Every situation is different but one thing I always like to do is caulk prior to any painting where ever any two colors meet (ceiling to wall, door jam to wall, base board to wall, regardless if there is a visible crack or not and especially where ceiling meets the wall in a textured room. (assuming a color is going on the wall) In fact, I wont cut in a room until this step is performed. You don't need much caulking ("16th of an inch), just enough to fill in the irregular dips and valleys in the texture, this will give you just enough of a smooth surface that your cut in will always come out looking sweet as cherry pie! And I like to paint the base last because tape doesn't stick well to freshly painted surfaces but I paint the door jam to wall edge first because it's easier to cut in the wall to door jam than the other way around.
My god I didn’t even think of caulking… I blew out a trim in the bathroom in a few spots. I will go back and caulk where it meets the wall and paint again. Thank you!

Nice to see old-school artistry. This is how paint was done for CENTURIES, i.e., by people with skills. Anyone can tape and slop it on, but it takes a real craftsman with a cultured hand to paint straight and clean. Three cheers!

You also need knowledge which if often the missing ingredient seeing how you don't require any certification to be considered a "professional". I'll be doing lots more videos soon where I'll be talking more about colors and things painters need to know about paint in order to solve and prevent paint problems.
I'm not a painter but have been doing up a house. One of the things that I think is good advice is use a good quality 12'' double arm roller and good quality brushes. This was advice I was given and the difference in ease of use is amazing.
Another way would be to paint the baseboards first then mask up the top edge to prevent any drops from landing on them, then when you want to paint walls you can cut the walls into the baseboards which for me is much easier then cutting the baseboards into the walls but like you said in your video "this is just one way" good tutorial :) greetings from a fellow painter in australia!
At my company our painters don’t use tape for anything painting related unless they’re spraying. One day I masked off the floor to paint base boards and received a lot of crap from the painters 😂 they don’t believe any pro painters should use masking tape because it looks unprofessional and wastes time that could be used to paint over time taping off.

Interesting... While I agree that Wooster and Purdy manufacture excellent brushes, they are not the only "good" brushes on the market. The brush I use is a Nour Nature's Palette 2.5 inch sash which is worth aprox $15 depending on where you purchase it. (But not at a Dollar Store) But I especially find it interesting that you somehow felt the need to comment on my speed. I'm not saying I would win a speed contest... but is this really what separates the great painters from the not so great?
For those without these steady handed skills, the secret is using tape and PAINTABLE CLEAR CAULK. The real secret is the PAINTABLE CLEAR CAULK. What you do is use inexpensive Scotch brand 2020 masking tape (this is the cheaper yellow tape, but you'll not be letting it stick on long enough to be a problem and Scotch's brand is what the Pros use. What you do is mask off a perfect straight line at the bottom edge of the wall where the baseboard begins. Make sure to smooth it down along the edge near the baseboard. Now here's the trick: using a caulk gun, squeeze out a VERY THIN line of caulk right on that line where the tape meets the baseboard. Now take your finger and smooth the caulk down to be as thin as a coat of paint and spread so that it gets up OVER the edge of the tape ONTO the tape, and of course onto the baseboard side also. What you're doing is creating a PERFECT SEAL where it will be IMPOSSIBLE FOR PAINT TO SEEP UNDER THE TAPE and create a jagged edge of contrasting paint color (e.g. white trim on a blue wall). This is essentially a FOOL PROOF alternative to the more expensive tapes like FROG TAPE (the green tape)... Now, immediately paint your baseboard BEFORE THE CAULK DRIES, and IMMEDIATELY pull the tape to reveal your perfect line. Because the caulk is thicker in consistency than the paint (remember to keep your brush wet, we're not trying to drag a single brush load of paint stretched out overly far down the trim -- watch how he did it, note that he kept his brush pretty wet, just below the point of putting on so much that the paint would run - but because the caulk is thicker than the paint, you'll smoothly paint right over the wet caulk and when you pull your tape you will have a perfect line no freehand painter could ever match. And because the caulk is CLEAR, any miniscule amount that would seep under the tape will show through to the wall color and not be detectable. Remember: It MUST be paintable clear caulk. You MUST work quickly in a small area and squeeze out the caulk, wipe it down and paint fast enough to pull the tape before anything dries. In a typical bedroom that would likely mean doing all the baseboard in one pass, then the door trim in a second pass and then the closet trim in a third pass. Use this technique anywhere you want an absolutely foolproof perfectly straight line such as at countertop backsplashes meeting the wall, kitchen cabinets meeting the wall, door trim, vinyl windows meeting the wall, etc. etc. Also, if you're covering some sloppy prior overpainting where they used tape and it periodically bled through to make that dreaded jagged edge, you can often just set your new tape back enough to get a new clean line using this method which will let you completely cover that jagged edge, even if that means going 1/8" out onto the vinyl window (for example). People will notice a jagged line, WAY before they'll notice a perfectly straight line that's not exactly at the transition of say, window to wall... Happy painting!
so unnecessary. frog tape is ok but not worth the money. i use blue tape when i need it. i just paint all trim with no tape. this guy is an ok get by painter. been painting for 18 years. he's little sloppy in my opinion. got paint on the floor bout foot down on quarter rail where he started. top edge was a little wavy. sorry I'm just picky like that. my shit is straight. yes some basboards isn't that great of shape but this base I've seen here looks not bad.
no, the real secret is using the right brush. that said, I like to dip my cat in paint and use him as a brush. it doesn't work very well as far as painting goes, but it sure is fun, even if the cat doesn't think so.
I always hit all the trim before the walls, you can go faster, let the trim paint make it onto the wall so it fills the corner formed where they meet, then just cut the lines in with the wall color, i find it about a million times easier, the small little droplets are usually easily went over, or after cutting in the wall color, I might let it dry completely and then butt the drop up against the wall so its cover ing the trim for the most part, and roll it out
I was taught this way and still do all trim first when possible.. Well, ceiling first of course. ... Always keep a wet rag too and anticipate a once through at the end for touch ups 🙏
The best brush that I've found for doing this is the 3" straight Purdy Nylox 100% dyed nylon with the small round handle. You may have to ask at your Sherrwin Williams store. The ones around me you have to ask for them cause they keep them in the back. Anyways, They may not last over the years, but they are great for cutting in base and painting trim and casings, windows, etc.
I like the idea of being open to various approaches depending of the job at hand. :) Most of the jobs I do end up having the trims & ceilings stay the same color which means 1 coat is usually what's required. I simply showed my approach here to help people who might be doing the same type of job as me. But there are many "right" ways of doing things :)
Of course :) Regarding painting the baseboards first... I personally find it much more difficult to do the cutting in from the wall near the baseboards especially on older baseboards where the corner might not be as square because of all the paint layers. This makes it harder for the bristles to nestle into the corner and stay there. By painting the baseboards last, you end up painting to top of the rounded corner creating the illusion of a straight line. Email me if you want to know more :)
I only do this sometimes. The other alternative is to paint trim first two coats. Then let dry. Use frog tape and run the whole top of the baseboard. Cut twice with wall paint. Roll out your walls. Then peel. You’ll have an amazing wall cut and the trim will look mint.
Just started working for my dad and he has over 35 years of commercial and residential painting and for my 3rd week of painting ever he put me on base this exact method on a multimillion dollar house and I fucking hate it haha. I had to do the caulking, cut in the wall then the trim and I just pray it's good enough. Don't have enough experience to know what will suffice as an end product.
clean ur trim get a good brush and good paint. slow and steady pressure are the keys. I highly prefer an angled brush but that is just me. I like the wooster brushes at home depot and prefer them over purdys. 15 dollar brushes are worth it. learn to clean them.
I could get a thousand dollar self priming brush made with bristles of davinci’s beard hairs crafted by monks from the secret village of sherwood williams forrest and blessed by jesus himself and practice for a solid year and id still suddenly fart, twitch and put a big ole schplaow on the floor or wall... then like every time i do, try to wipe it off and make it 5 times bigger andin doing so somehow wipe off some fresh paint from the trim then track it through the entire house, carpets and all... simple three stooges or mr bean sequence.

