Honk out to my fellow Canadian! You forgot to mention that Flotrol is amazing to help wash your paint brushes. It really breaks down the dried paint on the bristles and
kind of works as a Paint Brush hair conditioner. Brushes are restored to almost new!
Love my Flotrol!!!
Right... 2.5" Slanted paintbrush. Was just checking to make sure I was going to use the right sized brush.
Thanks son!
First tool for baseboard work is knee pads, 2nd tool is headband flashlight. Love these videos.
As someone currently starting the baseboard journey, I concur. I used a thick fluffy towel but it kept throwing my balance off.
I have bad knees but trying to get my skirting boards painted before I run London Marathon next weekend as my cousin is coming to stay then.
i used my auto creeper and longboard skateboard. i returned my knee pads because they were uncomfortable at the straps- tactical pants with knee pads are better imo.
Been painting for 40+ yrs, Navy guy and 2 rebuilt houses. Never heard of this stuff, can't want to try it! Thanks much

Boom- that’s awesome!

Haha same here 😂
Me too!
Thanks for the tips! Freshly repaired and painted baseboards make ALL the difference!
Discovered your videos today and I’m impressed! I’ve been doing my own home projects since the 1990s - so please consider it a compliment Sir.
Just bought a house and the trim is in need of some love. I could not be more excited to get in there and make them look fresh. Great videos! They really get me excited about home improvement.
Great tips. Glad to see i already did most of them. I will add that if you have to come behind a sloppy contractor job like most new houses hear in Texas, after the first sanding prime with oil based kiltz. Then lightly sand again. Then top coat just as you said.
One extra tip is to use some paintable caulk on corner gaps and the top of the baseboard if its not been done, the finish looks more professional this way. (As a painter I still see lots of houses where this has never been done) Also my advice is that trim/base is the place to splurge on the most expensive paints - it covers better, has a nicer finish, and reduces the need for more coats while giving the best washability/durability. Unless you are a little more skilled, avoid waterborne alkyd paints.
Can you explain what you mean on the top of the baseboard? so not just in between the baseboard in the wall?
if I already have waterborne alkyd paint, any tips how to apply it well ?
@@yevgenikovelman3306 keep a wet edge and use multiple light coats. I'm good with a brush but far from a professional and didn't have any issues with waterborne alkyd. You don't need floetrol in these because they already have long dry times. (Also, floetrol isn't recommended in alkyd paint.)
Great stuff! I recommend cleaning the area, trim and floor BEFORE taping off. And remember to pull the tape before the paint dries, otherwise the tape gets glued to the surface!
If you pull the tape before drying after the first coat, does this mean you are taping twice?
@@dreid4760 No, you can paint a second coat within an hour or even a few hours and the paint will be dry to the touch, but has not fully hardened. just remove the tape within a couple of hours of completing the second coat. I usually finish up, wait about 15 -20 minutes and pull the tape. Also, pull the tape off at a steep angle, so the tape rolls over itself as you pull it off, you get a better edge this way. Do not just pull the tape directly away from the surface.
Thanks for the clarification!

