- I was disappointed to find out the Gerber Strongarm knife I bought off Amazon during prime day was an absolute fake! In this video, I'll show you what to look out for so you don't get ripped off.

In July I bought one of the fakes for $52 after buying a real one for $82 from a reputable dealer. I got a bad feeling when I opened the small box with bubble wrap and poor quality info sheet. I wouldn’t have realized it was fake if I’d not recently bought the real one. I tried to put the review with comparison pictures on Amazon … nothing bad in my wording … but Amazon rejected my review saying it didn’t meet ‘community standards’.

Always return fakes. Maybe Amazon can be sued for selling frauds. Btw I stopped buying from them years ago.

I bought the fake on purpose knowing it was fake. Everything about it is spot on to the real one in appearance and I do mean spot on. I’ve batoned, beat it up, pried with the point, the complete hard usage knife stuff while keeping a decent edge. Why would I spend 3 times the money for a a knife of complete functionality. Knife snobs can gloat on how much they paid as I gloat on how much I didn’t.
I ordered a buck knife that I knew was fake just to see the difference. So far the four deer I cut up haven't noticed it. Was a fixed blade knife though

I got mine 2 days ago for $43 or so. Thought it was weird as it is being so cheap but when it came in the packaging looked awfully cheap and decided to look it up. Thank you for this video!
The telltale signs for me were the blade dimensioning that you mentioned and the typo on the box (it said PORTLAMB)

I’m not a advocate of buying Chinese products, but owning a couple cold steel knives, I have to admit that Chinese steel is comparable to 440 , if you are looking for a budget knife that will work , but there are many other choices

That's the one I got. It just came in the mail today. If it makes you feel better, mine is definitely real. It's indistinguishable from my other one which came directly from Gerber

I paid a bit for mine,but it was only cause they only made a limited run of there bdz-1 steel an a guy had one he wanted to sell an I wanted it,I'm not regretting my purchase but I do want a coyote tan one before price keeps going up ,I love how strong this little knife is,that's what got me back to loving Gerber knives was seeing what the strongarm could take an dish out

I bought a fake one off an add on Facebook. It was 35 bucks including shipping. The old saying, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. First sign of a fake was how poorly the sheath holds the knife. The fake one doesn’t hold it at all. The real one clicks in and holds the great. Thanks for the vid. Well done.

If it's a good quality knife 🔪 I don't care! Everything today is grossly overpriced. Apparently, Amazon is selling it at the original price when it was introduced. Same price as the Prodigy model I bought years ago. Definitely going to get Amazon product!
I bought one from Amazon (Gerber store) as well. The straps on the fake were light-weight vs. the real Strongarm. There were heavy grind marks on the blade that were not polished away. It looked like someone took a rough grinder to it and then coated it. The real Strongarm was properly polished and no grind marks on the blade. The fit and finish just wasn't there. I returned mine as well. Good video.

I got my Strongarm in 2017. It's authentic. But, a few details have changed since then. Very small ones. The "Gerber" on the scabbard is matte, no shine. The biggest difference? Price. I paid $51 for it then!
Man shit like this is the reason I only order gear straight from the manufacturer's website anymore. There's almost no such thing as a good deal anymore, so I just pay retail price to make sure I'm getting exactly what I expect.

I bought mine at Dicks Sporting Goods. Came in a clamshell package not a box. Have yet to buy a knife more than $30 off the internet and those usually used older knives

When the strongarm came out it was 65 bucks but it gonna up because of inflation I got all 3 colors of the lmf 2 for 100 bucks each today they go for for 120

