@@lightweightabsorbent2008 you're not that important my guy. Anyone can learn how to make 3D sculptures and write code. I learned in less than 3 months without any school.
While I agree that a lot goes into making a PC Port, we are also dealing with a multi-billion dollar franchise that should have thought about this during the planning stages. I will be the first to admit that I have no idea how the sausage is made, or how these finances are allocated/distributed, but with that kind of money, they can afford to do anything they want a few times over. My opinion(possibly wrong but still), is that it is a marketing strategy to keep a continuous flow of income once the other markets "dry" out, which is a smart move as a business.
The biggest thing that Rockstar is able to keep money flowing this time around, that they could not do before GTA5 released is GTA Online. Because of the microtransactions from this, they can EASLY delay GTA VI if they wanted to until 2026 or 2027, back then this didn't really exist at that time so it was harder to have the resources to do probably all three at the same time. GTA IV had an online mode but it didn't have microtransactions like GTA Online did, so Rockstar could only get their money from the DLC sales or the base game, which is not as much money as the microtransaction sales they are making now. So they can easily do a PC at launch as the console versions if they wanted to, but they continue this tradition for releasing there games, which they do not have to now. Its old and outdated way of releasing ports of games.
Maybe bc gta6 is the Burj Khalifa of videogames. They're focusing resources on the most prevalent global-spec platform, which currently is the ps5. Trying to avoid what happened to CPunk2077 or Starfield. If gta6 were a small project like Lies of P, they'd have optimized the pc version at the same time.
100% agree,. it's just a bs excuse This is simply meant against piracy,. They have plenty of money to get this done, Even other companies and other game developers can easily do this, So the bottom line is that Rockstar alone can't do this, And that's why I think this is just a lie and just a lame excuse
@@DarkLordNazothis, all to do with money. Can you imagine joining online day one and pc players already cheated in millions of dollars owning everything? Literally the reason why theyre doing it... monetization and piracy.
Bro it’s soooooooooooooo hard. It’s like saying Apple should have windows fully working on your iPhone when it came out. Yea no worries I’ll just compile that now… hire 50 monkeys with typewriters this instant. This isn’t deliberate bro. It’s fucking difficult
One the best series so far on this 6 journey , I’m still thinking about the last video when you said rockstar knows exactly how awesome the game is because they’re playing it 😂😂
Haha yeah I remember working on GTAV that’s all I kept thinking to myself. Ohhhh man the people have no idea how incredible this game is going to be. Because you only see a tiny ice shaving of the tip of the iceberg when we see a trailer compared to what’s actually in the game. Can’t wait!!
@matt5539This is one of the worst takes I've ever seen lol. The point of video game development is to always be pushing the limits of available hardware, which is continually progressing. If everyone had your mentality we'd still be playing Pong on Ataris.
I always wondered how a game so big can be kept under wraps so secretly! Can you make a video on What’s Rockstars protocols for keeping its games hidden until release. That’s always been interesting to me, with thousands of devs working on such a big game & what do they do to devs that they suspect of leaking info etc ?
I'd assume a lot of it is fear of breaking NDA and being sued into bankruptcy plus risking a well paying job that is only a dream for a lot of people. That and I assume they go the marvel route and have most people not know any more then they work on. Much easier to keep people's mouth shut if they know very little to nothing about that bigger picture besides upper management and lead devs and designers
While I totally appreciate what you’re saying, Rockstar are one of the only AAA game developers that delay PC releases on their games. You mentioned budget restrictions, I really can’t see that being an issue given the insane sales/revenue each of their games generate
