As someone who has matched paint for years, I offer the following tips to ensure you get the best color match possible A) NEVER bring your sample to a hardware store to get a quality match. If you want quality, go to your local paint store where theY have qualified staff. IF you want quick, go to Home Depot or Lowes. B) Make sure you pull your sample from an area of the wall that best represents the color you are trying to achieve. Several factors cause paint to fade. While pulling a sample from behind an object might seem clever, remember its been hidden from sunlight and smoke and other things that can cause the color to change. Bringing in a sample that doesn't match the actual color you're trying to touch up is frustrating to you and the person who just spent time matching your sample when you come back to have the color adjusted. C) Whenever possible, bring in a sample that is at least the size of a 50 cent piece. This allows the person doing the match to put some paint directly on your sample to ensure a high quality match. Contrary to popular belief, the computerized color eye used to match paint is not always accurate and may need some tweaking. D) Unless you know for a fact what manufacturer and what product was initially utilized and go to that same company to have the match done, there is a good possibility that while the color may match perfectly, the sheen does not. You may notice the difference when the lights are on and you look at it from different angles. Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!!
Thanks for your info. For Australian users, Lowe's here is a menswear store only and Home Depot does not exist. DO take your sample to a hardware store - take it to Bunnings (Australia). All the other info sounds logical and useful 🙂
Hey Paul, maybe you can answer a question for me? We have plastic shutters that were painted with a spray paint that has been discontinued. Would like to match it with a roll/brush on paint. Can I take the shutter in to get it color matched or the cap from the empty spray can? Or a piece of door trim? Does the sample have to be thi and flat like this video shows?
The tip you showed to get the sample from behind the plastic plate saved me so much time. Thank you!! I am just doing a small touchup to my kitchen wall and the wall uses a light tan colour. The difference in shade between the paint hidden by the plate and the part exposed to the elements is not noticeable in my case.
Hey thanks a lot for this. I just moved into a place the previous tenant left a HUGE black mark on the wall and I don't want to pester the landlord about it. He gave me permission to repaint, but a color match over that spot would do the trick perfectly. This was very helpful.
This just helped me sort out a problem with a customer I did a small plaster repair with and was having trouble matching the paint. I even have a Nix colour matching sensor which quite honestly is a waste of time and money.
Short and sweet. 👏👍❤️ Great tutorial. I was confused about computer colour detection when I took a sample an was afraid to paint. Now I know the final outcome. Thanks.
BUT... if you take paint/wallboard sample from behind outlet cover, that area won't have been exposed to sunlight over the years (like the rest of wall), so it'll be different color than rest of wall!!!
I always remove the plates prior to painting rather than trying to hand cut around them typically it is only 1 or 2 short screws 4 if its a larger size. And after removing the plates I normally can find one with enough painted sacrificial pained surface for a sample for matching of color
Need to match my grout color. Are you suggesting that I remove my tile and bring my tile floor to the store and match? I guess I better start training for the lift.
PS. I realized that taking a sample from behind a wall plate wasn’t a good idea. The paint matched the sample but was lighter than the colour of the wall I needed to touch up. The reason, for this is simple: a sample taken from behind a wall plate is somewhat protected from the elements and ages differently than the paint that is on the actual wall especially if you’re trying to match a colour of paint that is at least 10+ years old. I managed to get it looking good after a lot of dry rolling and feathering the new paint to blend with old.
I have a nice white, smooth ceiling in Kitchen. Small part was water damaged. I was afraid to patch IF I couldn't match the white. Now I have more confidence. Hope it works. Anything to add for a CEILING repair?? ❓❓
I have many videos on how to repair ceilings . Also, generally ceilings are painted in ceiling white which is an off the shelf color. Depending on how old and discolored your ceiling paint is , you may have to paint the whole ceiling
Wow! Awesome video Thanks.. but I do have a question, would this option also work for Autobody paint repair? Meaning if you don’t have the code, would a paint store be able to match say a pc of the rocker molding on car if taken off n taken to that store?? Sorry for the long explanation but it’s best way I can describe it.. 💙
One problem- paint, especially darker colors, will fade when it is exposed to light for a number of year so paint samples from behind wall plates may be darker.
@@rochelleross580 I took the sample and it wasn't big enough. They wanted a 20 cent size sample. I'm taking it this weekend back to them. Finger crossed 🤞
I sure wish this was true. I've tried to color match the white paint on my apartment wall, and they can never get it right. It's off just enough that you can tell where it's been applied vs the original. 😢
@@rudysmachado5747 it certainly is... especially when you're a renter and want to paint areas that have deteriorated over time (like the corners of walls!).

