Benchmade has about a 10% premium based on name/reputation. The rest of the price is due to great quality. Some people want a $10 car wash and are happy, some want a $1k detail.
I pull my knife out probably 20 times a day at work and i will never give up my benchmades for a flipper. The smooth one handed operation alone is worth the price of an axis lock. Not to mention the high quality steel of the benchmades.
I really love my kizer drop bear, it comes with a few sets of springs to adjust the tension of the axis lock and it's about half the cost of a bug out. I've only owned one Benchmade and handled a few others but I prefer the kizer. You may want to check it out next time you need a knife. Aluminum handle scales though, not sure what work you do so you may want to consider slipping, but I think they offer other materials.

I absolutely dislike putting my finger in line of the blade closing. That is the biggest advantage of a Benchmade. I also can tune those exactly to my liking and there is a ton of aftermarket parts and the warranty has had me covered, even if I screw up myself. (Grounded down the thumb stud.)
I remember buying a first production Saibu brand new and it was completely dull and the cross bar was so crunchy and stiff you couldn't even thumb flick it. I sent it back 3 times and it was still a POS, I bought a Kizer mini Domin for $50 on a whim and the build quality was so much better I never went back
An I'm out here with a CRKT M16-01. For being a cheap knife it's held up damn well and we in 8 months strong although I do have to grease it almost daily
Everyone is really using the "it wont stand against hard use" like it a bush craft knife. It's a pocket knife. It's not meant to be a survival knife. It's still going to cut. Difference is you aren't paying 100+ for flimsy scales. I love both and carry both occasionally but it comes to budget, swiss takes it.
No very different left hand people have difficulty with some frame locks due to accidentally applying pressure on the lock causing difficulty opening liner locks don’t have that problem as they are internal however frame locks are significantly stronger locks then liner locks since the lock is part of the handle unlike the liner lock that is part of the internal liner usually made from a weaker metal then the frame lock
Benchmade as a whole is over-rated. I have had a few and they are good. The bugout is actually my least favorite version. I'm not a fan of no liners. The weight savings never justify the flimsy feeling I get from it.
@@Huckleberry68 I actually pretty much agree. The hogue deka is better, has magnacut, and you can get some nice scales for it for a good price and have a much better knife than the bugout for still less.
Looking at the blade condition, I would agree with you here. For people who carry knives to maybe open a box or cut a small string, then this is a great option. For those of us who's knife looks years old after 2 weeks of using the tool, then no Swiss Tech is not the way.
the benchmade freek is what the bugout should of been from the start. if youre at all interested in a bugout get the Freek or mini freek instead!!! its pretty much the same exact thing but way thicker & more durable & not flimsy at all!! I fucking love my M4 Freek paired with my spyderco para 3
Decided to try this after losing a paramilitary 2 and carrying an ultratech I was tired of babying. Gonna beat on this thing and not care about if I lose it or not. This thing feels like a 70 or 80 dollar knife for a fraction of the cost.
@@AGPfacecastI’ve had my 30 dollar Swiss Army knife from when I was a kid, and later a buck 110, (45 Canadian dollars LOL) and they do literally everything I ever need a knife for. People want fancy expensive stuff and argue grinds and steels but man, if it cuts and can be sharpened and last decades without falling apart, it’s perfect
I have the Wurdig and the fixed blade Stahlern and they are above their price point in quality and performance. Awesome knives, very well made and comparable to knives by other companies for three and four times the price. Highly recommend
I love this knife. I've realized after many years of buying more expensive knives that they often aren't really better just because of the price. The design is great and the fact that it's not a pocket hog has me carrying this one exclusively lately.
Love that swiss tech got that one and then the fixed blade that matches. Love the color love the price however, Hate the names, can't remember them for the life of me. And the micarta on both of them were frayed at the ends and had to melt them off. Other then that awesome blades good features just wish the micarta was better looked after but for 40 bucks available at Walmart I can't be too mad. Also wish the folder was lefty friendly for the thumb disc.
Oh dude that knife is amazing for the money… I hardness tested mine at work and got 59hrc which for aus 8 is pretty solid.. it’s held an awesome safe too.. it’s my work blade.. I ground the flipper off tho
It probably has a higher HRC than Benchmade's if comparing the same blades steels. Why can't Benchmade heat-treated like Spyderco does🤷. I heard like a year ago Benchmade was supposedly upping their HRC do to popular demand, so if true good on them for accepting feedback 👍.
It’s not that I have anything against Benchmade, just that this knife feels so comfortable. I’ve also beat the crap out of it and had no issues at all.
