Good video. Do not agree with 11:13. it is wrong to say people can just clean their face with water...noONE can clean their face with only water, even someone who hasnt been out the entire day, here is why..the oil produced by the skin can trap dust, bacteria and other polutants that turn into free radicals elements that damage the skin cells. It is paramount to clean your skin properly and sofly to avoid any skin barrier damage. Besides that, good video. Cheers
How about those that live in humid countries like the pacific? It’s the summer season for us here and the humidity is beyond anything. I try to wear moisturizer but it just always gets wiped down from my sweat. Is there another alternative? Or am I just stuck with having to keep reapplying after each time.
@@Emz1738. I think you have to tell your skin type, what moisturizer you are using....Moisturizer are meant to keep moisture in your skin...if the air is humid, there is already moisture available. It is rather when the air is dry that you need to seal the moist inside
Another important thing to mention is that your skin is only going to be as healthy as you are. A perfect skincare routine can’t take the place of getting enough sleep, eating a decent diet and taking care of your mental health. You really need both.
@@HarshveerPoonia thats because mens products fucking suck... theyre cheaper and have cheaper ingredients because men care way less on average. if you want to pay less, then just go ahead and buy the men's products, and they'll probably be worse for your skin.
To sum it up, the four simple rules are: Rule 1 - Moisturize twice a day. - Find moisturizer that rehydrates skin, replaces natural fats and proteins, and keeps the skin barrier intact. Rule 2 - Use a sunscreen every day - Use sunscreen that's a broad spectrum. Rule 3 - Use a retinoid - Retinoids reduce wrinkles, reduce uneven pigmentation, and make our skin cells regenerate faster. Rule 4 - Use a cleanser - Cleanser helps remove excess oils.
dope summary, remember to add -For spf its better to get a normal spf and use it than to get a high spf and never use it -Retinoid generally safe but can cause redness so best to check with dr if you can be prescribed it
Using retinoid should be used with a caution, as it can cause bad side effect if used improperly e.g skin irritation, purging, skin burning... It also need to be used pea sized only, not too much... Must avoid eye area, otherwise it can cause serious dry eye... It also must be avoided for pregnant woman. So many precautions
To sum up the routine: In the Morning Step 1: CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser Step 2: Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen Face Fluid In the Evening Step 1: CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser Step 2: Dermatica Retinoid Step 3: CeraVe PM Daily Facial Moisturiser Also, follow the four daily rules to ensure your skincare is top-notch.
This was the first time I didn’t feel massively overwhelmed trying to learn about effective skincare and the actual science behind what we need. Thank you.

