We had the same problems when I worked as a COBOL developer on an IBM mainframe for a large corporation. Middle management would promise the end-users and the execs the moon, but would never give us enough time to complete the software. So we would turn it over to the users full of bugs. We would have SEV-1s out the wazooo for months, and the execs and the end-users would be very unhappy with us.

    • @DexLuther
      @DexLuther Год назад +9

I had the same experience as a game tester for 10 years. Also, the sheer number of different PC builds and software/firmware/driver variations makes it impossible to predict what the game will be running on or any interference that may occur (like virus software affecting how things are loaded/triggered because it's constantly trying to scan things).
That's why PC games are tested on the most popular PC builds and a few variations. But the testing machines are usually devoid of any other software and are fully updated.
If you have a system that's built from a bunch of random parts you got and hasn't been updated in 6 months and/or has software doing things in the background affecting your file system or items in memory, it's not the developer's fault. They couldn't have predicted that and it's really not their responsibility.
If you want a chance at the cleanest PC gaming possible, then stop trying to be different and build a PC that's the same as everyone else using 1st party/brand name parts, keep it updated with legit 1st party drivers and software, and probably ditch most of the "utility" software. Especially software that scans memory or tries to update drivers for you.

This is why I rarely nowadays buy a game at launch, I wait for the inevitable patches to fix the performance on PC. If more and more people start doing this it's going to impact sales and make the platform less appealing for Devs to release their games on, something needs to be done.

HOWEVER, they let it "cook" and the product is a game world with so much internal design logic and immersion that people are still today figuring out things the devs hid in the game. They made a world that BEGS people to explore and learn more. Which is precisely what open world formula is supposed to give the player. Most open worlds, end up boring people--not intriguing people to explore it.

Well one of the main causes is Unreal Engine. It's been notoriously bad on PC with nearly every game having shader stuttering, ray tracing on it seems to be far heavier on the CPU than it should be, and it in general seems to have issues with LOD on PC CPU utilization. Remember that the Arkam games were also UE3. Unfortunately Epic has suggested that early UE5 games will still have the same problem with them only recently finding a way to fix it.

People talk about current gen and last gen for consoles but fail to realize that on PC it's 1000x worse. You have a very large amount of people still running 10 series cards and other tech from 2-4 generations ago on PC. So at some point there is going to be issues and that point is coming up very quick. The fact is, it's easier to develop for 1-2 generations of tech on consoles than it is for 2-4 generations of tech on pc's that can be mashed all together.

One of the major problems with a lot of games is superfluous coding. Think of how many times games have been datamined for deleted content of future content. While the numbers vary, it would be easy to imagine that if a game is 10GB on your HDD, it could be streamlined down to 6 or 7. The larger the size, the more inefficient it becomes. However, it can't be helped. Games are built in stages, over a long period of time, with many hands touching the project, and sections of the game kind of become locked in. Even when something is cut, it can be easier to just leave the code in sometimes. More than that, deleting code wily-nily can have devastating effects on the entire build. Again, the more hands there are on the project, the less streamlined the code becomes.
The way around that many devs use is to test it to make sure the game runs, and then ignore all the minor problems it because they don't hurt anyone, which is doable on a single console. Think of any Bethesda game ever. Yes, they run on a console, just barely. The moment you play them on a PC everything can go crazy. The moment you get a pc to run a barely holding together game, the whole thing can potentially fall apart. Powerful PCs can brute force buggy or inefficient coding, but the average PC has a rough time with it, even if it should be more powerful than the console that it was first running on. In the case of a game like Cyberpunk 2077, gamers with the new 3080 all said the game was great and ran like a dream, but everyone else had major problems.
Honestly, the paragons in this regard are actually Nintendo. Once you take the limitations of the console into account, many games seem to be running on 50% magic. A major part of that, especially in the past, was the extremely efficient coding. Though 3rd party games on the switch buck this reputation, 1st party games from Nintendo were almost always perfectly complete on launch. Amazingly close to perfect, because they had to get it right the first time, and established a reputation of doing so.
And therein, once again, lies the solution. Give the devs more time. Look at Metroid 4. The game was teased forever ago, and was apparently very far into development, and they essentially restarted the whole thing. While its no guarantee, we can safely assume that if they care that much, whatever they eventually give us, it will be better than what they would have given us if they hadn't course corrected.
Long story short, I'm a PC gamer, and I want my games to be good. There are a thousand games that catch my eye every year, but I only have time to play 10-20 of them. Give me good games to play, please. Good day.