Awesome video! Our home has the old style stained/varnished wood. But it was built in 1983 so it’s not the richer stuff from earlier days! I’m 60 now, but back when I was 20 I worked with a professional painter. He could lay out paint without tape. Really incredible work. He called it fluid line painting. He also told us that we were to load the brush and not swipe the edge of the can!
Well my hands aren’t as steady anymore, so I’ll go with the tape. Also thanks for the reminder about TSP.
Bob Ross thing was so funny
So what I needed. Woke up to the worst dream, unrelated to painting of course, and this brought my day back and am ready to paint 😃 Subscribed
i literally laughed out loud
And so hilariously unexpected
Sad that they stole all his art from his family
He’s so funny I bet his wife has daydreams of hitting him with a pan.
LOL! 😆 the beginning I thought I had the wrong video! Good one. I moved into a condo and the whole place needs to be painted. I have the baseboard, crown molding and cabinets and door frames left to paint. I’m too lazy to tape it off so I am taking my time and just doing one wall a day unless I want to do more...I dont want to overwhelm myself. LOL! 😆
That’s a great approach to do small sections, I do the same.
One of the perks to this pandemic is we have a ton of free time on our hands for DIY projects around the house! And since no one is coming over anytime soon, there's no pressure to finish the project immediately, so we are able to work at our own pace!
Wow, the timing couldn't have been more perfect. I have new tile and baseboards going in and I was wondering how I was going to paint the baseboards. The trick on how to remove FrogTape is one of the little gems that I look for when watching videos like this. Great little video.
Best wishes on the painting!
Yeah I learned a lot from this video & timing was perfecto! Thank you - Subscribed!
Yes! Floetrol has changed my life. Started adding it for big trim areas - you want the paint still workable once you paint a big area and get back around to the “beginning”.
Thanks for your help, will be following both recommended videos 😊
1:35 - thank you. Came for the Bob Ross impression, subbed for the tips.
One added tip for removing the painter's tape to help prevent peeling the paint. Take a utility knife with a sharp blade and run it along the edge of the painted piece and the tape. Doesn't take much pressure, just the weight of the knife will work the majority of the time. It will help give a nice crisp edge and prevent the tape from pulling the paint off the piece you just painted. Also helps to keep the tape from tearing in the event you got too much paint on the tape.
Good tip
Pull the tape while paint is still wet lol
@@titirititiri6360 Agree. This works best.
@@titirititiri6360 most paints and surfaces require more than one two coats even expensive paints requires multiple coats. In a perfect world yeah one coat and one brush swipe and rip the tape off.
@@derpherpp they come primed ,first coat is sprayed on outside, after install, caulk and Brad nails are filled, the final coat gets sprayed, tape gets pulled immediately. Now it’s a perfect world

Love the rooster brushes. Thanks for the floetrol tip. I will definitely use it next time. I find that the special door and trim paint with the polymer additive usually flows better than plain latex paint
Yeh, most folks say Wooster like Rooster. Growing up in Wooster, it's pronounced like Wuster or same as Worchester, Ma.
@@rongrande4177 If you want to cut in like a pro (or maybe better than some "pros") buy a Wooster "Shortcut" stubby paint brush. Worth its weight in gold!
@The Funny Carpenter. Thanks for the tip about Floetrol. I'll have to give it a try for those times I really need and don't want brush marks. I've seen so many bad paint jobs where the painter (homeowner) had no concept of paint leveling. The brush marks and paint drips (didn't pull nails off the wall) are so bad that no amount of sanding will get them out. Had to skim coat over and at least the roller naps I use for painting leave a much better finish.
Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
Thanks mate! Ya it’s disheartening when you have to paint over crap that’s 3-4 layers deep of bad paint jobs.
Spray it!!!! Throw those brush and rollers away. It’s faster and perfectly flat to spray, dam DIYers always being cheap A$$’s
This was a great way to get the day started with a chuckle. Will for sure look for the additive next time we need to paint.
Floetrol is amazing. I did one small part without and then added it. Game changer ❤
THANK YOU! I painted my first two baseboards and they looked terrible (brush marks). The Floetrol tip saved me, and the results were great!
That’s awesome Rick!
Awesome, I'm painting my daughter's bedroom baseboard this weekend.
Best wishes on the paint job!
I’m taking a break right now as I’m painting my bedroom. I’ve seen several videos on painting and the one thing I read over and over is to buy a good brush. I was guilty of purchasing cheap brushes in the past, but this time I got good ones. I can’t believe the difference! The paint went where I wanted it to go and not on the ceiling or baseboards. I’ll never buy cheap brushes again. After taking off the tape the wrong way, I now have to touch up in areas where the paint came off. Lesson learned! Thanks for the info. After getting the liquid stuff you mentioned, I’ll start my baseboards. 😊🙏🏼🌷
Great tips on the Floetrol. And man, if anyone is spending $2 on a paint brush at the $1 store, they’re getting ripped off DOUBLE!
I've always recommend Floetrol to the customers, if I don't have any with me. I've discovered that it works well for cut-ins, as it leaves next to no holidays after the first coat. Great video btw, and you have a new subscriber. Hope you're staying busy, and hope that you're enjoying your day.
~Joe ✌😎
I use Floetrol as an additive for cabinet paint as well. Like you said, smooths out really well. Thanks for the video.
Thanks buddy
Excellent information.
I used to work for a stucco and plaster company.
We had to cover everything unless it was dirt on the ground.
Many times due to bosses telling us to hurry up. We had to pull tape while the material was wet.
The finish is the thickness of the aggregate.
When we pulled tape.
We would start at one end and get a couple of inches free.
Grab the inside corner and fold it back forming and angle and pull the edge at an angle.
There is only one point of release right at the bend.
This way the finish wont pull off.
I learned it this way and it works for me.
This works on texture also.
I've never fiddled with paint additives.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks! I'm really impressed with the tips and tricks that make my DIY life easier!
Thank you🍻
Love the Bob Ross.....happy little base boards....singing little frog tapes

