I've probably said this before, but it's genuinely so refreshing to hear someone who cares this much about Mario Party and is willing to treat every game as their own. I saw a Mario Party retrospective that totally dismissed the games as "basically all being the same, unlike Mario Kart" and it made me so mad because like!!! Literally every game has different rulesets and mechanics that make them stand out!!! Mario Party is my favorite Nintendo series because, imo, it is the only genre Nintendo hasn't been overthrown at. There's better platformers and adventure games and fighting games, but NOBODY does Mario Party better than Hudson Soft at their best. I really appreciate how much you put into really dissecting this series and what makes it tick. Now I don't have to do my own video, lol. But, seriously, thank you.
thank you!! i’m glad that you enjoy the mario party videos, as i’m sure you can tell i really love talking about this series and getting into the minutia of things like minigame set averages is so fun to me, hahah. well thanks so much for watching!!
Saying every mario party is the same is like saying that every Monopoly version is the same (which it absolutely isn't, some don't even include houses, like the Mario Kart Monopoly). Sure itr comes from the same "base idea" but that's the point, to make each game feel similar and easy to understand while having different mechanics each
The biggest thing i miss is the custom minigame pack from 4. Like you could literally pick all the minigames you like and exclude the ones you don't it was perfect.
ND CUBE BRING IT BACK
mp4 coming in at the end and sweeping is so funny 😭😭 I didn’t even realize 4 was absent till that point. Anyways banger vid as always, and glad to see the nd dev team back lmao. I thought they would lol. I can alr see you being like “wtf were they even thinking” when they said that the players turns often didn’t affect you. Can’t wait for 9’s set to place first now :) (it totally should)
Thank you for watching!! those are super astute observations hahah - i’m super excited to see what you think of the MP9 video this weekend!!
my toxic trait is that I'm Flip the Chimp's biggest defender 🙈
NOOOOO BIG GARF NOOOOO
@@marksrecroom I'm sorry, Mark. The funny monkey moves with my remote... I fear it's peak...
I went and put together my own rankings, and the results really shocked me. I did a simpler method where I add a point to a set for every minigame I really love and am eager to play, dock a point for every minigame I really dislike and don't want to play, and leave the score alone for every minigame I'm neutral about. Here's how it all stacked up.
34) MP5 (Goofy), MP7 (Weird), & MPDS (Simple): -3
33) MP1: -2
30) MP6 (Hard), MP7 (Easy), & MP8 (Simple): 0
27) MP5 (Action), MP6 (Hard) [No Mic], & MP7 (Weird) [No Mic]: 1
26) MP5 (Easy): 2
25) MP8 (All): 3
21) MP5 (Skill), MP7 (Hard), MP7 (Easy) [No Mic], & MPDS (All): 4
20) MP6 (Weird): 5
17) MP6 (Weird) [No Mic], MP7 (All), & MP7 (Action): 6
14) MP5 (All), MP7 (Hard) [No Mic], & MPDS (No Mic): 8
11) MP6 (Easy), MP7 (All) [No Mic], & MP7 (Action) [No Mic]: 10
9) MP3 (Easy) & MP6 (Easy) [No Mic]: 11
8) MP2: 12
7) MP4 (Easy): 13
6) MP4 (All): 16
4) MP3 (All) & MP6 (All): 17
2) MP6 (Action) & MP6 (All) [No Mic]: 18
1) MP6 (Action) [No Mic]: 19
I was really surprised at how well Mario Party 6 did here since I don't really think of that entry having amazing minigames. But in hindsight, it's such a solid consistent set of minigames all around with tons of gems like Granite Getaway, What Goes Up..., Catch You Letter, Cannonball Fun, Daft Rafts, Pokey Punch-Out, and Burnstile, and Control Shtick just to name a few. And the (Action) [No Mic] set is straight up the only pack in the entire series that doesn't have any minigames I don't want to play. It's that good. Man, I really did underrate Mario Party 6 as a whole. It's easily a contender for the series' best installment. It also pains me to put Mario Party 5 so low since so many of my all time favorite minigames come from here like Coney Island, Hotel Goomba, and Pushy Penguins. But the amount of stinkers here and the absurd amount of luck-based minigames drag the whole set down really hard. It's also a shame that Mario Party 4 has such a good minigame set that's stuck in a game with really mediocre board design, so I'm glad that most of the better minigames have been preserved in Superstars and Jamboree.