exactly Carlos Joel Garcia,.. Totally agree with you.. I am trying to paint my kitchen now. I have NINE huge windows (floor to ceiling) and lots of trim. I am 60 with bad eyes. I wish I could do his technique. What I am having to do is lay on the floor on my side with my eyes 3-4" from the baseboard and use a 1/4" brush to get my line straight. All those complainers need to quit complaining. This is a great video.. He is able to paint with his face several feet away. ah, the days of good eyes!! I've been painting for over 20yrs. Never really cared less about angled brushes. But your videos convinced me to try. I only use angle brushes now. I also paint frames before walls now . Because of trim paint being water-based now,most of the time. You don't get the flashing caused by oil based . Great vids and great pro 👍🏻
First thing I do is ask customers to clear the room of everything. I can do it but I charge a fee for that. Once room is clear I spackle all holes, fix cracks with tape and quick 20 minute mud ect. I then lightly sand all walls to get rid of buggers ect with a 180 grit sanding screen and pole. I then wash walls and trim with TSP no rinse formula. I then caulk all trim and tape off carpet under baseboards. Let dry with fan for a few hours as I continue to add spackle to nail holes and lightly sand spackle and mud over cracks and tape until wall is smooth. I
I definitely have to use tape and scrape the brush. Thanks for the tips. I'm painting my baseboards myself today. How do you not get any paint dropping on the hardwood. That's some serious skill technique.
If you have a good brush, you can be very accurate. I dont tape off floors. It takes more time and it's not necessary, and tape may prevent you from getting to the bottom edge. Even if you get a small bit of paint on the floor, just wipe it with wet rag. The only time i would use tape on the floor is if there is a wall-to-wall carpet.

I' agree with u about paint ceiling first, than walls and I do last trim and doors..but I can do better lines and rarely touch the floor if I do I clean it fast.. U do good job bcz I watched ur videos.. But I think u are using bad brush that's why ur lines are not really good

My name is David from Topeka Kansas. I own a small painting company and I have a few tips for painting trim and walls on repaints. As we all know new construction painting is a lot easier than repaints of existing homes both interior and exterior. Fact is new construction saves 80% of their time by not having to mask anything off and therefore they can get by with using paint sprayers. This is not possible in existing homes whether people live in them or not. So lets to get to the tip I have for painting a room with walls and white baseboards. These are my tips in how I make a wall look flat, smooth and perfect crisp lines between wall and baseboards.
Those droplets are actually drywall compound from when the repairs were done (which were cleaned at the end)... regardless, I'm sorry to disappoint you :)
I love that you watched my other videos :) But if you look at this video again, you'll notice that I actually do a quick 2 strokes right at the beginning to empty the top of my bristles. Having said this, there are a few instances where I use other techniques depending on the condition of the trims. This was an older house and I do have other tricks to create the illusion of a straight line when the joint of the baseboard/wall might not be straight with dents or heavy caulking :)
Thanks for the video! I found it because I needed to touch up some door trim yesterday. On the first one I used masking tape, but after that I used your technique. I'll never go back to the masking tape! I haven't mastered your brush slapping technique yet, but I'll keep practicing!