Ohh yea your right I said money in there at the end LOL 😂 I’m not referring to rockstar not having the money. Most companies don’t have the extra money per say to dump that into a fast turn around pc port or to work on them all simultaneously. It just doesn’t make financial sense probably for most companies. Also most companies don’t want to bring in a bunch of people just for a certain task and then let them all go once the pc port is done ect. They try to keep their people for the most part and keep everyone working throughout the whole development process if possible.
And it shows, because there hasnt been a single good pc port in the last 3 years on launch day. So realeasing a multi platform game on all platforms is good for sells like cod but the performance is shit. Like cod🙃
Literally. I get that he used to work there and he probably doesn't want to make them look bad or whatever but I mean come on. Rockstar has made over 7 billion dollars from sales and microtransactions for GTA Online. And they dont have the time or money to make the PC release happen? Please LMAO.
@@ajuiceboxxx I mean, it would take longer if they did all 3 at the same time. That would be more resources and more money - which they don't need to do. Console version first and then everyone hops on PC after to polish it up
I want to know more about how a game so large and complex is managed and directed. I understand a lot of the roles and how it usually works, but when there are hundreds of people working on the same game it’s always magic to me that it can result in a cohesive, not glitchy broken disaster.
Well management is THE thing that makes or breaks the game, you can have most talented people but if you won't let them use that talent to their best advantage - it won't matter. That's why you actually hardly ever hear about the management side of any project - cause this is the hardest thing to do, and at the same time the most kept secret. It almost looks like every behind the scene material for any kind of project is purposefully letting people think that "suits" are only an annoyance to help keep their competition minimal.
Dude if you’re gonna be consistently uploading, I’m gonna be consistently watching, I thought your first gta 6 video was a one off that was pretty interesting but if you’re gonna keep doing this sort of thing, you can go far with it. Love the vids! I subbed!
Half a year for pc optimisation maybe, but not even saying the release date and taking a year is a money move to sell consoles and to get people to double buy. Sony probably has agreement with rockstar. This is not ps2/ps3 era. New consoles are basically pc with amd ryzen prosessors.
...Well, if they _are_ amd64 Ryzens, then I'd say that it's not about optimization. It's probably about testing instead. And maybe porting the game engine to newer GPUs, since... AFAIK PlayStation consoles don't use, say, NVIDIA GPUs, right? I think Xboxes do. Big-gulpy note: I have not owned a console with 3D graphics ever before!
Bro's like, "I'll be giving a huge giveaway at 30k subscribers" and now we're at 33k just 6 hrs after the vid is posted. Like daaaamn bro! You're killing it!
I understand why the PC port takes longer. But I feel like Rockstar do it because of financial reasons. They believe people who bought it on console will but it again on PC, which is true, I bought both GTA 5 and RDR2 on PC once it was released despite already having it on console. You can't tell me Rockstar aren't capable of releasing a working PC port on release. Their a huge company. But who am I to say anything, I'm a novice in creating games, I've mostly only screwed around on Unity here and there
Of course and there is probably a partnership with playstation, like you I bought rdr 2 on console and pc, I am going to buy a ps5 for gta 6, and many people will do it.
Bro. I never considered getting into game development or anything remotely close. But for some reason, and nothing you said in particular, I've been inspired to start learning more about it. Just want to understand more of all the hard work you and all these developers go through to create these masterpieces. Good channel man.
The attention you've been getting on your reaction video is very well deserved! When you said you'd bring something unique to the reaction video you did just that and it was nice and refreshing to see. I'm glad all those GTA6 video creators use you as a trustworthy reference. @@b3at2 The fact that a game is made on pc means nothing. Rockstar initially makes games for consoles, it means optimization and tons of other things. Optimizing for PC takes a lot more time