@@MatthewSmart thanks for watching!! your rankings are super interesting too - 6 isn’t necessarily an entry known for its minigames but i also think it has a consistency to it that makes its set perform well compared to the other games. i also think it’s interesting that 3 outperformed 4 in your set. i think this whole concept asks an interesting question about what makes a good minigame set - but i think we can both agree that the weird sets are not the way to do it LOL
@@marksrecroom Oh yeah, definitely. You really could go for one or the other when it comes to 3 and 4. But 3 edges it out for me for having a slightly higher count of minigames I adore, and far more of them to play at that, while only having one more minigame I dislike compared to 4's set. It also just helps that the boards in 3 are actually fun to play on, so there's that, too.
I want to say, thank you for giving a meduim between short mario party retrospectives and Idetefying Luck. You go into a lot of detail for each entry, yet not feeling like I have to plan out how much I have to watch of a certian video per day for a week.
Mario Party 4.
The BEST minigames, the UGLIEST boards.
Mario Party 4's boards aren't just ugly, but functionally terrible. Almost all of them have awful areas where you get railroaded against your will, like the opening of Midway Madness.
MP4 is like: "What if all the juctions were random?" Which makes the game's board design awful, and why it's my 2nd least favourite classic Mario Party (only above advance)
Brooooo!!!! I’m baffled that MPDS was ranked so low. I thought DS had possibly the best lineup of any MP in the series. Lots of minigames give so much nostalgia and a lot of them are fun. I can see how Nothing to Luge is an oddball, but Soap Surfers was so cool. And some of the 2v2s were really good. Hanger Management was great
Somewhere I do feel a little hurt that DS performed low in the minigame counts, but at the same time, I do understand why as someone who is the most nostalgic with DS. Again, watch your MP videos really got me to see that MP is the most fun when it's just, you know a Party game.
Minigames that can be good or bad, as long as you get friends to play with you and just have a good timesI think that's is by far this series strongest points. Idc if a minigames is too skilled or too luck, as long as it fun for you and anyone I think it's the most important, and if a minigame deviates the enjoyment, then that's wayyy worse.
Anyways, sorry for this long comment lol, Great video and I can't wait for your MP9 video since it's another game that I have found memories towards, and it's a guilty pleasure for me.
Also, I' not shock 4 performed the best lmap
thanks for watching!! yeah it crushes me to see DS so low as well, but i totally agree with your sentiment that at the end of the day, even the lowest ranked minigame set is gonna be fun with a group of good friends bc that’s what mario party does best. thanks for your comment and i look forward to seeing you there at the MP9 video in a few days!!
@@marksrecroom I will say to be fair, I did my own ranking before commenting angrily about your blasphemy, and was surprised when my own ranking would only rank 15 overall (5.49 score) for the normal set, I forgot about all the stinkers like boogie beam and dress for success.
@ I have a feeling you’re gonna like the minigames in 9 cause at least to me, I prefer the way NDCube handles it’s minigames more than Hudson, but I can’t wait to hear your thoughts
Solid mini games, great stages and my favorite item system, MP6 remains my favorite.
Amazing and rlly fun video to watch as always !!!! Glad i got to see it early :3
Also 20:16 "Like, look at this all-star lineup! Not you." *extremely loud incorrect buzzer*
@@planetsara4471meow thanks so much for watching!! super glad you enjoyed it!!
Mario Party Superstars is entirely remakes and has a number of sets to choose from, I’m curious how that game would stack up against the classics
pushy penguins isn't goofy.... it's serious 👿
pushy penguins is SERIOUS BUSINESS 🗣️💯

Penguin Books would be jealous.