@@lovescamaros1 If Benchmade used AUS 8 it would likely be softer than this manufacturer🤷. Now like I said Benchmade is now supposedly running higher hrc's across all blade steels. There's an entire spreadsheet of people HRC testing knives from all companies. And Benchmade was running most of their blade steals on the softer side, especially compared to Spyderco. That's not my claim, that is the claim of the calibrated Rockwell tester. I love the fact that people are testing hrc's, it's nice to know before spending your hard-earned money on a soft 59 HRC M-390 knife 🤷.
@@AGPfacecast in my line of work aus 8 isn't worth my time. I cut a lot of heavy cardboard, belts, bands, plastics, heavy wall tube and i have to strop it every week to even keep up. I stick with high toughness steels that hold up better in the long run. I use aus-8 stuff to open mail.
I quit carrying pocket knives completely. I've been using a Civivi fixed blade with a pocket scabbard. It's pretty hard to find a folder that can stand up to 8 inches of solid steel. And, I use this knife for everything, slicing, chopping, prying, scraping, hammering, you name it. And, it looks brand new and a few swipes on the leather and it's shaving sharp.
Sheeeet i just watched a 180$ benchmade bugout get broken by hand and i went a got s Ozark trail camping knife the 7cr17mov 6.5 with a kydex sheath snd a tec loc for like 18$ in store😊i do own one Benchmade and it's a push dagger
LOVE your content. I've owned some benchmade knives before...All i can say about benchmade is: Overpriced. Really overpriced. I'm wanting to pick up the swiss tech Stahler fixed blade knife from walmart over the buck 119 and save $40 for a knife that will probably perform better at around half the price. Thanks for the vid.
I would hope even the cheapest ball bearing knives were as smooth as a bronze washer Benchmade knife. Ball bearing pivots are for people who sit at a desk and flip their knives all day and call it hard use.
I quit Benchmade when I learned about the button lock. It's like an axis lock without being a pain in the but to clean and you don't have to worry about breaking omega springs.
If I’m not mistaken it’s on par with 440 which is good and plenty. Doesn’t hold an edge as long as others but hey what’s a short time on the ceramic and strop especially since it sharpens easily
I just got my first Benchmade for $200. Then I bought Camillus for $20 in Walmart. Guess which one was sharper out of box? 😏 But, Benchmade is prettier to look at.
Nothing beats benchmade for edge retention. Opening paint tins, cutting through steel and aluminium swarthe from grinding, hacking timber and itll still shave hairs after months of use. I only recently got into bemchmade because im in australia and its a huge price mark up to get one here and i own shit loads of knives even custom knives that cost way more than any pocket knife and i still think my bugout i bought is a better knife to carry than anything else i have tried. If i was to just cut cardboard and tape and shit and not a tradie my standards would make me think a knife like a civici elementum is top tier just ubfortunately the blades fucking suck on all other knives regardless of what steel they recon theyre using
Yeah no I’ve used all knives from 420C to Aus 8, 1095 high carbon steel, 1050, and premium steels s30v s45vn s90v and none of the cheaper knives held an edge close to what’s considered a reasonable lasting edge for a knife, most dull within the first few days meanwhile I’ve used my saddle mountain skinner for everything from skinning catfish or cutting meat on occasions, opened plastic packaging with it and it held an edge better than I expected, but comparing cheaper steels to s90v, s45vn, s30v is crazy.
Benchmade's prices are insane now and their designs now aren't really my taste anymore. I like the Stryker series, the sequel, the foray, the 530 and 531
Thats why im a Spyderco guy. If you find a better knife than the manix-2, para-military-2, para-3, natve-5 or delica-4, let me know! I hear the grumblings from here! Lol.
Needs a better locking system. Not my favorite blade shape, bet for the money nothing comes close. Would use for work and not be so upset when I misplace my Spyderco.
For me, the only BM I would ever spend my money on is an Adamas in MagnaCut or CruWear. It’s expensive but, a great knife nonetheless. Other than that, I rather spend BM prices on SpyderCo., Demko, Les George, McNees, ProTech, etc..
Benchmades are priced like 50-100$ above their quality level. They are arguably not a premium knife anymore. Example: I paid 180$ for a Nimravous and Benchmade left the laser cut finish around the entire non sharpened circumference of the knife. Its not even a premium steel its 154cm. If you understand manufacturing you can just see in benchmades products the shortcuts they take. I think companies like Kershaw are higher quality for less money.
