  • EverSD is a custom Evercade cart with a micro sd card slot. Is EverSD worth it? EverSD is marketed as a homebrew development kit for Evercade but often is labeled as an Everdrive for Evercade. One of the biggest strengths of EverSD is the custom patches that have to be done to your Evercade or Evercade VS for the Ever SD to work on it at all. In this video, I talk about the value of EverSD and though it’s not a replacement for an evercade collection but it can really enhance your experience with the Evercade and Evercade VS.
    Disclaimer: if you brick your console using this stuff I am not liable or responsible. This is not tutorial, this is more of an editorial of me, giving my opinions about what this device does, and how it can enhance your experience with Evercade.

    I got my EverSD because of all the cartridge issues people were having. The cartridges are essentially flash drives. Flash drives are prone to get corrupted by removing them without closing all open files or applications. Hot swapping cartridges, which is encouraged, could easily cause the cartridge failure issues. I got my EverSD to backup and restore my cartridges when they fail. Since most of the games are old and can easily be found on the internet there is no point in using the EverSD to get the ROMS. To me it is only about preservation of my cartridges.

    I got a second VS when the Atomic Edition came out. I then modded my original VS with the EverSD firmware. I think the EverSD is great. You can back up all of your carts, so if you ever have an issue (like so many people report) you can restore them. I also like that you can put all of your carts on the SD card of the EverSD and not have to swap carts out to play. Good video. Keep up the great content!

    Great to see you recording outdoors and in different locations for this video :-) I understand both sides of the argument for and against backup devices and you've done a good job shining a light on the positive aspects. I once owned a Romantic Robots Multiface 3 for my ZX Spectrum +3 which allowed you to save your cassette games to 3.0 Disks via the integrated Disk Drive. Like how you're being responsible with your Ever SD, I only backed up the games I owned and it really was a game changer back in the day with easy access, quick loading games. The problem is that anyone could go out and buy an Ever SD, borrow their friends full collection of Evercade Carts, "back them up" and play them whenever they want via the Ever SD. That could be up to £900 worth of software, illegally acquired and contributing nothing to Blaze and investing nothing in the future of the platform. I can definitely see the benefits of the Ever SD but personally couldn't support a product like this. Everyone to their own :-) Keep up the awesome work PK!

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  5 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, it was really cool to record outside , I was hiking with my family and I thought oh this is a great opportunity. I remember some of my other friends from across the pond talking about the days of borrowing C64 games from each other. Like, I said in the video, it seems incredibly pointless to buy an Evercade strictly to play pirated software, there are better ways to play all these games with better screens and more powerful systems that are less money. The whole point of evercade is collecting. I wouldn’t recommend anyone who doesn’t already have an Evercade or VS already who already owns several games, to buy one of these. I think if blaze wasn’t having so many constant issues with cartridges we wouldn’t even need to have this conversation about backing them up. I mean technically speaking I don’t support the company EverSD themselves, after all, I bought mine used 😁. I think patching the Evercade VS With the EverSD patch is still a great option even if you don’t have an EverSD, especially if you plan to never update your Evercade VS again, and of course, there won’t be any future updates for the OG Evercade which blaze has sadly abandoned.

I might be tempted once Evercade goes way of the Dodo but I'm not that fussed at the moment. BTW , this video is not meant to hate on Crazy Burger , he makes enjoyable content, and I enjoy his channel. But the first video people see on EverSD is his video and it really does not paint the best picture of EverSD , nor the most accurate and that’s unfortunate. Is this video a dig at Blaze? Well, they’ve certainly continued to have problems, even with their most recent cartridges and it’s something they need to get a handle on.

    • @CrazyBurger
      @CrazyBurger 5 месяцев назад +6

      My vid is definitely outdated. It was never intended as an ultimate guide or an insight to how it works. My vid almost seems a lifetime ago. I initially done the vid as a acknowledgement that this product exists. I didn't see the point of it at that time. Plus it's background was very questionable. It does appear to have its uses though, such as playing Namco on VS.. backing up collections.. I still have the same opinion though, that it's not for me. I'm not going to support it but absolutely no problem for those that do.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  5 месяцев назад +2

      Of course, I didn't think it was the ultimate guide , especially since it was like 7 mins long. I don't even think my own video is the end all be all on this topic. Did you know you can change the color of the LED light on the VS with a Patched Evercade VS? I didn't even put that in the video. I feel like i don't even know everything there is on this topic. It's not your fault that your video is the most popular one on the topic, no one can fault you for that. I definitely get why people wouldn't be interested in it, it definitely has stigma about it and there is a number of misconceptions about it that hopefully my video addresses some of that. I heard Blaze is working on some updates for the VS and the EXP. Hopefully at some point Blaze can catch up to EverSD and make some of these prominent features pointless.

