I can't agree more on how incredibly beginner friendly and diverse Wii Party is! When we were kids, my little sister always wanted to play video games with me, but it was difficult to find games that both us could enjoy. In Wii Party, she would often feel really frustrated because she couldn't be as good as me at the minigames, so we spent a lot of time playing House Party's game modes. She especially loved hiding the remotes and watching me look around for them, lol. As she got older and got better at the minigames, we started to play in more and more of the game modes, and there were so many to choose from that it never got boring. We got really obsessed with Balance Boat and mentioning it is an inside joke between the two of us to this day. I will always treasure all these fun memories of us as kids that exist thanks to this game, it was truly a huge part of my childhood!
I agree 1000% on everything in this video, except, zombie tag is a 10/10 in my eyes. I love being able to do something after losing and the sense of “if I go down I’m taking you with me” that it can breed is unmatchable
I’m happy you talked about the other modes in this game. People see the first two modes as “board game with mini games” and write the whole game off as a Mario Party clone when I’d argue the game’s best content is the smaller side modes like Spot the Sneak and the many personality based modes.
Actually, it’s advantageous in Hide-and-Peek to have one of the players of the team of 3 hide behind the rocking horses. The team of 3 has a 42% chance of winning if they each pick a random non-rocking horse spot (which boosts up to 50% if they can each coordinate hiding in a different spot, with 3 humans against 1 CPU), and a 56% chance of winning if one player hides behind the rocking horse and forces the team of 1 to burn a guess on it (and a 60% chance of winning if the remaining two players coordinate different hiding spots). CPUs never hide behind the rocking horse, even on the easiest difficulty, so you can always assign a single human player to hide behind the rocking horse. So, this game that is “way too easy” to the team of 1 is actually always in the team of 3’s favor.
Oh, Wii Party. This game, along with Mario Kart Wii, shaped my childhood. Growing up in not the most pleasant household and fractured family relationships, being able to play this game and forget about anything bad really helped. Being able to create friends and family as Mii's and put them in crazy situations such as becoming astronauts, swing from a gigantic rope, or falling into a volcano but knowing it's all for fun got me through some tough times as a kid. Is this game perfect? No, far from it. But, it is a game that I will cherish for the rest of my life and will always defend. Incredible video as always Mark! Looking forward to the next one!
It’s so funny to be that Wii Party had to go through so much to he considered part of the wii series, but Wii Play and Wii Chess got it without any such quality levels

And the way you portrayed them throughout the video made it seem like they were gradually fighting the obstacles as the length of the video went on. Wii party is just one of those games I have tons of nostalgic memories for, so seeing an hour long in depth review of the game like this is exactly something I needed.
I will always adore _Wii Party_ for its breadth of content and the fun simplicity of it all. *(Globe Trot* is especially my favorite of the main five modes.) It's one of _the_ quintessential party games, in my opinion, right up there with classic _Mario Party;_ everything that _Island Tour_ and _Mario Party 10_ wish they could be, really.
Wii Party is underrated, and while it doesn't quite reach the fun as MP, it's still a solid decent party game that families can enjoy on the Wii. Great review!. I can't wait for your MP9 retrospective as its a game that is overhated imo

I had this & MP9 recommended and I binged all your party videos; it's been a really fun series. I always like hearing people explain how they see the highs/lows of a given board, and virtually no one talks in depth about the bowser boards, and the extra modes and such. Like the idea of looking into the "beginner friendly" aspect as well. These last two in particular I like how you went over some extra development background that lead to the games being how they did; we were really lucky we had the iwata asks during this era.
This video was a beautiful reminder how I loved to play this game back in 2010 and 2011 and man, it shows! Thank you for giving a nostalgic trip to peak! 🎉
First off, the editing and visual design in this video is incredible. You really gave it your all and it looks great. But also, yeah great review! I definitely still prefer traditional Mario Party, but Wii Party tried something new that mostly worked. It's interesting seeing how this game influenced Nintendo Cube's Mario Party games going forward (Island Tour in particular feels like it's trying to copy this game's format). Have fun with Mario Party 9. I don't really care for it, but it'll be interesting to hear your perspective!
Bro, this is easily the best review of Wii Party I've seen and probably the best Retrospective you've done so far. Wii Party is such a great game as I really enjoy the Board Game Island and Globe Trot Boards as they're really fun. Not to mention, my favorite Minigame in Wii Party is Strategy Steps because you really have to pay attention to what number of steps you're picking but also make sure that you end up not getting the same number as another player. I just love the little details you put into this review as the interviews from development are amazing and I usually don't mention this but the thumbnail you put for this episode is amazing and beautifully drawn. Either way, Great Episode as always Mark. I'm really looking forward to the next Episode. I’m so happy to see a big in depth review of this game, because it always gripped me more than Mario Party and was in many ways the ultimate party game of this era, but it was a little overlooked because of its competitors. Also appreciate both the analytical parts of the strengths and weaknesses that I agree for the most part, my stance on the game hasn’t really changed much and this retrospective pretty much reinforced that.
i really really love wii party bc it feels like mario party with your personal mii’s in a wii sports / wii play style of minigames, and i still remember that hide and hunt minigame where you hid wii remotes in the room and the seeker had to find the remotes 😭 such a well designed minigame

Then, by some stroke of luck, I find a lone copy sitting with a bunch of other discounted Wii games at my local Source. From that day I have so many fond memories of playing this with my family and friends. This is one title that makes me miss the Wii console era.

dude this game will never get boring. Me and my fam always have a blast playing it even though the graphics are extremely outdated. Not only are the game modes really fun but god damn the soundtrack of this game is insane.
I played so much wii party when i was young because this game was so simple everyone could play it even my mom loves playing with us. When i tried the mario party game on the switch i was so overwhelmed with the board that it was just no fun. We wanted to play with the kids too, but it was just too complicated for them, and in the end, no one wanted to play anymore and just talked about other stuff
I think a lot of people forget about it, but balance boat holds a very special place in my part. I used to play it with my Mom all the time, so it holds a special place in my heart. The whole game does in general for similar reasons, but balance boat I think is the most underrated of the bunch.
My dad was CONSTANTLY asking us to start this up when we used to play Wii more often xD. My mom and cousins got in on it every now and again if a game in it caught their eye though

Swap Meet is *such* a good mode. Seemingly shallow, but lots of good strategy and luck opportunities. My cousins and I have had a tradition of playing it every Thanksgiving for over a decade (I’m 27 now and have been doing that since I was 14 lol).

It’s so weird seeing the differences between the American and European versions. Here spot the sneak was rule reversal, rope swing was lofty leap, etc. Anyway, this game was my childhood.
I sometimes get lost in the minigame listings 😅 maybe a short info when the game-type changes eg from 1v3 to 2v2? Shouldn't kill the flow if its just one sentence i think. But great video as always! Love it that you talk so thoroughly about these partygames ^^

really enjoyable video! i used to love this game as a kid but i rarely had my full group of friends over to play some of the house party games requiring 3 or 4 players, due to parents and schoolwork lol. maybe now im older i can give them a try

It’s so weird seeing the differences between the American and European versions. Here spot the sneak was rule reversal, rope swing was lofty leap, etc. Anyway, this game was my childhood.
Wii party is honestlye really underrated
Wii Party has so many games that require very little thinking and mostly doing, which benefits my skillset exactly. Love this game

I sometimes get lost in the minigame listings 😅 maybe a short info when the game-type changes eg from 1v3 to 2v2? Shouldn't kill the flow if its just one sentence i think.