It all started when games moved over from mostly DX9 with mild DX10 support to DX11... this architecture started a wave of games with huge file sizes, the first that I can recall was RAGE being over 24GB at the time. Despite it's unique texture rendering choices this meant that all textures were massive in size but even consoles at the time, XBOX 360 and PS3, suffered atrocious performance issues and render distance was completely terrible... this game alone made me move to PC, though the PC version suffered many issues but they were soon fixed and the game ran fine. However todays games run on DX12 and for some reason require the user to cache shaders before they run the game and most devs use a "real-time" shader stream which causes the game to stutter in new areas or if you pan too fast. I can bet that most games these days have horrible garbage collection and don't utilise Occlusion culling like they used to... even GPU's that cost more than cars can't tame video games that don't even visually look that much better than games from 5 years ago.

Thank you! This is bothering me a lot. Games that don't look much, if at all better than their prequels from 2015 still having the audacity to run terrible even at low settings.
Prime example: NFS Unbound vs NFS 2015. I can run NFS 2015 Maxed out at 60+ fps. But NFS Unbound runs like trash even on the low preset. Funny thing is ; altough Unbound's Ultra preset does look better than 2015's, it's low preset definitely does NOT look better than 2015's Ultra.
One of the key problems is even when a game actually has decent optimization, it doesn't scale down well enough for slower hardware. A gpu that has half the power does not get half the fps, it gets less. And lowering the resolution by %50 does not get you %50 extra performance. Even in cases where you're %100 gpu limited. I've seen infinite examples of this in Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite games.

This is a good reason we have graphics APIs like DirectX. Developers don't have to create a game and optimize it for multiple hardware configs, they just need to make sure it's compatible with the API. The hardware is then also compatible with said API and thus the game. Further performance tweaking can come from driver optimizations.

I'm glad you pointed out some of the differences between PC & console.
It used to be pretty understood, but now people have this idea that consoles are simply "weak PC's," and that you can compare specs 1:1.
Historically, there's a reason why consoles could continue to put out quality versions of games years after the came out, as well as increasingly better looking games later in their lives, despite the specs not changing.
Having a unified system, a stagnant SoC, integrated GPU/CPU, RAM, etc all working in unison, etc. as well as tons of microcode/improved development tools allowing better performance than previous releases on the same platform
Yes, x86 has made it easier to develop across multiple platforms, but they're still different. You highlighting the huge variety & moving target that is the PC gaming sphere is a massive difference.
It's why me spending $2,500 on building a new rig in 2021, only to see certain PS5/SX games pushing out comparable performance on Digital Foundry breakdown, made me just resign myself to accepting this is just how it'll always be.
Many of us love to throw around "the PC version is better," as if ALL PC's are better, and ALL PC gamers have these best builds. They don't.
I love PC gaming so much that I never even bought a PS4 or XB1, which still continued throughout this new gen. I did eventually bite & get a Switch, but PC is far & away my preferred platform, ever since building my first rig in 2002.
BUT... I've grown away from being a PC elitist. And I hate seeing people claim they built some monster rig that gets 4k/120 fps/MAX settings for $400 & a stick of gum. It's BS.
Consoles may not be for me, but I 100% understand why they're popular, and why so many prefer them.

The main advantage PC games have over their console counterparts: mods. PC games can be modded in ways the console versons cannot. But that's about the only thing.
Consoles are built primarily for the purpose of playing games. That's what they do, that's all they do, and they do it damned well.
PCs don't run games as well as conoles do (not for the same price tag, anyway), but they can do a hell of a lot more than consoles can. That's the trade-off.
I like the versatility of the PC; it's why I won't go into consoles. But, like you, I'm not going to "hate" on those who prefer consoles.

As far as so called "corporate greed" is concerned I'm afraid it is a very necessary evil. If companies wish to stay in business they need to make a profit so they can pay staff, invest in better equipment, pay share holders etc. Working for a large company is the perfect example of trickle down economics that this society relies upon, but I digress.

While the game does not run the greatest on PC, on console its even worse, with framerate that can drop below 30 in busy places. While games on PC that cant keep 60 fps are usually considered a bad port.) Its just people on PC are far more critical about performance, on average more tech savvy and because they are already on a PC you are going to see a lot more criticism on the web. Also there are many games that run very poorly on consoles too, especially the ones that come out near the end of console generation.

And disagree with ur last point. Ghost of Tsushima and Last of Us Part II are a Swansong for the PS4 generation. my problem with pc gaming (yeah i know for some people it may sound stupid) is that when you have a full time job and other rensposibilities and you need for 1 hour per day to relax playing a video game, you just want to play without any problems or starting to see which settings are the best for your system etc. Consoles you just download instert the disk and you play. Without any hiccups or stuff. Yeah pc gaming is far better but as i grow older and the time to play games gets lower, i tend to realize that maybe consoles especially nowadays where they have evoved very much are a better purchase . For 550 euros(in my country) you get a ps5 and then you have almost 500 euros more for games to play. And to build a pc system you need 1000+ euros (again in my country) and then you have to buy the peripherals, and also deal with whatever my arise.

