Seems like a pretty solid product. I'm glad that the company is having success and that these games are being preserved and re-introduced to new generations. I honestly wasn't sold on the handheld because i wasn't impressed by the screen size, screen aspect ratio, screen quality, and initial software selection, but it seems like this console and the current software selection might just have convinced me to pull the trigger.
It looks like they are going to do a revision of the handheld soon, they have advised that it will announce it at the end of the year.
I really like the handheld. Some of these older games (particularly the Lynx games) just don't good blown up on a big HDTV
do you work for them? this is literally the same thing as buying a rasppie and 40 memory cards. YOU ARE the whale they are looking for. it isnt even fpga
Nice name. Fits
The Namco carts don't work on the Evercade VS as they are only licensed for the Handheld
This make the Amico look even worse (somehow). Physical carts, real games, & a reasonable price point.
Yeah, I just don't see the appeal of the Amico.
I know it's a niche system but WHO is the audience?
Maybe the LeapFrog market?
Will they try to get it placed on toy aisles at Wal-Mart?
Can’t wait till my pre-order comes in. As for the Amico, too many blunders on their end. I don’t see that system succeeding
Real games? Not really. Dumping roms from a cartridge to play them on emulators is not like the Real console hw experience. Just a waste of resources. Its funny that mjr makes a shitty Video about the amazing MiSTer but praises this crap.
@@ninetendopesaitama2107 That's a very niche platform you either have to build yourself or buy pre-built for $500+.
Not even close to the same market or convenience.
That's about the same as shouting "RASPBERRY PI" when the Nintendo Classic Edition consoles were released.
MJR laid out the appeal of the Evercade in this video and the emulation isn't bad at all.
You're emulation is bad and you should feel bad!!
Fantastic review! I have the handheld and all the carts. I pre-ordered the Founder Edition and even more pumped to get the VS.
The VS Console is a nice addition to the handheld if you ask me.
Curious how the original controller plays 😅
I think... i need to wait a long time before it get's on stock here 😨
Thanks for the extended video review i'm looking forward to this product.
retrobit sega saturn pad instead bro
cheap, 2.4ghz low latency wireless &
includes an additional adapter to use on your real systems
also a 360 arcade stick seems like a neat idea too
liking this a LOT more than the "retrofreak" systems
@@RandoLePerson i was on the fence
i think im grabbing one for christmas lol
They hit the nail on the head with the collectable side. For me, when you buy a cartridge, you actually play it rather than downloading full roms set with 1000's of games and then never play them. Got the Founders Edition and can't wait for the Bitmap collection.
It still being emulated 😂
@@ElRealPetChicken yes but it’s also legally emulated.
@@ElRealPetChicken yes but you get to actually play it, didn't hear the guy?
@@souljastation5463 As if it's only possible to play if you bough it physically. I own a retropie and have beaten a lot of games in it.
I own a lot of media I've legally bought but have never read/watched/played/listened to. Collecting physical media does not solve backlogs.
Another great video and breakdown!! Stumbled across your GAMER EATS videos the other day. WE NEED A NEW ONE! Much love and respect my man!
Good video! I preordered the founders day edition of the VS Evercade system! Looking forward to it coming out! Games look nice!
That "in the interest of full disclosure" opener sounded a little bit like Lon Seidman, and I love it! His transparency is something everyone should aspire to, and I know he mentions your channel pretty often too when talking about retro gaming. I love to see the overlap!
Cool review Jason. I’m liking the evercade system a lot.
If they ever offer Midway arcade collections I’d definitely buy this.
Yeah some heavy hitters like Konami, Capcom, or Midway would be awesome. Who knows, it's definitely possible
Yeah that would be cool. WB apparently likes to sit on those properties however. Other than the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection and Midway Arcade Origins, I don't believe they have really messed with that.
Don’t wast your money. You can buy so many different collections like that on the Microsoft store. No need to buy a whole console for it.
Konami and Capcom I would rather have
We now have Capcom and Taito, Midway and Konami probably aren't far off.
I'm really excited for this as I love physical cartridges! Love your videos as usual! Thanks for the heads up on this console!
The cartridge idea is what drew me to the original handheld. I own every cartridge they have and on preorder. I ordered the founder’s edition VS console and am very excited to receive it. I will continue buying their cartridges to keep my collection complete. Evercade hit a home run IMO.
