This appears to be the original version of the Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival knife without the BG all over it and with a green colour scheme rather than orange. This knife had several issues which made it somewhat sub-par when compared to other knives. The issues were all corrected when Gerber introduced the Ultimate Pro version a little later. Although more expensive, the "Pro" version is a much better product. Unfortunately I do not think it is available anymore. A similar replacement product would be the Gerber Strongarm or Prodigy.

I was fortunate enough to get this for 17 bucks a nice Walmart employee printed me out a clearnece tag onnthe hush hush, with his handy tag machine nonetheless this knofe ks pretty awesome and of i wear the coreect belt i fits nicley sideways on my waist of vertically as well,i use a "smith" stone and it did have a small knick out if the package still razor sharp, and after useing thw stone and the few pull through sharpeners always the ceramic as metal on metal usually adds more damage than actually honing

I have had this knife for 3 years now. I actually picked it up for £30 in a local outdoors store cheap because it was a display item and they had lost the box and sheath. A darn good deal for £20 I tend to use it predominantly for batoning and processing wood, making tent pegs and fire starting with a ferrorod. I have not used it as a spear but I have used it lashed to a stick to cut down apples and berries on trees that are just out of reach. Given my poor fishing skills, I figure I’m best sticking to apples with it 😂. The pommel on the end of the knife handle has been used a few times to crack open a few things (but I might add carefully)

That's good to hear that it is still going strong. I love the ingenuity with the apple picker, that is so cool.😊

Anyway one way i test the blade and sharpness is on someone cottony or spongy and of course ill fold a receipt paper and worh just the wieght not pressing,it slices very nicley and i can shorten a cigarette filter with a clean smooth cut,so far this is excellent for 17 bucks also i add a coating of oil and keep it in the sheath it stays nice and shiny and rust free

I bought the bear Grylls version of this (also bought the parang, which I also still use). I abused the crap out of the knife and the sheath. The plastic clip that holds the knife in cracked and the counterweight in the handle snapped off after throwing. That being said, I do carry one on my rucksack for about six years now, and if it eventually breaks, I will buy another one.

Worthy of note that I wrapped the sheath with duct tape, which allows it to work as intended, and my hand is small enough that the counterweight snapping off the end left enough handle for me to hold for me to still use the knife. 10/10.

Wow that sounds like some long term abuse. Good to see you improvised and kept it going. Good to see the blade hasn't snapped in half like my old knife lol.

Just got one today. First time trying the ferro rod it popped right off the handle and went flying. So i super glued it. Not a good impression so far.

Oh no, that's disappointing. Sometimes it's easier to fix things yourself than all the hassle of returning. I bet its left a sour taste in your mouth.

how does this one compare to the strongarm? i know its not the same steel and it comes with a few perks for "survival" but im curious if its as resilient

TBH I have no experience with the Strongarm. I did read a few posts somewhere that there were a few people receiving their Strongarm not sharpened properly. The Strongarm looks okay to me and would consider, but for the dollars I like what I have. I am a bit rough with knives and tend to flog them.

At current conversion rates and 8.25% Texas sales taxes, Australians are paying the same amount of wealth for that knife as Texans.

THIS IS THE OLDER BEAR DESIGN (GEN 1) NOT A FAN OF THE UPSIDE DOWN FERO ROD THEY FIX THAT IN THE GEN 2 NOT SURE WHY THEY WENT BACKWARDS. Also the newer bear design used a sliding sharpener rather than a stone. this was disappointing from gerber.