@@YorkReactsbut being too secretive isn't always good either. For example if they'd openly give some details about why the pc version comes later, maybe there would be less of these "it's so they get you to buy it twice" type of theories. If they never confirm or deny those "accusations" people are going to assume they are true.
So my question about this is, Rockstar is huge and has a ton of cash im sure. Xbox / microsoft has as far as I know had PC ports out Day one with all of their games. I just dont see an excuse for Rosktar to keep doing this to PC players. Its like they want to force us to buy a console so we buy the game twice.

I remember the times that everyone waited for gta v pc version because on Xbox 360 there wasn’t an option for first person view, and on pc it was revolutionary for gta franchise
Amazing stuff York! Really appreciate your down to earth explanations. I think Cyber Punk 2077 was probably one of the greatest examples of multi-platform development gone extremely wrong, and until this day I still experience occasional bugs. Rockstar truly understands what it takes to create an open world game with stability, and I think Gabe Newell stated it best when it comes to development and game delays: "Late is just for a little while, Suck is forever".
Ehh I got CP on Xbox and PC once I built it. Bugs didn't matter. It was fun. And CDPR went out of their way to try to get the game into as many gamers hands as possible(last gen even). If R* doesn't launch on PC at launch then I won't buy it. If I'm a second tier customer then your product is a second tier product. No way to impress your way into the good graces of a customer you slighted. There's an argument to be made for FOMO but I def ain't gonna have FOMO to cop a 2 year old game when R* finally releases it.