Agreed 100 percent 🔥
Agreed and I have all the same as well.
Its ok for people with low standards that value sliding in a cartridge over accuracy and quality.
@@StarshipGhost no
I like the fact theft they included Amiga games for once.
Great video MJR!!
I think this would be a great console for younger kids. These retro games are much easier to play and $130 is much cheaper entry point for parents.
Urgh.....retro games are some of the hardest games around man. LOL
@@antwanefort I think OP said "easier to play" as "easier to get into'. Like "pick up and play". As opposed to modern games with tons of mechanics and tutorials.
@@DanoLefourbe Oh. you mean easier to just start up and play. Not easy as in the difficult level. Yeah , that makes more sense.
@@DanoLefourbe I agree. "Easier to play" means "easier to pick up, but hard to master." Which is perfect for younger kids and adults.
Precisely. Isn't it interesting I could beat hard ass games as a 10yo. More patience I guess 😀
Nice, going to pick it up when its sold locally here :)
Great review 🤘🏻
Thank you for helping me discover a new way of play
Great review as always MJR!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@MetalJesusRocks Hard to think I was in my 30s when I first started watching your vids... and now I am actually in my 50s! How did that happen? Keep up the great work
If you have the handheld and have the carts, this is an obvious buy. Starting with it home only is great for people getting started in this stuff. In my case I have over 400 retro games, and had pre-ordered a Polymega...yeah, it's a heck of a lot more expensive, but with the fact that I am getting it already, this isn't a console I see a need for myself for. If that didn't exist - I would be all over this.
This is pretty awesome. I really love what they're doing with these games. The reasonable price point is my favorite part
I just bought the handheld and a bunch of the game packs, after watching your reviews! Looking forward to receiving them! :D
Thanks for the great review. Looks like a must buy for me.
I just purchased the Evercade vs today at a convention and I’m excited to try it
I’ve been a fan of the handheld EC since launch. The VS seems like a wonderful evolution in the Evercade ecosystem.
Great video.
In regards the ‘secret’ menu; I head that MadLittlePixel used it to unlock hidden games. I need to check his video
Thanks for the info, good review. I been curious as to what Evercade was exactly and what it could do, learned that here and now have a good feel as to if I want to get one now
Needs more Metal Jesus crew reunion videos. 😤
Thanks for the review, I now have the VS pre-ordered. I already have the handheld version, and love the Data East and Jaleco collections, but the one I am really looking forward to is the Renovation/Telnet collection.
I love the handheld and definitely getting this console too! It's just awesome!
You’re the man MJR. Do a video on star wars games! Most of them are retro now anyway so it fits with the theme of the channel
I love the couch co-op. I like online, but I love when people make things to play at home together
Totally agree
Looks awesome!
I actually kind of want one now. Would be cool if they had an rgb option to play on a CRT. How cool would that have been?
Oh jeez. That would be AMAZING!
Agreed.
This is on our wish list. Technically you can plug in a HDMI to RF but we want to look at possibly adding a "CRT" friendly mode in the future.
Yes agreed. Would be awesome if that was built on the console, but you can a HDMI to s-video converter.
I use that with my TurboGrafx 16 mini on my Sony CRT and it looks and plays great as if it was an original TG16 console
A DAC’s (digital to analog converter) not so expensive nowadays. I have one, i can play my PS4 on CRT.
got mine pre ordered!
Great vid and review!
Such a cool idea!!!
Holy crap this looks cool. The price, design, color scheme, carts, collectivity, four controller ports, ease of hook up...wow.
Are they selling these in stores? Also thanks for mentioning which games don't work. Because I would have bought the Namco games.
Also, how do you get extra controllers?
Yay nice to see some love for Xenon 2, my alltime favourite Shmup!
I like this console , well thought of! They did a great job!
Wait, I forgot this was coming out!
I'm looking forward to giving this a try. I didn't pick up the handheld, but I bought the Xeno Crisis/Tanglewood cart just to have a physical copy of Xeno Crisis. The manuals are a big selling point for me. The price is right, I can totally get behind this.
