  • Two years old and already an update that was driven by Euro 5 but and this is a big BUT I'd like to thank Euro 5 (instead of criticizing them) this time because it made Triumph bring this motor to life and now it says: "play with me, let's go have some fun!" almost to the point of being a naked bike.

    The most addictive part of riding my Thruxton RS is definitely doing pulls from 3k-5k while boppin' around town. The torque band is just great. Having 75 ft/lbs on tap by 2500 is fun and makes commuting a breeze. I can imagine the Speed Twin's ergos making it just that much better of a daily rider.

    In my opinion competition to Speed Twin is the RNineT & Pure, not the R1250R but hey. Also Honda has the CB1000 but then you would be right to tell me that it is way too modern to be included as direct competition! Gonna sit back and enjoy the ride now!

    My new Speed twin has just hit 1000km. I love it more than any bike I’ve ridden in the last 50 years. Yup got my license at 16😎. Anyway it is so easy as a commuter and handles beautifully. Unfortunately due to lockdowns I have not had it out on the twisties, but confident it will make me smile more. Ohh did I mention the torque. I have yet to see another one on the roads of Sydney. Cheers

    I have quietly coveted this motorcycle for a while now. Triumph certainly knows how to design and build a motorcycle. I agree with all of the points presented in Scott's review. To me it looks like Triumph has addressed all of the weaknesses resulting from comparing it to the R9T. Smart move Triumph.

    Still one of my favourite alternatives vs. the 1250R in this roadster group (watching the vid again now - 03/22). But & have to be said: b o t h of them easily can join the middle weight nakeds ☝🏻✨💪🏻 … the torque (ok, the 143 Nm of the 1250R is absolutely fabulous!) and the sound on the Speed Twin, even or better (!) in rain mode is just pure fun. This 1200 ccm Twin can be driven slow and relaxed, or fast. Up to you, it’s fun anytime 🤩
    Still think about getting the Trident 660 as a smaller, more daily commuter, or this wonderful bigger Twin.
    Such a good job, Triumph made on both, here even the price is way better for the whole finish & style, than the companions. Thx for this (another) superb review 👍🏻👍🏻

Couldn't resist with the offer - 32% cheaper than the new speed twin. Agree the new Speed Twin is a niche higher within it's class👌🏼

    I was very convinced that I wanted the r9t but now with the new updates to the Speed twin, that choice just became very hard! Although there are things that the r9t lacks like a fuel gauge (miles left) Gear indicator, and tachometer, its the little things BMW chooses not to address for the modern riders like me who want old school looks but with all the technology. Also as someone else pointed out the suspension being lifted higher in the back for the speed twin making that downwards look, yeah I wish they hadn't done that!

    Thanks for helpful review. The chart is great but let’s please have your ranking of the bikes listed. The BMW R1250R has the option of active suspension (preload and damping) whereas it’s unclear whether Speed Twin suspension is adjustable? Also cruise control? I’m trying to decide between some of the bikes on the chart so would find ranking and rationale helpful please.

    For the moment got an 900 RS but probably move to the Speed Twin next year😉
    For the lower throttle disponibility and even if the wheight is the same, the Speed Twin is more compact and probably more flickable, nimble and fun on twisty roads😁 I think the rear tyre in 160 is a good thing and help the fun factor.

    Nice review Scott. This bike is on my short list for sure. Curious why you left off the XSR900 in your comparison. I currently have one of those, as well as the Z900RS Cafe, and both are great bikes. But damn that XSR900 is one great bike. Awesome triple that performs and sounds great, and it;s lighter than the Kawi by about 40 lbs and has better brakes. The XSR should definitely be cross shopped with these Speed Twins. Speed Twin is way nicer looking, but the XSR can be made to look very nice with just a few aftermarket tweeks.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  2 года назад

      Thank you. There are many reasons as to why and why not a bike makes it onto the list and not, the XSR was one of those bikes that could have gone either way. 847cc, lowest in torque & in weight by far, so it's really a middleweight retro bike and does not punch with these heavyweights. It was a stretch to put the Z900RS on the list even though it is a middleweight but it is 101cc bigger, 20kg heavier and has 12Nm more torque than the XSR, so it made it (barely) on the list, also because I wanted at least 1 Japanese bike on the chart (diversity 😒).
      take care,
      Scott
      P.S. Maybe I should take off the Z900RS and put on the CB1000R, then there'd be no middleweights on the heavyweight chart 😁 but then guys would argue that it's a naked bike, which I'd agree...lol.