4:47 the weird part bout the stick spinning minigames for mp1 is, out of the 4,
I can absolutely confirm Cast aways and Paddle battle are the 2 minigames where all people ever needed was the thumb method, palm was never required for those 2 at all.
paddle battle w/palm I believe legit could depend on cpu difficulty, and esp friends,
but thumb method was all that was needed for paddle battle+Cast aways.
now w/friends I can deff see why palm method caused the legal issues,
but man, when you realize you only need thumb for paddle battle,
as well as to just legit not play tug-o-war and pedal power when those 2 come up,
its just.. so strange.
plus when you compare Paddle battle+Cast aways with the other 2 Stick spinners,
unwinnable minigames in tug-o-war+Pedal Power, via thumb method,
you can literally "feel" how much more "strict" tug-o-war and pedal power are for the weirdest reasons.
you know tug-o-war is bad when even the easy cpus auto-win and even worse, you're forced to palm to win,
and the best way to play those 2 unwinnable stick spinner minigames is to not play them 💀
tug-o-war+Pedal Power are also notorious for literally makin MP1's minigame island completely impossible to win w/o palming
so while Paddle battle may be longer,
its at least winnable, and has never required palming at all, granted it most deff depends on friends'/prob cpu difficulty 🤔
Seeing all the weird minigame sets there are in these games makes me curious to know how many people have actually played with them on cause I’ve never seen a single group actually use them
I almost never comment, but I have to say I love your videos so much! It's obvious you put so much time and effort into making these, and the quality really shows! Keep it up and much love!
This actually gets me curious on something else: With this sort of format, what's the highest average type of Minigame? Y'know like 4-Player, 1v3, Duel, so on. I might actually mess around with your sheet to check that, so thanks.
Also definitely checking your retrospective series. There's plenty of MP retrospectives here, but ever since I found this one series about "forming the Perfect Mario Party", it sorta just turned me incredibly picky over these kind of things. But yours seems neat. Keep at it man, great content.
You earned yourself a sub sir. Geniunely the best mario party retrospective ive ever seen not just on youtube but the whole internet
Mario party means so much to me and seeing you tackle the series in these videos was nothing short of awe inspiring.
thank you so much!! i’m glad you enjoyed the video, there’s definitely more mario party content coming very, very soon!!
Mario Party is the poker of Nintendo games. Sure, there's luck involved, but skill and strategy does matter. That's why I love the Mario Party series.
Great video 👍
Honestly I'm so happy Mario Party 7, my childhood classic of the Mario Parties, ranked so high near the end! The mic minigames do weigh it down a bit, admittedly, but it definitely has some classics. I'm also impressed at the surprise sweep of 4. I was wondering where it went,
Great video, this was really fun! Personally, what I would really love would be the option to exclude specific categories of minigames based off the main mechanic. I have carpal tunnel, and while I can generally handle most controls, anything that requires mashing a button really bothers my nerve, even when I’m having good days. (It sucks, because before I had carpal tunnel, I was killer at them). Having the option to exclude them (or better yet, just Mario party 4’s option to exclude whatever minigames you want) would be nice. Even the easy categories, which you’d think might be the most accessible, still have them sometimes.
It's such a shame 4 has godawful boards.
0:00 Missed opportunity to put an image of Pandemonium from Pressure with the Robert Downey Jr scream meme in a corner
The guy who made that bg is probably a pretty cool guy wow.
AND THATS WHY HES MVP
Hi. First time viewer here. First of great, great video idea. As an aspiring engineer, this approach really intrigued me. Heh. Second, I have to say: watching this video, there were two moments that really stood out to me in very contrasting ways. =3
1) FINALLY! Someone else who thinks that Camera Shy from DS is an all time great minigame. That game actually presented paparazzi as a first-person shooter game. It's really fun AND it's hilarious.