I owned a real nice $250 bench made knife. Dropped in the river while I was fishing and never bought another expensive knife again. Most cheap knives will do the job the only difference is it doesn’t hurt so much when you lose it
No one claims the Bugout is a bad knife But for 200$ You can just do a lot better The Bel-air is 150$ The iridium is 65$ Both of those are a lot smoother to operate then the bugout, and the belair is built in the US The Hogue Deka is 150$ The CJRB Prado is 55$ and is a lot lighter, while being a bigger knife The steels are different, but at the end of the day, 99% of people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a 60HRC bugout vs a 60 HRC Deka The extra 35-50$ for a bugout with no better scales, or for 100$ more for the same scales as everyone else is doing Is just stupid pricing The Bugout was awesome when it was new, but many many brands are just making a better Bugout With the Bugout, I get finger fatigue after about 2 dozen deployments and closings With the Iridium, I can go all day without getting fatigue Everyone has moved on, Benchmade has not Colt still made great guns in the 90’s, but they started to lose money cause they refused to innovate, and relied on their name to keep them moving forward AUS8 is trash, but with something like ARPM 9 or Magnacut The 30CV in the Bugout just isn’t special
You didn't mention what the steel was. I imagine it's a basic 8cr maybe? But that's still more than good enough for edc uses. I totally agree that Benchmade has started smoking crack the last few years with their prices, it's gotten ridiculous. But it's also fair to say that for the steep price tag you pay, you are getting a premium qc, fit and finish and even their base models offer some good steels. I myself wouldn't spend the money they're charging these days on one of their knives, but I've handled a few and they have been very nice. I actually bought several clones off a-express, including a bugout and taggedout clone and have been blown away by what China can produce for a low price of $15-$25. The fit, finish and action aren't exactly on the same level as the real ones, but they are damn close and the action is great. And yeah, you're probably getting a 440c on the blades but they have all held a great edge and taken an incredibly sharp edge too.
I don't understand why the need to put an entire American company down just to elevate an opinion of a budget Chinese knife. Just review the Swiss Tech. I'm sure it's a solid knife with a lot of bang for the buck. But you said it right at the last phrase..."For awhile"

@@Huckleberry68 I actually pretty much agree. The hogue deka is better, has magnacut, and you can get some nice scales for it for a good price and have a much better knife than the bugout for still less.
Hate the stock bugout too. A must os to change the scales. 25 dollar scales from china via amazon is a biiiig upgrade! 😂
I like the buck bantam, only 420 steel but it works for me. Had a benchmade griptiallian but it was stolen from among other knives.
What blade steel
Aus8 Japanese Steel
Looking at the blade condition, I would agree with you here. For people who carry knives to maybe open a box or cut a small string, then this is a great option.
For those of us who's knife looks years old after 2 weeks of using the tool, then no Swiss Tech is not the way.
I've been debating getting it. Will do now thanks.
Great looking knife design!
the benchmade freek is what the bugout should of been from the start. if youre at all interested in a bugout get the Freek or mini freek instead!!! its pretty much the same exact thing but way thicker & more durable & not flimsy at all!!
Never hurts to try different knives for EDC, you never know what could surprise you !
Exactly!!!!
@@lord_haven1114 agreed.
Noticed Swiss tech knives as Walmart recently that looked very nice. The name is all that kept me from buying. Perhaps I'll give one a try.
I’m gonna get a bug out and make it titanium or Micarta scales
Where did you get the lanyard?
I made it
Where is it made? What kind of steel is it?
Aus8 steel made in China, but the quality is impressive
What steel is it made from? Liner lock is a nonstarter for me.
aus-8
I have the Wurdig and the fixed blade Stahlern and they are above their price point in quality and performance. Awesome knives, very well made and comparable to knives by other companies for three and four times the price. Highly recommend
Question, for the Stahlern do ypu know if the clip can come off of the sheath?
I love this knife. I've realized after many years of buying more expensive knives that they often aren't really better just because of the price.
The design is great and the fact that it's not a pocket hog has me carrying this one exclusively lately.
Awesome
How much was the paycheck?
It’s just a knife. You fan boys that care too much probably don’t even use one every day.
You had me at "Green Micarta". darkens over time until one day...Ox Blood, and still grippy
I’ve also beat the crap out of it and had no issues at all.
doubtful as aus 8 is pretty soft and crappy.
@@lovescamaros1 go look at some for the tests I’ve done on them. They held up and no dulling.
What do you think about the SOG terminus XR?
Idk. Haven’t used one. I’d test it though.
Try the QSP penguin in blue jean micarta.
I have two of those. I did the abuse test on one. It stood up.
Looks thicker, heavier than the bugout? 🤔
I would hope even the cheapest ball bearing knives were as smooth as a bronze washer Benchmade knife. Ball bearing pivots are for people who sit at a desk and flip their knives all day and call it hard use.
Well maybe you should read the pinned comment.
Just saw this at Walmart and it looked impressive. Thanks for the review
I quit Benchmade when I learned about the button lock. It's like an axis lock without being a pain in the but to clean and you don't have to worry about breaking omega springs.