    • @johnridesadv2512
      @johnridesadv2512 2 года назад

      @@NothingToProve Sorta makes sense, but the XSR900 does fit in with this group. It certainly is a step above the XSR700, Trident, etc. so ya can't really fit it in with those smaller bikes. It might not have the torque numbers of the bikes you list in this video, but the lower weight means it will run with all of these bikes from a performance standpoint. I certainly prefer it slightly over my Z900RS in almost every category except for maybe looks. Keep up the great detailed reviews!

    Cheers

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  2 года назад +4

      The feel and overall posture of this bike has changed to no longer a laid back roadster that can do some spirited riding to an aggressive attack mode pit bull, which is typical to a naked bike and not a roadster.
      Motor: was mild but still had plenty of torque to pull out of a curve in any gear, now it just wants to spin up and go go go, faster faster faster.
      Suspension: was mild but still could do some spirited riding, now just wants to go fast in a corner.
      Brakes: were already good but now they are really good in fact, they are better than most naked bikes...which I won't complain about and like that part this gen 👍😁
      So the problem with upgrading a roadster is where do you stop with the performance and tune of the engine and I think Triumph went just a little too far with both because at a certain point the character changes and that's what happened here.
      gen 1 = Roadster
      gen 2 = Naked (that looks like a classic roadster but doesn't feel like one)
      Hence the thumb nail 😁
      The T120 is still the T120 it was before, just improved but still the classic Bonneville, still has the same character.
      ride safe,
      Scott
      edit: Yes, a noticeable difference in power and where it's at in the rev-range. T120 is much lower.

      Right now I'd take the Bonnie because I'm moving more towards a more comfortable and a more relaxed ride. Just the engine character is different, even though they are the same engine, Triumph tuned them differently and I can really feel it. The speed is more aggressive, the "let's go go go" mentality, the Bonnie is more relaxed but still has the power if you want it. And I guess as I grow older, I like to relax when I ride but still have the occasional "need for speed" and the Bonnie does that just fine for me 😁👍

    One of my few complaints is still that on/off throttle. I find it easier to keep it in Rain mode until I can get some fueling ECU flash or a booster plug. The flickability is so surprising. You still feel the weight at very low speed maneuvers but as soon as you get going, it wants to turn at the slightest suggestion. Very stable too. And the sound...

    • @trevortyson6701

      Ive just got one and unfortunately the Euro five restrictions mean no ECU flashes (anti tamper software) this means no booster plug and even aftermarket exhausts you have to use the smallest baffles, Decat is a pain as they have welded the pipes to the CAT I run mine on sport all the time but I have fitted the throttle spacer kit, seems to smooth out that snatchiness at low gears /speeds

    • @johanthorn1968

    Not sure about being blessed by Euro regs as they kill the engine smoothness at low rpm and when engaging the throttle especially in corners which upsets the balance unless you feather the clutch. I’d strongly recommend anyone thinking of buying this fantastic bike to get the previous model and fit a booster plug which you can’t do to the new model.

    • @andrewbecker3700
      @andrewbecker3700 2 года назад +1

      Not sure about a few things there boss. It's the exact same bike with better brakes, forks,wheels and tires, and
      makes more power in stock form before mods.Once modified in all the same ways as the earlier model can be, it's an even better machine. Those booster plugs are a waste of time and money, just like all the fancy expensive exhausts people think thier gaining power with. I've done around 25 mods to my '22 so far and I bet it'd dust off any older model Speed Twin with ease. Still has the stock mufflers with the baffles pulled and a cat delete x-pipe. Moving the factory temp sensor away from the exhaust will accomplish the same nothing you think that booster plug does.

    • @Cuzzazbuzz
      @Cuzzazbuzz 2 года назад

      @@andrewbecker3700 I think you’re confusing the bike with a pimped up sports bike where the only focus is the power figures. No one is interested in that since they left school. My point about the booster plug is that it make the slow speed power delivery so much smoother and therefore the bike is much easier to ride.