Never in my life what I thought it would be interesting to see watching paint dry. 😂. That's an awesome technique to patch wall with the hot gun. 👍
This is the best video I found on matching paint.

Great tip... wish I saw this 6 months ago, it would’ve saved me $$ on sample pots

great video! thanks for sharing.👍👍👍

How bout brick plastered walls how do you take a sample for that?
Yeah I need to know this as well, did you find out best approach?

thats so smart my man.......love it
Great advice, thanks! Now I just need to know how to match the texture! (I think mine is like tall orange peel🤷🏻♂️)
water damaged walls are not texture, it needs to be fixed. lol
Thank you sir for your video it was very helpful.
You’re very welcome 👍
How do you patch up the area where you took the sample from
Iv got videos on how to do that 👍
@@billshowto which video shows how to patch? I've been trying to find with no luck
Pro Tip: Start using digital notepads like Evernote to keep photos and details of the paint code and can.

I like the fact that he’s using the knife that I’m about to use.
Good video, probably saved me my deposit
What if your wall doesn't have a paper or plasterboard covering (mine don't)? What if your wall is solid brick?
Finally the video I've been looking for! Thank you for explaining so well.
Hello,
What kind joint compound did you use to patch it?

Super helpful. Thank you
How do u do this for interior doors?
Genius, thank you!
How do I do it if it’s on a lawnmower?
Thanks as always Bill for these simple but very useful tips !
What a GENUIS. Thankuuu for ur help
👍
Have you tried the Dulux snapshot?
Do you have a video on how to patch the part of the wall where the sample was taken?
So I can simply paint over the patch? No need to buff it or use that putty stuff?
Where is your video about hot to patch the hole? I can’t find it on your page
That's incredible. These small tradies tips are amazing. Heading off to Bunnings tomorrow to get a sample of paint.
Did you get the colour matching done at bunnings in the end? How did it go?

The front of my front door is weathered, how to match to the interior part so I don’t have to repaint the entire door?
Bring door to paint store
Brilliant tip thank you

How to get a sample from double brick wall?
Can I use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun? 😅
Sure can 👍
How about if you want to match the ceiling color ?
Cut a small square out of the ceiling at a corner.
great tip man. thanks
thank you , good idea
Thanks so much. I buggered my wall mucking around with colour samples 🤦🏻♂️
Just fyi, home depot is awful at paint matching. Tried em 2x and not close either time

Aloha,so why not remove the sample from behind one of those face plates
that way you can cover that area with the face plate?
Not enough room behind the face plates,. also if the house has been repainted, they may not have painted behind the covers👍
A fellow Bill I see
Good job

Which color was that? I think that is what I am looking for 😄
Oh, nice thanks 😄

Not a good idea to take paint from behind a switch plate as the wall colour may be faded compared to what it is behind tge switch plates
Thanks bud!
Found your channel today Bill, your a legend mate! Binge watching all the mad content !
Nice
Write the name of the paint on the back of the face plate along with store name + shine and matte etc etc
Thanks Bill

What is this "paper". I must be missing something, mine just crumbles up as soon as I try to peel it off. No paper in sight.
You must not have plasterboard walls. They may be plastered walls
Thank you!