This is actually a video series and so the walls had just recently been painted with the knowledge that the baseboards would be painted last. So yes, the top of the baseboards needed to be painted in this case because there was a bit of paint touching it from when I painted the walls. And regarding me being a pro or not... I'm actually a Licensed Painter & Decorator (Red Seal Certificate). Very few painters get this certification because it is unfortunately not required... at least not here.
In the uk 🇬🇧 we do ceilings walls then woodwork last. You save time and money on masking the skirting boards up that way. Just saying! Been a decorator 30 years in the uk 👍
I agree, but limited taping for me, I only tape off the horizontals that may get paint on them from rolling spatter or drips, seems before I was taping forever and even then sometimes the areas I taped vertically did not work out as well as I hoped. cheers
@@stringsgb8833 No, this is the most commonly accepted method for order of operations: (1) paint all trim first, then (2) ceiling, then (3) walls. It's easier to tape off smooth trim than rough walls. Without taping off, you're not going to get super sharp lines, but it's more costly to spend money on expensive tape like Frog tape, so some painters prefer to freehand it at the end so they don't have to mask things off.

Hey.. K for one base board are ment to be cut in last.. Painting is an illusion no ones line are perfect.. Cause no walls are perfect.. U make the illusion that its straight.. That another reason to why u paint base board last because u look at a down ward view of the base board.. Same with butt joint people will stay down with their cut.. But when u look in a Three-dimensional view around the room u can see their lines going up and down.. You ride the cove up.. the cove that the flusher makes from the drywall to give the illusion your lines are perfect from all angles.. Aswell these people that say the top of base board shouldn't be painted are on crack.. For one caulking HAS TO BE PAINTED OR IT TURNS YELLOW.. So yes it does have to be painted.. U did a decent job.. U forgot ur quarter round 45 but hey every true painter makes a mistake some times.. Aswell love that u said RED SEAL TICKET.. No one know about that.. Cause like u said it is not made to have to be a painter.. 6000 hours etc.. And ur exam I'm a red seal ticket painter aswell.. One thing may I add alot of people I see don't even know about this.. When rolling.. People use their cages WRONG.. The open end of ur cage should always be facing away from the direction ur painting.. If u look when a roller is put on a wall more Pressure is put to the one side and the open side actually Feathers out ur lines.. Aswell as light, flashing etc.. People think its so easy to roll their more to it then people think.. This is my 2 cents.. With 11 years painting experience..
I paint the return on jambs, windows and the top of baseboards first, (when I do accent walls) mask the top of baseboard with blue painters tape, it gives you a super straight line. 👍
After a couple of days I return and tape off the tops of my baseboards, door trim and window trim with yellow frog tape. 3 inch size to keep splatters away from trim ect. I cutin my ceiling and wall lines. I cutin my corners. I THEN TAKE MY WHITE TRIM PAINT AND USE A DRY BRUSH WITH SLIGHT AMOUNT OF WHITE TRIM PAINT AND GO OVER MY FROG TAPE ALONG THE EDGES OF MY TRIM. THIS WILL SEAL THE TAPE WITH THE WHITE TRIM PAINT SO WHEN YOU CUTIN LATER WITH THE WALL PAINT YOU WILL HAVE NO BLEED THRU AND YOUR WHITE TRIM LINE WILL BE AS CRISP AS A RAZOR. As soon as I apply the white paint over top of tape in a thin coat I let it dry for about 15 minutes and then apply a coat of paint over the top of the tape on the baseboard. I then roll out the walls. As soon as I am done I remove the tape and wallah!!...the perrfect razor sharp lines you will ever see..... give it a try....

There is a much simpler way of painting your baseboards with a great effect. If you don't want to mess up the floor, just use the wide patching knife and set it against, or under the shoe molding. You will have to sometimes use the force to push it underneath, and clean the knife from the paint but the result is great. As for the part between the wall and baseboard - I use a good quality brush (Purdy ClearCut 3") and my own "surgeon" hand, but you can always use masking tape.
I was taught to do the baseboard before the walls because it was easier to cut-in the top of the trim when doing the cut-in on the wall for me . I usually did the ceiling lines because I was tall and the guy I worked for was short so he did the baseboards. One day he made fun of tall people and I told him at least when I painted baseboards I didn't need a step ladder! I like your attitude towards people's remarks. To those who think painting walls doesn't have to be perfect and that straight lines are just an illusion. The problem with thinking that nothing is perfect makes things look really bad at the end. The goal should be to make it the best it could be. Yes there's going to be some variability, but if frame is is 1/4 off and drywall is 1/4 off and baseboards are 1/4 off and paint lines are just an illusion then you end up with a very bad looking room. People don't look at baseboards from the top. They look at from different sides. Also painting over the floor is not acceptable. I'm currently battling badly painted baseboards, multiple layers of paint, some drips, and dust painted over. I don't even know how to clean it before painting. Apparently all the pros who were painting were thinking that it's okay if things aren't perfect. No it's not okay, anyone with good vision who values aesthetics would be horrified.
Too many decorators quote cheap then are forced to do the job quickly in order to make a profit - in which case they do not perform the job as well as it should be done if they can do it well at all. I think this man is a DIYer though so I can understand the mistakes, he doesn't look very comfortable with the brush. Chemical stripping would be your best bet. If it's an older house it'll also reduce risk from any lead paint shavings/dust in the air.
Tip#1: First, be a professional painter with a super-steady hand, so you don't need any other special tips on how to cut in a straight line, how to keep paint off the walls and floors, how to fix it when your brush goes off course a little, how to get the paint right down next to the floor if you have to do a color change, etc., because THIS VIDEO DOESN'T HAVE ANY. But it is nice watching this guy paint - he's really good at it.
I personally like taking baseboards off then paint em this way I can spray them with primer then spray paint them therefore tbere is no sign of brush strokes.
Remember there's a difference between a pro and an expert. An expert pro is what you want, and you'll have to pay. There are pros everywhere, and the experts make a fortune cleaning up their messes.