      @@Cuzzazbuzz Left school in late '84 to work and start a family. Been a mechanic and avid hot rodder for over 30 years. My point is exactly the essence of the term "hot rodding". Which IMHO means taking whatever you have or can afford, and making it faster and better looking for minimal outlay. Then blowing some slicksters doors off in front of all his posier buddies! Going faster for less and lookn good doing it. How each of us accomplishes that is up for debate. Some people spend tall bank on gimmick mods that do little to nothing for performance. Actually learning what makes power and what hurts it is something 85% of the slicksters out there will never grasp. It's a known fact the Speed Twin has a plenty rich fuel curve from the factory, and if you don't live at sea level, which very few of us do. Somehow tricking the ECU into adding even more fuel can only hurt power and most of all throttle response. Also, the stock mufflers are designed to work good with the factory tune throughout a wide powerband, not just W.O.T. Louder does not mean better.

    Unfortunatly the street twin looks much better than the speed twin in my opinion. I tested the speed twin and Z900RS and to be honest: I made my licence in the 1990 because of the GPZ900R. I started again because of the Z900RS. Nothing can beat a faster heartbeat. Z900RS is a keeper and still the king of retro sport bikes. Amen :-).

    The Speed Twin in Meriden days was always a 500. Supercedid in 1949 by the 650 Thunderbird.
    Even pre war the go faster bike was the Tiger 100.w
    The Speed Twin in 1937 revolutionised the British motorcycle industry as the world's first mass produced popular parallel twin. Having girder forks and a rigid frame, there is nothing similar or in common with this bike except 2 cylinders and name only.
    Edit, great review, enjoyed that.

      It`s the rear suspension that gives it that kicked up the arse look.
      The Street Twin doesn`t have this and I think it looks better for it.
      If I bought one I`d lower the rear with some shorter units.

    I don't know. Can't make up my mind about this bike from Triumph. It just seems to be nowhere in terms of what it offers. Nothing particularly good stands out. Perhaps I'm being unfair, but for me it would still be the Kawasaki Z900RS or even the BMW RNineT, but never ridden it or indeed the old Thuxton R and now RS yes, or the Speed and Street Triple, Speed Triple RS, old and new, yes, and even the Bonneville Speedmaster yes. These all seem to be quite distinct bikes in their own right that have definite characteristics some of which they do very well, that say buy me, but this Speed Twin just doesn't do anything for me. Sorry. Would there be any chance you could get hold of a Triumph Speedmaster to review Scott? I know you like cruisers and loving the look of this bike. It looks beautiful.

    Technically every bike with out fairings is a naked bike.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  2 года назад

      Ah, actually the term "naked" began about 3 decades ago with the launch of the Monster & Speed Triple & later the Aprilia Tuono (which is an stripped down RSV4) and it was more about an up-right riding position and increased performance over the standard bike. This is why today we have several "nakeds" with quarter/half fairings. The Tuono being a key example here and being one of the original "nakeds" because it is about "half faired" when it was launched back in 2002 and still today...love the Tuono btw...it's my favorite Super Naked bike. (Actually Triumph publicly claims to have created the term "naked" with the Speed Triple but Ducati strongly disagrees and Aprilia is just laughing at both of them and is making the best Super Naked today, imho. 😁)
      ride safe,

      @@NothingToProve thanks for the informative reply👍 very interesting. What about the term street fighter? I noticed the "sport nakeds" were and are being called street fighters. I like that term better. The more upright riding position with raised handle bars (not too high) instead of clip ons.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  2 года назад

      That's marketing pure and simple. It's a newer term that has come out in the last few years to up the ante so to speak because the Super Nakeds are getting so high in performance, pretty much right there with the 1000cc sport bikes. And again Ducati is using this new "marketing" term and actually calling their new Super Naked "Street Fighter" in 2020. So a few years from now Ducati will be saying that they created the "Street Fighter" term, just like they say they created the "naked" bike category we have today. 🤣🤣🤣

People say x band created/started heavy metal but actually the people started calling it such or punk rock started with x band etc etc i could go on and on about this but i just call it rock and roll with different styles. So with that being said I'll call my triumph speedmaster a naked cruiser 🤘😎