I love frog tape too. Saves so much time. Cheers I had wondered what floetrol was after seeing it recently. My tip for brush cleaning...wash with washing powder, also great for removing paint off the brush handle softens the bristles back to new. I hang mine off a hook to dry so the bristles stay straight.
I'm guessing you're British, so can you tell me... is "washing powder" the same thing as dish soap or laundry soap? Thanks!
I've heard of adding flowtrol to improve flow in spray guns but never thought about using it for just brushing or rolling it! That one tip was worth the watch by itself, thanks man!

Thank you for advice, great video...
Your videos are so helpful! Truly appreciate them!
Use a 12” taping knife to keep from painting the floor or wall as you go. 1/10 the time of tape, same result so long as you’re not overloading your brush. Keep a wet rag in case of mistakes and to wipe the edge of the knife every so often.
That's fine for skilled painters, but he's trying to teach casuals.
Just painted 700’ of 4” with my 12” knife works much better and you don’t need to be “more skilled” all it takes is attention to detail
@@thekey999 I disagree as if you don't wipe the 12" knife off with every move you will get paint on the floor. Faster after you tape.
That was Purdy...I mean...woo-hoo Wooster that paint looks good.

Floetrol works great! I use Penetrol for oil based paint. A little Penetrol is ok in varnish too - it can save you during hot or windy conditions when outdoors. Steve J.
Ive found that with floetrol is if you dont use enough it does no good. If you store your paint and come back you likely need more Floetrol. It doesnt seem to hold up in the can for long periods of time.

Bob Ross impression lol
Aaww Bob Ross (Rip) great video- thanks for sharing. My home is 17 yrs old now and my base boards are looking ruff.
Very helpful video, everything was explained so well!
On the floor I like to use a thin piece of cardboard that has a slick side, like from a cereal box. The material is plenty wide and can be stuffed under most baseboards.
Good tip
I use a thin,flexible plastic placemat
@@TheFunnyCarpenter actually very soon somewhere on his cardboard slider, he will get a buildup of paint that will eventually find it way on the floor. So your taping is a professional approach thats foolproof. Also bringing the tape from the floor about a 16th of and inch or less up the baseboard will never be seen and create a barrier so the paint wont seep under tape and make its way to the floor. Unless you can slide the taping
under the baseboard as some baseboards are slightly raised above a hardwood floor if they were done right. Doing it this way, you have to tear tape into about 18 inch pieces at a time to place under baseboards, but its worth the extra time to keep paint from getting dried onto the floor from seepage.
Dollar store posterboard (2/$1) works too - or I go on the roadsides after election day and collect the signs -- the laminated paper signs that fold over a "U" shaped metal stand work best -- and slide right up. (Or they can be used on the other side with permanent marker for cheap and LARGE yard sale signs.)
@@TheSkydiva67 that's the way I use it too!
Another tip. I've got burned by this many times. Depending on the tape used, run a utility knife blade where the tape meets the baseboard top if it's on the wall. Will prevent paint from peeling off.
Also, the frog tape is water activated I believe even though the package doesn't specify (people argue with me about this all the time.) When the tape is first put on, get a wet rag and run along the tape, which will help the tape adhere to the surface. Also, prior to putting the tape on (I think this was in the video) ensure all surfaces are clean, I like to get rubbing alcohol on a rag, wipe down the wall and the baseboard (wall where you will be taping) let dry, then install the tape, then run a wet rag over the tape.
Even if the water on the rag/tape does nothing, it makes you feel better.
Great info!
Thanks this has been on my honey to do list.