I bought mine off Ebay and mine matches every detail of the fake one. What should I do? I heard Gerber wants the knives, are they trying to do anything? I agree this in no way is Gerbers fault though.
Glad you surfaced this issue. Any info on where the fake Gerber(s) are made (do the sellers info provide a clue)? Assume that Gerber is made in USA? Circa '71- '72 had a Gerber Mk-I with a nice leather sheath circa 71'-'72. Absolutely beautiful steel, nice balance. Took a beating in the boonies and came out functionally 'as new.' Shame they're selling fakes.
The real one is in the USA and the fakes are China. All the scammers off of eBay and Amazon get their fakes from the same Chinese counterfeit manufacture. I think my dad had the Mk-I. Great knives. Glad you liked the video. Cheers
@@tomwadek Thanks, I suspected that, but was sure you'd done the research on fakes. I typo'd my knife, it was the Mk-II aka Mk2, a Vietnam era knife, not a Mk-I.
Fiskars china factory is making the fakes
Bought a benchmade bugout a few months back and it turned out to be fake. Now every time I buy a knife I research how to tell if its fake or not. Got my strongarm in the mail today. Luckily its real as far as I can tell 😅

It's impossible to know for sure that you're not buying a fake on Amazon when every one of the listing use the exact same stock photos. Never showing the actual item you're buying.

I have an authentic one and my snaps were reverse of the one you showed as authentic. Could be a manufacturer inconsistency??? I am sure mine is legit...
The only serious Gerber knife I own is LMF Black I got it Looooong time ago, I am not planning to buy it I have enough but if I was buying Strongarm I would buy from Cabelas (I live in Canada 🇨🇦) none of that fake BS..One example,Buck 110 has been copied over and over,I have Real deal and fake and difference is obvious..If you can,buy in person, I do have knives from Amazon and they are OK…Thanks for the Video ❤…

Dude i just ordered me a fake one for 13 bucks. 😂 can't get wrong with it. they also made a newer version, now it's really good quality and it doesn't say "Portlamb" on the Blade anymore 😂

there's more than one fake strongarm from China, the newer versions are much better. i would say for that price it's a really good knife
Im sitting here looking at my real Strongarm and the fake I just got off Amazon...Damn. I also paid right at 40 bucks and the knockoff might be worth 40 bucks but I thought I was buying an original on sale. I didnt need it, I chose to buy it because of the "sale" ...Think I will send it back for a refund out of principal...
The fakes are terrible btw. My friend chip the blade cutting fire wood. All he was doing was shaving the wood and nothing more.
Is the seller blue stingray selling the fakes . It’s listed under the gerber store but the seller name is blue stingray . ? The black one is $50 , the tan is $70 ish . I guess if it s fake I can send it back . I ll know right away with a skinny box
Walmart is also selling a counterfeit Strongarm. They did give me a refund with no questions asked, however, so there's that.

I have a Strongarm that I bought when they came out, I shoved it in a drawer and only recently remembered I had it, so I took it out and started watching videos on them and decided to compare mine to see what details on my older, real one match up. For example, the serial number is 8 digits more like the one on your fake knife that has 7 but the font is correct, the “made in Portland” is in the correct location but the logo is lower on the other side in a similar spot as your fake one. Mine is sharp, the edge starts in the correct location and the snap is in the right location but the stitching isn’t an X pattern, it has the correct amount of overhang on the bottom at the back, also you can see that two snaps under the knife on the sheath are wrong on your fake, the real ones, both are bottom of the male side where the fakes have the underside of the male end on one and the top of the female end on the other. I don’t have the box anymore but back then I got several Gerbers, mostly from legit stores (some may have been from Amazon) and none of them came in a cardboard sleeve inside the box, some of them were plastic packaged (I believe this one was) for in store sales and the ones that came in a box were just loose in there. There are other details that make the fake obvious, you can see how sloppy the overmolding is on your fake, the real ones are clean. I think Gerber has made changes over the years, the fakers might even have some of this stuff correct from older iterations.

I recently ordered 11 Strongarms of different colors and edge types from Amazon. Only 2 were real Gerber, the rest are fakes. I also ordered 2 Strongarms and one LMF II from MidwayUSA. All are real Gerber. Midway sells Strongarm for $80 ($72 after 10% discount) and the LMF II was $100-110.