i’ve always felt ‘weird’ that I was using a ‘short’ skincare routine like this one but other people seemed to use 7 more steps in theirs.. happy to hear it’s okay to stick to these!
I don't have any skin care routine, it is meaningless. Just avoid the sun at peak hours and you're fine. Skin care is an invention by the beauty industry to sell a bunch of products to you that does nothing whatsoever.
I used to buy a lot of products, have awful acne and dry skin - now the only products I use are micellar cleansing gel, CeraVe moisturizer after which I put vaseline, and a sunscreen in the morning. My skin cleared up soooo much, looks and feels smooth, reflective and soft!!!
I've quite literally researched skin care for like 2 months to create the perfect and most minimal skin care for myself and you just summarized it all in 1 video. WHERE WERE YOU 2 MONTHS AGO?!? Edit: Vitamin C (in the form of L-ascorbic acid) is also a great addition to skin care especially in combination with a retinoid treatment. By combination I don't mean mixing the two, I mean using vitamin c in the morning and retinoid at night or vitamin c one day and retinoid the other
@Sniper consuming sodium ascorbate in Klenner doses titrated to bowel tolerance too will even out & brighten the skin. Can never go wrong with VitC be it topically, internally or as enema or snorting or eye drops etc.❤️
It's so confusing to try to find a good vitamin C that isn't super expensive. There's so much info on how vit C degrades then it's pretty much a pro-oxidant rather than anti oxidant. Trying to find out which brand actually has the most stable formula, while still being strong enough, oh and then whether it should also have vit E or ferulic acid...
@xTRXPx Oh then you're talking about cellular waves and Wi-Fi. Nothing can protect against that unfortunately. Blue light from screens also can make skin ageing, just think to turn on your blue light filter if your device has this feature.
@xTRXPx Man, your phone gets hot because the components of it are naturally getting hot while in use or when recharging. There are no radiations coming from tech devices like power plants emitting radioactivity...
Agreed! Here's what I've gathered about hair so far: • To prevent or stop any further hairloss for men: (1) Finasteride • To foster hair growth itself (incl. beard): (2) Minoxidil and (3) Microneedling • Reducing scalp tightness (botox) and increasing blood flow: (4) Scalp Botox (targetting the hairline and crown) and (5) Scalp Massages using pinching, pressing, and stretching techniques
all toothpastes except sensitive toothpastes are the same. So if you don't have sensitive teeth every toothpaste is effectively the same. Use mouthwash before brushing and never after because mouthwash washes out the effects of toothpaste. And finally the most important is don't rinse your mouth with water after brushing. let it remain for 10minutes for the effect of the chemicals to kick in
FYI about retinoids: they increase skin sensitivity to sun damage. So don't be tempted to wear it during the day, and absolutely make sure you wash the previous night's application from your face in the morning and, as Ali says, always wear sunscreen.
In one of her videos Dr. Dray actually talks about this and debunks it. Apperantly retinol does not increase photosensitivity, however some forms of retinoids degrade with light therefore the benefits of retinol may potentially reduce if you wear it during the day.
Bless you for putting out the evidence based facts only. No fluff. No product plugging. Just honest, simple, easy to implement steps. I love that they are backed by doctors and dermatologists that ACTUALLY know what they’re talking about (not some scummy influencers).🙏 Thank you.
I recently got into skin care. I noticed when I stopped eating high amounts of sugar, or any at all, my skin would be much clearer. Also drink lots of water, that helps a ton!
I have found this too. My cystic acne is connected to my hormones and sugar disrupts my insulin ( which is a hormone). Interesting lowering sugars also decreases glycation that can be part of the aging process of the skin. So I am on a low carb lifestyle and feel better. I wish I knew this when I was younger.
The expert is so right when he says we're paying for the fluff when we pay too much for products. Come through with the scientific skincare tips! Love the editing style and how informative and engaging this was, Ali! 🙂
I just want to say, I’ve battled with acne and bad skin my entire life, spending thousands on dermatologists and their expensive products. The routine and advice in this video has turned my skin around in 1 week. I’m using tretinoin 0.5% at night and if I see my skin start to flake then I don’t use it the following day. I’m using cerave am and pm moisturisers and and the hydrating cleanser. Big thanks to Ali and your friend in this video. My life is changed 🙏🏽💪
I suggest adding a hydrating toner to add more moisture if the flaking still persists after a long period of time of using tretinoin. Toner is like electrolytes, you don't need it on a regular basis but when you're dehydrated, it really helps gain the moisture back in at the rate that moisturizer can't do. I have acne-prone skin and the Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner has improved the dryness a lot since I started using tretinoin, and if I want, I'll use not just 1, but 2, 3 layers if I feel like my skin is still dry. Then I'll follow with my moisturizer!
Get your gut health in check and eliminate toxins and free radicals from pretty much everything we commercially consume inject and use and are exposed to. Your immune and lymphatic response manifests itself in skin conditions and chronic disorders and issues. Just throwing it out there if you find your product stops working, instead of working laterally trying to rationalize why instead you'll look at the lowest common denominators and root issues, the worst that could happen is better health. Cheers
Dude I have been using tretinoin for 6 years now, ever since my acne was at its peak, and now I barely have any scarring. Not only did it clear me up, but it faded my post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and my skin is also glowing because of consistent moisturizer. I never imagined it could get better, but it did, and because I stuck with it. Good luck on your skin journey!
@@Kata_Rin I never had any acne but now at age of 28 I have acne and I become anxious because function is there in 1 month , scars is there and 4 active pimples should I let it go naturally or use tretinoin ? Can u suggest or leave it as it is .......and depend on parlour makeup to hide scars ?
Cleansing your face regularly enhances its appearance. Use a good face cleanser and clean your face twice every day. I use only riiceberry face wash by litlextrra because it actually has the right pH balance and is very gentle. This prevents acne and provides my face a glowing and improved look throughout the day. Having fresh fruits assists maintain hydration and maintain your skin's health. Applying Vitamin c serum also improves complexion. Perform this consistently and notice the outcomes yourself.
I was in search of an budget face wash for my mom, who has dry skin. I had heard about this brand, Littleextra Rice Berry, from my friends, so I chose to order it. It comes with a good smell, and the face wash works well. It does the job, leaving a pleasant smooth skin texture following use, and she likes it.
I’m a 55 year old dude who has been using a moisturizer with sunscreen and retinol as part of my morning routine for a good 15 years. It’s an easy habit that yields amazing results, and I use so little product. I can’t recommend it enough.

