I take the new Speed Twin for a test ride and review to see how it performs. A retro styled naked motorcycle, in Triumphs modern classic range with a 1200cc Bonneville engine. With updates to the suspension and brakes the Speed Twin is a performance based retro motorcycle.
In competition with the Kawasaki Z900RS, it has a lot to live up to. Lets see how she rides.

Hi there redang, my local triumph dealer has a demonstator speed twin in that lovely baja orange paint scheme that you you mentioned at the start of this great review and i have to agree that when you see it for real and not in photos it looks awesome. I wasnt to sure at first when that colour was announced but it really pops in the natural daylight. Hope to test ride one soon when this awful rainy weather has left us, once again great video and all the best ride safe cheers from gary.

I have a 20' Speed Twin and I disagree on the rear shocks. Triumph thought "Retro" was 1960's tech. Being able to balance the bike for the riders weight dose help a lot. Several after market shocks that can be swapped out from budget to high end and any of those is better than the budget stock shocks. I describe the riding position as upright, but a slight tilt forward. It is a nice position at higher speeds for wind blast, but it keeps the pressure off your wrists and you can look around easy.
Yup fair enough, they are by no means the best stock shocks around! Easily swapped out though. All in all I thought felt like a pretty premium bike 👍
I am a fan of this bike and the Scrambler 1200. Big twin = torque, and it's that that gets you going. Good review.

I think Triumph produces the best looking and well built retro motorcycles. Very clean looking. Excellent quality and feel when riding 👍. I like The extra weight on the bikes. I’m riding not racing ! Great review

Having test ridden it twice I can confirm your views. Loved it but I still hesitant with the street triple, very different bikes but they both appeal to me.
Its a tricky one, I suppose it just depends what you want from the bike.
The bike is brilliant, with some shortcomings... The suspension is "meh"... I had to install Ohlins shocks, K-Tech forks and an Ohlins damper to get it to handle the way I want.
The good news is that Triumph left a lot of power on the table, that they crippled with software... they pulled 8 degrees of ignition timing at wide open throttle, they used the ride by wire tables to not allow the throttlebodies to open all the way no matter how much throttle you give it, etc...
We went in with TuneECU and got rid of all of that nonsense and then tuned it with stock headers, an X-pipe(decat) and free flowing mufflers, and got almost 104hp at the wheel on the dyno, and a whopping 85ft/lbs of torque.
Between the suspension upgrades and all that extra power, it's now a proper sportbike, hiding under a tweed jacket...

Just traded in my 2019 Speed Twin for a 2023 Thruxton RS and wow. WOW. The RS is absolutely amazing and handles like a matured, higher performance sport bike.

Hi my friend. Enjoy a lot your videos. You have a very kind way of talking about this machines, that we love, so I thank you for that, because for me it means a high quality work.
The first Bonneville that I got to try was the Thruxton, and man, that rumbling engine was a very satisfying sensation to have! My problem with this bikes concerns to my background experience, Yamaha XSR 900 ABARTH edition, KTM SDGT which I mention just to explain a certain level of disappointment that I felt when I’ve ridden these bikes. The lack of that top end…it just wasn’t there, sadly, because this Bonnevilles have everything else at a very high level.
Secondary I tested this speed twin ( the Thruxton or the speed twin are very attractive bikes to the eye) and the general impressions were the same and lesser than the first trial with the Thruxton- which I found more appealing, besides the difference of price tags -, and finally I tested the T120, the Triumph I really decided to buy. This was ok, because it stopped my hunger for speed or fast riding. It really relaxed me and I understood that the spirit of the riding was another thing. I still have the bike, but I find it a little too low on its height but that’s perfectly manageable. Although, I haven’t tried any of the scramblers yet , but I definitely will, in a short term of time, I hope,and try to accomplish that. I’m particularly curious about testing the XE model, once that I usually feel myself at home riding taller bikes.
But there’s one thing I’ve got to admit:- This old style bikes are astonishing beautiful bikes to ride, and that counts to bring us happiness and the whole joy of riding, the sound of their torquy engines, the overall quality of construction, the paintings, components and the attention to detailing, the refinement of the general design, are attributes that simply convert this machines into the group of premium objects assimilated to the concept of excellency and collectible motorcycles. These Bonnevilles are more than just bikes. They are works of Art . 👌🏻✌🏻

I personally really liked the Kawasaki Z900RS, as a modern classic bike. The inline 4 is just so smooth and has a lovely top end. At the end of the day it is all about how the bikes make us feel, so many great options out there. Take care and enjoy your ride.