    • @CrazyBurger
      @CrazyBurger 5 месяцев назад +2

      I honestly would've thought being able to change the LED to any colour shouldve been a standard launch option for the VS. Don't get me wrong, I definitely wanted one in 2021 but a few things changed my mind regarding the products background. I'll just use another handheld for playing non Evercade stuff. $30 is a pretty decent price though.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  5 месяцев назад +1

      I was thinking the exact same thing. Plus, it’s very nice for the people who are new to Evercade who get to look at the all legacy cartridges , especially the ones that are ridiculously expensive now. I’m not trying to be a cynic, but it feels like it’s just kind of an advertisement for cartridges that people don’t already own. On the bright side it sounds like they are going to be doing a better job at updating cartridges going forward, so that’s something.

  • @ClockworkBard
    @ClockworkBard 3 месяца назад +1

    I'm deep into the Evercade ecosystem. I got in early and as a result I'm one of those suckers that owns and buys every cart. That's a pretty significant investment and I refuse to leave their longevity to chance. I got the EverSD exclusively to backup and repair carts.
    I respect the position its existence puts Blaze in when it comes to working with publishers. Publishers are often idiots and aren't willing to deal with the optics of "piracy" in plain view, despite the fact that these are generally 30+ year old games that were already dumped to the Internet before Google existed to look for them. For example, we can probably thank the simple existence of EverSD for Taito and Capcom being too skittish to allow their games on an actual cart. It's dumb, but it is what it is.
    Nonetheless, I feel a lot more confident buying Evercade carts knowing I have a means of keeping them around past the life of the physical product. I probably wouldn't have continued buying them otherwise.

    Thanks for your video! I've been on the fence about ordering one but I think you've convinced me. I didn't realize you could back up the carts as an entire unit like that en-masse and just have them all available. I really like the idea of being able to then take those backups and record them onto something like a BD-R disc as a backup. I think it gives peace of mind knowing that even if Blaze went out of business tomorrow it will be possible to self-maintain the console and games going forward on your own. Can you create your own bitmaps as borders on the 4:3 games too? I'd love to do that, I play around in photoshop a lot and I can imagine creating some of my own custom gaming borders! :-) One question: When you patch your console does this prevent legitimate future firmware updates from Blaze coming through? What if you need those to play the latest carts? Or do they somehow co-exist at the same time?

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you, this was a fun video to make. Yeah it’s a great feeling knowing that when Evercade ceases cart production at some point that I have them backed up. I think that is possible to make your own borders, but I’m not entirely sure a how it works, I’m still learning myself. The folks on the EverSD discord are probably far more knowledgeable than I am. In regards to updates , there hasn’t been a new update since I patched mine so I’m not really sure. Of course, if you had an evercade EXP , you could certainly update your carts with that as well. The nice thing though is if you want to you can unpatch your VS , and then patch it again later. Also I’ve noticed the super pockets do have some built-in updates. The super pocket updated one of my C64 collections and that was before it got its first initial update (which made it possible to play Cathedral and Donut Dodo on the super pocket). I can understand why people would want to unpatched their VS since a lot of people really like game of the month.

      @@PKInTheUniversethanks! I went ahead and ordered one: should receive it by Thursday. I’ve been doing more research on it and another feature that I “think” is possible, is to backup a cart collection and actually add some additional games and then reflash the existing cart with a few more games than they originally had. For example you could backup the sunsoft cart and perhaps add a few more Sunsoft games you might have the ROMs for and flash it all back to the cart and have an “enhanced” Sunsoft collection cart. I imagine there’s probably a lot of left over blank space on a lot of the carts, so perhaps they can be filled up to the brim? 😄. Once a cart is actually reflashed like that I imagine it’s like any other cart and would even work in the EXP as long as the games are all using Blaze’s internal emulator (not retroarch). So that’s another way to “use” the EverSD that some people might not have thought of.

    That was one long video, With way too much talking.
    I wouldn’t mind Hearing about the everSD, But, I had to admit I fell out early on, and skipped a bit, and then a bit…

      Guess I gotta work harder to appeal to people with extreme ADHD who need to be entertained every 3 seconds 😆

      I didn’t lie about anything. Funny, the creators of EverSD liked my video. Maybe you just have a comprehension skill issue.

      Yeah, I’m just gonna do whatever I want. You’re more than welcome to go to the better videos out there on the topic, or to make one on your own. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Doc, are you telling me this video’s worse than crashing the DeLorean into a manure truck? C’mon, it’s not that bad!

    Just a device to encourage piracy. Not why people get into Evercade in my view. Stay well clear.

    After buying 25 carts im done buying these games. Not that evercade is a bad system. Its that i want to start buying neo Geo pocket color games (repos) because i feel like even if its an repo it seems like that would hold better value.

    I wondering if it is worth getting just for backing up all my orignal carts. I don't need to worry about bricking my cartridges with an update if I had an EverSD.

      Absolutely! To me, that’s the most important reason.