Thanks for talking about skincare, most men think it's for women, but we have skin to care too and we all need it. 👍 Order: 1. Cleanser Any non-stripping/non-drying facewash 2. Treatment (serums/essences) Some good ones to look for are Vitamin A (Retinoids) - for acne and anti aging Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) - skin brightening and anti aging Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) - for oil control, to tighten pores, to control acne and skin brightening 3. Moisturizer Depending on your skin type. Gel moisturizer for oily/combination skin and thick creams moisturizers for dry skin 4. Sunscreen. SPF 50 sunscreen with PA+++ (atleast 3 plus) Weekly exfoliation should be done to remove dead skin cells and sun tan. Ditch physical exfoliation (one where you rub small particles on skin) it's bad. Go for chemical exfoliation options like: Salicylic Acid (BHA) - also good for acne. Glycolic/Lactic/Mandelic Acid (AHA)
@@tonyjames9929 No. Capsules may have some effect on face but it isn't recommended to take them for long time. Supplements also have side effects. Topical serums on the other hand aren't that harmful.
One thing to note about skincare is that the effects are often never immediate. Sometimes you won’t even notice the changes until several months later! Last year I had a terrible breakout which caused hyperpigmentation, pimples and milia. After doing much research, I’ve finally narrowed down the perfect skincare for my individual needs. Despite my diligence, I still didn’t see my hyperpigmentation fade until 4-6 months later. Consistency and diligence is key and you cannot skip a day or two just because you’re tired. If you keep at it, you will eventually end up seeing the results you’ve wanted.
Here to say my experience, I have acnee and started using a cerave clenser for acnee along with a biotrade lotion for acnee and cerave moisturizer and I can say that in like 2 months my face is 30% cleaned up and no more acnee keeps appearing, I still have some but little to none. This video really is all you need, and I have watched Alex Costa and TeachingMensFashion and a lot more, but this video says it best!
I’m SOOO here for this Ali Abdaal skincare routine! I recently went to a marriage talk recently and the speaker was talking about how women “crave masculinity” and said “because I mean c’mon ladies, let’s be real - how into a guy would you be and how would you feel if you went out and the guy starts talking to you about his skincare routine?” I just said “…I would be impressed!”
I would be impressed too! My boyfriend is super interested in skincare and I recently got him started on a gentle routine curated for his skin type by me. He is loving the difference so far - he says his skin is way softer and he is sold on doing skincare now. I can’t wait until I can get him an exfoliatior too.

Over the years, I've finally been able to fix my skin and this video basically sums up everything I've found to be true about skincare after doing tons of research and trial/error.
If you use a sunscreen, a cleanser is definitely not optional. Double cleansing is actually the way to go if you want to get the SPF off of your face as much as possible. Nice video though 👍🏻
@@Onodera05 Well actually a lot of people say that you need to use two different types of clensers when you are clensing your face. Double clense is the fancy term for that. I think the koreans bought that in. The idea is that when we are wearing sunscreen and make up blah blah etc etc there are so much of dirt, grim and oil in our skin. A normal clenser usually removes everything which is soluble in water but aparently there are also more dirt and stuff like oil which is soluble only in oil so you need something which can pick up these oil as well. So for that people tend to use micellar water or an oil based clensers. Thats it but when we are not wearing any make up and just some sunscreen i guess just clensing with a clenser is fine. Like try clensing with your clenser and then whipe your face with a white towel. If you still find dirt you probbaly need to use the double clense else you are fine. I am fine with clensing just one. I feel this is just some marketting trend. For light make up like lipstick, eye liner and mascara maybe some concealer i guess micellar water would do
I would say cleanser are not just optional. if you're using sunscreen (especially waterproof sunscreen), you really need cleansers to help clean out your pores and to avoid sunscreen from sticking to your face.
I personally have not had acne problems while wearing sunscreen daily and forgetting to use my cleanser for a week. It definitely depends on your skin. For me, it is optional, for others, it may be necessary.
I’ve been trying to convince my husband to give a try to skincare but it was almost impossible 😭 Today he sent me this video and I was sooo happy 💙 I loved the video and how well and simple all the concepts are explained. Thanks for including this kind of content in your channel 🙏🏼😍
Not to be a downer but honestly I feel it's unfortunate how common it is for men not to listen to women on things like this until another man says the same thing. My boyfriend have been the same way (though he hasn't seen this video). How is a women skin drastically different from a man's??? Like with Jordan Peterson having a mass following of men in their 20-30's. He tells them to 'clean your room' and they eat this stuff up but these men have mother's that no doubt have been saying the same since they were little boys. Point being, it's sad that words have more weight to a man when it comes from another man.
It's so annoying, when people are stubborn with things they haven't even tried. These same people complain to their Dr that their skin is peeling, and are surprised why they don't look half decent in photos. Rant over.
@@ericae.6547 I mean, the same can be said about women. Not saying you're wrong, but advice given to women by men are often ignored unless a prominent female influencer, artist etc says the same thing. People are just more likely to listen to people they identify with. A man identifies more with another man, so he'll be more inclined to take their advice. Same with women.
@@starmorpheus I haven’t really seen what you’re saying, though. If anything, I’ve seen women take advice from men before women. Not saying what you’re saying doesn’t happen, though.