It's just the nature of the market. Any responsible gaming company [an oxymoron, I know 😆] has to put their resources where the money will be.
Desktops are superceded by laptops for productivity (school/work), but PC ownership has been on the decline for over a decade. In major emerging markets, there often is no PC gaming culture, or it's genre-locked, to MMOs or RTS/eSports.
Mobile & console together make up 80-85% of the US/EUR market, (90%+ in Asia) and have *all* of the year-over-year growth for at least the past 5-7yrs that I've been following it.
PC is still the place for indies & control-heavy genres, but it's just not a mass-market platform anymore, so it doesn't often get the TLC that it really needs to shine.

@@mandisaw Most of what you said is simply not true and frankly is complete BS!! There are now a estimated 1.75 billion PC gamers worldwide, which is up from an estimated 1.55 billion PC gamers just over a year ago. Year upon year, that figure has done nothing but increase. It's also much larger than the estimated 1.05 billion console gamers worldwide (and that's ALL console gamers combined). It's also expected to grow to beyond 2 billion PC gamers by the end of 2024.
PC's also currently make up 21% of all game revenue worldwide, compared to 28% for consoles and 51% for mobile. Yeah, consoles earn more, however again you have to take into consideration, that's ALL of the consoles combined (PS, XBox, Switch, the older consoles and even the emulator knockoffs) and the rampant amount of PC piracy that happens in poorer nations.
Also, a recent US survey into gaming showed that 35% of the US population stated they regularly (8+ hours per week) play games on PC, that was compared to 32% on console and 58% on mobile devices (the consoles came in last place). Finally, less than a month ago Steam recorded their largest amount of consecutive players online at once (over 50 million).
Sorry but all current statistics, reports and projections point to the fact tha PC gaming is actually on the rise and not decreasing like you state.
Also, although PC sales themselves have decreased slightly in the past 2-3 years (BTW, so have console sales), there was still an increase in the amount of active PC gamers and revenue earned though PC games (up $2.8b) Also, on that note, there was still an estimated 280 million pre-built PC's & Laptops sold last year, with around an estimated 2/3rd's of them (~175 million) ending up in peoples homes as home PC's and/or gaming PC's. In context that's as many "gaming capable" home PC's sold last year alone, than all of the PS4's and XB1's that have been sold over the past 10 years.
As for emerging markets and "there often is no PC gaming culture"... Again that's simply not true, if anything its the opposite case. Currently the top 4 largest areas (population wise) when it comes to emerging markets are East Asia (China), South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), South East Asia/Pacific (Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia & Malaysia) and Latin America (Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Mexico & Chile). 3 out of those 4 markets have been shown to currently favour either PC's and/or mobile devices for gaming, over traditional consoles. Only Latin America favours consoles over PC. However it was only just recently that consoles overtook PC by 28% vs 26% of the market share there. This is especially true in the 2 largest emerging markets (by population). China where consoles barely make up 18% of their annual gaming market share (BTW, China is now #1 in the world when it comes to gaming revenue earnt and the market there is still growing at a rapid rate). And South Asian countries like India and Pakistan, where both PC's and mobile completely dominate the consoles (85% market share between them).
Where the hell you got that figure of 90%+ of the gaming revenue in Asia is made via consoles, is simply beyond me. China and S. Korea alone make up almost half of the Asian annual game revenue and in both those countries PC & mobile gaming, heavily dominate the market. Yep, in Japan then maybe, but that's now a shadow of its former self. Also several other "smaller" emerging markets favour either PC or mobile gaming over console gaming eg. Poland (PC), Eastern Europe (PC), Turkey (mobile), North Africain countries (mobile) and the Middle East (equally mobile & PC). There's only really Central and West Africa that really favours the consoles and mobile devices, over PC's (due to cost). However, it will take years for them to fully develop and emerge into market earners.

I think the problem isn't PC gaming per se, but rather many (most) games are being released unfinished. It seems more apparent on the PC being we expect more powerful hardware=better visuals/performance. However there are countless examples recently of released games that are buggy, have poor performance or are not feature complete (hogwarts, dead space, pokemon scarlet etc). Generally, devs/publishers will fix the game after a few weeks/ months and since on the PC games end up dirt cheap a little later (you can pick up a fixed Gotham Knights on the PC for £17 atm!) the moral of the story is don't pre-order/ buy games until they've been fixed - there's plenty of games to be getting on with. The problem I have with this is what happens to the gaming industry if everybody did this ....