The deep V is an under-utilized fashion statement...
Nice job on the video; you almost had me thinking the intro was an old Bob Ross commercial. And your choices in prep, paint, brushes, and 2nd coating is right up my alley. I might consider one of your tee shirts... But at the risk of provoking a flurry of reply advice, I'll share a couple more tips I find useful: 1) Avoid MDF in traffic areas if you can afford it. I've had to perform way too many repairs as the material chips away with the slightest touch. The shoe molding should be wood to avoid vacuum or dust mop damage. 2) If you've got a room full of trim, I like to spread the paint with a 4" roller, then brush it out. It speeds things up and reduces dry spots. Floetrol is a great go-to in achieving that "brushless" final finish. Thanks again!
Great info! Just in time for my baseboard job- thanks!
best wishes on the job!
Haha great tips. Painters on site always bullied me for not cutting in but this gave me some validation.
Thanks Carlo. They're ain't no shame in doing a nice job!
I can cut in with either hand, but taping made the job easier and faster, especially with primer and multiple coats.
I like the 2 inch angled brush not gonna lie, but hey literally different strokes for different folks.😂
Like the Bob Ross intro too.
If it ain't broke....Thank you
Wow that was 2 great videos. Thank you very much. I learned something new.
Appreciate the link for your Canadian audience. Subscribed and liked.
This has probably been said before, but if you put masking tape down roughly before installing the skirting / base boards, it's super quick and cuts back nicely after painting. With the tape running under the skirting it saves a lot of time.
How have I made it to 62, painted a LOT of rooms and never heard of Floetrol?! That seems like a game changer! Thanks for sharing this tip!
Control works great. For one is adding a half pint to a gallon if the paint is thick and you can use your gallon without thinning with water. Flowtrol will slow dry your paint when using outside when your surface is a little to warm. Latex paint only.
The wooster silver tip brush is one of the best I have found for painting trim
Thank you thank you thank you, great ideas and tips
I bought floetrol because of this video. I was really glad I bought it, I've painted more rooms than I can count and man, this really helped the paint go on the wall WAY smoother. Thanks for the tips! I am listing my home soon and have a few dumb things to repair before we get pics taken. I have watched all your vids on repair on your channel. I even just regrouted my kitchen! Boom;
My bedroom wall has chair rail on it, and my one wall is very wavy. In some places, the chair rail meets the wall and on other spots, the chair rail is almost 3/4" away from the wall!!! Omg I don't have any fancy nailers, air compressor, and my little baby stapler is no use for this application. Any suggestions on what to do when baseboard or chair rail has a significant gap like that without straight up repairing the wall (which I am not doing!) Lol
Is there any way you can use an instant setting glue, like a 2P10 or even a glue and then clamp the rail back into place? Or depending on the profile if there is a decent flat spot you can try use a trim head screw to suck it back into the wall. Let me know how you make out!
I'm sure this comment is coming much too late, but you don't need a brad nailer. You can just use 3d or 4d finish nails and a hammer. Use a nail pusher to push the nail even farther in then fill it over with wood putty before repainting. I've been upgrading my baseboards this way and it honestly only takes about 5 minutes longer per room versus a nail gun.
Thank you great tips. You must have known I was getting my baseboards ready to paint.👍

