the first animation , franklin coming out of the dispensary, is legit one of the best feeling, and smoothest animations in the game. it’s one of those where you don’t immediately take off running. you just walk along the beach and continue the smooth feeling. genuinely one of the best switches
another thing i’ll say is just in general you are one of the most important parts of what made gta v feel so unique. the switches were one of the coolest things. to just hop in and have the unique animation was so cool. felt like they were really alive. i remember being 13 and just watching switch compilations to see crazy stuff. big thanks from a big gta fan for ur work fr

This is the reason i have so much passion for animated movies. Its so much work for like 2 or 3 frames of the movie, but make all the difference. The same to well crafted games!
I think an interesting topic to cover here is how much freedom you were given in your work. Were the guidelines flexible or not? GTA animations have always been exceptional and unique. GTA 5 is no exception here too. I'm trying to understand whether this is i result of strict guidelines set by Rockstar or the result of a full scale creativity which was allowed during the game creation process.
Most of the time at most big studios they already know what shots are gonna be animated and what motions to choose from the motion capture days ect the smaller the company and team the more creative freedom you have. On GTAV for example I didn’t have much say in what the character did or said ect or how they acted. It was already planned and done and I was to animate what they needed
@@YorkReactsWhat about camera movement - did you animate it as well or it was made afterwards by other people? Or maybe it was captured in studio before you even started your part?
This is actually mind blowing to me. When I first saw the gameplay trailer back when, I wasn’t actually sure what to think. I was probably overwhelmed or something. Then I saw that exact animation of Franklin walking from the shop and I immediately became obsessed. That was the moment I fell in love with the game, kinda. So with the knowledge that you were the one who created that… idk man, it blows me away! The smoothness. I had never, ever seen that kind of detail being put in a game before. Thank you! Really. That moment made me fall in love with the kind of work you guys did on the game.
That's really cool, man. I just wanna say thanks for making the realism in the world of GTA 5. I really enjoyed my time over the years with this game. Sorry for this long book. But back in 2012, I was a Herione addict. I lost my sister to cancer in 2012, and I went downhill. On June 3rd, 2013, she would've turned 21 years old and never got to enter the world as an adult. But on her birthday I decided to get clean. I'm coming up on 11 years clean. But to make a long story short. I never played video games growing up, and I was 28 yrs old in 2013, and I did 3 years in an intensive outpatient program. One thing I learned to keep yourself clean was to have a hobby. So I got myself back to holding a job, and I needed something to keep me off the streets. So I went out and bought my very first game console, and it was a PS4. My very first game was Grand Theft Auto 5, and let me tell you, Mike, that game kept me clean all these years. I allowed me to escape reality no matter how bad days got for me. I could keep writing all the good things to say about my sobriety, but I'm gonna cut it right here and just say to you. Thank you 💯 for being part of Rockstar and bringing something truly wonderful in my life. I'm alive today because of that game and because of you bro. Might sound silly to those who don't understand. But it was the best hobby in my situation at the time. Now I'm on my 2 feet with my own place and driving a 2022 Dodge Challenger 392 R/T Scat Pack fully loaded, and my 17 year old daughter is back in my life. I have come a long way. So thank you, Mike!

Thank you for going into detail. Believe it or not but i actually thought the character done the action with motion capture lol. Wow you're talented and obviously have a lot of patience.
Like most people I just discovered your videos recently. Something funny is I’ve been playing GTA V story again recently and something that caught my eye was Trevor trying to flush the foot down the toilet, I took a minute and kinda laughed at that little detail, then I find out you were the one who animated it!😂
Dude I love your incredible insights! I’m about to finish my first game development class this week. I’ve been in school for 3d animation since 2020. There’s not many channels like yours. You mentioned boring animations that you left out but you should totally make a video in the future called “the boring animations I made” because there’s still work that goes behind that. Can’t wait for more!
Thank you for sharing with us your amazing work ❤ One other thing that makes me realize is that you guys were working using windows 7 back in the days lol. When I stop to think about those things, it makes me feel really nostalgic... Xbox 360, Windows XP, Windows 7, Orkut etc 😂
This video just shows why rockstsr games are extremelydetailed and polished, almost every single aspect of the game goes through more than 1 person it seems. Lot of game companies seem to lack in not skill, but delegation of skills and the amount of eyes seeing over everything.
i love all of this, i dont remember if rockstar was quiet like this as a kid but i feel like they are so secretive now days and we all just wanna hear how stuff is made / insights, literally the willy wonkas chocolate factory for games
Really amazing work. That mini game one with the drill, I remember doing it and feelin like I'm actually doing it. Felt so real, even the mistakes and success of it was on me.. it was done so well and it was a learning curve to figure out as it would be in real life so I appreciated that part and was impressed. Thank you for the work on that. All your work on it and everyone in Rockstar. Its a privilege & pleasure to play it to this day
Thank you so much that’s awesome love to hear comments like this. It means the animation goes in noticed and works well ect. Also cool to hear there was a learning curve hah props to the designers on that one
I love watching these, I been recently modding RDR2 and i have been messing around with the animations combining them and also attaching objects and PTFX to them. So hearing stories of people that actually made them is inspiring!
I didn’t know about the rag until you mentioned it, very conveniently I’ve been playing the story again (since 6 trailer came out) and after I heard you mention it, I got on (it played Franklin’s dispo. scene) I switched to Trevor & he was right outside pretty much walking right up to it lol Thank you for your hard work & explanations of your works, love these videos!
I would have thought that you were going to show a bunch of obscure animations that I never caught before, but *no!* You actually made some of the most iconic animations in the entire game. The amount of times I’ve seen those Franklin character switches was insane! Trevor stomping the foot into the toilet has always stood out to me since the very first time it was shown in a trailer. Excellent work and thank you so much for sharing!!
I always wondered how a game so big can be kept under wraps so secretly! Can you make a video on What’s Rockstars protocols for keeping its games hidden until release. That’s always been interesting to me, with thousands of devs working on such a big game & what do they do to devs that they suspect of leaking info etc ?
Thank you this is super interesting! But what I don't understand is you talk alot about animating but what parts are mocap and what is completely animated by hand? Is the mocap recording easelly usable or has it to be cleaned up and stitched together? Can animators quickly moceap themselves to get a performance they need? Your a joy to listen to, keep it up please!
This channel is so cool dude, id love to see a tutorial on how i could start learning this stuff, always been a fan of animation, just never really understood how i start
This is an amazing insight. No wonder game development takes aloooot of time too. How a few seconds can be stretched to even months. Thanks york! Enjoyable video nonetheless