+KCImages He did that on purpose. That's proper technique. You need to make a choice, either paint slightly (like, 1/16 inch) onto the wall or slightly short of it, because the joint between wall and baseboard (or wall and ceiling, for that matter, is never as straight as a good painter can cut a line. With a textured wall it is difficult. In that case, you generally would choose to cut your line on the smoother surface (baseboard), but at the same time, you have to cover the caulk line because it will yellow over time.
What we I do is dedicate a whole day to completely cover the flooring, windows, railing, and ceiling fans. Which with the right crew takes around 4 - 5 hours. Then just spray all baseboards, door trims, and doors. All in one day. Second day everything is dry and you tape out the baseboard. Get the big roll of plastic and cut around an 8 inch piece and start covering all the rooms an hallways. It’s way easier. After you’re done painting the room, apply a small amount of caulking filling the corner of the wall and the baseboard right on top of the tape and with a brush go ahead and apply the wall paint all around the room. The caulking prevents the paint to slip inside into the baseboard. Once your remove the tape with the plastic. Everything looks good
I was always told when u cut u feather out of the fresh paint and not start ur brush into the fresh paint this dude should be going right to left the way he’s cutting
this is old school painting by experienced tradesmen who are seasoned. I'm old school and can apply a laser cut to any area but it takes a long time to master with the right brush. Practice makes perfect. Ceiling cuts were the priority of course..like a carpenters miter..the cut is the whole statement of the job. The rest of the cuts for the trim and base were always very decent bot if you lapped up on the wall an eighth in. it was acceptable. Today, the newbies only tape because for them to be productive taping is a faster alternative and now the cut lines are flawless because of the tape...so..you dont need to be much of a skilled cut man....... rather you are more a prep guy because of the taping..which is an art in itself.. It's just two schools of thought.. We dont tape anything unless im repaiinting only walls in a room i tape the base with my masker...the line is already straight and it keeps the base clean.. hoewver you do it...do it with pride...
I agree with this guy on doing the baseboards last. I'm not a pro, but have been painting old houses since I was a kid. Masking only works if you have near perfect walls and new baseboards and trim - ie a drywalled suburban house. On an old house the trim will never be perfect enough to make a good seal with tape. Paint will seep, and with varying condition of the trim the cut will look off. So for old trim there's no substitute for manually cutting your trim as this guy has done.
You are exactly right. I've been a professional painter for 25 years. When I lived on Long Island, most of the houses were older and taping would have been a waste of time and not looked good. Now that I live in Raleigh, most of the houses I paint are fairly new, so I usually tape off the trim.

I’m 77and just purchased my FIRST pair of knee pads ! Now that I really need them I wish I had got them when I was a lot younger, “too soon old too late smart”.
Years ago I worked Summer help painting classrooms at the Public School. My 1st day, got handed a 3 inch straight Purdy brush. Was informed this brush is supposed to last me the entire summer & there is no tape so I better learn how to cut in fast. (I got really good at it within a week also went through 8 brushes, they dont last long on concrete block 8 hrs a day 40 hrs a week for 3 months)
I would have masked the floor, sprayed the walls and back roll if needed,waited for the walls to dry, generally one day,proceeded to then mask the walls off where it meets the trim/door jams/baseboard w/ 12 inch masking paper, then spray the trim.I have been a pro painter for almost 20 years now and have seen every technique possible and have found this to be the most efficient and cleanest way.
OKAY SO SAY THAT WORKS IN UR 20 YEARS ,,,NOW WHAT ABOUT THE MIST OF OVER SPRAY SIR,,MIND U IVE BEEN PAINTING FOR A WHILE ALSO AND I TO HAVE TRIED THE WAY U HAVE SAID EITHER WAY WIN OR LOSE UR JOB WILL END UP BEAUTIFUL IF U KNOW UR TRADE,,
I think you'd waste too much time masking everything. 1) drop sheets for floor 2) tap baseboards 3) cut walls 4) rolls walls 5) paint baseboards 6) remove tap and drop sheets 7) have it all finished in one day.

