Rockstar still uses 3ds Max as their level editor that they've made plugins for. If you look in the GTA V source code and the GTA VI leaks back in September 2022, they are actively still using 3ds max.
I definitely like to see this kind of behind the scenes content. I used to spend a lot of time with 3ds Max making custom content for Neverwinter Nights, and keeping within the polygon limits on those models was always a fun challenge.
Haha yeah this behind the scenes video brought back so many memories for me working in 3D max in my parents basement learning biped and doing cringe animations hahaha 😝

@@YorkReacts Shoot forgot about how strict they are with NDA's and stuff. Makes sense because they're almost the only ones using it. Would like to know how you got into animating. Do you only create the animations or do you also implement them in the code? This is interesting to me because I've recently got into modding and learning how games work.
man I love seeing these things, somehow you make a humanized form of the big R*, we as players only see the final product, but to see that in the end the developers are not robots in an office but just as creative like any person is great
About quads and triangles... Things might be designed in quads initially nowadays because it's a cleaner way but doesn't all geometry end up as triangles eventually when made ready for in-engine? And especially before animating it? Since there's this ambiguity about quads and they might "break in half" in a way we don't want.
i have just started playing gta vice city definitive edition for the first time on the ps5. i couldn’t simply play gta vi when it comes out knowing the original paved the way and seeing how it is loved still by millions and rip to the legend himself RL. taking my time playing vice city to enjoy and explore this masterpiece. played my first GTA at 4 years old being gta san andreas. hope to live on to continue seeing Rockstar Games create more masterpieces.
Right on man!! That’s what’s I like to hear. Playing the older games is so much fun and a great way to introduce yourself for what’s to come. Vice city is my favorite!! Started it all for me
The London man at the start is a well known UK man called “ DANNY DYER “ He’s been lots of tv and films , proper Londoner … Rockstar also made the film football factory about football hooliganism in the uk in the mid 2002s which Danny dyer was the main character!! Check it out “ the football factory “
Man I remember watching these clips one by one on the old R* North flash site way back in the day. They really are such a treasure as R* seldom publicizes ANY behind the scenes materials whatsoever, espeically this candidly.
Man, I could sit with you for hours and chat about animation techniques, rigging, development … the entire process really. It is so intriguing to see how much technology has advanced … like you said as well, I was surprised to see MoCap being used back in an early 2000s game. It really shows how advance Rockstar is and has always been. They truly push the limits of what can be done in an open-world game. What is funny to me, is that no one in today’s day of gaming, will even touch a game that is developed to run less than at least 60fps, because hey, it’s 2024 right? We have hardware that supports 144, 240, 360hz/fps now. However, when you think about how Rockstar’s target is *still* only 30fps, no one bats an eye - and that’s because of the incredible immersion and detail. Sure, we’d love to see GTA 6 on PS5 at 120fps, but you know this game is only going to be a 30fps target, and we are perfectly fine with that, because of what the game is! Luckily, we can expect better numbers on PC, but in terms of console gaming, the hardware will be pushed to the max, and there is *a lot* of optimization and tricks being done to make sure we see that 30fps target that they are working so incredibly hard to achieve. I absolutely love this stuff Mike! Please keep *this* kind of content coming!
Ahhhh man yeah I love this stuff and you are right I don’t mind the game getting released at 30fps because I know why it needs to get released at that frame rate. It’s hard to push a game like gta to over 120fps and it’s not really needed unless you are doing competition and competitive fps style modes and missions.
@@YorkReacts - EXACTLY! GTA isn’t the type of game that needs to run at 120fps, granted, PvP has really picked up online, but that’s not the focus of the game.