You mentioned boring animations that you left out but you should totally make a video in the future called “the boring animations I made” because there’s still work that goes behind that. Can’t wait for more!
Love these videos. Keep making these really enjoyable seeing the work that goes into these games
Dude been loving this channel! Keep up the great work!
Wow some of these scenes are so iconic! That’s so cool man, you must be proud to have worked on one of the biggest games of all time!
Thank you for sharing with us your amazing work ❤
One other thing that makes me realize is that you guys were working using windows 7 back in the days lol. When I stop to think about those things, it makes me feel really nostalgic... Xbox 360, Windows XP, Windows 7, Orkut etc 😂
Legendary work Mike!
GTA V is a masterpiece.
Loving the new content. that shirt bangs my mom so hard
This video just shows why rockstsr games are extremelydetailed and polished, almost every single aspect of the game goes through more than 1 person it seems. Lot of game companies seem to lack in not skill, but delegation of skills and the amount of eyes seeing over everything.
Want to say Thankyou for all your hard work!
i love all of this, i dont remember if rockstar was quiet like this as a kid but i feel like they are so secretive now days and we all just wanna hear how stuff is made / insights, literally the willy wonkas chocolate factory for games
“This videos going to be pretty long” …… was preparing for a 45 min York video (which I would watch)
Very very cool. Thanks for sharing!
So generous and humble. You are a good animator, but I´m sure you are an even better person. Thank you.
This is so cool bro. As a new subscriber, can you maybe break it down a lot deeper with examples etc ? I always wondered how GTA was made! 💯💪🏾
Interesting to me that you got to do multiple varying parts of animation in the game
I love watching these, I been recently modding RDR2 and i have been messing around with the animations combining them and also attaching objects and PTFX to them. So hearing stories of people that actually made them is inspiring!
love the long detailed vids ! , cool idea would be to run us through the
program/s you use more more in depth look
Consumers love the story behind the game production. Keep up putting out these sorts of contents. Amazing.
all your animation especially the first one is my fav in the whole game
That was really cool thanks man
Millions of people around the world have seen your work 1000's of times. Everyone who worked on the game is a legend
I didn’t know about the rag until you mentioned it, very conveniently I’ve been playing the story again (since 6 trailer came out) and after I heard you mention it, I got on (it played Franklin’s dispo. scene) I switched to Trevor & he was right outside pretty much walking right up to it lol
Thank you for your hard work & explanations of your works, love these videos!
Awesome hahah glad you took the trip LOL 😂
You did a good job man :)
Yeah I want to make some more videos explains this process more. Keep you posted
I love the shirt choice after last video! 😂
This channel is so cool dude, id love to see a tutorial on how i could start learning this stuff, always been a fan of animation, just never really understood how i start
Planning on making courses maybe 🤔 would you be interested in that ?
@@YorkReacts that would be hella cool dude💪
This was really cool. You must be proud to be a part of such a great product! 👍 I'll be subscribing.
I DEMAND PART 2 NOW!!! THIS IS SO GOOD
Haha so demanding geeesh hahaha 😝 love it. Part 2 with RDR2 ?
@@YorkReacts Yeeeeees!!!
@@YorkReactsYes please I really enjoy your videos lifts my mood hahaha😅
Hey thanks for the insight it’s always refreshing seeing these kind of videos hope to see more in the future York merry Xmas 🎄
When I found your channel you had less than 5k subs. Now you are almost at 40k! Grats!
Nice been waiting for a new vid👍
This is an amazing insight. No wonder game development takes aloooot of time too. How a few seconds can be stretched to even months. Thanks york! Enjoyable video nonetheless
Great videos bro, respect from Glasgow Scotland, have a great Christmas 🎄