I’m not insisting anything. Everyone takes my words as gospel. It’s just one of many factors. I should have never said money now everyone is hung up on that so much. Guess what sometimes even with all the money in the world it’s not going to buy you time or talented artists. Sometimes the artists that are required to work on a game like this are not available no matter how much money you have.
As a 1st Computer Science & Engineering student, I applaud you for your explanation. As this video does really make it very clear how things work behind the scenes
Bullshit explanation when other games get released on PC and consoles day one. Rockstar just wants you to buy the game twice while giving the devs a break. He should just say that instead of making bullshit excuses
I'll save you from watching this video, the only reason Rockstar doesn't like PC is because of piracy. They want to release gta 6 and get their money's worth before releasing it to PC.
I've always been kind of fascinated by Rockstar. I grew up playing GTA 1-2-3-4-5. Spent so much time on GTA2, and when GTA3 came out, their very first 3D game, which was also very early in the 3D era for video games, I was blown away playing it. To me, Rockstar seem like they are in their own category. I have a lot of respect for some studios, and rare are the ones that still take their time before releasing games. But Rockstar, I don't know, it's like they knows things only them knows as far as game development goes. Every time they release a new game, they seem way ahead in term of technology. The scope of their (main) games are just insane, and it's always a quality product. At the same time, they are a very mystrious company. They never talk about their games, or promote them, unless it's close to release. They don't seem to do interviews, or any kind of insight about their development process. They basically don't exist other than the fact that we know the name of the company behind these games. Considering the size of the company now, and how long they've been there, it's pretty funny to see.
My biggest gripe about the PC version being delayed is that it will be spoiled to me before I even get to play it. It’s going to be almost impossible to avoid spoilers. I understand it’s easier to optimise the consoles but why not wait and release it on all systems at once. I don’t believe a company as big as rockstar can’t optimise a pc version fast enough. IMO it’s about double dipping. The PC users are too impatient to wait and will buy the console version and the pc version.
Yeah ofc they want to make more money but weren’t you listening? It takes longer for the pc version. Why would they sit on a finished game for consoles? And of course it’s going to get spoiled because there’s going to be quite a few people playing it the day it comes out, so you cant really complain about that
@@ryleypalmer I feel like it’s a valid reason to complain regardless of how many people play it. I don’t want the game spoiled before I can even get a chance to play it.
When you look at it they have to remove the coding optimizations for the custom chips in console and sometimes recode parts that those commands made possiable. Then you have the UI. Enabling mouse input isn't as easy as putting a 1 next to a compile flag. You have to code it so mouse input does something. Then you have keybinds. This can be the hardest part of PC ports as you have 20+ different keyboard layouts with each one having over 100 keys. So matching what key is pressed to the correct command is a thing that has to be done. Then you have the audio settings, in short the shortest part to make should be this as it can almost be a copy and past from console though some include extra settings in it too. You have graphics settings. Low, Medium, High and Ultra. For each preset they have to put together a texture combination which sounds easy but depending on how many textures the game has can take a lot of time. Then the exposed graphics settings so the user doesn't just get a pick of low medium high but can adjust what quality of graphics they want their self. More settings the user gets more time taken to break it out of other parts and make it able to be fully independent of everything else. etc. and so on. Then you have after the UI is set up and the graphics textures are taged correctly testing starts. They should run a basic script to find the errors in code then fix them which will take time then after they are fixed test the build in the way a user will see it not just does it run without errors. Testing on all combinations of settings so more settings more time taken per system. The reason the minimum spec on steam is above how much you actually need is the game studios cannot test everything and they most likely test the most popular system parts. In hopefully every configuration. Documenting what to be fixed for the graphical errors when they happen.
I get your comment about RS not porting PC straight away because of modders/hackers but at the same time im certain the PC profit was the best from the sheer amount of banned people rebuying the game. :D Also PC is a lot more popular these days and i wouldnt be surprised if they add somewhat modding support and 3rd party servers like FiveM ect because they have seen how popular they are and the potential income
Every game coming out nowadays has both consoles and pc versions in development at the same time so that they come out at the SAME time. Rockstar wants people to buy the game 2 times. 0 excuse for this mega rich company not to do the same.
@@YorkReactsWe don't need to. I don't need to be a chef to know my food is bad. I don't need to develop games to know this is a out of date practice trying to double dip consumers by a billion dollar company. You know sense companies usually do a PC launch first or all at the same time. You say this like Rockstar is just doing the average thing when they are the only ones doing this. And saying ps3 was easier to develop on ruins any credibility you had as every other developer says the total opposite.
@@mastersparkles1584 I don’t know if this is their current practice and it’s just my thoughts. To me it looked like PS was the preferred platform but I wasn’t aware for what reasons. Let's be honest...Rockstar wants to sell the game twice. Fair enough if updated PC graphics justify it. Another and probably the main reason is that the PC version will come with the new GTA online, which opens a whole new can of worms when it comes to bugs and needed optimization.
Love your breakdown I'm a only pc player and thinking of getting a PlayStation or Xbox closer to the release of GTA VI because of how long the PC Port will take. But your breakdown of it gave me more understanding of why it takes so long for PC. TY
2:42 thats cap, the PS3 was in almost every metric inferior to the xbox 360 (Slower GPU, split memory, complex CPU). This showed in the end product while xbox could maintain 30FPS, PS3 dropped regulary down to ~25 FPS
Its been widely confirmed from a game development angle that the ps3 was superior in what it could deliver. The process of delivering on that system was so ass though that no one could really do it well bar a few studios and 1st parties. You're right that on paper xbox had the better specs and was easier to develop for so it got more stable releases. PS3 when used properly was no slouch, lol they built a supercomputer out of em, i dont see anyone taking the 360's architecture and doing that.
@@JooshMaGoosh Really. The PS3 was _all about being used correctly._ But since it was VERY unconventionally built, well... people including Gabe Newell himself hated it. Rockstar REALLY showed their worth by using it right!
This is clearly BS, they do it for the sake of more sales, a lot of people are buying the console version first and then later are kinda forced to buy the PC version for modding and better specs too. That means Rockstar is seeing its sales doubling like magic...
"This is clearly BS," it's really not. Consoles are easy to build/polish/optimize and that's their priority first. Then they work on the PC, which does take longer. But "they do it for the sake of more sales" did you not hear what he said in the video? lol they focus where the money is

Many developers release PC versions at the same time as consoles and they work well. I would not say the same about RDR2 PC port, which has a lot of issues. GTA5 PC port works good though. I played RDR2 on PS4 and it was perfect in every way (now I see why), but I feel that not much work was done on RDR2 PC port and the main reason it was postponed was to double dip. Maybe GTA 6 PC port will be better because GTA brings more money, so more resources will be spent to make it. I don't think they will delay it for more than a year, because RDR2 was delayed for a year and GTA5 PC was delayed for a year and a half only because there was PS4 release in between.