Great review really like the vs
Glad you enjoyed it
You don't happen to have the new Atari VCS Classic Controller do you, Metal Jesus? If so, any chance it works on the Evercade VS? Watching you play Warlords and seeing Pong in their list makes me think compatibility with the Atari VCS Classic would be a huge win.
(and don't think I'm not eyeing Night Driver on that Evercade cartridge with enthusiasm)
Looks interesting. Was considering getting one of these for the living room for something my nieces could play when they come over. Seems like a good thing to have in a living room outside of the main game room for recreational fun or if you have family or non-gamers over.
It would be kind of neat if it continued the "Vs" theme by allowing two games to be played at once side by side (on a widescreen TV).
Best video so far with this console.
Just picked one up today. Very impressed so far, love the dual cartridge feature. Unlocking 7 free games is pretty neat too. Just wish I could play Capcom on here with my Astro City Arcade stick (yes it actually works with a bit of effort!).
I had ordered the Founders Edition and I'm very excited to do my own unboxing! Although I do hope they get the Namco cartridges sorted out. I get that they don't wanna pay extra to license those cartridges on the VS. But since it was included in the UK handheld package, and especially since it doesn't display an error message when inserted. I think the confusion about it may well be pretty bad. With that said, they've got alot of great cartridges out (twenty plus) and more on the way to play!
We thought this was a great point from MJR and we are implementing this right now for day 1 patch :) also fwiw we are still in process of trying to sort it out. Look forward to seeing your video!
I think I'll add this to my to buy list
Thank you ! An Evercade video with scanlines examples ! I can buy now the system Evercade, really great with Pixel Perfect and subtle scanlines ;)
I would of liked to have seen the handheld plugged in and used like a controller. But also are there any console you haven’t done a “buying guide” for yet?
This looks great, can't wait to get one and play the new arcade carts. Thanks for the review, very helpful 👍
What's the difference between the arcade versions and the... other versions?
@@Inconvenient_NPC The arcade carts are actual original arcade versions of games and the standard ones are usually various home console ports
@@retroimportgamer513 - That's interesting, so is there a difference as far as content is concerned?
@@Inconvenient_NPC There are different games on all the carts yes
@@retroimportgamer513 - Got it, thanks very much mate! I have mine pre-ordered
I really want one of these now
Are all of the Evercade carts still available or are some of them hard to find already? I don't want to start collecting them and find that I'm paying inflated prices on the secondary market.
It is great to hear that they are successful. There are not many ways of legally playing these old games and if they seem to understand what the community likes. Good for them. Hope, they will grow.
Awesomeness video
Been thinking a good while and think ill get the VS and hoping for some beat em up releases
I received a handheld for my birthday a year ago. Honestly, as a collector, it is kind of awesome. I may have to pickup the console when I get the chance. My main hope is that we might get to see some old PAL exclusives.
I got the handheld, all the catridges + the console on pre-order. Heavily excited for this!
There have been some problems in the beginning, but nothing they didn't fix fast with a firmware update + they even ship new cartridges in case something goes wrong on your end. I wish it would feel a bit sturdier though, the plastic screen on the handheld is my main concern + the d-pad feels a bit floaty. Other than that, as a customer I had a great experience with the support & the handheld. I don't switch games as fast as I would with access to thousands of roms where I would just try everything out or couldn't even decide what to play lol.
I got both consoles and collecting the games... I feel like a kid, the format just brought me back to my childhood
Looks like a pretty cool system. Hope they continue to add more games for it.
This seems pretty awesome
This looks awesome. I already have a RPi, but the look of this system, the cartridges you can collect, the nice game boxes. Id love to buy one of these.
Nice job testing the multiplayer.
I cannot find the console version only the handheld. Where could I find one Metal Jesus? I really want one of these because of you I never knew this existed and thanks for that.
Hi Metal Jesus! Can you make a list of the games in the video? Thanx a lot!
I wasn't keen on the handheld, but I bought the Premium bundle last week and found I liked it so much, I ran out and bought a couple more cartridges. Sure I guess if you put in a lot of time and effort you could achieve much the same with a Retro-pie, but I like the convenience of this. It really is put together in a slick, smoothly-operating manner.
What game is at 17:05? Looks like snake for an older console? It looks neat I'd love to play this version.
It's beautiful. I hope they release more arcade games. Capcom, especially.
