How To Treat Dry Skin + Acne

  • Having acne is frustrating enough but for those of us with dry skin, it's particularly challenging as most acne treatments are aimed at normal - oily skin types. There is also a fear that by treating dry skin properly, one will clog their pores or exacerbate more breakouts. Through my own journey, I've found the opposite to be true. The only focus I have during breakouts is to strengthen my skin barrier and alleviate any inflammation. Dry skin is sensitive skin, and stripping it further is counterproductive by exacerbating further inflammation. Whether the Winter might be causing seasonal dryness, or you're on acne medication, or you just have dry skin and adult acne, here are some simple routine tips that have helped me through my breakouts. Enjoy! #acnetips

If you think having acne is bad, let me tell you having acne-prone, extremely dry/dehydrated/sensitive/rosacea skin is a nightmare... So difficult to treat and manage, very few products that won't irritate it, and you spend fortunes trying on new stuff hoping it will help. It takes a lot of money, time and energy to deal with it. Try the Avene Tolerance Emulsion. It doenst contain any pore clogging ingredients and is just amazing. Due to my breakouts this year i just stuck to the light Emulsion and paired it with hydrating serums any. Just to be safe. They do have a thicker creme, but i didnt want to risk it

    • @xxhuntressx

Just wanna say I had the same thing (but instead of white heads, the moisturizer just didn't work for longer than 20 minutes- then I'd go back to shedding snake lol). What worked for me was trying the "7 layer skin" method where you focus on layers. It made the moisturizer not matter as much because the hydration came from the toner- it also felt like the inside of my skin was actually hydrated. It's so weird, growing up I would try and find the thickest cream, yet none of them would do much. Turns out layering a hydrating toner just happened to work for me.

Same nothing has ever worked for my skin i have lots of skin colored bumps on my forehead and my cheeks constantly breaks out with pimples. This product actually works. Within 1 use u can really see the difference in your skin. My skin started peeling and became really dry and dehydrated for some reason and i used this product and my face brush and washed for 30 seconds on each side and i could literally tell the difference in one use. My skin looked like it had shed a layer and i noticed that my acne wasn’t “hidden” under my skin it was on the surface now. The second day i used it didn’t see much of a change as this had already brought everything to the surface but my skin was hydrated and literally glowing!! Ik with more uses my skin will be clear asf!

Rather than avoiding Benzoyl Peroxide, when my skin is dry I prefer to use short contact therapy for 5-10 min and then rinsing off. For some of us, BHA’s just don’t do anything to help acne, sadly.
I also cannot use chemical sunscreens as they are actually huge contributors to my acne. If I moisturize well underneath, I actually find physical blocks with silicone in them to help seal in the moisture.
Crazy how different everybody’s skin is! YMMV indeed.

    • @laltlanchhungiralte778

It's crazy how similar our skin is! I cannot use chemical sunscreen at all I've tried all the hyped ones from Bioderma to Klairs every single one broke me out and I've been responding really well to silicon based products like The ordinary azaleic acid suspension and BHA breaks me out every time

Thank you for the recommendations. I'll see if you have uploaded the oily skin version, as that's my skin type. I hate mineral sunscreens though, I seem to be allergic to the stuff (often getting welts, rashes, itching, whiteheads, deep cysts, and other stuff from their use.) They also dont look great under makeup, or on deeper skin.

hi!! i have acne prone skin and i have dealt with acne on my cheeks (occasionally chin) for a couple of years. recently my skin pretty much cleared up and while i am VERY pleased, i still have acne scars that i do not know how to get rid of. i use a la Roche posay cleanser with my hands only, then the stone crop mist toner on some cotton swabs (not sure what it does, but i like the hydration and refreshing feeling), then i use a tretinoin cream (derma recommended), and finish with cetaphil moisturizer. i have really dry skin, but also can get very oily on my T zone, so not sure if that is combination skin or just dry. i think my routine has really worked for me except my moisturizer is not strong enough and i would like a more hydrating one. i hate fragrances btw and they make my face break out a lot so i tend to stay away from fragrance in my routine. i heard some good things about first aid beauty moisturizer, la Roche posay's, skinceuticals triple lipid restore, and cerave's moisturizer. keep in mind my skin is very acne-prone and I'm not sure which i should use or which to stay away from. also i want to change out my toner with the AHA/BHA exfoliant from paulas choice (not sure about the difference between AHA and BHA or which is better for my skin.) i also want to try the ordinary niacinamide serum and a CE ferulic vitamin E serum, but not sure where that should go in my routine or if i even should use it at all. also, i do not use face masks because they make me break out so if you have any gentle, fragrance free, and hydrating face masks i could use for extra hydration once a week that would be great! Thank you so much for the video. it was very very helpful!!