@@Boss_Fight_Index_muki GTA V has generated Rockstar over 7 BILLION DOLLARS to date. This idea that they dont have the money, resources or time to make the PC release happen is just a lie. They want people to buy the game twice, and double their sales in the long run. This has been their model for years now. Like you said GTA is the Burj Khalifa of gaming, Rockstar know people aren't going to wait 2 years for the PC release. It's not about releasing a good PC port, it's about profits. And look, I get it, they're a business, but there's a fine line between being an ethical, customer oriented business and a shady anti consumer business.

We could step forward and show lots from the developer process for the games we make, it just isn't worth the trouble so it's easier for us to get our work done and not say a word.
@@lightweightabsorbent2008I am curious, How did you know that was the reason? Are you a developer yourself?

@matt5539 do you also think people driving ferraris is unfair?
@matt5539 you think that consoles should hold PCs back??
@matt5539This is one of the worst takes I've ever seen lol. The point of video game development is to always be pushing the limits of available hardware, which is continually progressing. If everyone had your mentality we'd still be playing Pong on Ataris.
I always wondered how a game so big can be kept under wraps so secretly! Can you make a video on What’s Rockstars protocols for keeping its games hidden until release. That’s always been interesting to me, with thousands of devs working on such a big game & what do they do to devs that they suspect of leaking info etc ?
underrated comment
I'd assume a lot of it is fear of breaking NDA and being sued into bankruptcy plus risking a well paying job that is only a dream for a lot of people.
That and I assume they go the marvel route and have most people not know any more then they work on. Much easier to keep people's mouth shut if they know very little to nothing about that bigger picture besides upper management and lead devs and designers
Sept 17 2022 happened
Bro found his audience, i am truly happy for you.
Not releasing on PC day one is a crime
GTA 6 will be the game that will make the Xbox and ps5 sell like crazy

I want to know more about how a game so large and complex is managed and directed. I understand a lot of the roles and how it usually works, but when there are hundreds of people working on the same game it’s always magic to me that it can result in a cohesive, not glitchy broken disaster.
Haha yeah it’s amazing some games even reach the finish line lol 😂 lots of times a great game has a great creative director and great HR hah

Half a year for pc optimisation maybe, but not even saying the release date and taking a year is a money move to sell consoles and to get people to double buy.
Sony probably has agreement with rockstar.
This is not ps2/ps3 era. New consoles are basically pc with amd ryzen prosessors.
And low-end Ryzen models that is...
...Well, if they _are_ amd64 Ryzens, then I'd say that it's not about optimization. It's probably about testing instead. And maybe porting the game engine to newer GPUs, since... AFAIK PlayStation consoles don't use, say, NVIDIA GPUs, right? I think Xboxes do.
Big-gulpy note: I have not owned a console with 3D graphics ever before!

But who am I to say anything, I'm a novice in creating games, I've mostly only screwed around on Unity here and there
They do, console companys pay for it.
Of course and there is probably a partnership with playstation, like you I bought rdr 2 on console and pc, I am going to buy a ps5 for gta 6, and many people will do it.

Valve and rockstar are just the biggest and best and they know what's important
I think that was miyamto but whatever
Ehh I got CP on Xbox and PC once I built it. Bugs didn't matter. It was fun. And CDPR went out of their way to try to get the game into as many gamers hands as possible(last gen even). If R* doesn't launch on PC at launch then I won't buy it. If I'm a second tier customer then your product is a second tier product. No way to impress your way into the good graces of a customer you slighted. There's an argument to be made for FOMO but I def ain't gonna have FOMO to cop a 2 year old game when R* finally releases it.

Insisting Rockstar doesn't have the cash flow to fund a joint release due to funds is nuts.

This guy needs a sponsor ASAP. York's insight is incredible.
Holy shit!!! 10x subscribers since your last video. Congrats dude!
I love to see this man happy. He's getting recognition for his great work. I
I get your comment about RS not porting PC straight away because of modders/hackers but at the same time im certain the PC profit was the best from the sheer amount of banned people rebuying the game. :D Also PC is a lot more popular these days and i wouldnt be surprised if they add somewhat modding support and 3rd party servers like FiveM ect because they have seen how popular they are and the potential income
You have a good vibe man! Thanks for calming people down!
Every game coming out nowadays has both consoles and pc versions in development at the same time so that they come out at the SAME time. Rockstar wants people to buy the game 2 times. 0 excuse for this mega rich company not to do the same.