Every situation is different but one thing I always like to do is caulk prior to any painting where ever any two colors meet (ceiling to wall, door jam to wall, base board to wall, regardless if there is a visible crack or not and especially where ceiling meets the wall in a textured room. (assuming a color is going on the wall) In fact, I wont cut in a room until this step is performed. You don't need much caulking ("16th of an inch), just enough to fill in the irregular dips and valleys in the texture, this will give you just enough of a smooth surface that your cut in will always come out looking sweet as cherry pie! And I like to paint the base last because tape doesn't stick well to freshly painted surfaces but I paint the door jam to wall edge first because it's easier to cut in the wall to door jam than the other way around.
yes we always caulk the corners thats if we paint the ceiling also tho

Nice to see old-school artistry. This is how paint was done for CENTURIES, i.e., by people with skills. Anyone can tape and slop it on, but it takes a real craftsman with a cultured hand to paint straight and clean. Three cheers!

You also need knowledge which if often the missing ingredient seeing how you don't require any certification to be considered a "professional". I'll be doing lots more videos soon where I'll be talking more about colors and things painters need to know about paint in order to solve and prevent paint problems.

I'm not a painter but have been doing up a house. One of the things that I think is good advice is use a good quality 12'' double arm roller and good quality brushes. This was advice I was given and the difference in ease of use is amazing.
Another way would be to paint the baseboards first then mask up the top edge to prevent any drops from landing on them, then when you want to paint walls you can cut the walls into the baseboards which for me is much easier then cutting the baseboards into the walls but like you said in your video "this is just one way" good tutorial :) greetings from a fellow painter in australia!

At my company our painters don’t use tape for anything painting related unless they’re spraying. One day I masked off the floor to paint base boards and received a lot of crap from the painters 😂 they don’t believe any pro painters should use masking tape because it looks unprofessional and wastes time that could be used to paint over time taping off.

Interesting... While I agree that Wooster and Purdy manufacture excellent brushes, they are not the only "good" brushes on the market. The brush I use is a Nour Nature's Palette 2.5 inch sash which is worth aprox $15 depending on where you purchase it. (But not at a Dollar Store)
But I especially find it interesting that you somehow felt the need to comment on my speed. I'm not saying I would win a speed contest... but is this really what separates the great painters from the not so great?

For those without these steady handed skills, the secret is using tape and PAINTABLE CLEAR CAULK. The real secret is the PAINTABLE CLEAR CAULK. What you do is use inexpensive Scotch brand 2020 masking tape (this is the cheaper yellow tape, but you'll not be letting it stick on long enough to be a problem and Scotch's brand is what the Pros use.
What you do is mask off a perfect straight line at the bottom edge of the wall where the baseboard begins. Make sure to smooth it down along the edge near the baseboard. Now here's the trick: using a caulk gun, squeeze out a VERY THIN line of caulk right on that line where the tape meets the baseboard. Now take your finger and smooth the caulk down to be as thin as a coat of paint and spread so that it gets up OVER the edge of the tape ONTO the tape, and of course onto the baseboard side also.
What you're doing is creating a PERFECT SEAL where it will be IMPOSSIBLE FOR PAINT TO SEEP UNDER THE TAPE and create a jagged edge of contrasting paint color (e.g. white trim on a blue wall). This is essentially a FOOL PROOF alternative to the more expensive tapes like FROG TAPE (the green tape)...
Now, immediately paint your baseboard BEFORE THE CAULK DRIES, and IMMEDIATELY pull the tape to reveal your perfect line.
Because the caulk is thicker in consistency than the paint (remember to keep your brush wet, we're not trying to drag a single brush load of paint stretched out overly far down the trim -- watch how he did it, note that he kept his brush pretty wet, just below the point of putting on so much that the paint would run - but because the caulk is thicker than the paint, you'll smoothly paint right over the wet caulk and when you pull your tape you will have a perfect line no freehand painter could ever match.
And because the caulk is CLEAR, any miniscule amount that would seep under the tape will show through to the wall color and not be detectable.
Remember:
It MUST be paintable clear caulk.
You MUST work quickly in a small area and squeeze out the caulk, wipe it down and paint fast enough to pull the tape before anything dries. In a typical bedroom that would likely mean doing all the baseboard in one pass, then the door trim in a second pass and then the closet trim in a third pass.
Use this technique anywhere you want an absolutely foolproof perfectly straight line such as at countertop backsplashes meeting the wall, kitchen cabinets meeting the wall, door trim, vinyl windows meeting the wall, etc. etc.
Also, if you're covering some sloppy prior overpainting where they used tape and it periodically bled through to make that dreaded jagged edge, you can often just set your new tape back enough to get a new clean line using this method which will let you completely cover that jagged edge, even if that means going 1/8" out onto the vinyl window (for example). People will notice a jagged line, WAY before they'll notice a perfectly straight line that's not exactly at the transition of say, window to wall...

so unnecessary. frog tape is ok but not worth the money. i use blue tape when i need it. i just paint all trim with no tape. this guy is an ok get by painter. been painting for 18 years. he's little sloppy in my opinion. got paint on the floor bout foot down on quarter rail where he started. top edge was a little wavy. sorry I'm just picky like that. my shit is straight. yes some basboards isn't that great of shape but this base I've seen here looks not bad.
no, the real secret is using the right brush. that said, I like to dip my cat in paint and use him as a brush. it doesn't work very well as far as painting goes, but it sure is fun, even if the cat doesn't think so.