@@suhaib221b4 I would recommend to go to a dermatologist. Considering your age the acne could be because of hormones and therefore you may not see improvement from skincare products because it's the hormones that cause it. A prescribed topical cream or medication may help. Hope this helps and remember that it will get better! I had severe acne and did 3 antibiotic cures and 1 accutane cure and my skin is much better now! But again I had severe acne.
@@suhaib221b4 hey probably a little late .but if your acne is something like red dots which bleeds ,its cystic so probably hormones or something else which needs to be internally fixed and skincare alone won't fix it . If its just white flaky little dots then probably try an antibiotic called azithromycin. I had suddenly developed such acne and skincare products made my skin more sensitive and irritated so be careful . Only antibiotics worked But acne differs for everyone so it's better to first know what kind of acne you have and go see w dermatologist.

Really great video that I sent to my daughters. I have been promising them to write up my skincare routine bc I am 64 and have wonderful, clear even-toned skin and people are often giving me compliments and my female friends of the same age have asked me what I do. But as you show so well in your videos, if you have not been protecting your skin from the sun since you were young, well the sun damage at 50 years of age is obvious. I moved to the Gold Coast, Australia when I was 20 and that’s when I saw what the sun did to your skin. The women all wanted a deep tan but they had crocodile skin when they were older! I have my crinkly eye wrinkles (my smile lines) when I laugh but that’s character. I can only agree: regular, continual skincare with these products (I also use Vitamin C serums) WORKS!