Damn when I watched your GTAVI trailer breakdown videos you weren't even at 10k subs...congrats man!!!
As someone who's studying Game Design right now I look forward to further insides into the industry and the mind processes of someone who actually works on games.
Man so happy to see this rapid growth. You offer such a unique perspective and I'm glad to see someone deserving of the recognition get it. Last video I watched of yours last week you were at like 7k subs. The video before that you were at 3k when I subbed. Looking forward to the content you come out with going forward.
Thanks man cheers to some bourbon 🥃 hah it’s been a wild ride I think it’s finally slowing down. So grateful though I can’t even put it into words.
You deserve each and every subscribe, as someone who has been trying to get into 3D modeling for a while, i wish you would create a channel focusing on rigging and animations in general, just smalls tips and tricks, that will be huge for the animation community and everyone else trying to get into that, especially coming from such a great animator like yourself, keep up the good work, i am glad i found your channel
Your far more honest and down to earth than other youtubers speaking about gta 6 thanks for your insight man its been helpful
I love hearing some of the stories about working on these. Could you shed some light on the development stages of a game like GTA V or RDR 2? How do they begin, where do priorities lie? Where are major changes made and when does the polishing start? How is the project managed? for instance, if you make an animation, who approves it and how does it get added into the game.
Nvm source code leaked
@kaas12 not much documentation in the files. I have the code
@@tposman1547 Still, with internal documents and project structure you can kinda tell how they work and how they work together with external companies.
I found your channel probably a day after the gta 6 trailer released, and when I saw your video talking about the developers already knowing how good the game is going to be. I was like "oh that's interesting" now with you pumping out more videos I'm like "I gotta see what he's going to say next!" because it's fun to learn about the behind the scenes.Thank you and all the other thousands of people who've worked on the games we love today.
I really enjoyed this technical explanation about behind the Game Development cycle. Gives me insight and felt thankful for game devs to put their time in cost effecient manner. Subscribed ❤
I saw your first video the other day after the gta6 trailer and I instantly subbed. You seem like a really cool dude and your videos are really well explained and you're interesting to watch!
This channel is going to grow a lot I feel like. Awesome to see an awesome fellow game developer talk about technical stuff!
Or get shut down, I mean Obbe Vermeij can't even have a blog without it being taken down by T2 or R* soooo idk lol to be fair he did talk about agent (which never released so i think maybe thats why but still)
To clarify he wasnt legally told to take it down only that a lot of people from r* reached out and told him to shut it down. So he did so out of respect for them not wanting to burn bridges. Take that how you will.
I’m one of the newcomers and I’m loving these videos! Good stuff man keep it coming
Great video man! Is it true that GTA 5 was developed with mainly ps3 and xbox 360 in mind? or did rockstar have like a ps4 dev kit or something, it kind of blows my mind how detailed that game is for the ps3 and i though it was made for the ps4 and they just lowered the texures and details so that the ps3 can run it
Isn't it crazy that gta4 and 5 ran on the same console with the difference in graphics
I like this type of content more than just a simple reaction. Keep up theese games analysis, I really enjoy them🙌
Youre killing it big dog keep it up. I think I speak for a lot of new fans and followers when you consider that we have been left in the dark for so long about a lot of things Rockstar, to have a former insider speak on the things we all have had questions to. It only makes sense why you blew up so fast. Plus all your knowledge and positive energy only makes the content better. Thank you, I cannot wait to see more.
Honestly u deserve the subs and likes, great information in your videos.
Thanks again for the insight Mike! Just hope GTA6 won't be too delayed for PC. It's gonna look SICK on some good hardware!
Man i just don't want spoilers just because i don't have a console :')