I always hit all the trim before the walls, you can go faster, let the trim paint make it onto the wall so it fills the corner formed where they meet, then just cut the lines in with the wall color, i find it about a million times easier, the small little droplets are usually easily went over, or after cutting in the wall color, I might let it dry completely and then butt the drop up against the wall so its cover ing the trim for the most part, and roll it out
I was taught this way and still do all trim first when possible.. Well, ceiling first of course. ... Always keep a wet rag too and anticipate a once through at the end for touch ups 🙏
The idea of “cutting” is to make a perfect line so it don’t matter if u go up a little bit as long as it’s a straight line it’s professional
The best brush that I've found for doing this is the 3" straight Purdy Nylox 100% dyed nylon with the small round handle. You may have to ask at your Sherrwin Williams store. The ones around me you have to ask for them cause they keep them in the back. Anyways, They may not last over the years, but they are great for cutting in base and painting trim and casings, windows, etc.

Most of the jobs I do end up having the trims & ceilings stay the same color which means 1 coat is usually what's required. I simply showed my approach here to help people who might be doing the same type of job as me. But there are many "right" ways of doing things :)

Regarding painting the baseboards first... I personally find it much more difficult to do the cutting in from the wall near the baseboards especially on older baseboards where the corner might not be as square because of all the paint layers. This makes it harder for the bristles to nestle into the corner and stay there. By painting the baseboards last, you end up painting to top of the rounded corner creating the illusion of a straight line. Email me if you want to know more :)

I only do this sometimes. The other alternative is to paint trim first two coats. Then let dry. Use frog tape and run the whole top of the baseboard. Cut twice with wall paint. Roll out your walls. Then peel. You’ll have an amazing wall cut and the trim will look mint.

Just started working for my dad and he has over 35 years of commercial and residential painting and for my 3rd week of painting ever he put me on base this exact method on a multimillion dollar house and I fucking hate it haha. I had to do the caulking, cut in the wall then the trim and I just pray it's good enough. Don't have enough experience to know what will suffice as an end product.

It's more practice than anything. Your skills will be 80% of the way there after you paint one room. I'm speaking from experience
clean ur trim get a good brush and good paint. slow and steady pressure are the keys. I highly prefer an angled brush but that is just me. I like the wooster brushes at home depot and prefer them over purdys. 15 dollar brushes are worth it. learn to clean them.

I could get a thousand dollar self priming brush made with bristles of davinci’s beard hairs crafted by monks from the secret village of sherwood williams forrest and blessed by jesus himself and practice for a solid year and id still suddenly fart, twitch and put a big ole schplaow on the floor or wall... then like every time i do, try to wipe it off and make it 5 times bigger andin doing so somehow wipe off some fresh paint from the trim then track it through the entire house, carpets and all... simple three stooges or mr bean sequence.

exactly Carlos Joel Garcia,.. Totally agree with you.. I am trying to paint my kitchen now. I have NINE huge windows (floor to ceiling) and lots of trim. I am 60 with bad eyes. I wish I could do his technique. What I am having to do is lay on the floor on my side with my eyes 3-4" from the baseboard and use a 1/4" brush to get my line straight. All those complainers need to quit complaining. This is a great video.. He is able to paint with his face several feet away. ah, the days of good eyes!! I've been painting for over 20yrs. Never really cared less about angled brushes. But your videos convinced me to try. I only use angle brushes now. I also paint frames before walls now . Because of trim paint being water-based now,most of the time. You don't get the flashing caused by oil based . Great vids and great pro 👍🏻
angled brushes are designed for sash windows. straight edge brushes are for walls.
First thing I do is ask customers to clear the room of everything. I can do it but I charge a fee for that. Once room is clear I spackle all holes, fix cracks with tape and quick 20 minute mud ect. I then lightly sand all walls to get rid of buggers ect with a 180 grit sanding screen and pole. I then wash walls and trim with TSP no rinse formula. I then caulk all trim and tape off carpet under baseboards. Let dry with fan for a few hours as I continue to add spackle to nail holes and lightly sand spackle and mud over cracks and tape until wall is smooth. I

I'm also a pro painter, and I do baseboards the same way. It looks cleaner this way, as opposed to pre-painting, then taping off the base.

How do you not get any paint dropping on the hardwood. That's some serious skill technique.
If you have a good brush, you can be very accurate. I dont tape off floors. It takes more time and it's not necessary, and tape may prevent you from getting to the bottom edge. Even if you get a small bit of paint on the floor, just wipe it with wet rag. The only time i would use tape on the floor is if there is a wall-to-wall carpet.

My name is David from Topeka Kansas. I own a small painting company and I have a few tips for painting trim and walls on repaints. As we all know new construction painting is a lot easier than repaints of existing homes both interior and exterior. Fact is new construction saves 80% of their time by not having to mask anything off and therefore they can get by with using paint sprayers. This is not possible in existing homes whether people live in them or not. So lets to get to the tip I have for painting a room with walls and white baseboards. These are my tips in how I make a wall look flat, smooth and perfect crisp lines between wall and baseboards.
Those droplets are actually drywall compound from when the repairs were done (which were cleaned at the end)... regardless, I'm sorry to disappoint you :)

But if you look at this video again, you'll notice that I actually do a quick 2 strokes right at the beginning to empty the top of my bristles. Having said this, there are a few instances where I use other techniques depending on the condition of the trims. This was an older house and I do have other tricks to create the illusion of a straight line when the joint of the baseboard/wall might not be straight with dents or heavy caulking :)
Thanks for the video! I found it because I needed to touch up some door trim yesterday. On the first one I used masking tape, but after that I used your technique. I'll never go back to the masking tape! I haven't mastered your brush slapping technique yet, but I'll keep practicing!

