.
wheres your backlight attempt?
Rwilliams drill for oil? Start with raising the dinosaurs to turn into the oil, ffs!
This isn’t Minecraft I think he needs a crafting table first
yes, very sad to see he didn't take the time to do this video right and invent the universe...
couldn't you tell from thumb nail that this is CLEARLY not the case
I love the idea of modchips. You drop this circuit on the board of another device to expand or alter it's function somehow.
I put a nice red backlight on my DMG, and i gotta say... removing the LCD reflective backing from the LCD glass is one of the most harrowing things i've done in a long time... the fear of A) tearing the ribbon B) shattering the glass C) damaging the ribbon's connection or D) cutting myself even if i've done it all right.. are HUGE. Dang.
As wonderful as this is, I can't unsee that the screen is wonky :(
Thanks, now I can't unsee it either!!! D:
i pray he fixes it so we can get sleep again
Aaaaaaaaaaaahh
eew
if you'd take a little more time aligning stuff, it would be easier for you to solder the stuff in place. also its a good idea to remove as much of the old solder from the un-used pads underneath anyways plus it would fit much nicer, making for a way more solid job :)
9:28 on the top right of the thing that’s holding the screen you can see the smash bro’s logo
viper biter that’s the table lmao
fighter pack 8 has been confirmed to have 5 fire emblem characters and the gameboy
True
Elliot, I just wanted to let you know,
you're my inspiration. I began watching your videos quite a while back because the idea of someone cleaning and fixing old consoles intrigued me, and since I began watching your videos all that time ago I've been obsessed with it! Your videos have encouraged me to begin looking into old and dirty consoles to fix, renew, and modify them, and just getting to invest myself into something so unique and rewarding has really pulled me out of a very lengthy depression I've been dealing with. Your videos have sparked a love of old game consoles inside of me, and I can't thank you enough for encouraging me to go out and do something with what I have. Your videos are the best, thanks so much for making them and sharing them with us. I'm your biggest fan
i commend you for being so organized! i love your work setup. People Don't realize how important it is.
It's commend, not command.
sorry my french took over (。-_-。)
Thanks!
@@cestusfr It's fine man, just wanted to correct you.
Loved it Elliot. I encourage you to continue to be creative and do stuff like this and share it with your viewers. Great job.
Man my heart stopped when you bent up that screen connector. Interesting video though really liked it :)
I like when you keep the messed up parts of repairing these. (14:20) . When we try to repair, we will try not to force or at least be a little more careful thinking that might happen.
You should totally do basic tutorials of like taking stuff apart and putting it together or replacing parts of various tech so people at home can do this same stuff cause its super cool!
Okay! so it's a Backlight Mod....
14:18 - OH, NO! he broke it!
I would love to see many more of these. To be honest, if I had all those parts, I don't think I could stop myself from not building models and most likely selling them.
You got really lucky with removing that back polarizer, looks great man
Do you have protection?
*grabs handfull of gameboy rubbers*
😂😂
Great video and like the fact you didn't edit the ribbon cable mishap out. Sometimes things don't work out but it's how you deal with it makes the difference.
I like how organised you have all your stuff!
This game boy looks awesome ! I didn't thought the white / red / black would work together but it does and really looks good !
7:42 the day deaf thought he was summoning a demon
*"O Sugar!" Haha, never heard that. 😂*
Yeah because honey, ice, and tea usually follows.
your welcome! I really enjoyed watching subtitle. Such initiative!
Well done, man! Looks great. I can't believe the ribbon cable holder popped up, I've never seen that before. Glad it still worked! I also really liked the black shield- it's subtle, but really nice.
That's some good box of pieces. That show how you are truly a gameboy magician.
Great video Elliot. I just tried my own bivert mod today and messed it up at one point. Thankfully not too costly of a mistake, but seeing your board almost give out on you made me feel a bit better, haha.
Are we just not going to bring up the drawer with light saber buttons?
I was thinking the same thing... Refurbish a lightsaber! careful when checking if it works... ;)
Fu
Where?
Great work, mate! Keep going on this way
This was great, it would be cool if you did a regular update of the potential custom mods released for different systems, maybe quarterly.
Birds-eye view is awesome. Thank you for another great video
If you've never tried ChipQuik, you should! It really makes backlighting DMGs and Pockets way easier.
That's solder paste, right? Why would that make it way easier in this particular case?
virox It’s not solder paste, it’s a special combination of metals and chemicals that allow you to easily desolder the ribbons on the LCD so you can open it up and remove the backing. :)
@esotericsean solder wick, right?
subbed and liked because you actually showed when you messed up the cablebridge connector, i don't think a lot of people would show it this honest.
You should make a rechargeble batery for it ;)
I imagine what you're imagining will cause some case damage, so an aftermarket rear shell would be needed, unless you mean to just use regular Ni-Mh AA cells. As they're Ni-Mh, they'd have to be fully discharged before charging.
Whats the point when you can buy energizer recharge NIMH AA batteries?
Kaleb Gullan: It would be nicer to install just the recharge circuit to recharge those energizer batteries directly on the GB.
In my apinion it is ok to trim case plastiks...