At 30.00 you can't go wrong. AUS-8 isn't that bad Imo. Sharpens up great.
If I’m not mistaken it’s on par with 440 which is good and plenty. Doesn’t hold an edge as long as others but hey what’s a short time on the ceramic and strop especially since it sharpens easily
Yeah, not that bad… unless compared to S30V.
940 is one of the sturdier knives for work . Most people dont need 940, but those who need a tuff folder (for work) to mee 940 is the best choice.
how much did they pay you?
Didn’t pay me a dime. I bought these
You had me at wardick...
I just got my first Benchmade for $200. Then I bought Camillus for $20 in Walmart. Guess which one was sharper out of box? 😏
But, Benchmade is prettier to look at.
How light is it? That's why I love my bugout, it dissappears in the pocket
It’s actually pretty light weight with the Micarta.
Benchmade's prices are insane now and their designs now aren't really my taste anymore. I like the Stryker series, the sequel, the foray, the 530 and 531
Is it made in america
Thats why im a Spyderco guy.
If you find a better knife than the manix-2, para-military-2, para-3, natve-5 or delica-4, let me know!
I hear the grumblings from here! Lol.
I need the axis lock this don't have it and ruins it for me
The Kersha Iridium and Belair, or the CJRB Prado might be something you’d like
Cheaper
And better then the Bugout
This for $20 or BM for $150. Hmm?
Liner locks are on the weak side. I do like that fixed blade that Swiss Tech makes.
Can't wait for the white wurdig to drop again.
I quit Benchmade when they sold out gun owners.
A friend gave me a Swiss tech I love it it is a great knife
Needs a better locking system. Not my favorite blade shape, bet for the money nothing comes close. Would use for work and not be so upset when I misplace my Spyderco.
How much did they pay you to do this? It wasn’t enough…
Didn’t pay me a dime. I bought this and have used it a full yr. I have no issues with this knife. It has been great.
For me, the only BM I would ever spend my money on is an Adamas in MagnaCut or CruWear. It’s expensive but, a great knife nonetheless. Other than that, I rather spend BM prices on SpyderCo., Demko, Les George, McNees, ProTech, etc..
I love mine!
Theyd have something if it had the same style lock.
I've never owned a liner lock that didn't fail after some time. Many out the box.
Only problem I found with them is the pocket clip, that's literally all that I see wrong
I quit BM a long time ago, when their prices doubled. Remember when a griptillian was under $100?
I owned a real nice $250 bench made knife. Dropped in the river while I was fishing and never bought another expensive knife again. Most cheap knives will do the job the only difference is it doesn’t hurt so much when you lose it
If the Bugout was a bad knife it wouldn’t be the knife all other edc knife’s are compared to. Love the Bugout. Especially over a liner lock & Aus8.
No one claims the Bugout is a bad knife
But for 200$
You can just do a lot better
The Bel-air is 150$
The iridium is 65$
Both of those are a lot smoother to operate then the bugout, and the belair is built in the US
The Hogue Deka is 150$
The CJRB Prado is 55$ and is a lot lighter, while being a bigger knife
The steels are different, but at the end of the day, 99% of people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a 60HRC bugout vs a 60 HRC Deka
The extra 35-50$ for a bugout with no better scales, or for 100$ more for the same scales as everyone else is doing
Is just stupid pricing
The Bugout was awesome when it was new, but many many brands are just making a better Bugout
With the Bugout, I get finger fatigue after about 2 dozen deployments and closings
With the Iridium, I can go all day without getting fatigue
Everyone has moved on, Benchmade has not
Colt still made great guns in the 90’s, but they started to lose money cause they refused to innovate, and relied on their name to keep them moving forward
AUS8 is trash, but with something like ARPM 9 or Magnacut
The 30CV in the Bugout just isn’t special
And yeah, you're probably getting a 440c on the blades but they have all held a great edge and taken an incredibly sharp edge too.
aus 8
I don't understand why the need to put an entire American company down just to elevate an opinion of a budget Chinese knife. Just review the Swiss Tech. I'm sure it's a solid knife with a lot of bang for the buck. But you said it right at the last phrase..."For awhile"
Rewatch the video. I NEVER said anything bad about Benchmade. I said “I found something I like better.” That a personal preference. And yes, I’m still carrying the Wurdig. 🤘 thanks for watching.
Nice specimen, and Aus 8 is ok...but much better stuff out there. I just ordered a Vosteed Gator...mircata, 14C28N blase, 65 bucks....if swiss tech used a more high level steel...not even premium...then I'd be more interested
Try the Benchmade Oeser. Gives you that flipper action that is addicting. If only I could afford to carry a real Oeser from Jared.
Very nice!! For a liner lock.