I like to do the base boards first so I can cut once on the wall leaving it a nice smooth finish. I dont come across drips on baseboards at all.

This is actually a video series and so the walls had just recently been painted with the knowledge that the baseboards would be painted last. So yes, the top of the baseboards needed to be painted in this case because there was a bit of paint touching it from when I painted the walls. And regarding me being a pro or not... I'm actually a Licensed Painter & Decorator (Red Seal Certificate). Very few painters get this certification because it is unfortunately not required... at least not here.

In the uk 🇬🇧 we do ceilings walls then woodwork last. You save time and money on masking the skirting boards up that way. Just saying! Been a decorator 30 years in the uk 👍

I agree, but limited taping for me, I only tape off the horizontals that may get paint on them from rolling spatter or drips, seems before I was taping forever and even then sometimes the areas I taped vertically did not work out as well as I hoped. cheers

@@stringsgb8833 No, this is the most commonly accepted method for order of operations: (1) paint all trim first, then (2) ceiling, then (3) walls. It's easier to tape off smooth trim than rough walls. Without taping off, you're not going to get super sharp lines, but it's more costly to spend money on expensive tape like Frog tape, so some painters prefer to freehand it at the end so they don't have to mask things off.

Hey.. K for one base board are ment to be cut in last.. Painting is an illusion no ones line are perfect.. Cause no walls are perfect.. U make the illusion that its straight.. That another reason to why u paint base board last because u look at a down ward view of the base board.. Same with butt joint people will stay down with their cut.. But when u look in a Three-dimensional view around the room u can see their lines going up and down.. You ride the cove up.. the cove that the flusher makes from the drywall to give the illusion your lines are perfect from all angles.. Aswell these people that say the top of base board shouldn't be painted are on crack.. For one caulking HAS TO BE PAINTED OR IT TURNS YELLOW.. So yes it does have to be painted.. U did a decent job.. U forgot ur quarter round 45 but hey every true painter makes a mistake some times.. Aswell love that u said RED SEAL TICKET.. No one know about that.. Cause like u said it is not made to have to be a painter.. 6000 hours etc.. And ur exam I'm a red seal ticket painter aswell.. One thing may I add alot of people I see don't even know about this.. When rolling.. People use their cages WRONG.. The open end of ur cage should always be facing away from the direction ur painting.. If u look when a roller is put on a wall more Pressure is put to the one side and the open side actually Feathers out ur lines.. Aswell as light, flashing etc.. People think its so easy to roll their more to it then people think.. This is my 2 cents.. With 11 years painting experience..

In the states, we caulk and spray our trim first, then mask it off to paint the ceiling and walls
thats the way we do it in the good ole U.S.of A. finish the trim, then cover it up.
But Mexicans do that kind of work in the states.
I paint the return on jambs, windows and the top of baseboards first, (when I do accent walls) mask the top of baseboard with blue painters tape, it gives you a super straight line. 👍
After a couple of days I return and tape off the tops of my baseboards, door trim and window trim with yellow frog tape. 3 inch size to keep splatters away from trim ect. I cutin my ceiling and wall lines. I cutin my corners. I THEN TAKE MY WHITE TRIM PAINT AND USE A DRY BRUSH WITH SLIGHT AMOUNT OF WHITE TRIM PAINT AND GO OVER MY FROG TAPE ALONG THE EDGES OF MY TRIM. THIS WILL SEAL THE TAPE WITH THE WHITE TRIM PAINT SO WHEN YOU CUTIN LATER WITH THE WALL PAINT YOU WILL HAVE NO BLEED THRU AND YOUR WHITE TRIM LINE WILL BE AS CRISP AS A RAZOR. As soon as I apply the white paint over top of tape in a thin coat I let it dry for about 15 minutes and then apply a coat of paint over the top of the tape on the baseboard. I then roll out the walls. As soon as I am done I remove the tape and wallah!!...the perrfect razor sharp lines you will ever see..... give it a try....

There is a much simpler way of painting your baseboards with a great effect. If you don't want to mess up the floor, just use the wide patching knife and set it against, or under the shoe molding. You will have to sometimes use the force to push it underneath, and clean the knife from the paint but the result is great. As for the part between the wall and baseboard - I use a good quality brush (Purdy ClearCut 3") and my own "surgeon" hand, but you can always use masking tape.
I was taught to do the baseboard before the walls because it was easier to cut-in the top of the trim when doing the cut-in on the wall for me . I usually did the ceiling lines because I was tall and the guy I worked for was short so he did the baseboards. One day he made fun of tall people and I told him at least when I painted baseboards I didn't need a step ladder! I like your attitude towards people's remarks. To those who think painting walls doesn't have to be perfect and that straight lines are just an illusion. The problem with thinking that nothing is perfect makes things look really bad at the end. The goal should be to make it the best it could be. Yes there's going to be some variability, but if frame is is 1/4 off and drywall is 1/4 off and baseboards are 1/4 off and paint lines are just an illusion then you end up with a very bad looking room. People don't look at baseboards from the top. They look at from different sides. Also painting over the floor is not acceptable. I'm currently battling badly painted baseboards, multiple layers of paint, some drips, and dust painted over. I don't even know how to clean it before painting. Apparently all the pros who were painting were thinking that it's okay if things aren't perfect. No it's not okay, anyone with good vision who values aesthetics would be horrified.
Too many decorators quote cheap then are forced to do the job quickly in order to make a profit - in which case they do not perform the job as well as it should be done if they can do it well at all. I think this man is a DIYer though so I can understand the mistakes, he doesn't look very comfortable with the brush.
Chemical stripping would be your best bet. If it's an older house it'll also reduce risk from any lead paint shavings/dust in the air.
Tip#1: First, be a professional painter with a super-steady hand, so you don't need any other special tips on how to cut in a straight line, how to keep paint off the walls and floors, how to fix it when your brush goes off course a little, how to get the paint right down next to the floor if you have to do a color change, etc., because THIS VIDEO DOESN'T HAVE ANY. But it is nice watching this guy paint - he's really good at it.
I personally like taking baseboards off then paint em this way I can spray them with primer then spray paint them therefore tbere is no sign of brush strokes.