It is because Devs are using most likely some kind of "converter" program that makes a PC prot of a source material. This is at least the only way some PC ports can be made. I mean, it is AI making them. There is no way a human being can do a "not working" PC port and be like: "This is fine".
I think the situation is getting worse & worse over time. In the past people went mad if there was no proper mouse & keyboard support. And this is something that we should expect even today, right ? That is like making a console port and not implementing Controller support lol.... It is something obvious. But, sadly - less & less PC ports have a proper mouse & keyboard mapping. Devs jut assume every PC player has a controller - which is not the case because you need to play many games that need a controller. One will not buy a Controller, just for one game. It is like, we are back to the 80-ties where every Commodore had a joystick bundled and it was expected from "a PC Gamer" to have a gaming peryferial (Joystick in this case).

It definitely is corporate greed. Who said corporate greed consists of impractical decisions? Naturally, all these decisions look good on paper to a psychopath or someone operating similar to one in the name of performance to get bigger salaries, promotions, and bonuses. The thing is if your friend were making those decisions and knew you were a PC gamer, they might actually put the proper amount of work in to port games to PC. That, as it turns out, is the only human thing to do. Maybe, it's all right for a company that makes 100s of million of profit to sacrifice a handful of millions just to, and this might sound bizarre, improve the lives of many people, impact society some, spread a piece of art in the best way to as many people as possible. Yes, that is impractical if the numbers just cannot work. The thing here is it's very practical. They just want to be corporate psychopaths and optimize heavily on squeezing out each additional million.
What they do to PC gamers just isn't right. Pay more to port correctly. Use companies with better port track records. Do it for the people involved not to maximize every cent received. This is such a problem only because PC gamers aren't boycotting companies that act like they don't give a shit about customers. Often, something similar to a boycott happens with reviews all stating the port is garbage, so ports to get a little love eventually usually. But this shouldn't ever have gotten to a point where people have to have that miserable experience, share it, and cause an impromptu boycott. Just do the human thing and port things well for the love of the craft, to improve people's lives, to spread joy.

From a developer and publisher points of view consoles are always the favorite platform to make a game because:
1-They can output a high quality resolution and performance (at leat in 9th Gen ) while they are marginally cheaper than their equal PC. That means they are more accessible to public and sell better.
2- the games are developed for an exclusive hardware which results in faster development time and more efficient games with less issues.
    3. No need for optimization. Games setting on consoles are almost locked to a certain setting for a specific hardware and software. That's is absolutely opposite on PC and most developers don't even bother optimizing their games since time is limited.
    4. Not every one cares about 4K resolution, 120 fps or ray tracing. Most people play games casually and for them consoles are the first choice.

Remember diablo 3. The game was deliberately made always online single player for PC version even though they knew full well that internet quality will never meet the standards for HD quality gaming even decades down the road. Yet they kept doubling down on the excuse that it was to improve gaming experience......meanwhile when the console port of that game was released PC users were thoroughly outraged because the console version had offline single player right out of the box. To add further , any bug you see , despite the platform , it must be something done in a not optimal way , that can work sometimes , but when some conditions changes it may misbehave, if done properly and optimized it should work on all platform equally .

Very informative video indeed. im extremly frustrated with this as well i just want to enjoy my games on any console i want but givin the situations thats very hard. i've been pc gaming more that cosole gaming as of late just because its more comfortable control wise and diver but its customizable, i can create any type of experince i want on pc and change how the flow of gameplay is just because of all the configs out there. i may not be able to. but its frustrrating because all of the pc ports of games i love are almost unplayable. exept resident evil so far its been a dream come true playing them on my 3050 but things like gotham knights, .hack and alot if not all modern final fantasy give me so many issues that honestly shouldnt even exist.

It sounds like Square Enix has given up on PC... with the absurd specs of Forspoken and now talks of the FF7 Remake Part 2 never being ported, it's really painting a grim reality right now.

I appreciate what R* does with their pc versions of their more modern games. I don't mind having to wait an extra year to get a full pc version that runs and looks better than the console version.
The fact they actually take the extra time to give a real pc version is genuinely refreshing.

I pretty much only game on PC now. The only console I own is an Nintendo Switch. There are so many games that come out and I often don’t have tons of time so I never seem to run out of games to play. I spend a lot on PC hardware, being a Software Engineer, and have always found that when a game is well optimized PC will always deliver the best experience if you have good enough hardware.

      @@whiskeygamer9402 My current build has:
      Motherboard: Asus Prime Z690
      CPU: Intel I7 12700K
      Graphics: MSI Suprim RTX 3080
      Ram: 32GB DDR5 5200Mhz
      Power Supply: 850 Watts
      Storage: NVME Gen 4 SSD
Have thought about upgrading graphics to the AMD 7900XTX but my 3080 is still handling games without much issue and Nvidia’s 40 series is definitely overpriced right now.