I went on accutane for 8 months and before that, my skin was as oily as a fryer. Now, my face is dry and I don’t breakout at all but I get the occasional bump because of my unhealthy diet and because I touch my face a lot so I really want to make a skin routine that works for my face now and is still gentle. This is very helpful. Thank you!

I have dry acne prone skin and I have to be careful to use Paula’s choice exfoliant only a few times a week. When I used it too often, the immediate moisturising feeling tricked me into thinking it wasn’t drying but four days of back to back use my skin would be SO dry

Hi Renee, amazing tips thanks! Have a question.. Have you tried Hadalabo cleansing foam? I thought you were holding it in the video. Also, I was expecting something with azelaic acid, I find it quite calming and soothing.. Do you use it only to treat scars? Can't wait for sunscreen video

I have dry, acne prone skin. The toleraine cleanser is my go-to for a couple years now, and I’ve had phenomenal results from the Paula’s choice Bha in conjunction with my tretinoin and cerave moisturizing cream. Great recommendations!

for those of you who can't afford the paula's choice bha exfoliant, the cerave SA cleanser is another great bha option that's gentle but also effective. i have dry, acne-prone skin and i've followed p much the same tips renee mentioned here-- simplifying your routine, layering hydration, etc., it's worked wonders for me, and i rarely if ever break out now. if i do, it's usually related to my diet more than anything else (look into anti-inflammatory diets as well, it makes a huge, huge difference)
    good luck everyone!

Really enjoyed this post - thank you so much!
I have bought Paula's choice hydrating cleanser and BHA exfoliator as per your recommendation. Within only 10 days i am seeing reduced spots and the inflammation just going from my face. I have also been using The Ordinary Zinc and Niacinamide serum and your recommended wishtrend polyphenols in propolis 15 ampoule, however, i am not sure which order to use everything in. Can you recommend if any of the products are not great to mix / use after one another? As an everyday moisturizer I use Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream.
Any advice would be super appreciated!

Great video! Finally someone who has the same skin condition as myself! Would you recommend an oil cleanser before a water based cleanser if you’re going to double cleanse? Or is the oil cleanser going to give me more pimples if my skin is dehydrated and acneprone at the same time?

Hi Reneé, I'm from South Africa and appreciate your channel so much! Unfortunately we are locationally challenged and it's not always easy to source products, although we do have some affordable stockists of Korean and Japanese skincare products (yay!)
I thought la Roche-Posay Toleriane Gentle Hydrating cleanser would be easy to source as an affordable cleanser, but all I've been able to find online or in stores is the La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser, which is frustrating since I've heard it recommended for dry acne prone skin more than once. Would you say the La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser is on the same level? Or rather, what is the difference?
Currently I'm using cetaphil gentle cleanser and am on a low dose of roaccutane.
Not sure you'll have time to respond to a youtube post, but just thought I'd try!

I can't click fast enough when another Gothamista video is released!
As you go about testing out products, I'd be interested in your thoughts on two very reasonable skin care lines: JJ Labs (on Etsy) and Cos de Baha. Thanks for taking my suggestion into consideration, Renee.

For giant under-the-skin pimples, I use the microneedle/dots from Rael. They are about $1 per patch on Amazon and come in a 9-pack. They are pricey but they really take care of deep zits. The microneedles are made up of actives that help get rid of the swelling, redness and overall inflammation. Even though my skin is finally clear, I keep a set of these just in case because they are miracle workers.

I've been following your videos for years and I finally got the banila Co. Clean zero in pink and the good morning by cosrx☺ they are everything and more of how you described it ! I've been using hada labo gyokujin moisturizing cream which is very very hydrating because my store was out of the lotion. I'm curious would you be interested in doing a review vid on Japanese products I know you mention a few but I'm discovering there are a lot of nice products and low and behold in my tiny city of Montreal we have a store that stocks only Japanese skincare! What luck.

Hi, I love your videos and thank you for making them, I feel like I have learned a lot from watching.
I have a question that I have searched the internet for a long time and never found an answer.
I have combination sensitive skin with rosacea tendency and prone to acne. I have used every moisturizer on the planet and about 95% of them make me feel like I'm "hot" or as if my skin was "covered" after I put it on drops of clear sweat like liquid appear all over my t zone. And it's uncomfortable. I am not sure what to do. Do you have some insight?
I try using lots of toners somewhat of a 3-4 skin method and I live in Montreal... Canadian Cold weather... So I need to moisturize :(
    Would you have some insight?
    Thank you

Question, what about the ordinary caffeine? I know it's not related to acne but I wanted to use it for the discoloration around my mouth, but that's one area I get my dry acne. Will it do more good than harm or vice versa? Loving the video, I need a cleanser so I will give la Roche a try, I've heard about it so much, it's time! My "hydrating cleanser" isn't as hydrating as I thought now that I am becoming a bit more educated.