I would try to not trim the case unless i have other original gameboys.
You won't know if you would want to restore the product to its original setup in the future.
This brilliant video was perfect timing. I managed to finally buy a game boy on eBay today which I hope to backlight and bivert just like this. Thanks Elliot.
I’m really loving all the new things you’re doing for the channel! Long time fan :D
Until I saw that backlight on the DMG my thoughts were _just put an AGS-101 screen in there._
But really, that looks fantastic!
Thumbs up.
How would you put an AGS101 screen in there? You would need an adapter ribbon cable that would have to be made from scratch and produced in China, costing thousands of dollars.
First time seeing your channel, as a 30 year old child, this excites me! Iv still got all my childhood consoles, saga, n64, snes, gameboys! Im going to look into upgrading my gameboy colour! What would u suggest? For a better gaming experience and a clearer picture?
My heart sank when he hit the ribbon cable. Glad it wasn't damaged.
First time I heard red being a bright color.
I’m never gonna do this, it’s just really interesting and fun to watch
Elliot: Smell this, guys!
Me: *inhales*
Flour, spice and everything retro that's the recepie for a sick Gameboy
First video I have seen from you, instant Subscribe. Thank you so much for your in-depth verbal and visual explanation. Can't wait to get my hands on some parts and get into some mischief.
Nice choice on the white buttons. Looks very cool.
"Thanks for watching subtitle" - Subtitle dude you got a shout out ;)
Very nice job! This is very inspiring. Your content is one of my favorites in this topic. And, what is worth adding, watching these repairs and renovations is very relaxing ;) Greetings from Poland!
Thinking quickly, Dave constructs a homemade megaphone using only some string, a squirrel, and a megaphone. Hahaha, jokes aside it's a nice build.
I love these fun little projects! Great work, it turned out awesome
That red housing is just gorgeous
Great build! 👍
That was some terrifying soldering. I thought you were going to straighten those pins first for a better fit.
Dang Elliot has a multiple drawers of rubbers, what a gameboy player.
Great video sir!! Loved it! Nice mod too 😁
Thanks!
Always love your stuff dude, this video is no exception. Laughed out loud at the overly enthusiastic hand movements at 7:42
Are we all just going to ignore the smash ball in the top right corner? 9:30
That was the plan, until *you* had to go and point it out
haha
looks great, dude. trippy that it was done with only spare parts you had
The intro never gets old
Awesome build, brother.
Thank you for explaining what the mod does.
Wow really really cool dude!
I have no intention of actually doing this mod but I still enjoyed watching this video
2 minutes in, and im jealous af of your parts collection
I just started watching your vids, I love them
Wow, this is pretty cool! Thanks for the video!
Man that screen connector is a boss
Fun to watch I also built my own gameboy advance from spare parts.
Great video! Love the new top down view
Finally the Mr.Sheen Gameboy
The color tho..
It has aids?
Man where was this when I was a child I would have done anything to have a light so I could play any time lol
i was hoping you were going to add a white back as the battery cover bc i thought that would look good to match the buttons but still looked good!
13:02
"This is the fun part.. filling up these holes"
I wasn't expecting a chem rag to the dome
Wow you just gave me an idea what’s broken in my gameboy thanks 🙏
Enjoyed the top down!
Hey I just wanted to tell you that the gameboy that has yellowed because of age, you can get the shell and soak it in hydrogen peroxide inside of a transparent sealed container and let the whole thing in the sun light for a day or more. The hydrogen peroxide and the uv light from the sun rays will restore the plastic to it's original color. Be aware that this process may erase any graphics that are on the plastic.
Best vid I've seen of yours, great job
... Elliot sneaks up behind you in a dark alley ... "Smell this!" ... thrusts a cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol over your face ............. you black out only to find all your gameboys gone!!!
Thank god I am not the only one who's solder ends look that bad, not an insult
horror movie from the triggering soldering tech on the bivert install, to the Starwars install of thee ribbon cable "USE THE FORCE LUKE "
I am not an electronics expert, so I probably can't build a Gameboy, but I really want a modded GBA. I had a silver-blue flip open handheld when I was a kid, and I want a really good one for the nostalgic games lol. I'd love to find a clear case so I could see the electronics inside
Awesome might try it one day thanks I like the gameboy & switch you get good games on them both.
Love this style of video! Great stuff!
I’m dying the game your testing is the same game I use to test my games lol
Great video and very interesting. Definitely subscribing. Keep up the good work
Looks awesome.
Great video, but next time I would suggest you use some flux, it makes soldering way easier and makes it look a lot cleaner, especially since you want your solder joints to be good; the cleaner it looks, the more likely of a chance that you did a good job.
It's a good idea to solder over the wires P:
Awesome, more of these please!
Awesome job fella funny enough I’m just about to backlight my play it loud DMG 👍🏻 some great advise 😘
Sweet thinking of doing this now
Looking good Elliot 😍
Whoa whoa whoa, I see a tray full of lightsaber buttons..where's the lightsaber videos Elliot?
Nice one Elliot, you should start selling these !
How brutally you were removing the polarized paper !
Man ! Techs are scared things handle them utmost 'Care' !