Moisturiser (The Ordinary - Natural Moisturising Factors) and sunscreen (still on the hunt for the right one, because they promote oils on my combination skin and the next thing is acne). Evening (Lactic acid and retinol alternate days) - Lactic acid in the evening, since it is an exfoliant. Can be combined with hyaluronic acid to lower the sensitivity. Not to be layered with retinol. Lactic acid works on the surface of your skin to remove dead skin cells. - Retinol 2 or 3 times a week, alternating days with lactic acid. Start with 0.2% or 0.5%. It works deeper in your skin to encourage the production of new skin cells. Retinol is best applied at night since it can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. at 60, I have the face skin of a 30 -40 yr old maybe with the exception of my upper eyelid skin starting to be very puffy in the mornings - which actually is probably from sinus issues. I have not had a lot of sun exposure in the past 20 years, as I am inside most of the time. I was literally accused of having a face lift (by someone who did not know me) because at 40 I looked probably 20. I believe it was largely a healthy diet and not getting a ton of sun exposure that allowed my skin to still appear youthful. The one time I decided to sit in the sun for any length of time in the past 20 years, I came back in to find DEEP wrinkles at the sides of my eyes! It was like they were etched in my skin from just ONE period of exposure! I immediately began using retinol regularly to try to reduce the damage, and sometimes a topical collagen, though I have no scientific evidence these are what has been healing the damage. Those lines are almost completely gone now, WAY less obvious, thank God. I do try to eat lots of veggies, fruits, whole grain, eat fish, beef, chicken regularly, nuts etc. I don't get a lot of sun exposure, though I do need the vitamin D, so I go out and sit in the sun for maybe 10-15 minutes at a time, but I wear a sunscreen when I do. There are areas of my back skin that I do believe were affected by excessive sun once in my youth, before I understood the kind of damage excessive exposure can cause. I don't "sunbathe" anymore, and have not done it for the past, probably 30 years. I did have one vacation where I was in the sun on the beach for a while prob 25 years ago or so, but we had sun umbrellas, so my exposure was way less than it could have been, and I of course used sun screen, having learned the hard way how bad your skin can get damaged by laying out in the sun all day.
The more I know about skincare (and it' s been a 30 years journey), the more I' ve simplified my routine. I don' t need 5 serums of AHA, BHA, PHA, a toner, an essence, a mist, a clay mask, fragrances,... When I' m using the golden standard!✨✨😌
@@sebumpostmortem i know i can get away with just cleanser, sunscreen and moisturizer. But i just can’t read about the benefits of retinol, exfoliation and vitamin C and niacinamide and ignore them all together.
For sunscreen I would recommend Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen. It sinks into the skin right away, doesn’t leave any heavy residue or white tint. It feels closer in texture to a serum than a sunscreen, and won’t clog pores or cause breakouts or dryness. PS: Ali please stop raising your eyebrows everytime you put on creams, it is counter productive 🤣
@@stryderhiryu8 the Biore one is great but for the summer I would recommend a waterproof one because of sweat and stuff. The one I use is the Kose sun cut waterproof SPF it comes in a gold bottle, it’s like 13 dollars on Amazon or something, it’s cheaper than the biore one too.
I will steer clear of Asian sunscreens unless you live in those regions. They also don't have a good track record with actually giving the claimed protection. Most of them are small companies that mostly design outer packaging and out source the actual sunscreen to some 3rd party.
@@timetraveler_0 why is that? I like them way more than western sunscreens and they tend to be cheaper too. I’m also kinda dark so the white cast left from traditional western sunscreens suck for me. Just do not use retinoid every evening. It irritates skin to use it everyday.I personally use it every three days and use contratubex in between. Also if you tend to have acne breaks when using masks make sure disinfect your face and your hand before using the mask. If you have acne breaks with your moisturiser use less oily and more absorbable one.
It's doesn't if you moisturize your skin. I have been using adapalene for 2 weeks now every evening and it did irritate my skin but only when I didn't use moisturizer in the morning. Now I use it every day and everything's ok.
@@Coyote-oh7gi Some skins are more sensitive than others and using a little less is always better than using more since you may desensitise your receptors if you use it too often. If your skin says it doesnt like it dont force it.
This routine must be amazing. Most men develop deep wrinkles on their forehead, but when you lift up your eyebrows there are no wrinkles at all. Your face looks so healthy and young.
Regarding the retinols part: I've been told by a dermatologist, that everything you mentioned about them is promising, but not guaranteed especially with my sensitive skin. So everyone should be a bit cautious about using them. To give you a bit more context... I've been battling severe acne for my whole life - so much so, that 12 years ago I was scared of my own reflection, I avoided people, I couldn't wear anything with light colors, because it would immediately show blood and I didn't want to smile, because of pain shooting all over my face from ever-present cysts. Now I am 28 years old and for the first time in my life my skin is quite clear without using any special treatments except a bit of moisturizer. It seems that with age some people really get better. The skin still doesn't look healthy per-se because of the deeper scars, but it is miles better. However, of course one of the things that really helped me all those years in the past was isotretinoin (mostly know as Accutane). Chemically it is close to retinols and it is not used topically. However, it still is basically a "nuke", that should be prescribed when nothing else seems to work - unfortunately it is prescribed way too often in the USA and Canada from what I've been told. There are many side effects when using isotretinoin which require you to go for regular blood tests, take hormonal birth-control in case of women (as children could be born with serious defects) and drink no alcohol. Now, my dermatologist told me, that the way topical retinols work is quite different, but the compounds are still really similar and everyone should be cautious, especially if they have history of skin problems. It might solve their problems, but it could apparently also make things much worse. So I just wanted people to be cautious about this part. I am still considering whether I should start applying small amount or not. Another problem is that retinols are not widely available in my country and I would have to order them from abroad.
Recently came across a sunscreen that suits my combination. The litttllextra rice berry sunscreen offers great protection minus the those breakouts. Definitely worth trying for anyone with similar skin issues. Make sure to apply again every two hours, particularly if you're outside. I also use vitamin C face serum from rice berry and I am seeing that my skin tone is improving day by day.