Thank´s for the great Vid. I can´t wait getting my pre-ordered VS next Month.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it!
@@MetalJesusRocks Thank you!
dude it was delayed until early 2022, OEB Pete has all the details
@@sakku911 I live in Germany and my Amazon pre-order ist still set for December 16th. And even if this should get delayed too, that´s not the end of world and I wait for it.
Where you find these things? thats so cool
Nice review! I’m waiting for the Duke Nukem edition to ship. Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks👍
I want one pretty bad. I love what they are doing and playing officially licensed carts is awesome. I want the EXP handheld too
Great video, especially when you said millimeter.
Looks pretty awesome. It's really too bad about Namco - those are honestly some of my favorite arcade games.
I can not wait to get my in January. By the way, Secret is a SECRET DUH! LOL, Nice Video man, thank you so much!
I love both my Evercade and my Evercade vs. ❤
I follow all these retro systems mainly for the train crashes they usually are (coleco chameleon anyone?). This peeks my interest, a genuine system pried very fairly and it just works. Great review Jason, TY.
"piques my interest"
Not saying this as some sort of insult, just spreading the word.
I am a big Evercade fan, even though at first I was sceptical too. It's the combination of indie/homebrew and rarer retro titles that make it appealing. The collector in me does love seeing all those carts. I pre-ordered a Founders VS System (in black) to match my black limited edition handheld. One thing you didn't mention in the video - the Evercade handheld can be used as a controller too, using a link cable (there is one in the Founders box, and also available separately). And according to Evercade's social media accounts, putting in certain combinations of two cartridges will unlock something extra - much like the old Konami carts for the MSX where you could unlock stuff, or the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on tech. Can't wait to try that out...
I really like the Evercade project, but the labels are all over the place 2:58 some left some right most of them not centered.
I really hate that so much...
Cannot be that hard to make a unified box, can it?
waiting for the Sabec games collection lol
I can wait
I'm thinking of grabbing one myself.
What gsme is that with the lizard at the screen at 1:06 and the planes flying by right after?
I have the handheld and fully intend to get Vs. One thing (which I don't think you mention, but it was on another review) is that you can power this simply from a USB port on a TV. That might seem like a daft, tiny detail to love; but to me, as someone who want's to cut back on the use of plugs, it's just a nice touch, that they obviously thought about. But yes, I intend to get this for Christmas. I find myself defaulting to my Evercade Handheld, over using my RG351P each time, due to ease of use.
The Secret thing is if you have 2 carts in, you can unlock an extra game with certain combos I believe
I want to get both of them! 😄
Well done. I'm about ready to purchase the premium. (glad you noted that the two NAMCO collections did NOT work on the premium. Sadly, those were the one's I wanted first...o, well)
Did they ever fix the issue with the namco collections not playing on the evercade vs?
amazon says jan 2022
might consider preordering
big data east fan & for $100 my nephews might love it
I'm curious about the possibility of running umm "homebrew" on this things, could be interesting
Menu looks easy and clear. Nice moments to see Frog, Snafu and Burger Time :-)
This is awesome.
Very interesting console. I'm curious to see what the reaction to an Evercade Everdrive cart would be.
Excellent video . Detailed review and im surprisingly impressed overall by this little unit . May look into getting one
I hope you consider reviewing the 6 newest cartridges seeing as most of us will now have to wait until mid to late December or possibly even January for our copies - either separately or all in one video.
What is that very last game in the last 5 seconds, the beatemup?
I have the handheld and all games, I also ordered the Founder edition, and I will continue supporting Evercade.... but, why is the image blurry? Is it applying a bilinear filter? If so, it should be configurable. Also, I really hope that the screen resolution is configurable. I would like to have 480p/720p with pixel perfect scaling to use on a PC CRT monitor or to downscale to 240p using RetroTINK 5x, for example.,,, of course a DAC interface would be great, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Thank you for the review!!!!
Maybe the secret code will allow access to the Namco titles once they secure the license?
What was that yellow fox in the forest game at 10:04?
New to retro gaming. I still have my old N64, game gear and GB colour. I don't play any modern consoles so not very good with hardware etc. Will this machine work in the UK?
I have the handheld and I love it. Not sure if I am going to get the VS or not but it looks pretty cool.