2) Wait. Wait. Wait. WHAT!? Did you say at the end that Fruits of Doom from 4 is GOOD!? Huh!? I had no idea anyone in the fandom actually liked that minigame. I always figured it was borderline impossible for a human to play. Now, I'm REALLY curious to know what you enjoy about that game. lol
Now the question remains: which Mario Party has the best minigame side modes and why it's obviously Mario party 9
For some reason, he put it at #8, only adove 1 and Advance 💀💀💀💀💀💀
You can't be making this shit up
Those were mostly due to the 1v3's and bj minigames, not the free for all's. Mark was also shocked by this result, he said it himself in the MP9 retrospective.@@ToadisKing
Great video Mr. Haha! I tend to play Mario Party games with their complete set of mini games, but I may need to give specific sets a try.
@@ToBeKontinued thanks so much for watching!! i am the same way, most of the time - but this ranking has me interested in playing some games with different minigame sets!!
Mario Party content! I love this often overlooked series

Absolutely love the effort that was put into this (I agreed with many of your minigame marks!)

Thank you for putting some respect on 4's name
i expected this video to be like 100k views when i saw it in my recommended, but i just found a sneaky gem ???? WOOO!!!

yooo thank you so much!! i greatly appreciate the kind words - more content is going to be dropping very, very soon!!😊
WELCOME BACK MARK I MISSED YOUR MARIO PARTY VIDS SO BAD
THANK YOU!! mario party is BACK ON THE MENU!!
@@marksrecroomI CANT BELIEVE MP9 RETROSPECTIVE IS OUT ON FRIDAY MARK IVE BEEN WAITING 😫😫😫
i do think 4 is getting kinda overpraised i must admit. My wife and I are going through the Mario parties together and we've come to the conclusion that 4 is definitely the worst for us both, and the awful board gameplay isn't all of it; while there's some of the best minigames of all time in the selection, we were quite sour on the majority.
4 has a sneaky flaw in that it seems to lack any sort of mechanic to prevent repeats. Most Mario Party games tend to not have too many repeat minigames in an average 20-turn game, but when we were playing 4 we got Mario Speedwagons *four times* in a single 20 turner, an unprecedented amount of repetition in any other game (including 7 which is often criticized for its low minigame density per category leading to repeats). And given that one's an easy 1/10 for us both, that has done nothing to bolster our opinion on 4.
1 may be a worse game but there's at least a sense of ironic enjoyment to all its terrible decisions that can make it funny in a schadenfreude way, while 4 is just incredibly dull and repetitive.
Did you try Mario Party 4 Deluxe? It's mod (playable on real hardware and really easy to install) that seems to fix many of MP4 issues by adding a ton of new items and turning the mini-mushroom doors into normal key doors! (I didn't try it yet tho)
so hyped for mp9 video
Hey, I was Wondering If I can copy the spreadsheet and replace the ratings with my own personal scores that I would give to each minigame

What playing Mario Party Jamboree does to a mf

Thanks for watching!! ZoomZike's the GOAT, I'd 100% be down to collab with him sometime!
Probably 5 and 6. Part of why I rarely play 7 is the minigames are pretty boring. Like ground pounding on more goombas than the opponent is not that fun.
thanks for watching!! yeah that minigame is one of the minigames of all time
4. Next question!
What about mario party advance I was looking forward to you covering that
@@flamingsword2548 3:28 it’s mentioned in the video! i didn’t include it in the rankings since it’s single player and its minigames aren’t quite the same as the rest of the series, so it would be a bit of an unfair comparison
@marksrecroom sorry I must have missed that
no worries! i do have a full retrospective of the game on my channel if you want more mario party advance content :)
@@marksrecroom I think I will watch that :3
mario party 3 being so high was a surprised to me, when only around 9 were actually good
(one being awful tower)
Solved with math (and your opinions)
mario party 2
I’m honestly so surprised to see Mario Party 4 where it is. I get it has a reputation of having good ones, but I find so many of them to be far less memorable than other series’ entries. They may be “good,” but I guess as a kid I was always drawn towards a game like 6 or 7 that had higher highs and lower lows because those stood out to me way more. 4’s are all competent but outside of five or so, gun to my head, I couldn’t name that many games from 4.