@@tomwadek I ordered about 2 knives at a time, each time from a different seller (including Amazon itself!). The first order came where one was real, and another was fake. This sparked my interest and after doing the research I confirmed which one was fake. I returned it for a refund. Then I ordered one which turned out to be real as well. So, the real ones were still out there. Maybe it was a fluke that I received one fake knife. So I placed 4 more orders (not at the same time) getting different colors and edge type (serrated and non-serrated) from 4 different vendors, including Amazon itself as a seller. Well, all 8 knives that came with the last 4 orders turned out to be FAKE, including the two that Amazon sold! I wrote review on Amazon warning people about the fake knives. I spoke with customer service several times informing them about the fake knives, including the ones sold by Amazon directly. I don't know if any of my feedback matters, probably not. But we should spread the words about these fake knives. I returned all the fakes because I just could not support counterfeit operations at the expense of a US-based company with their workers still making the real knives. If you want to get the real Gerber, take a look at MidwayUSA. I know I got 100% real Gerber with the 3 blades I just got from them. Their pricing is not bad either, especially if you catch them during sales and free shipping offer.

Nobody can prove Amazon is knowingly selling fake knives. What frequently happens is guys will order something, replace it with the fake, then send it back. Amazon warehouse employees dont know all that you know so they just put it back on the shelf and then the next guy gets a fake. Unless its something with a serial number AND they remember to track by serial number, no one will ever know for sure where it was swapped.
Not quite correct. Amazon has a lot of 3rd party sellers who knowingly sell fakes. It's very easy to be Amazon seller and Amazon is so big they can't control who sells genuine merchandise and who does not. The best way to avoid getting a fake is to stick with buying directly from Amazon and not their 3rd party sellers. People need to quit being stupid when they buy things on Amazon, ebay or where ever.

I bought a limited edition Strongarm from Blade HQ. It vost the same as the regular Strongarm. Mine is OD green with a non coated blade. The metal on the blade looks amazing. It kinda looks like a million little pieces of metal fused together and it kinda looks like it sparkles. I don't know what the finish is called.
I hate blades with coatings on them because it smears and rubs off and it makes the knife look bad in my opinion.
Mine is real by the way. People that don't know about Blade HQ and their limited edition knives of all brands called my knife fake saying Gerber didn't make OD green Strongarms with non coated blades
Oh and mine came in a long skinny brown box. Totally different packaging from any of the one's in the vid. Just a brown box that said Gerber with the logo. Came with instructions and a Blade HQ bumper sticker
Stop buying from Amazon and start buying from reputable vendors.

I notified amazon about a fake item I received a while back. Their response was to ban me from leaving reviews. No good deed goes unpunished.

@@sntmdsa3628 Nope. Said on the lines of" I believe ... and here is why ... ". Offered photo comparison ... It got pretty messed up in the end. Even to the point where the chat transcript was not available in my data dump with customer service. I was curious about that as well. Anyways water under the bridge. I make most of my purchases locally now or direct from sellers. Most price match Amazon Prime prices. Sure, I pay more in shipping but at least I'm treated like a person and not a money tree.
I'm sure the fakers cheaped out on the steel used for the knife also.

I wonder how many brands are fake when going through Amazon? I've bought quite a few "name brand" knives off of Amazon and I wonder if any of those are fakes. That's sad that everyone wants everything to be done online anymore and you never really know what you are getting but they sure take that money fast!
Watch your seller if it's questionable like knives don't buy unless it's directly from Amazon..Amazon doesn't sell fakes but 3rd party sellers definitely do just like eBay you need to do your homework on the sellers or most likely get ripped off..
@@jimyocum9556 thanks for the reply! I ordered a couple opinels and a crkt, I'm not sure if it was from Amazon or a third party. Gerber knives are not really that expensive so it's crazy to make fakes of those. I'll search my knives and see if there are fakes out there.

Lets be honest, Gerber is not exactly known for their quality. The fake one is probably on par with the real one.

But what is the functional difference between the two knives? Does the fake use the same street? Is the fake put together as well as the original? The things you point out are really petty differences which, in the real world, mean nothing.

You can buy 10 fake Gerber for the price of the genuine one... They are good gears: why should you pay 10 times more ? Same thing with the Green Thorn knives that are 15 times less expensive than the genuine russian ones... I own one, it's a great knife at the right price: 100$ instead of 1500$ !!!

Unfortunately, there are several. If you go down the list, any price that’s is suspicious, I suspect is fake. The seller I bought it from has already been removed but 5 “new sellers” have taken his place already.