Trim paint is an enamel fininsh moat of the time. So it is self leveling. As long as you know what you are doing you wont see brush strokes.
If you do this, then you need to fill the nail holes, prime and paint, then caulk them and seal the caulking. Defeats the purpose.

He did that on purpose. That's proper technique. You need to make a choice, either paint slightly (like, 1/16 inch) onto the wall or slightly short of it, because the joint between wall and baseboard (or wall and ceiling, for that matter, is never as straight as a good painter can cut a line.
With a textured wall it is difficult. In that case, you generally would choose to cut your line on the smoother surface (baseboard), but at the same time, you have to cover the caulk line because it will yellow over time.
I think what your noticing is him going over the paint that got on the baseboard, trying to create a nice new line.

What we I do is dedicate a whole day to completely cover the flooring, windows, railing, and ceiling fans. Which with the right crew takes around 4 - 5 hours. Then just spray all baseboards, door trims, and doors. All in one day. Second day everything is dry and you tape out the baseboard. Get the big roll of plastic and cut around an 8 inch piece and start covering all the rooms an hallways. It’s way easier. After you’re done painting the room, apply a small amount of caulking filling the corner of the wall and the baseboard right on top of the tape and with a brush go ahead and apply the wall paint all around the room. The caulking prevents the paint to slip inside into the baseboard. Once your remove the tape with the plastic. Everything looks good
I was always told when u cut u feather out of the fresh paint and not start ur brush into the fresh paint this dude should be going right to left the way he’s cutting
this is old school painting by experienced tradesmen who are seasoned. I'm old school and can apply a laser cut to any area but it takes a long time to master with the right brush. Practice makes perfect. Ceiling cuts were the priority of course..like a carpenters miter..the cut is the whole statement of the job. The rest of the cuts for the trim and base were always very decent bot if you lapped up on the wall an eighth in. it was acceptable. Today, the newbies only tape because for them to be productive taping is a faster alternative and now the cut lines are flawless because of the tape...so..you dont need to be much of a skilled cut man....... rather you are more a prep guy because of the taping..which is an art in itself.. It's just two schools of thought.. We dont tape anything unless im repaiinting only walls in a room i tape the base with my masker...the line is already straight and it keeps the base clean.. hoewver you do it...do it with pride...

I agree with this guy on doing the baseboards last. I'm not a pro, but have been painting old houses since I was a kid. Masking only works if you have near perfect walls and new baseboards and trim - ie a drywalled suburban house. On an old house the trim will never be perfect enough to make a good seal with tape. Paint will seep, and with varying condition of the trim the cut will look off. So for old trim there's no substitute for manually cutting your trim as this guy has done.
You are exactly right. I've been a professional painter for 25 years. When I lived on Long Island, most of the houses were older and taping would have been a waste of time and not looked good. Now that I live in Raleigh, most of the houses I paint are fairly new, so I usually tape off the trim.

I’m 77and just purchased my FIRST pair of knee pads ! Now that I really need them I wish I had got them when I was a lot younger, “too soon old too late smart”.
Years ago I worked Summer help painting classrooms at the Public School. My 1st day, got handed a 3 inch straight Purdy brush. Was informed this brush is supposed to last me the entire summer & there is no tape so I better learn how to cut in fast.
(I got really good at it within a week also went through 8 brushes, they dont last long on concrete block 8 hrs a day 40 hrs a week for 3 months)

I would have masked the floor, sprayed the walls and back roll if needed,waited for the walls to dry, generally one day,proceeded to then mask the walls off where it meets the trim/door jams/baseboard w/ 12 inch masking paper, then spray the trim.I have been a pro painter for almost 20 years now and have seen every technique possible and have found this to be the most efficient and cleanest way.
OKAY SO SAY THAT WORKS IN UR 20 YEARS ,,,NOW WHAT ABOUT THE MIST OF OVER SPRAY SIR,,MIND U IVE BEEN PAINTING FOR A WHILE ALSO AND I TO HAVE TRIED THE WAY U HAVE SAID EITHER WAY WIN OR LOSE UR JOB WILL END UP BEAUTIFUL IF U KNOW UR TRADE,,
I think you'd waste too much time masking everything. 1) drop sheets for floor 2) tap baseboards 3) cut walls 4) rolls walls 5) paint baseboards 6) remove tap and drop sheets 7) have it all finished in one day.