Unfortunately, here in Portugal the Kawasaki commercial policy is too strict and they often don’t have motorcycles for test ride, which is unthinkable to me as a marketing strategy. Consequently, their sales, since ever I can remember, are marginal. Every other representative brands of the motorcycle world think and act differently offering their ranges of machines available for customers to test ride the respective models. Only Kawasaki does this , you can get the motorcycle if you order and pay for the bike, but they don’t use to permit to test ride the bikes, at least the big and more expensive ones, like the H2 1000 XS that I was interested but after all, I’ve ended to buy the KTM SDGT, because at the Kawasaki dealership I could only look and seat on the bike at the dealer’s premises but couldn’t test ride it 😳🙄and to me, that kind of limitations are frontally against my principles concerning commerce’s due process principles, so I say no to that lacking of normal standards and professional behavior. And because of that, I can’t confirm your relevant impressions about that specific bike although I have enough experience about the other three Japanese manufacturers, Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki.
Yes, you’re 100% spot on when you say that I have a big crush on motorcycles once it represents a form of Art and being able to ride them, the necessary skills to do it properly in every different environment this activity take place, is a form of Art too, and that is true fascinating to my view.
I follow with attention your channel content as I appreciate the way you address their subjects and objects and at the same time the cruising niche that I never explored and I feel that the moment to change some personal views about the several pleasures of riding motorcycles as I’m ready, at least, to recognize, it’s potencial interest, for experience. The cruisers segment wasn’t appealing to me, mostly because I don’t simpatize with the American stereotype of bikers that ride those kind of bikes and because I never aloud my self to ride a bike with a body position that wasn’t leaned forward or in maximum seated in an upright body position. Personal conventions that maybe it’s time to challenge.

I only agree with all the positive remarks! But the one thing that fail the bike for me is the size, I`m too tall… Too tight for my legs! Absolutely love the engine though! Have to continue with my adventure bike. Keep up the nice work!😀
👍 There are definitely more positives than negatives with this bike! Yes I am not that tall and I even found it very narrow. Can't go wrong with a good adventure bike these days 😁

RAR, you're not the only rider to like, but not love the T120. Other reviews seem to share a similar response to varying degrees. Hope as the weather improves to see more videos from you.

I chose my 2019 model over the Z900, but it was a very close choice as I'd never owned a Triumph before. Add a set of handlebar risers and it toured across France just fine last year. Only issue I've had to date is engine paint flaking off in the 38deg heat.
I think they are both quite equal choices in terms of quality etc... Really just depends on your preference in power delivery I suppose! Great to hear of one being used for touring 😎
I like this one Red hard choice between the new RS Street triple at a similar price I am thinking maybe the Kawasaki would just edge it would love to try both and then the Street RS . Good one 👌👍

2023 Speed Twin 900 is virtually the same as the 2022 Street Twin 900. Just a name change, unfortunately.

Yes there is an LCD screen with gear indicator on under the analogue dials 👍

The 900 is a 5 speed. That's why it used to be called a Street Twin. Not a good long haul road bike.