japanese and korean sunscreens offer high protection AND are comfortable to wear. you can easily follow the 2-3 finger rule without feeling like you’re wearing greasy clown paint
I really appreciate this video coming outside from the skincare/dermatology nerd RUclips bubble. A few mistakes or oversimplifications here and there but generally very informative and helpful for the general audience. I'd point out though that It's more accurate to say an SPF factor on the label is how much UV the product blocs or lets through. SPF 50 blocks 1/50 or 98% or UVB rays. SPF30 block 1/30 which is about 96.7. It seems marginal but studies showed it actually matters in the long run. SPF 30 lets through almost 2x the amount of UVB as an SPF 50. The factor is tested with a 2ml / square cm application. Approx. a ¼ of teaspoon that you can measure out. It is a lot of sunscreen but it won't feel heavy with a lightweight, gel or serum formula. I'd also argue that a cleanser even double cleanser is an essential part of any skincare routine at lest in the evening to remove daily oils, dirt, pollution that can contribute to oxidative stress in the long run if left on skin.
Iv genuinely been waiting for this video for so long, thank you Ali ! I appreciate the time and effort you have put into this video to ensure all the info in it is medically correct.
I have Perioral dermatitis. I will do none of that. I did my skin care so long and realized now that i dont have unclear skin. It is just so irritated and harmed from all the washing, that i look like i have terrible akne with little redness and highly irritated pimples and pus pimples and all that stuff that you would normally connect to lack of skincare. (I completely cut out 90 percent of sugar and fat from my meals, washed my face with cold water only, didnt touch my face at all, changed my pillow cases every week so i avoided any bad bacteria to stick to it and make it worse, like i was told and used a face wash and peeling morning and evening so i have a pretty clean and bacteria free routine) Still i have to make a NullTherapy now so my skin can heal and recover from that. Just a tip for all you out there that know this situation. Just stop. Cut out all the crap you are putting on your face. Let your face recover for 2 months. Dermatologists also will agree that it will be more helpful, than any skincare routine. I will try it now and write updates on how it goes weekly
Thank you for demystifying such a mystified topic. This is my exact skin care routine, and it has worked wonders over the years. A very nice, concise video!
Just putting it out there-subliminal affirmations for perfect skin and beauty on Borlest work wonders. If you’ve never tried it, now’s the time. You’ll be amazed at the difference!
Little sunscreen tips : look for a sunscreen with UVB and UVA written on it. ideally, the UVA will be in a cercle to clarify that you get good protection because those are the UVs causing aging and pigmentation and is not guaranteed in regular sunscreen/non dermatologist recommended. Also, to have a complete protection, reapply every 2 hours in sun exposure. So if you apply sunscreen at 10 am and leave your house to go to somewhere sunny (beach, park, walk, etc) at 11 am, you should reapply around 1 pm. Really hoping people sees this, they’re good tips
I used to waste money on products I didn't need and that actually made things worse, after cutting them out and doing this minimalist routine I realized there was nothing wrong with my skin after all. This might be all you really need, don't fall for marketing traps!
I love the format of SUMMARY FIRST then you detail it out. If I don't get the quick summary I just see the chapter names or move on to another video lol. Ali really respects our time. Love this format, and I always watch his videos fully anyways.
It's weird how I can watch someone like Samuel L Jackson say every swear word on the planet and I won't even flinch once, and then someone like Ali says "shit" once and I nearly fall off my seat in shock 😲
Cleansers are not optional 🙃 Also, Vitamin C serum in the morning before adding sunscreen, and a gentle nighttime exfoliant. Vitamin C boosts your skin to help guard against sun damage so it's beneficial to apply it in the morning under your sunscreen. If you don't use an exfoliant, then the retinoid and Vitamin C will just sit on top of your dead skin cells and not actually penetrate and do their best. Just be sure to get a really gentle exfoliant, DO NOT USE SCRUBS WITH BEADS (like St Ives...). These can do more damage to your skin. So: Morning: 1. Cleanser 2. Vitamin C 3. Moisturize 4. Sunscreen (Broad spectrum 30SPF-50SPF) Nighttime: 1. Cleanser 2. Gentle exfoliant 3. Retinoid (start slow, every other night, then move to nightly if your skin has no bad reactions) 4. Moisturize And don't forget patience and discipline. Skin cell turnover is slow so don't expect to see immediate results, but keep it up so you actually get results down the line!
One important caveat for retinoids! This is a great video and seems to be the perfect combination of products for Ali. However if you’re planning to give it a go, take an extra moment to research if retinoids are the best choice for you. Reasons you might want to avoid them or try something else: - if you’re under 24-27, your skin only starts “slowing down” or ageing at this age, so if you’re younger, it won’t be very helpful. - if you’ve got rosacea, sensitive skin, or “bad acne”. Although some retinoids can help these conditions, if you’re prone to having cracked skin or small wounds on your face, retinoids can really really make them worse. Talk to a professional and don’t get anything over the counter. - if you spend lots of time outdoors in direct sunlight, or taking medication that makes you more sensitive to sun light. Retinoids help with long term sun damage, but make you more sensitive to sun burns. Never use retinoids in the morning and make sure you use spf !! If any of these apply, a stable vitamin c serum could help you with the hyperpigmentation and skin renewal aspect.
Agreed. I lost eyebrow hairs due to tretinoin and they haven't fully grown back a year later :(. if you have sebbhoroic dermatitis, definitely reconsider retinoids.
Even though I'm a year late to the party, The Ordinary products are ones I will firmly stand by and recommend forever, all their stuff has simple packaging that lists the exact ingredients in each product on the front and not much else. I pretty much exclusively use The Ordinary now as they're the best skincare brand I've ever found
Ali, I love this video! I'm training to be an esthetician in the US (may possibly go to med school later) and I sent this to my school friends to help with their learning on SPF and retinoids! Thank you so much for spending your time researching and making this video!
Actually you really should be cleansing twice a day, especially if you are applying retinol at night. Leaving the product on and letting it build up will leave your skin barrier thinner and more prone to sunburn and in the long run skin cancer since your skin has thinned My dad is a dermatologist

