  • Gerber made this knife and silently slipped it into store shelves on a Friday evening some time in 2019, and still available today. It is a full reproduction of the classic 1st model Bear Grylls knife from the 2012s, only in full Gerber paint and aesthetic. What do you think of the non-orange ("BG" Logo) version of this amazing blade? Please let me know in the comments!

    I transferred the whistle to the ferro rod, because when you fielddress animals the whistle will get dirty with all sorts of bodily fluids and it's harder to clean. It's a great tool!

    I bought the bg model when I was young and naive, the edge didn't hold and the built-in sharpener was worthless. I gave it to a buddy a year later but kept the ferro rod, still have it, the most useful part of the knife. The pocket knife was better.

    Gerber eventually saved this knife. The Ultimate Pro is almost indestructable. Believe me, people tried. It had better steel, a full tang and other improvements. Sadly, by that time BG was no longer popular and they discontinued it about 8 years ago. It went from $81 to $148 on secondatry markets. I picked one up when it came out and I am glad I did.

      @@NotNuffKnives Ok, so we're back, and it was put to heavy use: chopping/batoning wood (pine, oak, maple), started a fire by the lake with the flint, dug a hole with it, and cut up fish. Overall, it was incredible. I read how so many fuss about it not being the Bear Grylls model, but this was pefect for heavy, north woods use. All my knives (Buck 692 Vanguard, Rapala filet knife) are all rubber-handled knives, so this is the perfect addition to my working knives.

  • @sarakajira
    @sarakajira 11 месяцев назад +2

    So, Gerber for whatever reason dropped the branding partnership with Bear Grylls. And when that happened, they changed the look of the knife. That's why it's different. What I do wish they would do, is bring back the Ultimate Pro knife. The Ultimate Pro (which I have one), was their extra-premium Bear Grylls knife, with a thicker blade, more premium steel, full tang, and a more burly sheath. It was also non-serrated only. But yeah this knife is a good knife, I have one of this model as well.

    Not against serations, but to much of that blade is serations. Would be nice if they offered it without them. Also I absolutely hate the design of that ferro rod storage. Moving through thick bush like I have here in MICHIGAN with that on my belt, could see loosing that ferro rod to a wait a minute vine or bush. Esse had the right idea, put all your essentials including a ferro rod in an altoids tin and the tin in a pouch mounted to the sheath. But to someone else that knife could be just the thing, the price is right for sure.

      They did two up grades to the BG knife one the same as the this with out serrations and the later one with a better shealth a pull through sharpener and a steel up grade, blacked out blade instead of the grey and no serrations either. From memory the first was called the ultimate survival knife and the later up grade the ultimate pro. If you can handle the bright orange the later version is good knife for the price around $40 i paid for one. Don't think it's made anymore but if gerber release that later version in the better colors and the price is right it's a good knife.

    That pommel is not for glass breaking. When they talk about using part of a knife for glass breaking, it is about specifically breaking car windows and other windows that are hard to break because of how they are designed, and the glass breaking portion of the knife has a point. Otherwise, you could use anything that's hard at all for 'glass breaking', so they wouldn't mention it as a feature of a knife. Otherwise, good review.

      full tang doesn't matter as long as the tang is 1/2 as long as the handle.
      what's more important is how wide and thick the tang is at the point it goes inside the handle.
      knives can be full tang but snap there because they're thin or narrow down
      tang length really doesn't mean much it's all about girth

    • @ArmsLovers
      @ArmsLovers 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, the tang goes all the way through the handle with the exception of the rear hummer. That hummer is not attached to the tang, it is attached to the plastic handle. With that said, I would not use this knife as hummer. Other than that the knife is very reliable. This knife, however, has one major problem - it is made of very cheap steel, it wont hold its sharpness for long. I would rather buy Gerber LMF II, Prodigy or Strongarm, they are made of much better steel. But make sure you buy original, made in the USA, not the cheap Chinese replica.