As a former owner of a 2016 Thruxton R I have to say that it did not stoke any fire in my heart either but the T120 does even though it is heavier, slower, doesn't brake as well or have as premium a suspension. No accounting for taste I guess!😀
I think the Speed Twin is a great bike, but yes I just did not fall in love with it. Just goes to show stats and specs really are not all that counts. It is so true that it is about how the bike makes you feel 👍

some kind of shortage of Japanese bike in the US over the last year. No one has Z900 , z700 anything. But Triumph and Ducati you can find full supplies all day at bike shops. I ended up with a 2022 T120 red and gold tank. Anyways I really wanted to try the Z900rs, but no one has any so there is that.
That is a shame, however the Speed Twin is a brilliant bike. Just depends on personal preference really, when comparing to the Z900
My experience with my '22 speed twin is the bike is very good 0-100mph with the factory tune. Unfortunately with me living in Montana, I find it a little underwhelming out on the highway when I'm borderline crouching down behind the Puig windscreen. I'm anxious to load a custom tune into the ECU to allow the mods I've already done to work to their maximum potential. In stock tune its a bit tame above 5000rpms in 5-6gear.
👍 Yea can understand that for sure! Plenty of useable power but at higher rev range it can gas out a bit, nature of a twin I suppose. I would think a custom remap would work nicely. You can always revert back to stock. Cheers
The layout of the engine has little to do with why the bike acts this way in factory tune. Nowadays alot of manufacturers sell multiple bikes with the same engine (triumph being a prime example) and tune them accordingly for the various levels of trim. The Speed Twin actually has the top of the line engine in the Bonneville lineup. The same as the Thruxton RS now with this second gen. They just take a smidge of power away at the very top of the rpm range of the tune. That way when you go to the dealer and check them all out together, the Truxton will seem to rev a bit more freely and obviously be louder with the Vance & Hines mufflers. I understand an inline 4 has different characteristics than parallel

I have test ridden this bike back to back with Z900 and I far preferred the Triumph. The Z was jerky very close ratio but by far best looking. When I rode the triumph which I almost didn’t bother on looks, I fell in love. However, the price is crazy. I also think the suspension is cheap letting bike down. I would buy one in an instant if wasn’t so crazy expensive
👍 Interesting to hear your view after testing the two bikes back to back. I think I may personally prefer the Z900, but will reserve judgment until I have ridden both back to back! Think for a performance/retro road bike I may prefer the 4 cylinder. Both great bikes though no doubt. Cheers

Why do people have difficulty in understanding that once you're upto decent speeds you will never hear the exhaust properly. The noise emits from the end as apposed to the induction noise which you'll have a better chance of hearing.
Take out the baffles. or cut the pipes down and go 70mph down the road and the wind noise will still be louder.
True! However cruising around at 30/40 mph with a nice rumble is something not to over look

I would personally go for the R9T 👍 Just has more character and I also prefer the looks with the boxer engine!

Lovely bike but the black handlebars look cheap, especially from the saddle. The exhaust note on the video is great.

Just bought a 2020 with 3200 miles on it. At 70 on the freeway, hit the throttle and was over 100 in a flash. Super tight, high integrity bike. A little disappointed that the turn sigs aren't self-cancelling though.

Bad roads!! It is a stiffer suspension set up than on other Bonnevilles, but it is well damped for the average UK road. Just a bad choice of road 🥴
I believe you have it wrong when it comes to the exhaust. Low down lovely. Higher revs it Screams! And that scream makes me want to give it even More stick

I think the 900cc engines make a better day to day bikes, but the 1200 speed twin looks the dogs do dars.
Yes the 900cc is a great engine for every day and to have fun with. I think the 1200 just adds that extra muscle if you want to smooth things out a bit at higher speeds etc...
the simpler it gets, the more expensive it becomes... considering its price they should have fitted decent rear suspensions

Don't any of you guys have friends who can film a few shots of the motorcycle you are riding moving down the road? It gets really old seeing the handlebars on every video. Why don't you guys just share one video track and do voiceovers?
Can be tricky to ask a friend to come along on every video! Unfortunately we don't all have the budget to hire a camera man/woman. Voice overs are not my style, I prefer the more immersive commentary when riding. Each to there own.

What we are increasingly being offered: two wheeled automobiles with huge engines, no consideration of weight or handling, and a bevy of needless electronic gizmos to justify a higher price tag. How has this come about? Easy, as the video shows: true motorcycling roads have been replaced by boring straight line highways. Handling? No need. Why bother.
O don't know, think I got a few "twisties" in! But yes engines are getting ludicrously big. I guess part of it is to try and retain the power response and still meet emissions