I dont wear make up and started using moisturizer quite early and my skin looks quite young for its age.

"Use a sunscreen every single day" Haha maybe great elsewhere but here in Finland during wintertime we get only like 3 hours of sunshine and the UV-scale being close to 0 at all times. :D
For those who want a moisturizer and face serum that also gives a glow, go for littlllexttra riceberry. Personally, I’ve found it beneficial for everyday use. The feel of the moisturizer is lightweight and non-greasy, with black rice, vit C, and skin barrier supporting ceramides. The vit c face serum is similarly lightweight and non-sticky, and helped reduce spots on my face. I haven’t tried their sunscreen UV protection cream yet, but will try it in the near future. Picked this up for my sister, she's a fan too. Thank you!
The riceberry ceramides moisturizer with black rice water has been my holy grail. Also, I realized lately they have changed the formulation, and it’s even better now
I've been wanting to come across a video like this for a while now. I fully believe in caring for our bodies in a way that is evidence based. Otherwise, we are just shooting in the dark and wasting our time, effort and money. In the world in which we live, we are bombarded with so much crap information with so little value. I'd love for you to do more healthcare videos like this. Haircare is a big one. It is another industry where we are fed full with rubbish information. Yes, there are many different types of hair that come with different ethnicities. But I suspect there are some universal principles worth elaborating on. I'm aware though that this is less of a medical issue that a doctor like you would be familiar with.

I’ve been waiting for this since you mentioned it in ptya. Loved the depth of knowledge, the research, and the amount of effort you put into making it all so coherent.
Please watch out! Studying for my dermatology exam, I just came across the fact that retinoids are teratogenic (harmful) to a pregnant woman's unborn child! It's defenetily worth mentioning the fact that fertile women without contraception should be careful, and pregnant women should not use it!!
@m v Where did you get that info? I study dermatology and adalaplene, tretinion and accuatne are prescribed for treating hormonal acne, pcos along with oral medication.
You just omitted the most important, hydration and diet, which are the ground stones for general health and skin health as well. Once you got these pillars covered, you won't need many products.
Okay, mostly solid advice. 3 things to make it better: 1. Use sunscreen that has good UVA (especially long range) protection, that's what cause wrinkles and long term ageing. The SPF rating only informs about UVB (tanning and sunburn) protection not UVA. 2. Use oil based cleanser so it can get hydrophobic products that are meant to be water and sweat proof (eg sunscreen, makeup) off your skin. 3. Get Tretinoin if you can. Its precursors (Retinol, Retinaldehyde) are too slow.

@@Emz1738. I think you have to tell your skin type, what moisturizer you are using....Moisturizer are meant to keep moisture in your skin...if the air is humid, there is already moisture available. It is rather when the air is dry that you need to seal the moist inside

To sum it up, the four simple rules are:
Rule 1 - Moisturize twice a day.
- Find moisturizer that rehydrates skin, replaces natural fats and proteins, and keeps the skin barrier intact.
Rule 2 - Use a sunscreen every day
- Use sunscreen that's a broad spectrum.
Rule 3 - Use a retinoid
- Retinoids reduce wrinkles, reduce uneven pigmentation, and make our skin cells regenerate faster.
Rule 4 - Use a cleanser
- Cleanser helps remove excess oils.
dope summary, remember to add
-For spf its better to get a normal spf and use it than to get a high spf and never use it
-Retinoid generally safe but can cause redness so best to check with dr if you can be prescribed it
Using retinoid should be used with a caution, as it can cause bad side effect if used improperly e.g skin irritation, purging, skin burning... It also need to be used pea sized only, not too much... Must avoid eye area, otherwise it can cause serious dry eye... It also must be avoided for pregnant woman.

Edit: Vitamin C (in the form of L-ascorbic acid) is also a great addition to skin care especially in combination with a retinoid treatment. By combination I don't mean mixing the two, I mean using vitamin c in the morning and retinoid at night or vitamin c one day and retinoid the other

@Sniper vitamin c serum is meant to be applied on the face. It's a leave-on treatment, so neither is right lol.

I’m sure we’d all love more evidence-based personal care videos! Especially teeth and hair
Agreed! Here's what I've gathered about hair so far:
• To prevent or stop any further hairloss for men: (1) Finasteride
• To foster hair growth itself (incl. beard): (2) Minoxidil and (3) Microneedling
• Reducing scalp tightness (botox) and increasing blood flow: (4) Scalp Botox (targetting the hairline and crown) and (5) Scalp Massages using pinching, pressing, and stretching techniques
all toothpastes except sensitive toothpastes are the same.

Still, I agree, always wear sunscreen regardless of using retinoids.