Wonderful, so appreciate your information.
Floetrol and Frog tape... two really great products I've used for years. Both are worth every penny. Frog tape is better than any of the other trim tapes, including 3M's blue. For patching dings in wood I think the best product is MH Ready Patch. Hardens like wood, does not shrink or crack, and sands out really well. You'll find it mostly at smaller hardware and paint stores, and Amazon does carry it.
I grabbed some of that ready patch, a while back. I haven’t used it yet but will be trying it out shortly!
Durabond and regular old masking tape are tried and true for old school painters...
We love you Bob!
Funny!! Just came across you.....well impressed
Love those Silver Tips, well worth their weight in Gold. Purdy's are nice too. My old boss was so anal about baseboards and me teaching the teachers who would come paint during the summer with all the waves and repainting that I hated to do again; going over their work over and over and over. Especially Inside Work, imagine having to sand walls because they have roller marks because they did the work for the roller and pushed the paint out the sides. Painting is a Art interior and exterior. It is very rare that I use tape and using a leveling agent is the way to go even if you have been painting for years. It looks so much cleaner.
Great points Vincent, thanks for taking the time to comment:)
So you dont use tape over the trim to make a straight line?
@@caezarlapuc8627 no, I don't use tape except for cabinets. Steady Hands is all you need and a good brush. The right brush for the right application and paint. No!
@@vincentfuria7301 I can do a much faster job with tape than an steady hand. The walls sometimes are not fully straight so if you try to follow a free hand line, you will ended with that curve.
@@vincentfuria7301 I take that back. A steady hand does better on a bad drywall work.
My boyfriend and I quote the intro to this video to each other nearly everyday :D
That is awesome! I’ve made it😂
Your videos and delivery are great.
Excellent video, thanks.
Great video for us amateur decorators 👍that Frogtape is the greatest invention ever for the 99% of us that can't paint straight lines 😬
I can cut in fairly well, I just find it stressful and painful on the knees to do it on baseboards.
We have several rental properties. I have found it much easier for more frequent repainting than the average homeowner to:
1. Remove the baseboard and quarter round if present.
2. Remove or break off the nails (usually bending with pliers works or use nippers)
3. Now you can take them outside and give them a good prepping.
4. Spray or hand paint whichever you prefer.
5. HERE IS THE SUGGESTION!!
screw them back on to sill plate and/or studs which you can now easily find. You can use white screws for white baseboard etc. On some baseboard you can even recess the screws and cover with plugs .
If there is quarter round basically permanently attach it to the baseboard by using small screws from behind and predrill holes for the screws.
IF THE BASEBOARDS ARE VERY SHORT SAY 2 1/2 TO 3 INCHES consider replacing all of them to make the next step easier but you definitely dont have to especially since thats a lot of work.
NOW WHEN YOU NEED TO REPAINT just unscrew the baseboard take it out and paint on sawhorses and leave it off till you now EASILY PAINT THE WALLS WITH ROLLER WITHOUT CUTTING IN SINCE IT WILL BE COVERED WHEN YOU SCREW THE BASEBOARD BACK ON !!!
another suggestion : If you choose to do this write on back of baseboard where it goes.
Even the first time when you remove the baseboard it isn't much more trouble than all the taping etc and now you will have a better looking precise paint job and MUCH quicker cheaper and easier in the future!!!
BTW IF YOU REALLY WANT TO DO IT FAST YOU CAN ADD CEILING MOLDING TOO OR MODIFY IT. This will also add appeal and value to the home !!
Was looking for a Canadian channel and I think I found the best one!
Thank you for your advice.
You're welcome Gloria, Thanks for checking out the video
