    There was a man in NYC in the ‘60’s, ‘70’s who was truly handicapped, no legs from his hips. I don’t know how he got that way, but he was a familiar site in midtown Manhattan for many, many years. He’d get around on a wooden board with roller skate wheels under it. He had a tin cup with pencils and beg for money. People were generous, he was funny, pleasant and entertaining. When he passed away, the New York Daily News, the paper, ran a story on him. Yeah, I'm a busker in the UK (and lived homeless for 7 years) and have played in over 100 towns/cities and I can say outright that more than half the beggars out there are fake.
    In this country most of them receive benefits but still beg off people who receive exactly the same benefits.
    Simple rule is offer food or drink instead of cash - most fakers will not accept anything except cash!
    If you really really want to help, offer to pay for a night in a b&b (motel) but insist you personally book it and pay for it (not just giving cash and hope they'll be honest).
    Many fakers will come up with very convincing stories which are either just untrue or are in fact stories stolen from genuine people with problems, if you really are undecided as to the legitimacy of the beggar, offer to call a homeless charity for them and judge by their reaction, but don't give cash unless you are convinced this person is going to use it wisely.

    Giving money to a fake beggar and realising that you've been deceived is a disgusting feeling. I remember coming across a foreign woman with her kid near an ATM. I was struggling back then and didn't have much on me but I gave them like 5€ I was struggling but I was not heartless.
    While coming back from an appointment I met them again in the street over the opposite sidewalk.. They were properly dressed, clean as fuck and they were shopping.. The kid was jumping on place and mocking me with a finger pointed at me in a language that I couldn't understand.

    You can normally tell when someone really is having a hard time. I very rarely will give money, though I will at least offer food. 1 young man took me up on that offer. I went inside the store I had just come out of, bought him a sandwich, chips and a drink. Another time I was walking around downtown Seattle and a man asked me if I had money for food. I said, no, but I have a sealed package of hummus of pretzels he was welcome to. He declined. Another time I was waiting for my grayhound bus to leave, man asked me for money. I had no money and said he could have one of my sandwiches. He asked me what kind it was. I said it's the food kind. Again, food was declined. People like this are either dishonest or dishonest.... or dishonest.

      @loksoraldarkwatcher9598 3 года назад +44

      Having worked in a homeless shelter, yes, sometimes this is true. However, just because they decline your food doesn't mean they aren't hungry or won't spend the money on food. Often times, people mistake homeless people for being desperate for anything, which they often aren't. That guy maybe didn't want the sandwhich, or didn't trust you. Just because they're homeless and hungry doesn't mean they're going to eat everything offered. People fuck with homeless people all the time, our neighborhood had a group of kids that liked to give homeless people food with laxatives in it because they thought it was funny. A lot of the time they do spend this money on food, just food that they want to eat. Just because someone is poor and homeless doesn't mean that they don't deserve to eat the things they enjoy, within reason.
      There's a myth that people who are hungry will eat anything. They will not, some people will literally starve to death before eating certain foods. It might be because it makes them sick or they loathe it so much they'd prefer death. Studies have shown time and time again that starving people will not eat literally anything. A guy could be starving to death and have a choice between a tuna fish sandwhich and a pine cone, and he might just eat the pine cone first because he hates the tuna fish for whatever reason. Some folks are just not capable of eating whatever comes their way.

She didn't thank us just asked for money again as she accepted the food. :\
    Another time, when I was super young (16) and in Philly with another friend during the day, a woman walks up to me outside the Reading Terminal Market and said "You're buying my lunch today" I thought "Oh okay sure" but I only had $20 left on me. Imagine this: In 90s and early 2000s in Poland people from the East and South-East kidnapped children (1-2 years of age) from poor families. Then they drugged or intoxicated them with alcohol to start begging in different parts of the city, pretending to be single moms etc. If a child died due to freezing or intoxication, it was disposed in a dumpster... Children that couldn't be of use (as they grew older) were sold for organs or to abusers.
    If you approached these beggars and confronted them, you were almost immediately surrounded by 5-8 bandits who could either kill or beat you up. They were all part of the same begging gang, making anywhere from 2 to 10 thousand dollars per month per beggar. Minimum wage in Poland in 2000s was 200 dollars per month... Many journalists died trying to uncover this horrendous activities and many families lost their children because of those bandits.
    Never give money to anyone unless you are a 100% sure that person really needs it, because you might be financing child abusers or murderers.

    I've had to deal with a begging scammer where I live. Always asking folks for change, then trying to ask others to give him bills in exchange for the coinage. He once tried asking me to go back into a grocery store to use the ATM to get him a $20. That's when I learned he's been banned from dozens of stores, local malls, banks, etc.. for this constant stunt. He also lives with his mother, who he's been seen walking around with, so we know he's at least got welfare support. He's even tried starting off with the whole sob story too. I never once bought into that garbage. As soon as someone starts up with a lines like "Please listen to my story first," that's a red flag for me. I don't bother carrying bills around with me if I can help it.
    Best way to deal with a beggar/homeless person is to offer to buy them some food and see how they respond. The scammers are more likely to get dejected because they want to spend that money on something else.