Same! I dropped my old diet when I started eating a lot more sugar and my skin had a massive drop in breakouts! :D
Not only sugar! You need also to focus on fats like chips, crisps etc. Believe me, you will notice the difference 😉

@@mydearriley yes and its generally just not good to keep that on your face. Pretty sure a single cleanse is fine tho unless you're wearing makeup.
Could u explain in simple terms, i dont understand
For light make up like lipstick, eye liner and mascara maybe some concealer i guess micellar water would do
@@pavithras1146 thank you for the explanation, rlly appreciate it.
Do those seemingly mild cleansers work on sunscreen?
yes what on earth is he talking about. baffling.
i think it depends whether you have dry or oily skin

@@inesdasilva518 you’re not a downer. I had the same thought when I read her comment. Men can be soo wack. They end up missing out as a result though
I used besan as a facial cleanser, but it rather lead to rashes. As a result, later, I switched to littleextraa's riceberry face wash, and trust me, my skin has greatly benefitted from this and got better than it was before it was... pimple and spots diminished, scars and marks faded, pore size reduced a lot, and skin has become brighter and smoother, and I am getting compliments from friends these days.
use minimalist salicylic cleaner+ derma 5% niacinamide serum works great
Rice berry face wash and its vitamin c serum have helped my pigmentation disappearing after 2 months of use.

Only antibiotics worked
But acne differs for everyone so it's better to first know what kind of acne you have and go see w dermatologist.

If someone uses products from The Ordinary.
Morning
- Cleanser (CeraVe Hydrating). Toner (Sukin - Rosewater). Hyaluronic acid. Moisturiser (The Ordinary - Natural Moisturising Factors) and sunscreen (still on the hunt for the right one, because they promote oils on my combination skin and the next thing is acne).
Evening (Lactic acid and retinol alternate days)
- Lactic acid in the evening, since it is an exfoliant.
Can be combined with hyaluronic acid to lower sensitivity.

Your an absolute legend!
it's on 6 mill now lol
at 60, I have the face skin of a 30 -40 yr old maybe with the exception of my upper eyelid skin starting to be very puffy
in the mornings - which actually is probably from sinus issues. I have not had a lot of sun exposure in the past 20 years,
as I am inside most of the time.
I did have one vacation where I was in the sun on the beach for a while prob 25 years ago or so, but we had sun umbrellas, so my exposure was way less than it could have been, and I of course used sun screen, having learned the hard way how bad your skin can get damaged by laying out in the sun all day.
the more you know about skincare, the more you realize you need skincare products you never thought you ever wanted.
I think quite the opposite, you can really be just fine with just 3 products (cleanser, moisturiser, spf).
You don't need to exfoliate if you are using retinoids, it's already performance extreme exfoliation. Vit C benefits are only anecdotal.
Thanks. I will try this Biore'...

I was using lotus earlier, and it was ok types, but then, I used rice berry, and I can tell it really works.

(I completely cut out 90 percent of sugar and fat from my meals, washed my face with cold water only, didnt touch my face at all, changed my pillow cases every week so i avoided any bad bacteria to stick to it and make it worse, like i was told and used a face wash and peeling morning and evening so i have a pretty clean and bacteria free routine)
Still i have to make a NullTherapy now so my skin can heal and recover from that. Just a tip for all you out there that know this situation. Just stop. Cut out all the crap you are putting on your face. Let your face recover for 2 months. Dermatologists also will agree that it will be more helpful, than any skincare routine. I will try it now and write updates on how it goes weekly

Useless things..
Yeah, UVA ratings aren't standardized yet and can be tricky. The worst is UVA stars rating system.
In Uk and Europe, we don't have this problem with sunscreen. The European law is very strict with the sunscreen. I wish US had this as well

So:
Morning:
1. Cleanser
2. Vitamin C
3. Moisturize
4. Sunscreen (Broad spectrum 30SPF-50SPF)
Nighttime:
1. Cleanser
2. Gentle exfoliant
3. Retinoid (start slow, every other night, then move to nightly if your skin has no bad reactions)
4. Moisturize
And don't forget patience and discipline. Skin cell turnover is slow so don't expect to see immediate results, but keep it up so you actually get results down the line!
Love that you're on a skincare journey and glowing because of it!
One important caveat for retinoids! This is a great video and seems to be the perfect combination of products for Ali. However if you’re planning to give it a go, take an extra moment to research if retinoids are the best choice for you. Reasons you might want to avoid them or try something else:
- if you’re under 24-27, your skin only starts “slowing down” or ageing at this age, so if you’re younger, it won’t be very helpful.
Leaving the product on and letting it build up will leave your skin barrier thinner and more prone to sunburn and in the long run skin cancer since your skin has thinned

Okay, mostly solid advice. 3 things to make it better:
How do i know the UVA protection of the sunscreen
